PERSONAL PROJECTS

In terms of architecture, hybridization is a method of assembling different elements in one building or urban area. Unlike the other way of blending separate programmatic entities, where each element is easily recognizable, hybridization involves components fusion into each other, each element thus lose a little of its original identity. Hybridization increases the potential link between activities by making them spatially and functionally interdependent. The nesting of elements increases the contact surface, the interface between programs, while the programmatic fusion blurs these spatial boundaries. Moreover, the complementarity and proximity of the functions allow greater interaction between different groups of users. This process, involving the formal transfer of functions, increases their interdependence and their relationships. Moreover, this method is often applied in Genoa.

Today the historical city of Carcassonne extended itself beyond its original fortification. Consequently, limits between city and nature aren’t obvious anymore. The Capucin area, where the project takes place, is one of those «in between» areas. Between «Nature» and «Culture». It is located at the border of the urban development and faces the river l’Aude. Considering this location, the objective was to create an interface between those two elements, using a metamorphosis of existing elements of the site into architectural shapes. A kind of rationalisation of the nature. The result is an hybrid architecture, generated by natural and cultural codes. The project is divided in two parts, the upper part of the site hosts all the public functions, sport activities, the parking lot as well as a forgotten spring. All these functions are gathered in a giant «rock» playing with the topography of the site. The lower part is occupied by the houses, hanging 5 meters above ground, as a forest of tree houses covering a parc. This Rurban Hybrid is an alternative solution for borderlines development which grows from the potential of the site and makes for a soft transition between city and nature.

The project begins by taking a critical position on most projects currently being developed in Chengdu, which reflect the decision makers’ addiction to the ubiquitous mixed use high-rise type. The context of the project is Chengdu’s new city centre currently being constructed on the southern edge of the existing centre. All of the existing urban fabric has been removed to make way for new development. Is Chengdu going to be a duplicate of Beijing or Shanghai after this fierce urbanization? Are there qualities that can make the new city “a different place”? From this basis, the project tries to answer one research question: How to interpretthe essence of Chengdu’s unique lifestyle and combine it with a model of centralized organization, to enableits vernacular culture to survive within a large scale and highly densified new urban environment. The project focuses on exploring interactions between outdoor spaces and how the distribution of programs drives circulation. The aim is to introduce a typology that cultivates difference through the coexistence of multiple types through hybridization and to develop a strategy for maximizing the intensity between local, metropolitan and global conditions.

Now a days cities like Chengdu develop horizontaly, the vertical growth of high rise building is just an extension of the private property on the ground level. The city doesn t gain anything in this 3rd dimension. This project propose to extend and complexify the city into this new territory. This 3rd dimension must be a continuity of the 2nd and propose an alternative in a dense city with higher and higher property value. Cube society is a three-dimensional infrastructure network organized in a horizontal, vertical and oblique street grid that offers short connection paths and higher urban density with better local communications, less social isolation, and higher number of neighbor interactions. This projects seeks to create a hyper-rectangle, where residents can occupy a building site on 3 dimensions. In order to make the project not just a generic mixed use building, all the programs need to interact with each other. This interface increases the potential link between activities by making them spatially and functionally interdependent. The interface spaces in this project are original spaces from the existing city fabric, which are the most characteristic spaces in Chengdu famous life style. They are proven to work well under the climate and cultural conditions, people are familiar with them and they are part of the city’s lifestyle. The complimentarity and proximity of the functions allow greater interaction between different groups of users. During the visitors’ journey they will pass varied urban elements along the route, and change experience both programmatically and spatially. Compare to connecting destinations in a linear way, this kind of journey will bring a sense of serendipity to the city and therefore add more interest to the urban quality. Cube Society is a project which has much more density than most existing developments in China, at the same time it provides more public spaces and accessibility, allows Chengdu’s joyful lifestyle to breathe and live within this urban superstructure. It is a hybrid project combines modern efficiency and the unique local culture; it introduces a typology that cultivates difference through the coexistence of multiple types through hybridization and to develop a strategy for maximizing the intensity between local, metropolitan and global conditions. Hopefully it will provide an alternative approach to the future Chinese urbanization process.

CHUAN SHANG TOWERS YEAR : 2012 LOCATION : CHENGDU, SICHUAN, CHINA TYPE : COMMISSION PROJECT PROGRAM : OFFICES, HOTEL, RETAIL AREA : 125 000 m²
The Chuan Shang Towers competition was won by Hanjia Design group in 2011. In 2012, the government modified the building regulations for the area of the project; the construction’s maximum height was adjusted from 150 meters to 70 meters. In spite of this requirement, the area and scope of the project remained and consequently, the project, which was composed of three towers higher than 100 meters needed to be fully redesigned. Respecting those new rules and the client’s needs, there were not many possibilities left and resulted in massive volumes difficult to reconcile with the site and the context. Facing this design challenge, the solution was to cut the buildings horizontally into slices of different sizes utilizing facade materials to create feelings of superposition and small simple volumes that as well resulted in generating further smaller scale outside spaces for the offices.
