Halifax Bathhouse //Halifax Waterfront

Winter 2017

/Tutor Talbot Sweetapple

This design process was an inside-out approach. Upon learning from the body’s senses, the concept of the bathing sequence is having the heat spaces in the introverted core, surrounded by the free cooling and resting spaces. This arrangement is also being expressed in the concrete and steel structure. The clear distinction of the public ground floor and the private bathing and treatment experience on the upper floors responds to the site location and program needs. This distinction is also reflected by the elevation design, where perforated screen is used. Skylights then become a crucial light source and connection to the exterior environment. Located next to the Maritime museum, the bathhouse free the waterfront boardwalk for public use. The proximity to the museum leads to the design of the art gallery, or common space, and the restaurant on the ground floor. The five outdoor pools in the plaza gives a water experience to the public and formally respond to the cores in the building. The building, together with the plaza, will introduce Haligonians to the bathing experience.

Fort Needham Community Centre // Halifax

Summer 2016

/Tutor Brian Lilley

The village-like media centre represents the rebirth of the community after the Halifax Explosion and relates to Needham Memorial Park through outdoor steps framed by buildings emerging from the ground. The centre is accessible to all members in the community, and hosts community events. Specifically, it offers members of the three neighbourhoods opportunities for film production and public screening.

Grid Grid

Locating in Toronto, the Makers’ Mart is an exploration of a surface design that can accommodate studiowork of artists and farmers market, with the program placements responding to the locations of the galleries and Go Train station on the site. Given the geometry of the folding, the roof forms stairs and courtyards - and even skiing surfaces - for the users.

GRIDSHELL ROOF WITH CLADDING

This project is a nature-themed pavilion that will accommodate a range of events within the Cape Breton Highlands National Park campground site. Through working on-site and camping for two weeks, I collaborated with students from Dalhousie University and Arizona; worked on the gabion walls, helped the preparation of the one-to-four model testing and concrete formwork and systems before casting.

studio|Brehaut architecture // Guernsey Cove, Prince Edward Island

Fall 2016 (Work Term)

During the work term at sudio|Brehaut architecture, I mostly spent my hours on generating computer models and producing sets of drawings for construction. I often had the chance to follow residential projects at different stages: from measuring and producing drawings for existing houses, to assisting my supervisor to make design decisions through computer modellings, and producing renderings for client meetings and then for constructions. Alexis’ Playhouse // Halifax

/Collaboration: Jim Chou

Summer 2017

The playhouse was designed to provide a fun, outdoor structure right outside Alexis’ bedroom window. Situated in the corner of the yard, the playhouse aligns with the driveway path, Alexis’ upstairs bedroom, and Nicole’s basement art studio. The openings on the playhouses are made in relation to these places: skylight frames the house, the higher openings frames adjacent trees, and the corner opening faces the yard.

Harbourview Deck // Dartmouth

Summer 2017

/Private Commission

For this second-floor deck addition, the design of the shaded area is primarily responsive to two needs: to provide shade for the south-facing deck in the summer time, and to give the least obstruction to the panoramic view of the Halifax Harbour. Located at the southeast corner of the deck, the shaded area greets the deck users with a tiki bar and faces the view of Atlantic Ocean. The design of the two planes appears to be light, floating on top of the deck users. While the plane with lower head height shades the tiki bar area, the other plane offers a more open feeling towards the view of the Atlantic Ocean. Since the higher plane is set back from the handrail, the deck users can choose not to be shaded given the different times and weather of the day.

’School Without Classrooms’ International Competition Held by Archasm

/Collaboration: Eloise Ma (Hong Kong), Mikayla Webster (Canada)

What does it mean to learn in today’s education system? What promotes a healthy learning environment? How do children best retain information and gain skills?

Our design is inspired by nature, flexible learning spaces, and the idea of creating an institution that supports the students, staff, and community as a whole. The natural elements in our design encourage students to learn about nature and gain a healthy appreciation of their surroundings.

Main School Building Gymnasium A senior center/Day Care

The building adjacent to the main school building is a space for athletic facilities. A senior center and day care above allows for mixed age groups, which encourages younger students to learn from their elders, and vice versa. By creating a semi-circular form, we intend to create a space that welcomes the public and encourages the community to utilize the school’s resources, including the library and performance spaces. This design breaks many of the traditional approaches to education, and new methods are explored.

Flexible Arrangement and Programme The main interior learning spaces are defined by movable bookshelves that can be used to create different sized spaces, depending on the needs of the students. Subjects will not be taught in the traditional way. Teachers will have short lessons with small groups of children throughout the day, and the rest of the time children will be free to work on self-directed projects. Having no permanent interior walls or strict syllabi gives the students flexibility to learn from each other, and challenge themselves.
