ATL AS G A LLE RY & S T U DI OS F OR E DM U N D D E W AAL & T H E LI T T LE S T E E L M E S T E R Located in Atlas, Sheffield, amidst the industrial remains of Sheffield’s famous steel-making history in Lower Don Valley - this project provides studio spaces and a gallery for contemporary ceramics artist Edmund de Waal, as well as for local blacksmith artists. The design focuses around the idea of celebrating the contrasts between delicacy/ purity and griminess/roughness, while aiming to bridge the adjacent Pitsmoor community with the forgotten industry through an interplay between art and social opportunities. The Corner Pin, an old retired steelmaker’s pub on the site, is revived and complimented with an outdoor beer garden to create a new social hub in Atlas.

Characterized by its purity, lightness, and open plan. High windows mimic industrial warehouses in scale, and are frosted to diffuse light and overall brighten the space.
Characterized by its textured, dim, mysterious qualities directly contrasting with EDW’s studios. Forge area connects with Edmund’s firing space.

E D INB URG H C H I LDRE N ’ S M U S I C C E N T RE Located adjacent to Edinburgh Castle & along the Grassmarket Square in the Old Town of Edinburgh, this project provides practice spaces and a performance theatre for local children interested in playing instrumental music. The design of the project revolved around two kinds of spaces: 1. ‘focus’ - spaces that heighten the focus and individual growth of each students (practice rooms and performance space); 2. ‘activity’ - in-between spaces that enable social interactions and collaborative practice (central circulation and practice rooms’ hallways). Meticulous attention was given towards developing these two distinct spaces to meet the social and independent needs of young children, while further cultivating their love for music.

The site is a threshold between the vibrant Grassmarket Square and the dynamic castle. By stepping back from the market and taking yourself towards the other end of the site, you can surround yourself in serenity while having a beautiful view across the city. The design of my building fully utilizes this poetic nature of the site to create a place where children can find joy in playing music to the city.

P AR T I EX P E RI E N C E : HTA D E S I G N LLP Currently, I am working as a Part I Architectural Assistant at HTA Design. This opportunity has allowed me to take my interests in community design a step further and learn about the real-life processes of housing projects, estate regeneration, and placemaking. I have been involved with various projects ranging in different scales from individual houses to larger, phased masterplans.

ANTELOPE ROAD G R EE N W I C H , UK Client: Royal Borough of Greenwich
Currently in planning stage, this project sits within the area of the former Woolwich Dockyard & is adjacent to Grade-II listed clockhouse & Thames river. It aims to rehome the existing YMCA & nursery facilities as well as provide approx. 180 homes across 4 blocks majority of which will be affordable. The site’s location provides a unique opportunity to enhance the river edge, improve the promenade for pedestrians & cyclists, & add to the historical character of the site. At concept stage, I worked a lot with the design of block D - a potential tower block adjacent to the Thames path - in testing different height and footprint options, as well as developing its placemaking concept at ground level.

This project is an urban mixed masterplan consisting of 500 private and affordable new homes as well as 4,500sqm of rich mix commercial space at ground level. The ground floor environment, with a large central route and a series of ‘yards’ behind the new buildings will create a vibrant and thriving new creative hub for Camberwell. For this project, I have been involved with preparing for the planning application resubmission.

I NTE R NSH I P E X P E RI E N C E : AS AI K E N A RC H I T E C T U RA L RE S E A RC H I N C . For most of the time during my two-month internship at AAR+, I was actively involved with the interior design team. This included contributing ideas for the interior layout and design of several hotel lobbies and communal areas of residential complexes. Some of my work revolved around sketching spaces to communicate my own ideas of interior finishes, working with AutoCAD and furniture catalogs to come up with my own full interior design proposal for communal areas of a hotel currently under construction, drawing special furniture for custom orders, and so on.

Other than looking at flooring and wall finishes, I worked a lot with producing illustrations of special furniture for custom orders.

Type: Hotel (Commercial) For this project, I was given the task of coming up with a proposal for the interior design of the lobby, lounge, cafe, and bar of the hotel at an early stage. To meet the client’s demands for a tech-centered design catered for young women, I picked an art-deco approach with contemporary and industrial twists to create spaces that are social-media friendly in aesthetic and enjoyable for groups of women. I used catalogs and online sources to collect references for the chosen concept of the design and produced various mood boards as well as layout and artificial lighting plans.

This dissertation critically explores the interconnected relationship between architectural and urban reality, film, and representation through the lens of an acclaimed Japanese animated filmmaker, Hayao Miyazaki. By framing Miyazaki’s works Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) and Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986) within a larger and longer contextualization of Japan’s urban realities and collective utopian representations, I delineate the key ideologies that are implicit in the filmmaker’s response to post-war Japan’s rapid modernization. Through this, we can observe the impressions his unique visions have left on the collective Japanese perspective towards images of utopia, and the possible impacts his ideas have had on the development of contemporary Japanese architectural ideologies.

Part I - Establishing Japan’s historical, cultural, and theoretical framework in relation to architecture and film
2
Part II - Analysis of two of Miyazaki’s films

Part III - Establishing connections with the filmmaker and contemporary Japanese architectural ideologies
