THE URBAN SLAUGHTERHOUSE Place Program Period

Urban Anderlecht slaughterhouses, still functioning, do not comply with sanitary and labor standards. From a master plan designed by the ORG agency, which provides densification of the 13ha site with the addition of new features, a new slaughterhouse was designed. 9

THE URBAN SLAUGHTERHOUSE
My first intention was to create a physical continuity between the metro and the market hall through a public course. The compact and closed volume of the slaughterhouse is pierced by the public portion expands and creates an inner space. Thus the volume finds itself divided in two parts: one proper part for slaughtering and the other for social and administrative functions. The activities positioned inner plot are those most open to the public such as the meat market and the meat point (kitchens activities, discoveries, visits, etc.). All functions of the slaughterhouse are thoughts for receiving the beasts, stabling, slaughtering, cutting channels, fridges, until the release of the meat in street dedicated to dispatch the meat. While remaining closed and not showing the slaughter and cutting operations, the construction provides with different external light inputs for each function, and views for the workers working comfort. The interior space of the building is made of mineral materials and can welcome markets and other events animating the way of the metro to the hall. To give importance to the building, it is covered with stones gathered in the area, in an ecological concern.

The Puig monastery square is used today as a parking. The master plan includes the reorganization with the creation of housing, fair pavilions, and one parking. The project intends to make the monastery environment more human and completely pedestrian. The floor material is unified with a stone pavement and the course has many atmospheres arranged in different ways. 19

The housing volume is compact to mark his presence in the environment. The volume is pierced by a central patio which brings light and air into the construction. The building mass is ponctually pierced to open the housings, but they always stay out of the sun. The building includes 24 units with different sizes and optimisations. They can host students, young couples, families, or pensioners. Each flat has a private terrace in addition with the communal patio and the corridor. The materiality is in line with the environment of the construction (The clay brick walls of the monastery and the new mineral square) ; the walls are made of white concrete mixed with bricks and stones from the external environment. 21

AROUND THE MONASTERY : BOOKS KIOSK
The ephemeral and the simplicity of construction are central in the conception of the project. The 15m2 compact volume lands on the mineral floor frame and fit in its own environment. By multiplying itself, it allows pedestrian steams during event like the book fair. These urban furniture components, punctually and regularly positioned on the square, punctuate the course. The exterior volume is fully made of corten steel to keep this unity and compactness when the roof is closed. The interior is completely made of wood for a warm atmosphere. The wood and steel panels are simple modules in order to simplify the construction. 27

AROUND THE MONASTERY : PARKING
The parking is located under the South place, this let the pedestrians walk around the monument. The parking, two floors underground, has two entrances, the west one for cars and the east one for buses. The car area spreaded in two floors, while the buses has a double height ceiling. The pedestrian vertical way and palm trees are part of the parking lot’s frame and emerge on the square through vegetal areas. The holes’ palms allow to bring in natural light and regulate the parking ventilation.

The project is implemanted near Valencia’s dockside, in an abandoned industrial warehouse. It intends to reconvert the place for a 6 months temporary activity : a sound studio. 33

SOUNDS FACTORY The building is divided in two buildings. In the first one, are setted up workshops, the reception, and a storage part for the recovered materials. The workshop area is flexible and can be modified with movables walls which are pulled by a cables hanging system from pillars. The rest of the furniture is made with recycled materials such as pallets. The second building hosts the backstage for rehearsal and a concert stage with soundproofed boxes, which can be opened or closed. The two buildings communicate by the bar and a large entry which can be closed at night to leave only the building concert accessible. The facades sketch is made from existing windows and “rhythms�, by reajusting and filling out the cavities and voids to create large bright slits providing light at strategic locations. In the backyard, the garden is used for the continuity of the space.

BOZAR EXTENSION Place

The Bozar museum extension project, originally designed by the architect Victor Horta in 1922, is theoretical project. Thus as the manner of an aerial layer as thought by Yona Friedman in the 1960s, the Bozar building can extend through a new structure, which can receive new modules according to the museum needs. BOZAR EXTENSION
The extension takes the shape of a convertible complex based on desires and needs of users, such as the Cedric Price’s Fun Palace project in 1961 and its achievement through the Pompidou center by R.Piano R.Rogers in Paris in 1977. The spaces are flexbile for any events and settled in the aerial structure.

The project aims the brownfield site rehabilitation, with the establishment of a master plan including five housing buildings and a vegetal alley connecting the canal to the park behind the field. A building housing has been developed afterwards. 47

The 4 levels compact building aligns with the street building front, then turns towards the green alley entrance. Inside, the building is more intimate with its common area as it faces towards the backyard. The units touch both sides of the building in order to enjoy the northwest and southeast sight. On the ground floor, duplexes housing are hidden from the street with private entrance. The upper floors of the duplexes follow a similar pattern of the Le Corbusier’s housing unit. With this complex organization, duplexes are different in their sizes and shapes, each housing having a big breakthrough in the building terrace.

In the corner of the block, the lot opens directly on the urban side of the place and has a 580m2 surface.

The project includes two independent functions, one private the other public: a set of 3 homes and a library. 53

PLAYTIME
The architectural object, with a template of three floors, and a lower height on the residential street side, is centered around a courtyard which belongs to the library. An alley go through the building and leads to a public park behind the block. The library is spread over the first two floors of the building and has levels in between each floor. The duplex apartments on the second and third floors are served by outside corridor. The sleeping area is located on the second floor with the entries, and the living area is right off a large open terrace. The modularity is permitted by the structural frame, and the simplicity of the plan. The building, while being white in appearance, is covered with a stainless steel casing, creating a filter to the dynamics of the place.

This thesis work took place during the 2014-2015 year. It deals with the conversion of industrial heritage, particularly towards cultural use. The study was done in Lille Mテゥtropole, and more specifically about the European Capital of the Culture event in 2004. 61

With an interest for heritage, conservation and re-use, I first considered the conversion of industrial heritage. A whole series of questions resulted : their consideration as a heritage to preserve, heritage listing and protection. Then about their conversion : what type of buildings, to which they belong ? Who are the client? The town hall, the region, the state, associations, property developers ? How are they converted : homes, offices, public building ? For what purposes : Interest heritage, urban development, taking account of sustainable development ? And : why convert rather than destroy ? From there, some factories are converted punctually in the urban landscape, dependents on the building owner interest for the building and its goals. But conversions are not entered into an urban general plan, or master plan. With the European Capitals of the Culture program, cities benefit of title for their development and carry out projects. Indeed, with the evolution of the title and the Europe expansion, cities have gradually used the label as urban policy key driver to give a new image to cities. The development through culture is an urban projects catalyst. Cities seek to revitalize their heritage. When Lille was Capital of Culture in 2004, has converted places of heritage into cultural spaces and main elements for the event. Some of these buildings are industrial heritage.
The industrialization and de-industrialization had marked both within the population and within the urban forms. The needs of industrial development have shaped the structure of the city. The urban context is the result of available lands and transports for raw materials and energy. Number of urban wasteland and abandoned industrial buildings will be present and will shape the landscape after the 1960s. Then, I looked for a converted industrial heritage inventory in the region of Lille. After some discussions with the city and the land registry, it proved that there was not an inventory realized on industrial heritage. So I got a list drawn up by the Lille Development and Urban Planning Agency which contained some conversions of industrial heritage. I enlarged this list through research including Lille PLU sites, historical monuments of France, and other sites listing the interesting informations to my work. Thereafter I established distribution maps of converted factories with their original uses and current uses. Finally, through these cards, I could see the part of the event European Capital of Culture in 2004, Lille Metropole had benefited to accelerate the restructuring process of some industrial sites in famous places for the event. The twelve Maisons Folie and the Tri Postal are located in cities across the territory, three are in Belgium and located in working-class neighborhoods.
Thus, through the creation of Maisons Folie and the Tri Postal in the center of neighborhoods, the population has participated in the program. These cultural sites are designed in a longer time and permanent, especially in the Lille following cultural program Lille 3000. They are also strategically located in disadvantaged neighborhoods and aim at socially and economically revitalize those areas, and on a larger scale, participate in the development of cities. In studying Lille 2004, I found that North city suffered a serious economic and social crisis with deindustrialization.

ITHAQUES ARCHITECTS INTERNSHIP
I did this internship in Paris in July 2014.
Competition for the construction of 10 units in Clamart, near Paris. The work was to establish a project with technical plans, all accessibles for desiabled persons and work on the façade achieved with RhynocÊros and Artlantis software. Axonometric projections
In addition to the simple and functional architectural style, a solid detail work in construction, an ecology concern, working in a small team and with another intern was a good learning. I participated in various works : sketch, building permit application to rehabilitate a group of housing, design of a public park, updating the company book). 67

This work was about the realisation of a building permit for the extension of a house near Paris. The intervention foresees the reorganisation of rooms in the house whose structure is made of wooden beams, and the addition of two parts, the structure is lightweight and made of wood.

ATELIER DE RICOU INTERNSHIP
This internship was held in July 2013 in Paris.
After identication, photographies, drawings and mesures, we had to reassemble the the room decor with present pieces. Then the decor will be paint by trainet painters.

The De Ricou studio is an artwork restoration company and historic interior decoration. They often work with architect executive of historic monuments on architectural heritage. I worked and saw many different projets : sketches for a recent house, the meticulous cleaning for walls with paintings, woodworks, and marbles dating from 17th century, the murals recreation in a town house dating from the 16th century, and the decoration of a mansion with paintings and historic furnitures (including renaissance). 71

The company Vive le bois is located in the south of France and produces windows frames, doors and wood furniture for homes, or new public projects such as school. This training taught me to approach closer the construction part as an architect with several projects: the furniture and frames of a school under construction, the chassis for the extension of a wooden house and the rehabilitation of an old farm. 73
