EDITOR
Julie Oswin Welcome to the first edition of Creative Light for 2022. The global pandemic seems to be waning and as we slowly open up the UK and society, we can start to get back to something approaching normality, whatever ‘normal’ will be in the post-Covid-19 times. I am sure that the aftershocks of the pandemic will be felt by all of us for a considerable time, especially the personal loss of so many thousands of people, family and friends worldwide have suffered. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them. To kick-start the year, the Guild decided to feature the fantastic celebration of the Guild’s Annual Awards, which took place at Crewe Hall, Cheshire, on Saturday 5th February 2022. It was great for members to finally get together and celebrate the success of the membership after such a long time. In this edition we feature Anneka Lewis (Harden) who shares with Creative Light her series of work titled "Bringing Culture to my Images". We have the first of several articles from Mark Lynham on a series called ‘In Flight” which he combines his love of everything in flight. Peter Morgan from Tech for Togs, will be covering a series of articles called “Camera to Client” and will be talking about backups, workflow, and so much more. Enjoy! - Julie Oswin, Editor & Creator of Creative Light Magazine
FRONT COVER From all the 2021 winning images, the Judges had the monumental task of choosing the Guild's overall Image of the Year. It's an achievement to be nominated for, never mind, win one of the IOM Categories. Once the category winners are chosen they are put side by side to be judged again to select the overall winner! Congratulations to Sinead Bunn as her image was chosen by the Judges as the overall Image of the Year 2021. Sinead's image is featured on the front cover of this edition. Many Congratulations Sinead.

The Founder’s Cup Sponsored by Datacolor
The Guild of Photographers started life as the Guild of Wedding Photographers in 1988 and it’s founders were Roy Doorbar and Ian Gee. They both sadly passed away in late 2016, and the ‘Founder's Cup’ is a prestigious photography award which acknowledges what they started, and their aims of supporting photographers and raising standards in the industry by encouraging personal development. Entry comprises of a three image themed body of work, which is initially entered digitally. Following initial judging those selected as finalists then resubmit their work in a printed format for final assessment. The competition is restricted to those who have not won a national competition before and have not attained the level of Craftsman with the Guild (or equivalent elsewhere).

Peter Li is an award-winning photographer based in London. His architectural artwork received 1st place in the Architecture Category at the Epson International Pano Awards 2018 and was Commended at the Sony World Photography Awards 2018. His work has been featured in The Times, Time Out London and in various photography and art publications.
How did you get your start in photography? I started shooting with a DSLR camera back in 2013 when my first child was born. Like many dads out there, I wanted to document my growing family. Having a wife who studied art, she has a very artistic eye and I am very lucky to have someone who would give me an honest critique. In the early days, I was independently studying/self-teaching photography every day and practising on a daily basis.
What type of photography are you shooting and what motivated you to focus on that genre? In 2015, I met two aspiring photographers who shared their passion for architecture photography with me. Through their inspiration, I have learnt to be attentive in achieving symmetry and am mindful in my composition and line work. Living in London, we have all sorts of architecture; we often find a classic gem nestled amongst modern skyscrapers. I owe London for fuelling my passion for this genre.
What has been your biggest achievement or obstacle along the way? One of the biggest challenges is to photograph a space completely empty, and often it’s the hardest thing to do, so to prep for the best conditions I try to plan my visits on the days that are least busy, and getting up early to be the first person there. In London, interiors can be tricky because often they would not allow the use of tripods. But on the positive side, photographing around London I had trained myself to have a steady hand for a slow shutter exposure. 22

‘Megamind’ Royal Albert Hall, London. The auditorium of London’s Royal Albert Hall during lighting preparation for an upcoming show. It is fascinating to see the hall from floor to ceiling in such flying colours. The stage spotlight cast such dramatic shadows across the seating area and transforms the space into something quite otherworldly. It is a difficult scene to photograph, but challenging conditions often make great photos.
Who and/or what inspires you most? I often look for inspiration from paintings, movies and games. I started gaming from a very young age, and I think it has impacted my photography more so than any other art form.
What is your approach? Is there anything in particular you try to achieve during a shoot (for example triggering certain feelings, etc.) or are there any specific techniques you use? My work sits between realism and fantasy. Historical buildings such as Cathedrals or music theatres are often reminiscent of our history - they are intrinsically timeless and, in many ways, otherworldly.
‘Chessboard’ St Paul’s Cathedral, London. St Paul’s Cathedral is one of London’s finest Classic architecture gem, a masterpiece from Christopher Wren’s creations. My St Paul’s series has 3 parts, each section of the Cathedral has its very own style but marries seamlessly together. The chandeliers brighten the space evenly across the Nave, while the lack of deep shadows creates a minimalistic elegant scene.
With vertical panoramic photography (Vertorama), we are able to observe a three-dimensional space in its entirety, giving us a view/perspective beyond what the eye can see. It breaks us from reality, plays with our perception of shape and form and creates a sense of another world. Through my photography, I hope to impart fragments of fantasy to the viewer and encourage them to take a momentary step out of their reality
Why is accurate color important within your workflow? I print my work regularly, colour accuracy is very important, having a screen that could accurately render the colours will make the process much easier to manage. The subtle tonal difference of an image can convey a very different mood and message. https://amzn.to/2wDin8e Issue 47 - Creative Light Magazine : 23

Special Contribution Award DAVID ISLIP
This lovely gent started his photography journey by entering a school competition and coming second using an Instamatic camera. At that point, he realised he wanted a camera with ‘dials and things’ on the front. Little did he know then that he sparked a passion that would lead to a photography career lasting over 40 years! He joined the Guild team several years ago and has been a building block in the Guild Team framework, mentoring, judging, training without a blink between asking and doing. He is a wedding photographer covering weddings in Essex, Suffolk and the surrounding counties. He works alongside his ever-supportive wife, Sandra, and they guarantee a relaxed, polite, and friendly service! The combination of having photographed over 2000 weddings, achieving his Fellowship in Wedding Photography, being a Master Craftsman in Weddings with the Guild of Photographers and winning multiple WPPI International Awards of Excellence speak for themselves! David is a well-respected Judge and personal Mentor, and it gives the Guild of Photographers great pleasure in presenting this award to him. Steve & Lesley Thirsk Directors The Guild of Photographers

Special Contribution Award GAVIN PREST " I first met this very unassuming Yorkshire man when he came to the Guild’s stand at the NEC way back in 2013, with his peaked cap and portfolio of images under his arms to ask our Judges for a quick assessment of his work. It quickly came to light that he was a very talented photographer who greatly underestimated his true ability. Within 12 months, he had achieved his Qualified status and his Craftsman and Master Craftsman qualification with the Guild. He has been one of our well-respected Judges since he joined the Panel in 2016 During the Covid-19 Lockdown, he gave up many hours to the Guild’s webinars. I nick-named him our very own Michael Parkinson of Photography, interviewing many well-known Photographers and our members of the Guild for our Friday morning webinars, interviewing them from his sofa. He is a three x Master Craftsman Qualification holder, which is impressive. He is a photographer who loves to create images with a narrative, giving his viewers reasons to ask questions. Gavin specialises in many genres, including weddings, portraits, landscapes, events and commercial. He is also an internationally respected Judge whose skills are utilised at some of the worlds largest competitions. Anyone who knows Gavin will know he has a passion for using black and white film. In his words, “with a colour image, I feel you can sometimes be distracted by the different sensations on the eye whereas with black and white your focus is purely on the subject of the image.” He is an excellent trainer who has run many online webinars, featured in photography magazines and published his book, which sold out in days. In short, he is a well renowned and likeable photographer and one of life’s nice guys. He lives on the East Yorkshire coast, where he has volunteered time as part of Hornsea Inshore Rescue. He loves to spend time capturing his surroundings, be it the landscape surrounding him, the beach or even the people! For his contribution to Photography and The Guild– I give you a humble but very special Yorkshireman Gavin Prest." - Lesley Thirsk

Special Contribution Award DANNY CLIFFORD " If I mention, The Rolling Stones, The Who and Queen, to name but a few of the countless shots that this man has taken as Fly on the wall photographer, you'll probably have guessed who I am talking about. As a world-renowned Rock and Roll photographer, Danny Clifford has spent his illustrious career being allowed to be on the inside to the most iconic musical artists of the last 40 years, capturing so many fantastic memories. From his big break, aged 20, as Bob Dylan's official photographer in the late 1970s. Through his close working relationships with Queen, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Amy Winehouse and many other greats, the stories he has amassed over the years are just as vivid, colourful and dramatic as his photographs. Danny's images are held in the highest esteem by artists and appreciators alike; they are rarely exhibited and highly collectable. He is also such a nice guy, and we have had the privilege on many phone conversations and personal chats when he exhumes so much passion for everything, especially photography! If I continue to talk as much as Danny does, if you've ever met him, you'd know that we could be here all night. What a great ambassador Danny is to the Photography world. He has a super smile and willingness to tell you his fantastic stories of his antics and determination to become a Rock photographer and get into some of the Rock concerts he did, including hiding his camera. His contribution to the Photography industry shows no boundaries. He is generous with his time and passionate about the true value of a photographer's work and the need to protect it! Here's to you, a Photography Icon – Danny Clifford!" - Steve Thirsk

"Profit First - Business Course" EMMA CAMPBELL
" During the Covid-19 Pandemic, we launched a "Profit First" Business Course, which ran over ten weeks and was run by our friend Ronan Ryle from 3XM and the Business Success Academy. Ronan gave his time freely to this with positive results and many members participating. Guild members can still do the Business Course as the recordings on our website. Upon completion, you will receive the Guild of Photographers Business Qualification. We decided to review the Business Plans of those who finished the course in the last year and from those we chose the best Business plan, which was Emma Campbell's. Anneka Lewis (Harden)
BRINGING CULTURE TO IMAGES “ I became a professional photographer in 2014; I say professional as I had a business, but it wasn’t until 2018 that I found my style when I became a full-time photographer. I started my career using natural light in clients homes, but when I decided to do this whole business thing seriously, I switched to flash. In January 2019, I decided to enter the Guild’s IOM (Image of the Month) for the duration of the competition year and take it seriously; my work and style evolved. I found a love of bold colours, and most of my clients were of Indian heritage, and I would base my use of colour on what worked with skin tone, all the use of bold colours were so complimenting, and I absolutely fell in love. By the end of the competition year, I’d definitely found my style, and beyond my wildest dreams, I’d actually done very well in the IOM. That year I obtained Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards. I wanted to do something new; 85% of my clientele were Asian, and I wanted to bring their culture into my images. So, I approached a couple of clients, mentioned it in sessions, and by December 2019, I did my first ‘wedding sari image’. Once I had posted this to Social Media, the response was amazing.

I began taking bookings based on those images, and to date, I’ve carried out over thirty sessions for my clients. I think it’s a lovely thing for a Mum to include at her session a ‘wedding sari image’ as Mum’s aren’t going to wear it again, especially if you have a daughter. It’s a timeless piece of imagery. I’ve used grandmas’ saris and the mother-in-law too! Thinking out of the box, I then wanted to introduce something else with my cultural images and a lot of the time; the creativeness doesn’t happen until I’m with my clients. I am still a mobile photographer and one day arrived at my client’s home to do their newborn session, the baby's dad opened the door, and his appearance instantly wowed me. He was striking, long beard, very tall and wearing his turban; I immediately knew I wanted to photograph him. He did take some persuading, but then he really got into it. He held his daughter with pride and embraced his involvement in the session. He wore his traditional clothes and kirpan, and we sat down after the session; I listened intently about the Sikh religion and what it meant to him; I was fascinated. He allowed me to share his image for the image of the month competition, where it was awarded a silver. A few months later, I wanted to recreate something similar with an older baby, and I wanted a father and son shot. I talked to my local post office owner, whose niece had not long had a baby; we exchanged details, and the preparation started for my most recent shot. The only one planned to date; all the others were client shots at their sessions. We had discussions over social media, and I arranged to do the session once her baby was around six months. On the day, the dad and his son looked amazing; the plan was to have the baby awake sitting on Dad’s knee, but he fell asleep in dads arms, and the shot I got was just precious. Involving culture within my images has become so important to me, not only to stand out and produce different work but also to include something of enormous importance for my clients. - Anneka Harden-Lewis

In Flight
My photography journey started in 2012 at the ripe old age of ?.. after doing an intense three-month Open University photography course. From there, I was hungry to learn more and had the good fortune to come across a gentleman who would become a big part of my photography, Andrew Appleton! He was about to run his first workshop close to where I lived, so I decided to give it a go and loved it. After the first course with Andrew, I attended over 15 workshops in various genres, including studio lighting, off-camera flash, art nude, boudoir and weddings. Andrew introduced me to the Guild of Photographers and the competition that would become a massive part of my journey; the IOM! Over the six years that I entered, I was the Guild's POTY for three years and won the Open category for four years.. From there, I was asked to be a panel member, so a new journey began last year. In the beginning, I would shoot any genre as you pick up different bits from each. Still, as the years have gone by, I have naturally narrowed down the genres that give me the greatest pleasure: modern military aviation and birds- both have similarities in the way they are photographed. Both can often share the frustrations of coming across what you want to see. 2021 saw another year hit by Covid and the restrictions that came with it. The bigger airshows were cancelled for the second year running, which left me with only one again, a ‘drive-in’ airshow at Old Warden with the older airframes, namely the Shuttleworth Collection. Whilst enjoyable, I prefer the fast jet engine aircraft over the older propellor ones. But then a cunning plan came about, and we purchased a caravan and kept it at a park very close to a United States airbase in Suffolk, and we visited each month between April and September. The plan was to shoot aircraft and wildlife from there, but truth be told, aviation took over, and the wildlife took a bit of a back seat.

The two bases that took up much of my time over the year were RAF Mildenhall, a United States Air Force support base and home to the 100th Air Refueling Wing, and RAF Lakenheath being a USAF fighter squadron, home of the 48 Fighter Wing. Both offer plenty of airframes to shoot, and where a lot of my shots featured here have come from. (just an aside, both bases are owned by the RAF but currently used by the United States Air Force). The other bases that I visited were RAF Coningsby in Lincoln, home to various RAF Typhoon Squadrons and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, including the Lancaster Bomber and Spitfires Hurricanes and a Dakota. I also visited RAF Fairford to view aircraft on a temporary deployment from America that I wanted to see. Apart from visiting airbases at the fence, I made one low-level trip to the Lake District. Low-level aviation is probably the most frustrating of what I enjoy doing as there is no timetable, so you have to gamble on where to go and sit and wait. During the four days that we spent in the Lake District, we only saw aircraft on one of those days, so for the rest of the time, it was just sitting on a hill, on a cold September day, taking in the breathtaking views. Towards the end of the year, I wanted to get some wildlife photography in. So I booked some time into some paid hides, not something I would typically do, but time wasn’t on my side. The species I wanted were challenging to get close to without putting in a reasonable amount of hours and having a lot of luck; these were the Buzzard and the Kingfisher. However, I also managed to get some shots of Red Kite, which was a bonus. Over the next editions of Creative Light Magazine I will be sharing with you the various elements required to achieve results of the wonder of mechanical and feathered birds in flight. - Mark Lynham MCrGP Panel Member & Judge

Peter Morgan
CAMERA TO CLIENT SERIES Peter loves photography and gadgets. It would be safe to say he is obsessed with technology. He has worked in the computer and telecommunications industry from the age of 16. Peter is an Apple and Windows Engineer, Backup and Disaster Recovery Specialist and has been supporting individuals and businesses for over thirty years. He started a professional photography business in 2014 after selling his IT company to pursue his love of photography. Peter soon found out that his IT skills meant that great photographers trusted him with their businesses technology. Often he would trade his IT repair skills for photography training to learn as much as he could about every different genre and type of photography to create his own unique and quirky style. Like many other photographers, the global pandemic postponed Peter’s primary job as a professional photographer, so he began looking at the real problems photographers and creatives faced daily. This is when his idea for ‘Tech for Togs’ came into fruition as he was constantly being asked for help on Facebook Group with an average of 20 requests daily. He now runs this with his business partner Ross Grieve. Many photographers don’t have a robust, stress-tested backup solution. As a photographer, Peter finds that having the solution, workflow, and knowledge is invaluable for the creative industry. Peter will be creating a series of articles on “Camera to Client”. Starting with his first article giving an insight into the types of external storage devices available to photographers for use in backup scenarios and the Pro’s and Con’s of both.

TYPES OF STORAGE DEVICES Storage Devices - what’s the best for me? STANDALONE USB-3 OR USB-C DRIVES Standalone drives are quite inexpensive compared to real professional solutions, and whilst most are manufactured well unless implemented into a planned system, they have no redundancy or failover. They would be most suited to non-professionals or hobbyists to keep non-essential data on or transport photos or data from one location to another. They come in 3 sizes; 3.5-inch desktop drives, 2.5-inch portable drives, and m2 SSD Blade drives, which are smaller, faster and more expensive with many different configurations and sizes. Windows drives will come pre-formatted with NTFS, while MAC will use either the extension or the extension of MACOS extended or APFS. These are incompatible, and EX-Fat should be used when both systems are in play in a singular workplace.
PRO’S • • • • •
Inexpensive, currently less than £40 for a 1TB USB-3 drive. Useful for carrying with you to transfer data to and from multiple machines. Can be powered by mains plug or USB (in the case of smaller portable devices). Some of the companies offer a recovery solution if data is lost. USB-C SSD drives are very fast at transferring data back and forth.
CON’S • Open to failure if constantly plugged and unplugged weak point is the computer’s connection. • Zero redundancy as if the drive fails, the data is lost. • Unless you buy a rugged version of a drive, they are prone to dust, water and accidental damage.

NAS (NETWORK-ATTACHED STORAGE) A series of Hard Drives are housed in a box (known as an enclosure) which are connected to your network via Wi-Fi or a cable plugged into the router. Typically the NAS would reside in your home or place of work and can be seen by multiple computers or devices. The NAS acts as a central storage hub for backing up, sharing and retrieving data. The drives are made to look like one big drive using clever software or hardware called RAID built into the device.
PRO’S • A large storage device that can be read from and written to by multiple devices both in the home and over the internet. • Possibility to upgrade the amount of storage space at a later time. • Having multiple drives means that the risk of a drive failure and data being lost is spread over the hard drives. This provides redundancy and risk management. • In larger configuration units, data transfer speed and redundancy improvements can be seen with specific data aggregation set-ups.
CON’S • It can be incredibly slow to retrieve files if not attached to the network or set up properly. • The professional-grade systems are initially expensive to purchase. • Most professional NAS systems come as the enclosure only and require the user to buy the internal drives separately. It can be quite technical to set up initially. Most of them require regular firmware (software) updates to work with the newest operating systems. 86
: January | February 2022 - Issue 47
USB RAID ARRAYS (HYBRID) A series of Hard Drives are housed in a box (known as an enclosure) which are connected to your network via Wi-Fi or a cable plugged into the router. Typically the NAS would reside in your home or place of work and can be seen by multiple computers or devices. The NAS acts as a central storage hub for backing up, sharing and retrieving data. The drives are made to look like one big drive using clever software or hardware called RAID built into the device.
PRO’S • Portable. • More cost-effective than a full NAS solution. • 1 Disk redundancy. • This particular model has a built-in SD Card Reader for backing up your cards when plugged in, meaning it could be used on-site or at home to provide multiple backup locations using Lightroom’s additional backup location option.
CON’S • More expensive than a traditional single drive solution. • It can only be used by one machine at a time. • No over the internet availability. • Replacing the broken drives in the event of a failure often means sending the device back to the manufacturer for repair.
Summarising Storage Devices - what’s the best for me? When choosing one of these solutions, the real thing to think about is to look at what’s most important to you: cost, data size, speed of access needed, portability and availability of access to data. For most hobbyists or photographers starting, a standalone additional backup drive would work. A Synology 1821+ multiple raid NAS will be a better option for bigger studios and professional photographers.

Successful Qualified Panels January 2022
“An excellent reason for joining the Guild is to submit your work for assessment and progress through our membership levels. It is a way to measure and evidence your skill level, as well as show your customers that you are committed to providing them with the very best service. Whilst photography-related qualifications have always been a controversial issue, how do you judge an art form? Our ‘Qualified’ status aligned to the standards of competence that reflect a level where the customer should be ‘pleased with the results’ when employing the services of a skilled tradesman (the photographer). In other words, ‘Qualified’ indicates professional ‘competence’ to a level where the Guild is willing to recognise the photographer as an ambassador of the association, so those who achieve that level should be proud of doing so”. - Steve & Lesley Thirsk

DEMYSTIFYING COPYRIGHT The value of registering with the US Copyright Office - regardless of where you live When a photographer clicks the shutter button on their camera, they instantly become the copyright owner of the image created. Plainly put, owning the copyright means that the photographer has the exclusive right to reproduce, publish, or sell his or her original work (the image). An image used on or offline is, therefore, a copy of the original and requires the explicit approval of the photographer prior to use, typically through a licensing agreement or contract. To non-photographers, this concept is typically quite foreign. 94
: January | February 2022 - Issue 47
Many, including businesses, wrongly assume they are able to simply reuse an image they find on Google or Instagram, or the internet. As a result, image theft today is rampant across the internet, threatening the sustainability of the professional photography industry. Pixsy believes that every photographer should decide when and how their images are used, empowering photographers to protect their intellectual property rights through an AIpowered image monitoring and copyright infringement resolution service.
Pixsy currently monitors over 100 million images and has partnered with a network of over 25 law firms worldwide to handle over 100,000 copyright infringement cases for their photographer clients. As part of the protection and resolution process, Pixsy assists its photographers to register copyright ownership with the US Copyright Office (USCO) including bulk registrations of up to 750 images per registration. It is often believed that USCO registrations are limited to US-based photographers, however, registration is open to anyone and serves to protect photographers internationally against US-based infringements. With over 70% of the matches and infringements handled by Pixsy taking place in the United States, USCO Registrations are an integral part of any photographer’s toolkit. Not only does registration protect your work, it also increases the legal recourse available and increases the eventual settlement value in the event of an infringement. In order to file a lawsuit in the US for example, a USCO Registration is a requirement.
In order to file a lawsuit in the US for example, a USCO Registration is a requirement. If the registration was completed in a timely fashion, that is within the first three months of an image’s publication or before the date of infringement, then a photographer may be entitled to statutory damages of up to $150,000.
During the month of March, Pixsy will be offering a free consultation to Guild members with a Copyright Specialist. All GOP members have access to a special free partner plan, and access to all the protection tools and services Pixsy has to offer.
