Do You Look Like Your Online Dating Photos? Posted on October 2014 by Julie Ferman Share
The biggest complaint I get from today’s online dating users is that the people they’re meeting in person aren’t showing up “as advertised” – Are you guilty of false advertising?
Are the photos you’re using on your online dating profile (or your matchmaker’s profile) helping or hurting you? Follow these guidelines to be sure you’re not misleading anyone, intentionally or otherwise. If your photos don’t pass these tests, then you may get a first date with some interesting prospects, but you won’t likely see very many second dates.
1. Are you showing at least three photos? One photo isn’t enough to give the viewer confidence about what you really look like. If you look appealing in both or all three of your photos, you’ve got a much better chance of being contacted and being invited out on a date.
2. Are you showing too MANY photos? This matchmaker suggests revealing 3 – 5 photos. Posting 20 photos is too overwhelming and can make you look narcissistic. Better is to choose your most flattering current photos.
3. Are ANY of your photos more than a year or two old? If so…yank those older photos, even if they’re your favorites, especially if you’ve made changes to your hair/facial hair, or if you’ve changed your “look” in any significant way.
4. Are you posting only face shots? Men especially will hesitate to reach out to a woman who’s showing only a face shot, as he fears the worst. And what might be “the worst” for one person, for example, might very well be the preferred body type for another potential candidate, so it’s in your best interest, whether male or female, to post a photo of today’s version of you. If you’re posting a photo from twenty pounds ago, or a face shot from 5 – 10 years ago, I can promise you that you’ll have very few second dates.
5. Sunglasses and baseball caps? Fuzzy, low quality cell phone photos… yank them too. Browsing online profiles is a tedious and exhausting venture, and you will be overlooked if you are posting lousy photos that say that you really don’t care that much. It shows…
6. Solutions are plentiful. Look Better Online has gathered thousands of professional photographers together, all under one roof, to make it easy for online daters to get great, current photos. Just about everyone has a cell phone that takes decent photos. Whenever you’re taking the time to dress up a bit, have a friend take some photos of the adorable you, so you’ll constantly be capturing great, current photos.
7. Update your profile often. Most of the online dating sites are designed so they can detect when a new photo is loaded or a profile is updated, and those who DO update their profiles are “served” up higher in other’s searches, so it’s in your best interest to swap out and update your photos often.
