FINAL YEAR THESIS VISUAL VIGNETTES OF GEELONG’S PAST a preview of the creative research project

RESEARCH STATEMENT

ABSTRACT

Re-viewing the history of Geelong through archival visual photographs as a lens to understand the industrial image in the present state of de-industrialisation.

This thesis looks at the importance of past images as a method of collecting and collating the identity of place. The images of the past show this identity of a place to be fragmented, discontinuous, and lost. Yet, the longevity of the images, capturing moments of the history of the place, engender not only a memory of the past, but a question about the continuing presence of that place. The focus of this thesis is on Geelong and this review of its past is a response to the current challenges of transformation and future projections of its industrial sites. It asks us to revisit history through viewing images that capture time that represent what were once significant parts and landscape of Geelong’s identity. The images are visual documents of the past in the media of digital photographs, picture postcards, and paintings. They present information on architecture, land, and events that have disappeared. The gap between gap between this information, histories, and their disappearance underlies a notion of vacancy. Vacancy in the context of Geelong’s industrial sites, is understood by re-visiting the past through images. Collating the images and how they are viewed develops the thesis as a series of visual vignettes of Geelong’s past. The creative components of this thesis use the image collection as materials to explore the new ways of looking at images. The two-dimensional image is also explored as a lens of the third dimension, in this case, as an architect would look at the site the image represents. The images have many layers; temporal as fragments of time; pictorial as scenic landscapes, and representational as historic detail of a site. To delve into these layers may mean to deconstruct the full images from its unified totality into layers. Visual materiality is also reviewed as a way to observe the relationship between image and architecture. Both present a time in history time that is displaced in future periods of time, but this time continues to be visible as long as images are preserved. The research raises the question of how we document the past in architecture. How do past images of built forms and site exist in the present and future city? Are we moving too expediently, like pixels and resolution have begun to appear so clearly? Can we re-visit the industrial past in places that have become vacant in their built purpose? The vacant image of Geelong is a precious form of beauty that is intriguing in the context of expedient development which aims towards a populated future.
