JULIE ZOE KJERNES PORTFOLIO
PROFILE
I have a keen interest in research and product development. I take pride in following a simple philosophy of designing products that are: clean in form, understandable and easy to use. Having gained industry experience from her work at Mathmos Ltd, Samsung and Marks & Spencer PLC, I have the knowledge to undertake research and innovative design with confidence. I got selected to be the Creative Director for Ravensbourne’ prestigious end of year Degree Shows due to my excellent people and leadership skills. I am keen to gain as much industry experience as possible, and I am a very fast learner.

USER RESEARCH CARRIED OUT FOR A MAJOR ELECTRONICS COMPANY.
RESE ARCH
Being recruited to carry out an extensive project for a major corporate electronics company, I got trained to go in-depth qualitative research, user experience and teamwork. I carried out a mass of ethnographic and interviewing research, and met very engaging people. The team worked mostly via brainstorming meetings and in corporate headquarters in London. The team was pitching to client throughout the process.

PROCESS Above is the process of research
END DOCUMENT Above is a sneak peak of the research gathered
The project involved engaging users in washing and food environments through ethnograhpy. These insights were informed by probes, interviews, scenario mapping and visual surveys. The gathered material informed future scenarios of interest for the client.
THE BOOKS Two of the books delivered. Illustrations representing the probes not allowed to be shown.
INSIGHT Above is an example of one of the insights gained, where a woman in her 40s hoovers her fridge due to dog hair.
INSIGHT Observation where different people have their favourite tools in the kitchen.
‘U-RULER’: RECYCLABLE INSULIN INJECTOR, A CHALLENGE IN 3D MODELLING AND ENGINEERING.

I need something that looks different, is easy to use and that I can recycle if needed... Hege - Diabetes type1
‘In England GP surgeries and pharmacists are not duty bound by the law to collect sharp bins from people with diabetes. This leaves 2.8 million people with diabetes in the UK with the only option of throwing their medicine in the bin’. (www.diabetes.co.uk)
The insulin has an expiry date of two years and that fills up a fridge. Makes me feel sicker with the medicine label and look. Hege - Diabetes type1
“Why does it look like a pen?...No one ever wears it in their pockets for convenience” Christine Diabetes type 1

easily count the required units. On the inside the sound of the handles moving up the teeth will give an audio feedback on dosage.
STEP 3 Lid off
STEP 4 The needle-shield retracts itself when injecting and returns to cover the needle to prevent injury and
contamination. Once the user has selected the correct dosage the insulin is administered by pushing down on the lid.

THE U-RULER Even though the injector is intended for refill, it is designed for disassembling so you can easy change the
insulin capsule or dispose of the injector through your normal plastic recycling.

OCD -’FIRST CLASS TRAVEL’ A film produced, designed and scripted by Julie Zoe.
END DOCUMENT Above is a sneak peak of the research gathered
- afraid of bacteria
- do not lean towards seats
- do not touch poles - afraid of grease marks
- afraid of faeces on seat
- compulsive cleaning
- everything has to match - do not touch anything - stand in the same place
A collation of all the overlapping habits taken from the probe sheets.
THOMAS When collating all the habits from my probes together, they formed a character that has OCD. Therefore my brief became a design for a fictitious person.
SKETCHES Here are the sketches of the final product produced to show the manufacturer’s the idea.
PROTOTYPING / STORYBOARD / FILMING CREW Snap shot of mock up reference models, the final storyboard for my short film.
THE FILM The final film concentrates on the character with OCD, and how he expresses this through his products.
THE FILM Screen shots of ‘Thomas’ using leather-loop, Glass-rest and Seating-mat.
Julie has brought a confidence and flair to the design process by bringing to life her creative vision for Ravensbourne2011 with an infectious enthusiasm. She has presented to senior staff, articulating the vision effectively and managed a complex range of demands to a high standard. C R EAT IV E D IRECTOR
The creative director is charged with determining the best ways for us to visually represent our college identity throughout the entire event. It’s very much a people-oriented job, involving development of high-level concepts for design projects but also connecting students that are in need of help to realise their installation ambitions. It involves working with internal and external industry, not just from my department (design) but media and broadcasting, pitching designs, and understanding industries expectations and wants in future employees. At times, the show require you to develop visual designs, and at other times, the Creative Director will be responsible for recruiting and managing third party design processes and installations as well as internal design resources.
