“Life's inherent creativity, its dynamic vitality, is brought to the surface only thru the strenuous exertions of a life of consistent action” – Daisaku Ikeda

STEPS 4

Black and white architectural photography. When people navigate through a building they experience space and boundaries. Depending on the person’s vantage point, the shapes they see may vary. Interestingly, buildings shape the negative space intentionally or unintentionally.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 9

This composition’s objective was to create something that would be able to fold and unfold vertically. Containing 5 stories, the tower had be able to stand. The transparent walls not only hold the tower up vertically, but also allows the tower to be seen through. Also, the images represent parts of the building in comparison to the human body ambiguously. For this photo project, the double exposure technique was used to show a person smaller than an object. Lastly, all the photos were taken from parts the buildings on campus that are recognizable by student and staff members.

The objective of this project was to make the space inside of the 3inch cube apparent. The design was based on the research done on the architectural practices by Rudolph Schindler and Richard Neutra that had emphasis on space. According to the research, space can be made more present by using transparent walls, light, extended-out roof and floor, and varying ceiling heights. Finally, the concept statement of this composition is “Space and light flow through unbordered space.”

The objective of this project is to design a building along with the shadows that we do not see. This is to incorporate the non-visible details into the design, which in this case is the shadow triangle. For this composition, I selected 3 different angles of this shadow triangle that range from 45 degrees or less to shape our building. In order to visualize the complete shade for each angle, I considered the triangles to be solid shapes. Lastly, slicing the solid shadow triangle into thin layers creates an effect of motion. In this way, the building actually interacts more with the movement of the sun than we perceive.

SHADOWS

The objective of this project was to design an area to fill up the open lot on Pierce College’s Campus based on student needs. In this case, shade is scarce in necessary places to eat, sit, rest, and study. In order to fulfill these necessities, the concept of dugouts were used. These are affordable projects that are in consideration of campus budgets. Also, it is environmentally friendly. These dugouts are made underneath the grass field, which does not interfere with the grass field usage. Not only will this be used in college campuses but also in local public parks where students can study in the open space that would be conveniently near their homes.

DUGOUTS 18

The objective of this project is to design a bus stop that is combined with the goals of public art. Public artists or the youth of the community can represent their local communities by creating not only sculptures but enhancing the designs of bus stops. The artists can personalize their surrounding space with representations of their culture. Also, this could start a movement that brings the art museums to the streets that make their attractions local. Ultimately, this will contribute renewed energy to their communities.

ENERGY

The objective of this project is to represent an act that encourages peace into communities. In human relationships, heart-to-heart dialogues can enrich the connection between people. In order to demonstrate that concept, I designed a bridge that connects from one’s heart to another. In a way that a sculpture conveys a message, this concept is demonstrated by the actual use of the bridge. For example, people crossing this bridge are transferring through each person’s heart, resembling shared compassion toward another. This bridge connects two neighboring communities that are divided by the freeway. Also, in order to make this even more personal with opportunities of community interaction, this bridge does not allow cars to drive for pedestrian-safety reasons. As a result, people will have opportunities to walk together comfortably at ease in their home environments with grand views from above the freeway.

LUCKY 7 CLASS OF ‘11

The objective of this project was to come up with a sweatshirt design that represents my undergraduate class. Our theme is “Lucky 7, Class of ‘11”, in other words, the 7th class of Soka University of America, and the graduating class of 2011. The design was originally inspired by the 7-Eleven concept and was transformed into a 3D logo with a modern style design. This logo design was selected by the majority of my classmates out of a few other designs. This logo was worn all throughout senior year and will always resemble our class.

“DO YOUR BEST!”

t a c e r a b n a #G

This project’s objective is to encourage hope to those struggling in society. I decided to use an image of a kitten climbing to the top to signify an act of perseverance. This logo was created to encourage people to continue pursuing their goals and dreams. Also, this kitten represents an individual’s struggle. I called it, “Ganbarecat”. Ganbare in Japanese means to cheer someone on saying, “do your best” or “you can do it!” In order to encourage the local communities, the image may be posted anywhere from car windows to buildings. This is not an advertisement to sell products but to promote hope with an image that represents courage to persevere. In addition, this simple idea can be embedded into people’s minds facilitating the flow of critical thought and creativity towards their own success. Lastly, in order to help one another we must share, and this is one of the ways I can contribute creativity continuously.
