How do I design?

Design should come from our life experiences that constantly push us out of our comfort zone and into the unknown. Leaving us to constantly discover, create and innovate. Have a clear understanding of the way people communicate and interact with an objects by doing hands on research and prototyping. The details should explain the object with nothing more that its form, allowing it to seamlessly be understood. It should be distinguished with purpose, balance, and awareness. Creativity should never have limits, it should be lead by the power of our intuition, inspiration and i n g e n u i t y.

Cyan is a tool for a physical therapist but it is a shoe for patients to wear during physical therapy. It’s aimed to help tracks walking and balance progress through the shoe on a daily to weekly basis to better assist the patient and the physical therapist

How can a physical therapist and a patient connect for a faster recovery?

Physical Therapist

Patient The Solution

I N SP I R AT IO N O BS E RVAT ION

Meet Chloé.. . “I hated therapy because it was so difficult to get up and try to get better everyday when I didn’t feel I was getting better”.

“Sometimes I cheated my way through therapy like when I walk, it’s all about time and once the time is finished I’m finished for the day”.

My sister, this is her 2 ears after she had brain surgery that had left her right side of her body paralyzed for several weeks. With months of therapy she was a able to make a full recovery. Occupation: High School Student, 17years of age

TIRR Memorial Herman Hospital – Houston, Texas

I met with a few physical therapist and orthetists, I was able to observe patients during their therapy

This is where Chloé did most of her therapy

O b s e r vat i o n

One observation I made, was that patients don’t have a way to know if they’re making the full movement recommended by the physical therapists.

How can a shoe help a patient recover faster?

Solution A shoe that can track full movements and be downloaded into a computer database to keep weekly progress’ for the physical therapist

Using light

Pressure sensors from heel to toe

Indicator (Force sensor Resistor)

Heel to toe...

Goal

Using a Force Sensor Resistor in the heel and toe area, a gradient light at the top of the shoe indicates the amount of pressure put from the time they strike their heel to pushing off with their toe

Loaded into Computer database and charts progress

Ideation Sketches //

Toe sensor resistor is lso embedded into the sole

Arch support for better stability Arch should never bend inward to insure any injury Battery conductor is casted into this part of the sole and batteries in shoe use conduction

Heel sensor is embedded here and Striking the heel triggers the light and pressure sensors

Light sensors light up with pressure and signal the patient their goal zone

What tools do they currently use?

1

Shoulder pains occur over time and biceps strain only letting employers clean a limited amount of boats per day

2

S O LU T IO N J UMPED IN T H E WATER

My findings... Strain on wrist Only biceps are strained when at wrist position

Non-slip grip texture helped with handling Most comfortable wrist position when horizontal from foam

Body stays pretty vertical most of the time
