About the little blue bird who didn’t like to fly

About the little blue bird who didn’t like to fly One day a little blue bird fell out of her nest. She hurt her wing and sat and cried. She waited for someone to come and pick her up and make it better. But nobody did. So she sat there a bit longer and cried a bit louder. And when still nothing happened, she decided to get up and going. With her hurt wing she could not fly, so she walked. She walked through plains and prairies and past dunes and hills. But she didn’t see any of it, because the pain in her wing made her a bit dizzy. One day however she ran into a tree and was puzzled: ‘This tree had not been there just a moment ago?’ She looked up and saw that it wasn’t a tree after all, but the most beautiful creature she had ever met: It was tall like a tree, its legs lanky like bamboo stalks. It had four of them and they were covered in colourful fur with yellow and brown markings. In her excitement the little blue bird began to chirp. All of a sudden a big friendly face appeared in front of her. The animal had craned its long neck down to see what funny blue fluff was tweeting at its feet. Big chocolate brown eyes with eye lashes as long as the little blue bird’s tail feathers looked at her curiously. The animal sniffed the little blue bird and her feathers got ruffled. She got a fright and jumped backwards. But the creature was gentle: “Who are you?” “I’m the little blue bird!” squeaked the little blue bird. “I’m the tall as a tree giraffe”, introduced the tall as a tree giraffe himself. “I lived once on a tree!” exclaimed the little blue bird. “Then what are you doing down on the ground?” asked the tall as a tree giraffe and nudged the little blue bird on his head. In one instant the little blue bird was high up in the sky. She wasn’t used to heights anymore so she clung to the tall as a tree giraffe’s horns with her dear life. But then, when she saw the tree tops and the far away horizon, she was overjoyed. She hopped happily on the top of the tall as a tree giraffe’s head. The tall as a tree giraffe laughed and giggled: “That’s ticklish!”

About the little blue bird who didn’t like to fly

But the little blue bird was so cheerful, she couldn’t keep still: “It is so wonderful up here! Please, tall as a tree giraffe, can I stay here forever?” And because the tall as a tree giraffe liked the little blue bird, he said: “Yes.”

Thus the little blue bird made herself a nest between the two horns of the tall as a tree giraffe. He looked like he was wearing a fancy hat with the little blue bird’s glittery cobalt feathers on top of his tawny head. The little blue bird had forgotten all about the pain in her wing, but still didn’t like to fly. She felt content going wherever the tall as a tree giraffe went. So they travelled together. They walked through savannas and prairies and this time the little blue bird saw it all. She was amazed by the everlasting sands and undulating hills. The land could be glaring and hot like a flat out gleaming mirror or soft and wavy like the gently swaying sea. And when the evening neared the red sunset made it look as if the steppe was on fire. The little blue bird felt very sprightly as those beautiful surroundings took their effect on her. She kept on tweeting and twittering like a radio that wouldn’t run out of battery. They had a good time together. The little blue bird was happy, because she could travel high up like on a tree top and the tall as a tree giraffe was happy, because he could listen to the little blue bird’s song.

After a while however the little blue bird grew bored of the never changing scenery. What she had been chirpy about seemed dull and desolate now. Even the tall as a tree giraffe seemed bland, with his sandy colours blending into the landscape. She started dreaming of far away places and exotic lands. So the little blue bird said one day: “Tall as a tree giraffe, I wonder what lies beyond the sea. Let’s go and explore!” The tall as a tree giraffe answered: “I’m sorry, little blue bird, I can’t swim through the sea. But if you like to explore, you can go yourself.” But the little blue bird said: “No, I can’t swim either.” Thus they travelled on, but the little blue bird grew more and more restless. On another day the little blue bird said: “Tall as a tree giraffe, I wonder what lies beyond the mountains. Let’s go and explore!” The tall as a tree giraffe answered: “I’m sorry, little blue bird, I can’t climb over the mountains. But if you like to explore, you can go yourself.” But the little blue bird said: “No, I can’t climb either.”

They continued their way, when one day a flock of other little blue birds dashed past them. That was when the little blue bird exclaimed: “Tall as a tree giraffe, look at those little blue birds! I wonder where they are heading. Let’s go and join them!” The tall as a tree giraffe answered: “I’m sorry, little blue bird, I can’t fly with the little blue birds. But if you like to join them, you can go ahead.” But the little blue bird said: “No, I can’t fly either.” At this the tall as a tree giraffe was startled, so he asked: “Why can’t you fly?” The little blue bird answered: “When I was a very little blue bird, I fell out of my nest and hurt my wing.” The tall as a tree giraffe disagreed: “So far I have seen every little blue bird fly. I’m sure you can fly too. Have you ever tried?” The little blue bird realised she had never actually tried to fly. After the fall out of her nest her wing had hurt too much and since she had met the tall as a tree giraffe there had never been the need to fly. But now so much time had passed, she couldn’t even imagine how to lift up in the air. The little blue bird felt embarrassed and didn’t want to talk about it. But the tall as a tree giraffe simply said: “Every little blue bird is destined to fly. So are you.”

One day the tall as a tree giraffe was feeding of a tree and the little blue bird sat on her usual spot between his horns. All of a sudden a big burly lion came rushing towards them. The little blue bird managed to hop onto the tree, but the tall as a tree giraffe was not quick enough to escape the grasp of the big burly lion. He chased the tall as a tree giraffe and got him at his leg. The little blue bird had to witness it all helplessly. ‘If just I could fly!’, thought the little blue bird when she cheeped in fear. Luckily the tall as a tree giraffe got the chance to kick the big strong lion with his hard hooves. He gave up and ran off. But the leg of the tall as a tree giraffe was badly injured. He limped towards the little blue bird. “Little blue bird”, he said. “I can’t walk on like this.” The little blue bird was in tears and asked: “How can I help, tall as a tree giraffe?” He answered: “Go and find a herd of tall as a tree giraffes. They will know what to do.”

About the little blue bird who didn’t like to fly

So it came that the little blue bird was walking on her own again. She walked through savannas and grasslands in search of a herd of tall as a tree giraffes. One day the little blue bird arrived at a lake. It was very big, too big for the little blue bird to walk around it. ‘If just I could fly’, wished the little blue bird. But then she hopped into the water and because she was light and the wind blew from the right direction, she floated towards the other shore. “I can swim after all!” exclaimed the little blue bird in surprise. On another day the little blue bird came to a hill. It was very big, too big for the little blue bird to walk around it. ‘If just I could fly’, dreamed the little blue bird. But then she hopped from one stone to another and because she was light and her legs were strong, she managed to get on top of the hill. “I can climb after all!” exclaimed the little blue bird in excitement. As the little blue bird was standing by the cliff, the view left her breathless: Below her unfolded the vast landscape of Africa. Sturdy grasses, thorny bushes and coarse trees abode like frozen in time over the sandy land that stretched infinitely towards the horizon. Waterholes were scattered sparsely and glistened in the sun like diamond splinters. Groups of animals slid like dark shadows across the scenery. Nevertheless, she couldn’t make out a herd of tall as a tree giraffes and felt despair: ‘How can I ever find help for the tall as a tree giraffe in these wide and endless lands?’ she thought. ‘If just I could fly’, hoped the little blue bird fervently. In that moment a wind gush took hold of her and pushed her over the edge of the cliff. The little blue bird got a huge fright, but instinctively spread her wings. And because she was light and the wind carried her, she started to fly. “I can fly, I can fly!” exclaimed the little blue bird in joy. Her happiness made her courageous and she started to flap her wings. The little blue bird chirped in excitement and rejoiced. For the first time in her life she flew!

She made such turmoil, her chirping got louder and caught the attention of a flock of other little blue birds. As they came closer, she was thrilled and flew up to them. “What is going on, little blue bird?” asked the flock of little blue birds. “I can fly, I can fly!” exclaimed the little blue bird. “Of course you can fly, every little blue bird is destined to fly.” Answered the flock of little blue birds. That was when the little blue bird thought of the tall as a tree giraffe and said: “I’m searching for a herd of tall as a tree giraffes! As much as I am looking, I can’t find any!” “That is because it is so hot, they are standing in the shade of trees. And with their tawny colour they are well disguised in these surroundings.” they explained. “Follow us, we’ll show you where we have seen a herd of tall as a tree giraffes!”

About the little blue bird who didn’t like to fly

So the little blue bird flew with them and became part of the flock of little blue birds. The rush of flying in a swarm of birds exalted her. She learned quickly how to turn sharp corners and do a nosedive. Only when they landed did she tumble and fell hard on her bum. She rolled right in front of a tall as a tree giraffe. She blinked and when she looked up, big chocolate brown eyes greeted her. Frantically she told the herd of tall as a tree giraffes about her tall as a tree giraffe and that he needed help. Straight away they got on their way to find him. The flock of little blue birds also got up to look out for him from the air.

Thus it happened that soon after the tall as a tree giraffe was surrounded by a herd of tall as a tree giraffes and a flock of little blue birds. He could hear the excited twitter of the little blue bird, but as he scanned the heads of all the tall as a tree giraffes, she was nowhere to be seen. That was when he realised that she was part of the flock of little blue birds. Just in that moment, she shot out towards him and came to a halt with an unintended somersault at her second attempt to land. The tall as tree giraffe had to laugh. “You can fly!” he cheered. “Yes, I can fly” beamed the little blue bird. And both were happy. Thus the tall as a tree giraffe felt already much better. The herd of tall as a tree giraffes helped him to mend his leg and soon he was walking like before, as if nothing had happened to him. That was when the little blue bird flew up to his head and landed on her usual spot between his two horns. The other little blue birds were surprised to see her so amiable with a tall as a tree giraffe. But they liked the idea of travelling high up like on a tree top and each one of them also landed on a tall as a tree giraffe. This surprised the tall as a tree giraffes, but soon they liked the idea, as they enjoyed listening to the song of the little blue birds.

And since then the little blue birds often came to visit the tall as a tree giraffes and sit on their heads twittering and tweeting chirpily. So when you see a tall as a tree giraffe with a little blue bird on his head, then you know now how they became such good friends.
