#35RUNYOUROWNRACE The only reason you need to run your own race by Julie Furlong. It’s easy to day dream and think about what life would be like if… It’s easy to compare your life to others… It’s easy to look through a magazine full of photoshopped glamour, and wonder... These are all common mistakes we make all the time. Because we are exposed to other people’s lives so often, we waste too much time comparing ourselves to others – it’s hard not to. I do it every time I go to the hairdresser and flick through a glossy magazine, or every time I drive past a billboard, or at the end of the day when I scroll through social media, it’s easy to get wrapped up in thinking that you don’t measure up. (Read: 10 Best positive self-talk tips)
BUT, NO MATTER WHAT THESE IMAGES IMPLY, NO ONE’S LIFE IS THAT PERFECT. THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS THAT THE ONLY PERSON’S EXPECTATIONS YOU HAVE TO MEASURE UP TO ARE YOUR OWN. ONLY YOU CAN RUN YOUR OWN RACE AT YOUR OWN PACE. The only responsibility you should have is to find out and decide what you love and what you are meant to do, and then do it as well as you can. Everyone will always have an opinion about what they think you should do, but your gut instinct will always be the most reliable. Then the only comparative you need to measure is the progress of you becoming the best version of yourself, by simply creating the habit of comparing you against you, asking: How much have I grown? What have I achieved? What progress have I made? Be happy that other people are having fun. Be happy that other people are successful, they’re on a completely different path from you, and they can be happy and have a great time and so can you. The secret of your satisfaction and happiness in life is found in your own daily routine (Read: 7 Good life habits to achieve happiness). So, my advice is to focus your attention on that and you’ll find that you will be more grateful for the things there. Have the energy to dream big, stay inspired and focus on achieving your own goals. Use your time and energy on learning and making yourself better. The moment you start looking over your shoulder at what other people are doing, you lose your own focus. And so, with all that in mind: run your own race. Don’t compare yourself with others. You are on your own unique journey. And as long as you move forward in your thinking, you are doing a great job. The more time you spend worrying about what others are doing, the less time you are focusing on yourself and your own success. (Read: What’s your worry) Be proactive, be persistent but most of all run your own race at your own pace.
