THEN AND NOW

Looking back, dreams have changed By LAUREN HELSTAD Paw Print Reporter

When kids are younger, they have hopes, dreamsand special preferences for just about everything they do. As time goes on, people grow and develop new wants and needs. As the 2015 seniors wind down to their last days at Black River Falls High School, they reflect on these changes in time. KASEY KOPP

Loved to play with Barbies, now loves cheer Kasey Kopp

“My sister has always been a huge impact on me. That is how my influence with barbies and cheerleading came around. She always loved Barbies, so that’s why I loved them, too. I wanted to be just like her. Then, when she was too old for Barbies, she got

into cheerleading, and so I would always go to her practices with her, and I got really into it. I figured I had to do whatever she would take up next, and so I fell in love with cheerleading.”

Dreamed of being an astronaut. Plans changed.

“I was a basketball kid when Matt LaFaunge I was younger. I’d always loved watching the Badger basketball team at the Kohl Center, and one day I knew I wanted to go to Madison. As time went on, my passion for football rose, and I knew I wanted to take my football career to the next level. What we will miss and what we won’t miss go and visit if I miss them. College is going to be hard without my friends,” said Hanna Hodge.

By TIA LOFTSGORDON Paw Print Reporter

As April rolled into May, seniors started reflecting on the things that they are going to miss and the things that they are not going to miss about high school.

I will miss those special moments Ihave had with people in my high school career. Jessa Amman ‘15

Breanna Krause-Huser, senior

“I won’t miss busy work or petty drama,” said Breanna Krause-Huser.

“I will miss seeing my best friends everyday, and the not-so-close friends you say hi to in the hallway,” said Tiffany Gorski. “I won’t miss the incredible amount of unruly, uncooperative, and unintelligent minds floating along in the halls,” said Gary Ramos.

“Something that I will miss about high school is being so close with all of my friends every day and knowing that they are right down the street to

“I won’t miss having to get up at 6:40 a.m. every day for 13 years,” said Brent Funmaker. “I won’t miss waking up every morning,” said Eli Parker. “What I would miss about high school is having a daily schedule every weekday, and I would miss seeing my friends at school,” said

Kelsee Bradt, senior

“I’ll miss the friends that I’ve made throughout the years. I’ll miss the teachers that we had my junior year. I’ll miss the fun times that we’ve had in choir and the beautiful music we’ve made throughout the years,” said Kelsee Bradt.

“I think I’m going to miss knowing everyone in high school. In college there won’t be many (or any at all) familiar faces, while in high school you can literally name everyone in your class,” said Erin Rodenberg

Liz Lipke, senior

“Things that I won’t miss are the lunches, being extremely hot/cold in the school, the bad substitutes, being around the underclassmen, having people lock your locker, and having to be fully functioning by 7:45 am. But overall, I think I’ll miss it more than I realize now,” said Liz Lipke

“I will miss seeing all of my really good friends that I made in high school and the years before, and I will miss those special moments I have had with people in my high school career,” said Jessa Amman.

BLUSH-WORTHY

What once made these seniors cringe now material for laughs By ALISHA QUALL Paw Print Reporter

After 13 years of education in a small town, embarrassing moments are sure to pop up and are almost always remembered.

I was running down the hallway and something slipped out of my bag. My friends who were running with me stopped and started laughing. I turned around and the janitor was pointing at my bra, which is what fell out of my bag. That was the most embarrassing moment in high school,” said Gracie Rave.

“I was playing the field in big base and one of my friends who was on the other team kicked the ball, ran up behind me and pulled my gym shorts down in front of the entire gym class,” said Brandon Dragsteveit. “In second grade, Jackson Perry threw up all over me, and I had to walk down to the office covered in vomit,” said Matt LaFaunge. “[My] most embarrassing moment was [the] summer between freshman and sophomore

“So, cool fact: I have double jointed hips and they always pop out of socket, and usually I end up falling down. Well, I was walking down the hallway with Sierra and the biggest crush of my life was standing at the end talking to his friend. Before I know it, my hip pops out, and I totally biffed it right in front of him, and he definitely saw it. Better yet, I couldn’t get up and just walk it off. It really hurt, and I stayed on the ground for a while,” said Miranda Schnur. “Senior year, I was running full speed down the hallway because it was early in the morning, and I didn’t want to be

late, and I was turning the corner down the blue hallway and then I straight up wiped out. Like all the way down on my chest. My hands smacked the floor, and I almost died. I even yelled ‘woah’ really loud. Luckily, the hallway was mostly empty, so only a few people saw it, but when I got back into the classroom, everyone knew I had fallen because they heard me yell and then heard me smack the ground,” said Lauren Harkner.

“8th grade. Variety show. I had the brilliant idea of singing James Blunt’s “Goodbye My Lover.” It was incredibly unfitting for an 8th grader to be singing such a song, and it was just incredibly awkward. FRESHMAN FLASHBACK

Looking back four years, a lot has changed By BRITTANY HILL Paw Print Reporter

Some may think high school will be a long four years. With all those tests, essays, homework deadlines and projects, by the time it ends, those four years went by in the blink of an eye. These are some memories you can look back on from your first year of high school. Dec 13, 2011 Facebook Post I had to scrape gum off of my desk today. They didn’t have skim milk at lunchtime. Forgot my locker combination for kind of a funny reason. Not the best day ever. “I remember walking into the high school my very first day and thinking that there was no way that I would get to know my way around. I also remember saying that there was no way that my group of friends will change and that I will never change. I was wrong about all of those things, but once I got used to my routine, everything started to fall into place, and now I can’t believe that my high school career is almost at its end. Hanna Hodge

“I believe this was my freshman year? KayCee Sanders, Heather Youngthunder and I were making a cupcake/ cake tower for KayCee’s birthday (we also ended up making a pizza roll tower with 300 pizza rolls, which we ate all of at 3 a.m.), and ended up getting into a frosting fight. SCHOLAR ATHLETES Tennant, LaFaunge earn conference award settle for good. Be great! I recommend setting team and personal goals every year and work your tail off to achieve them. Don’t go through high school without trying something new. These years you never get back and the memories you will make will last forever.

By MORGAN ANDERSON Paw Print Reporter

Matt LaFaunge and Karly Tennant earned the 2015 Scholar Athlete Award. These two athletes have been working hard for years now and their hard work has now paid off! To be an All Conference Scholar Athlete winner, an athlete must have a 3.5 or higher GPA during the grading term his/her sport is taking place and earn a varsity letter in the sport. How do you manage school and sports? KT: Managing school and sports is not always easy, especially when you’re a three-sport athlete. I always tell myself that it’s school that comes first, then sports. If I can’t do well in school, then I can’t participate in sports. ML: These past four years, I have used the time given in class to complete as much of the work as I can so I am able to focus on my sport after school. The time you put into sports has to be put into school otherwise it won’t work out. Does school and having good grades make you more determined in your sports? Why or why not? KT: Having good grades definitely makes me more determined because like I

said before, if I can’t keep my grades up I can’t be a part of sports, and that would be devastating! ML: Well, yes! I like to say that if you are disciplined and do well in school, that will transfer over to the sports you play. It is all about having a positive mindset and wanting to achieve excellence in school and sports. I strive to do the best I can in anything. Who doesn’t want to be good at something? I know this is a huge achievement. How do you feel about it? KT: When I found out that I was receiving this award I felt so unbelievably thankful. I could not have been more proud. When you receive something as awesome as that, it really makes you think about how all your hard work and dedication has paid off.

ML: This was quite an honor for Karly and myself. It is a great feeling to know that the hard work in school and in sports has paid off for the both of us and hasn’t gone unnoticed. Any advice for younger athletes? KT: My advice for younger athletes is to constantly remind yourself that anything is achievable, even if at first you aren’t where you want to be. Just keep setting your goals high, and one day you with be the athlete you’ve always wanted to be and better! ML: To the younger athletes: Enjoy your time playing the sports you love. There is nothing like competing in high school sports and your time here really does fly by. Work your tail off and never

What has been your biggest challenge at the high school leve—academically or athletically? KT: Biggest challenge for me, which I have been working on since I’ve started high school, is to break the 800 record for track! The record stands at 2.26. With all my hard work thus far I am now down to a 2.28. I’m going to continue to set my goals high this last year to finally break that record. I’m still just grateful that I was able to receive this award. All thanks to my amazing coaches and my wonderful family. ML: Athletically, my biggest challenge in high school was playing varsity in every sport my freshman year. While that came with praise, it also came with doubt from people. Some people didn’t think I deserved to be on varsity, but I felt I was good enough. Also, playing two sports in the spring was a lot to handle when it came to school, but I got through it just fine, and I don’t regret it at all!

PLAYING FAVORITES

Teachers bring motivation, inspiration By ALISHA QUALL Paw Print Reporter

Many teachers and students in Black River Falls have special relationships that help make students’ days brighter. “My favorite teacher is Mr. Lobenstein. He has always pushed me as a student as well as a writer. He works hard to reach his students on a personal level and is always trying to connect with us. He is a teacher I feel comfortable going to if I have a problem in class and he is willing to go the extra mile to help students understand and comprehend their homework.” Kasey Kopp

Senior Kasey Kopp chose English teacher Brad Lobenstein as her favorite teacher. Students are more likely to refer to the AP English teacher as “Lobi.”

Mr. Boerger is a very understanding teacher who pushes students to do their best. He makes all of his classes enjoyable and fun especially with his famous “Bad Candy” quizzes. He is always there to give advice and help in anyway he can.” Erin Rodenberg

Buckets lists set high aspirations By ALEY PHILLIPS Paw Print Reporter

With exciting freedom near the end of their high school career, many students have fun ideas for their future adventures. However, some goals might be so bizarre or special that it may only happen once in a lifetime. Goals like this are reserved for a bucket list, and these seniors have exciting plans. “Backpacking across Europe.” Riley Emerson “I have always wanted to conquer my fear of heights.” Jaquelin Leisgang “Go to Fashion Week.” Kristen Johnson “Form a rock band.” Bo Kindt “I’ve always wanted a black eye. Go to the day of the dead in Mexico.” Mercedes Peters “I have always wanted to kiss someone at random who I see walking down a crowded big city street, just to see what 14 | BRFHS Paw Print | June 2015

“Visit all 50 states, and donate 10 gallons of blood.” Sabrina Gunning “I have always wanted to go to Vegas with all my friends!” Taylor Hamilton “Go to the moon.” Eric Markhardt “Pet a tiger, go scuba diving, and ride a dolphin.” Kasey Kopp “Something I have always wanted to do, would be to honestly help out with a charity. In particular, one that deals with Osteosarcoma. My best friend passed away from it, and I would honestly love to set up some sort of fundraiser for it or something along those lines.” Katelyn Breheim “Diving in the sky.” Brent Funmaker “Swim with Blue Whales.” Kimberly Brierton “Finish a tube of chapstick before losing it.” Taylor Inches

“I’ve always wanted to go on a big camping/roadtrip with my friends. Just like four or five of us, pack up a car and just drive and explore, and spend time together doing things like hiking, canoeing, sightseeing. I think it would be really fun.” Breanna Krause-Huser “Go to all of the restaurants that give away free stuff on your birthday. On my birthday.” Lauren Harkner “Go skydiving, and go scuba diving down in the Florida Keys.” Jessa Ammann “I have always wanted to go to Lego Land in Mall of America.” Clint Voge “I’ve always wanted to travel to a different continent and learn different cultures.” Adriana HernandezWhite “Since I was a little girl, I’ve been fascinated with the Aurora Borealis, so the first chance I get I’m going North!” Mary Onstad

ARTIFACTS OF THE PAST Stuffed animals and blankets not yet abandoned By ALEY PHILLIPS Paw Print Reporter

“Stuffed animals.” Jayden Gjerseth

As “grown-up” as the 2015 seniors may be, each has her own few childish habits or tidbits she’s kept throughout the years.

“A baby blanket—which is now in shreds, but I still have it.” Sabrina Gunning

“I have an outfit that I wore for my baby pictures. I would use it on my baby dolls. I still have the outfit today, but not the baby doll.” Tiffany Gorski “I still have a stuffed POW MIA dog that my grandfather gave to me.” Devin Newby “I still have my big, old stuffed Blue (from Blue’s Clues). I also have a tiny karate outfit in my closet. Unfortunately, that doesn’t fit.” Gary Ramos “My green blanket that I had as a baby. My parents tried get me a new one— it was basically shreds— when I was younger ,but I threw the new one out.” Kelsee Bradt “I have a stuffed rabbit.” Jayme Miller

“My pink Care Bear!” Taylor Hamilton “I have all of my Winnie the Pooh stuffed animals. Still have them to this day.” Katelyn Breheim “I still sleep with the teddy bear I got when I was 3.” Kasey Kopp “I kept my first pair of shoes.” Brandon Drangstveit “I still have a giant Winnie the Pooh teddy bear and a large Pooh Bear blanket. I liked Pooh Bear as a kid...a lot.” Taylor Inches “I had this blanket as a baby. It’s kind of like a small quilt and it has, like, little bunnies and carrots on it. I still sleep with it every night.” Breanna Krause-Huser

From baby blankets to care bears, seniors still hold on to momentos of the past. Some seniors have habits they can’t break, like wiping the makeup from their hands onto their walls.

“My very first football when I was two that I got. It says ‘future star’ on it.” Jordan Rondorf “I have a stuffed bear I’ve had since 1st grade. And I used to wipe makeup on the wall when it was on my hands, and I still do it.” Lauren Harkner “I still sleep with a stuffed animal. It doesn’t have to be a stuffed animal. It can be a small pillow. I just need something to hug when I am sleeping since I normally sleep on my side. If I sleep on the couch, I just use a little white pillow that we have. If I am sleeping over somewhere and I did not bring a stuffed animal or a small pillow, then I usually just bunch up a sweatshirt and use that

instead. If I don’t have anything to hug when I am falling asleep, I will not fall asleep, and if I do fall asleep I will not sleep that good.” Jessa Ammann “Baby blanket.” Clint Voge “I always used to walk on the tip of my toes. I thought I would outgrow it, but I still find myself doing it sometimes.” Amara Baker “I do everything in even numbers, for example, the number of steps I take while walking or I make patterns. I have a teddy bear that I [have slept] next to every night ever since I was two weeks old.” Adriana HernandezWhite June 2015 | BRFHS Paw Print | 15
