ATTITUDEADJUSTMENT–THEPOWERWEALLHAVE Attitude Adjustment – The power we all have by Julie Furlong Here’s an exercise to try this month. Make an effort not to complain for a week. Instead, try to replace any negative thoughts, opinions or remarks with positive ones. Visualise the very best out of every situation and see the improvement this makes on your attitude. Chances are you will not be disappointed with this attitude adjustment! Our attitude plays a big part in our everyday lives and can affect how our life may turn out in the future. We moved office last year. My colleagues and I remember the day clearly. We planned for weeks prior to the move. Confident we were totally organised. Unfortunately for us, I unknowingly engaged a very unhelpful, grumpy, angry, data man (GADM) to connect our cables. This man probably had one of the worst attitudes I have ever encountered. Even though he was briefed in advanced and in detail, everything become a problem on the day. According to him, nothing could be done easily. He shared his negative opinions and thoughts with everyone, regardless if you were prepared to listen or not. And rather than trying to find solutions during an already stressful time, he added to the stress by blaming anything or anyone in his path. His attitude was probably a product of his past experiences and events. He may have been raised this way, but he obviously had not worked out that he did not have to remain that way. The biggest mistake the GADM made (and some people also do) is underestimate how much of a difference his attitude makes to his day and everyone else’s. He had chosen a negative attitude, always expecting the worst. He made every problem a bigger problem, because of his attitude towards it and attempted to drag others to his level. He clearly needed an attitude adjustment. What a relief it was for all of us when he walked out the door at the end of that day. What a relief it was to know we didn’t need to be in his negative presence any more. The day after, I engaged someone else to complete the project, and although, it ended up costing the business more, I was just happy we no longer had to be around a person with such a bad attitude. You can’t control what other people do around you, but you can totally control your own attitude and reactions to a situation. Your attitude impacts your work performance, relationships and everything in between. Your attitude is the one solitary thing you have total control over. Your attitude is the first thing people pick up with face-to-face communication (Read: Why you shouldn’t forget the importance of face to face communication). People with a good attitude are delightful to be around. If there is a problem, they seek out a plan to solve it.

OUR ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING IN LIFE. People may be highly intelligent; be gifted and know everything. They may be beautiful to look at and have a perfect body. They may have all the nice clothes and seek out the latest, perfect make-up techniques to look presentable...yes, you can be beautiful on the outside. But a negative, attitude will not make up for all that, and will get you nowhere. No one wants to be around someone with a bad attitude.

SO, HERE’S A QUESTION FOR YOU. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND ON IMPROVING OR ADJUSTING YOUR ATTITUDE TO ENSURE IT’S YOUR BEST POSSIBLE? The good news is, you can control your attitude. (Read: 4 Simple questions that will help you realise what matters most). Are you going to be a positive or negative person? This is a choice you can make every day. A good attitude needs to be made on purpose. So, each day think about the small tweaks you can make to your own attitude for the better. Instead of being hard to get along with like GADM, wouldn’t you rather be respectful, loving and easy going? Instead of saying horrible things, wouldn’t you rather be the one who gives compliments? You can decide how you are going to see the world – and how the world sees you. Be the kind person who works hard (Read: 13 Essential tips to remember when starting a business) and is a believer in the fact that life is for living. You can decide whether or not your attitude is going to support you, or hold you back. People may not remember what you said – but they will always remember how you made them feel when you said it.

WHAT ATTITUDE DID YOU BRING WITH YOURSELF TODAY?
