No. 01 / THE RIBBON

The Ribbon is a platform that intersects a student residency and a library block, creating an elevated connection between the two buildings and establishing new relationships between programs and its inhabitants. Furthermore, The Ribbon has agency to transform the spaces it directly intersects, allowing those fragments to take on new dimensionality and characteristic that, ultimately, becomes a space of performance and theatrics. The residential area is comprised of student accommodation divided into intimate apartments units for one to four students, while the ground floor is occupied by commercial areas and cultural institutions such as cafĂŠâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, lounges, student amenities, recreational spaces, and an art gallery. Scalloped open-air corridors provide miniature spaces of assembly for students to gather and exchange ideas.

In collaboratin with Phil Carr-Harris and Nick Lupescu

The residence acts as the medium by which the students engage and integrate into society through a theatrical and exhibitionist lifestyle. This emphasis on transparency and casual visibility results in a self-regulating student society in which residents strive to perform exceptionally for their peers. With performance comes a degree of separation from our day-to-day lives that allows us to tackle the best and the worst of the human condition with an analytical furvert that would not otherwise be possible. The York residence aims to foster a community built around the ritual of performance, whatever form that performance ultimately takes on, people will be able to engage in open and productive discourse, live boldly, and face their fears. Performance is the catalyst for action.

No. 03 / RIVERSIDE

The Riverside project aims to instigate a zone of negotiation between the land and the water. It takes the existing trails and areas of the Grand river in Brantford ON and transforms them via structural intervention to encompass traditional riverside activities such as swimming, fishing, camping, eating, foraging, and other leisurely acts. The site is intertwined by a wiggling platform that connects one are of activity to the next. Dedicated campsites are scattered around. The project aims to create functional and vibrant spaces through moderate means: simple and sensible infrastructure that allow the natural environment and the proposed series of interventions coincide in a graceful manner.

No. 04 / SENBAZURU

In collaboratin with Colin Williams and Salman Rauf

The proposed space shall utilize Senbazuru as a means of transporting the individual to a realm of self reflection. Members of the design team shall fold over a thousand cranes as a symbolic gesture to the Japanese Canadian community â&#x20AC;&#x201D; bestowing good health and prosperity to all that enter. Senbazuru is an act of Japanese origin in which one hand folds one thousand paper origami cranes. According to an ancient Japanese legend, anyone who fulfills Senbazuru will be bestowed a wish by the gods.

No. 05 / METABOLIC CITY

The Metabolic City embodies a fragment of a hyper dense city of a dystopian future in which the ground plane of the world is uninhabitable. The dual spaces of the zone in focus are articulated through different styles of dance. The above ground pavilion is organized by classical traits of contemporary dance and ballet, and in contrast, the series of excavated caves below the surface are inspired by hip hop and urban dance culture. The urban fragment presents an architectural expression of gastronomical metabolism through a progression of differing atmospheres each programmed for the consumption of food. The selected zone of focus offers an antidote to the consistent consumption of energy that transpires within the rest of the metabolic fragment. It proposes a site where inhabitants of the city cleanse themselves by releasing energy gained through the seemingly infinite manners of consumption.

From August to December 2018 I was employed as an architectural intern at WXY Architecture + Planning. During my time there, I took part in conceptual design, schematic design and design development phases for various projects, competitions and proposals. I developed design ideas through a variety of representational media including conceptual diagrams, design drawings, and visualizations. The following are samples of my work under the employment of WXY.

September 12, 2019 RE: Julie Niu, Letter of Recommendation To whom it may concern: Julie spent August-December 2018 with the WXY team. I received extremely positive feedback from the Associates and senior staff under whom she worked. Julie consistently performed at a very high level and was a great asset during her four-month period here. Julie worked several competitions and urban design projects during her time here. For the Colgate University Master Planning competition, she prepared a series of site sections that proved critical to our understanding of the relationship between site topography and program. In addition to these analytical site sections, Julie also created program diagrams to illustrate new facilities on site. Our Times Square Alliance project, which leveraged the energy of Time Square to activate the Broadway Plazas (between 47th - 53rd Streets) also benefitted significantly from Julieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s close attention and illustrative skills. Julie created a series of annotated diagrams and plans to explain our streetscape strategy along the Broadway Plazas. Julie was a valuable team member for two of our Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) projects in New Rochelle and Downtown Brooklyn. DRI is an intense community-based design process that seeks to prioritize capital projects for funding by the Department of State. Julieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work on the project helped to reinforce a transparent community engagement process that empowered stakeholders and community leaders to identify and design catalytic projects that advance the communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision for revitalization. In both Downtown Brooklyn and New Rochelle, she developed a number of baseline condition maps and other graphics to support our geospatial analysis. She also supported the creation of clear and informative community engagement graphics for a number of public workshops. In addition to these core projects, Julie was also a great asset on our Captiva Master Plan team, where she developed research and baseline assessment drawings. Julie was a reliable and efficient member of both Detroit Greenway proposal and Gansevoort Peninsula competition teams, where she created diagrams, photocollages and renderings to depict proposed future conditions using Rhino and Photoshop. Her involvement at WXY was often on intensive projects that required quick edits from a large group of clients, consultants and stakeholders. Seeing through tasks, Julie willingly worked extra time to complete on her own accord, working well independently and as a part of larger project teams. Julie has a good work ethic and was a collaborative team member. She is a dedicated individual who understands and appreciates the value of challenging projects. Main Studio Section, Fish House and Bay House in view At present, the varying patterns of settlement across Captiva Island do little to trace the dynamics of its physical location. In other words, the parameters of livability are less considered than real estate value â&#x20AC;&#x201D; distance to the beach is worth more than elevation. While there is an allure to the position of Captiva at the edge of a narrow slip of sand, the question remains how that settlement can develop in response to the risks, vulnerabilities and strengths that are inherent to the landscape. Given this island reality, any dialogue on environmentally-induced adaptation must consider de-growth, de-investment and retreat as viable spatial alternatives, putting additional pressure on the role of the designer to accommodate such possibilities.
