Tram Terra is first of all an infrastructure project, which aims to enhance the urban value of the northern area of Brussels and its relationship with the Canal, Tour et Taxis, Parc Max-sur-Zenne and Place Bolivare, creating a veritable network of greenery that will metamorphose the region. The connection will offer multiple added values to the city: a high-frequency public transport, a pedestrian walk, a quality bicycle path, a green corridor linking the various parks, a rainwater harvesting strip, cool islands and emblematic Brussels landmarks reinforced by landmark stops. The project aims to reintegrate nature into the city to guarantee a pleasant living environment and respond to tomorrow’s climate challenges. For this project we were asked to work on two very différents sites : Bolivard boulevard and the Belgica station.

Bolivar boulevard , formerly a wide roadway forming a barrier in the neighborhood, will become a space of connection and encounter in the future, thanks to the continuity of its treatments and the creation of specific spaces. The decarbonized axis will become an island of biodiversity. Demineralization, water management, fauna and flora will provide a new natural space, creating a valley within the city.

Today, the area around Belgica station is perceived as a crossroads of mobility, where cars occupy a maximum of space, coupled with a public transport interface where people don’t linger. By integrating the new streetcar terminus and upgrading the tram/ bus stop, the project will transform this area into an inclusive and attractive place in the form of a double square: a green square to the west and an inhabited bridge-square to the east.

The Orme House project consist of the renovation of a typical Brussels single-family house located in the municipality of Etterbeek in Brussels. I worked on this project from its conception until the end of its construction. The renovation involved refurbishing the entire house by replacing all finishes, electrical and plumbing systems, and making some structural improvements to make the house more comfortable and meet the client’s needs. The project also aimed to significantly improve the house’s energy performance (PEB) by replacing the exterior joinery and fully insulating the rear facade. Outdoor spaces were also renovated, and a terrace was added on the first floor.

First, it was necessary to design the project according to the client’s wishes and budget. Once the project and its budget were finalized, the application for an urban planning permit had to be prepared, including all graphic and administrative documents.

Simultaneously, I created a specifications document to list all the different stages of the construction and their implementation.

The next step was to find a general contractor to take care of the works. After several requests for quotations and negotiations, the clients were able to sign an agreement with a contractor. Meanwhile, the urban planning permit was approved, and the construction site could begin.

During the construction period, I was charged to supervise it. Meetings were organized every week, and I had to write report for each of them. At the same time, I had to draw all the construction details and also the bathrooms and furnitures details. I was also responsible for coordinating with other trades if necessary (carpenter, kitchen specialiste,..).

The end of the construction is concluded with a final inspection, preceded by a provisional inspection. This project was completed in May 2022.

The project involves the renovation and extension of a single-family house built in 1949 in the municipality of Uccle in Brussels. While the overall structure of the building is well constructed and in decent condition, the rooms are small, and the dwelling is relatively compact. The objective is to adapt this characteristic 1950s construction to modern lifestyles. Moreover, special emphasis will be placed on making the house as energy-efficient as possible, in accordance with the current Performance of Buildings standards.

The project envisions extending the garden level and the first floor. The proposed architecture aims for minimalism, emphasizing the created interior spaces. Inside, a double-height space will provide openness and create a visual connection between the garden level and the first floor.

The plan proposes adding a two-sided roof that harmonizes with the surrounding houses and maintains the same architectural style. The roof will feature two dormer windows, one on the front facade facing the street, and another on the rear facade. Traditional, noble, and soft materials (such as wood and naturally tinted zinc) have been chosen for these dormer windows.

The current exterior windows on the street-facing facade do not comply with standards. The plan is to replace the existing division with a division that respects the facade’s aesthetics while modernizing it and allowing for significant additional natural light. Regarding the house’s energy performance, apart from replacing the windows, the front facade will be insulated. A geothermal system (drilling) will be installed in front of the house to strive for the most ecological and energy-efficient project possible. Below, you’ll first find the plans of the existing situation, then those of the urban permit.

During this 4-month term, the urban planning workshop focused on Ostend. Indeed, this city is one of the most touristic of the Belgian coast and this mass tourism has a strong impact on the urban fabric. After analysing the situation, we realized that two strong dynamics are opposed within Ostend. First, the coast, very touristic with its high buildings along the dike, most of which are shops on the ground floor and apartments above. This part of the city is mainly occupied by wealthy people and many tourists, especially in summer. We observe an inflatable city phenomenon, which means that its population can triple at certain times of the year. This poses a problem in the management of the urban fabric of Ostend. On the other hand, the centre of Ostend is rather occupied by locals, whose standard of living is much lower and the population quite aging.

The project aims to revitalize the centre, which is quite cut off from the dike and its dynamics. Two sites were chosen, after an in-depth analysis of the urban fabric. First, a large strategically located car park will be transformed into a sports ground and playground for children. At the edge of it, there will be a building with a revitalization space, especially for the elderly and a cafeteria on the ground floor and social housing upstairs.

The second strategic location, further south of the city and on the edge of the dike, will also host a mixed program. On the ground floor and on the first floor there will be a cultural centre with an auditorium, a library and a cafeteria. The upper floors will also accommodate social housing.

The building is therefore located at the end of this large area. So this programme welcomes physiotherapists, but also sports lessons, dance classes, swimming lessons... This place is intended to be intergenerational while still targeting an aging population. The cafeteria is cut by a diagonal to provide public space on its ground floor. The facade overlooking the square is very glazed to allow a large connection with the public space. On the upper floors, two housing towers rest on the building opening on a courtyard in the middle that can accommodate all kinds of events for the inhabitants. The units are crossing, and all have a terrace, with 3 typologies. The wish here is to create spaces that bring people together and link communities.

For the second site, one of the main aims is to appeal to the public space by releasing the auditorium. The ground floor is a large space accommodating the entrance to the auditorium, part of the cafeteria and the library. Entrances to the apartments on the upper floors are on the side to maximize privacy. The cafeteria can extend into the outdoor area, which is converted into a public square that can accommodate various events. On the first floor, part of the cafeteria and the library are located around a high courtyard overlooking the dike and the sea. It can be converted and can therefore be used as a terrace. The housing towers follow this volume and thus offer interesting views of the city and the sea.
