MILESTONEBIRTHDAYS,NOBIGDEAL Milestone Birthdays, NO BIG DEAL! by Julie Furlong This month marks a milestone birthday for me and I don’t think I am alone when I begin to panic about what the new decade will bring. There’s just something about moving into another decade and getting older that strikes fear within us. The truth is that no one cares about you getting older as much as you. Yes, it’s a good time to pause and acknowledge the things you’ve achieved in your life and where to next. Yes, it’s a good time to embrace your life and all the wonderful things that you have done. Yes, it’s a good time to be thankful for health, irreplaceable relationships, and the people in your life who will always make the difference. And yes, it’s a great time to get together with friends, have champagne and celebrate. However, milestone birthdays put many of us under pressure. The big numbers with a zero on the end have a tendency to make us more sensitive about our age and the time we have left to accomplish our goals. My take is not to view moving into the next decade as a life changing disaster or to take those goals you did not meet before a certain age as a failure.
MY VIEW IS TO FOCUS ON YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR INSTEAD. I’M SURE YOU WILL HAVE PLENTY OF POSITIVE MEMORIES TO LOOK BACK ON NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE IN YOUR LIFE. BUT MOST CERTAINLY, ALSO LOOK UPON THE MILESTONES, AS WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNT SO FAR – FOR ME THERE’S BEEN PLENTY; • I’ve learnt that we all have a role to play, and if we each do our part, with passion, purpose and intention, then we’ve done well. • I’ve learnt that I can’t and don’t want to keep doing everything I did in my younger years, but everything I can do, I do smarter than I did when I was younger. • I’ve learnt to be true to your dreams. After expectations and disappointments, it’s important to never stop dreaming and planning for the future. (Read: 10 great ways to fight for your dreams, never give up!) • I’ve learnt that a positive outlook and the right attitude will always serve you. (Read: Positive habits of thought) • I’ve learnt that showing your authentic self and being you, makes you feel great. You can’t control how others act towards you or what they think of you, but you can always be YOU. (Read: Uniqueness) • I’ve learnt that kindness matters. Being kind is more important than being right. Wherever there is a human being, there’s an opportunity for kindness and a small act of kindness can mean a lot to someone. • I have learnt that being grateful and appreciating each day will bring peace and acceptance. (Read: Enjoy the moments) • I have learnt that with age, comes peace and being present. I have peace in knowing I’m doing my best to raise my sons to have kindness, compassion and I am always present in their lives. • I have learnt that telling the truth with kind words will always bring the best result. • I have learnt not to expect too much from people, so I won’t be disappointed as often

The way I think about it, is that I still have a lot to learn, a lot to teach and a lot more to give, so why would a birthday milestone change that thinking? I’m going to keep focusing on what I want – those things that align with my dreams, and then I’m going to have the faith that things will work out for the best, regardless of the outcome. Sometimes we need to believe before we see. Your milestones can be whatever you want them to be. Live your own life. Think, what do you want your life to look like in five, ten, fifteen or twenty years? Take some time to review your situation and set realistic goals. Keep going and stop comparing yourself to everyone else. (Read: The only reason you need to run your own race). The older we get, we just get better at dealing with life’s abrasions, we become more grounded and more resilient. Thank goodness, I listened to my gut when it came to life-changing decisions, instead of waiting for a milestone birthday. Not only did I avoid disaster, but it also opened the doors for other amazing things to happen. Take full advantage, and ask yourself this question – what is the alternative?
