SELECTED PROJECTS
APPROACH
My core architectural research interests have evolved around the premise of duality. A fascination with the role of symmetry, asymmetry, balance and tension has given rise to the testing of the inherent frictions, sometimes obvious but sometimes latent, in a given physical, theoretical and programmatic contexts. These investigations have generated design opportunities to engage in and test the boundary conditions between entities. The following is a small sampling of the process and the results of this work.
01 CHART Art Fair Invited Architecture Competition August 2014 Pop Up Restaurant for Atelier September Designed and built in collaboration with Benjamin Lucraft Site: Charlottenborg Courtyard Copenhagen, Denmark
This temporary restaurant pavilion, designed and built for the duration of CHART Art Fair in Copenhagen, was divided in two distinctive parts, each with their own pace, type of interaction, and spatial qualities.
Behind, a shrouded sake bar accommodated seven seated guests who could unwind over a sake or a cup of tea, the seating raised up to be at the eye level of the bar staff serving them.
In the front, an elevated service bar acted as the accelerated space, where the staff served freshly grilled corn and local cider. Above which, the storage loft’s contents could be seen slowly depleting over the weekend of the fair.
We re-assembled and refinished the old school wooden scaffolding planks to create the floors, bar tops and ceilings which rested atop the timber frame construction.

02 Masters Thesis Project / Afgangsprojekt 2014 Drawing the Veil EK2 - Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Department 2 Tutor: Niels Grønbæk Site: Zürafa Sokaki, Istanbul, Turkey This project deals with the notion of gendered space and aimed at addressing the dialectics between body, building and city, in the context of a government regulated brothel district in Istanbul, Turkey. The dialogue between the existing program on the site and an introduced program of ‘fashion district’ (including atelier, textile manufacture and retail spaces) was articulated through a process of speculative transformation, a continual negotiation and inhabitation of the temporal boundary between the existing and proposed. The project revolves around the process of delineating a new veil of perception within the constraints of the contextual framework. This veil not only acts to conceal and reveal the body, but also controls vision and thus the modes and techniques of representation. The project aims to destabilize the notion of ‘privileged gaze’ by questioning the roles of the viewer, the viewed and the boundary between the outside and the inside. It challenges the 2 dimensional image by revealing and concealing in an extruded depth of the 3 and 4 dimensional model as testing device.
ABOVE: The site/sight plan - the abstract site through a speculative pseudoscopic device - revealing a modulation in the depth perception due to the nature of stereo vision BELOW: The site model highlighting the implicated brothel buildings implicated in the transformation. The model divides in two reveals the two elevations - and locates the viewers privlidged viewpoint OPPOSITE: Stills from film capturing the shadowed drawn by the 1:20 model
ABOVE: A drawing which unfolds the site plan into two sections looking opposite directions revealing the interior catwalk spaces. LEFT: Three axonometric drawings showing sections through the interior brothel/atelier spaces from the optimized exterior viewpoints. The location of the private spaces above relates to the level of visual privacy created by the way the light is modulated by the depth and relation to the moving facade veils.
03 Masters Year One Project 2013 Partitioning an Animate Whole EK1 - Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Department 2 Tutor: Niels Grønbæk Site: Berlin, Germany
To keep the future parade route in the planned world capital ‘Germania’ clear of all the future automobile traffic, a series of massive underground tunnels running beneath Berlin were designed by Albert Speer, architect of the third reich in 1937. Less than ten percent of the car tunnel system was actually completed, yet there are massive tunnel fragments partially completed that still remain today, closed up and slowly filling with water, several meters below the surface of Tiergarten. The entrances are locked, hidden from view and largely forgotten. This project suggests to re purpose and inhabit these immense watery spaces as a anti-memorial to contrast the grandiose unrealized plans for Germania by using this project as a device to question the
notions of idealized beauty, (a)symmetry, and abstraction. The two tunnels are each bisected and the two programs are inserted: a car wash and a bath house run the length of both. The bisection line down the middle of the two programs becomes the datum creating the dissonance between the two programs and thus between the car and body. The car wash is connected to the Tiergarten car tunnel which runs just parallel to the site. In placing the two processes of washing (car body, human body) next to each other, the wall condition begins to ask questions of occupancy, of perception of public/private space, of transparency/ opacity, and of the elemental qualities of the intersection of these bodies at different tempos.
ABOVE: Plan drawing showing the two intersecting tunnels, bisected with the two programs occupying either side of a varied boundary condition. BELOW L: Conceptual drawing intersecting the car and body, BELOW R: A render of the tunnels and additions OPPOSITE: Rendering of intersection of bathhouse and car wash
04 Bachelor Year 3 Final Project 2010 Odeon Drive-In Cinema Motel ED3 - University of Manitoba, Department of Architecture Tutors: Karen Shanski and Ronnie Araya Site: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
In the city of Winnipeg’s case, there is a physical line drawn in an attempt to create a liminal boundary condition, a continuous road that encompasses and defines the limit of the city. It could be suggested that this perimeter highway attempts to mediate the rural and the urban as a single line drawn; the edge of both the ‘City’ and the ‘Not City’. This project inhabits the drawn boundary and manifests itself on the surface of the drive-in movie screen which is found just off the highway. The projected cinema screen of the abandoned site is re-purposed, and through a process of projection and extrusion, is inhabited as a motel for travelers coming to and leaving the city by road.
TOP: Section through the motel inhabiting the screen MIDDLE: Conceptual models, at 1:100, 1:50 BELOW: Trace drawing of the horizons as seen and drawn on the windscreen of a moving car on the perimeter highway OPPOSITE: Conceptual model at 1:500, BELOW: Drawing showing the perimeter highway which surrounds Winnipeg
05 Bachelor Year 2 Final Project 2009 Dual Programmatic Clinic ED2 - University of Manitoba, Department of Architecture Tutor: Eduardo Aquino Site: Winnipeg, Manitoba This project is a discussion of a possible architecture of choice. It ventures into a realm of grey moral, ethical, and aesthetic decisions that are part of human existence. It presents an architecture that could become a catalytic moral environment for life choices with its dual program: an abortion clinic and a fertility clinic that coexist within the same outer skin, and within which organs with opposing functions and outcomes cohabit. It references the
metaphor of a human heart – functionally and physically discreet chambers hung together from the structural skeleton, the interstitial spaces between them divided by the septum which mediates and negotiates the interaction between the two opposing sides. Testing the role of metaphor as a formal generator, this project aimed at questioning the role of the partition in relation to two discreet programs, and how they intersect.
