Toolset For Creative Women
In the current market place, there are no tools specifically designed for women. Soloset tools, through carefully refined curvilinear designs, evoke femininity.
Overview
Project Brief
Goal : Find a product that is typically ignored by people and try to redesign this product, and foster an emotional connection to it.
Findings....
People care more about the protection of their laptop, and less about the overall look of the bag.
Every household has tools. It’s a “need” product. People don’t care about the tools unless they need them.
Photo albums used to be very important things for families, but these days people are using hard-drives to replace the photo album.
Problem : Tools are a “must have product but people pay less attention to the tools. Tools have long life cycle but designs tends to hide them away.
Solution : Design a tools set that will create emotional connection with design and creating value of the tools.

“Ello” is an educational device that teaches “tweens” to manage money
Objective
Project Brief
Project brief: New ways of working, design a product that can provide better working situation.
Which direction? Cooking Device
Money Management Device

Most of time I experience with ingredients. When I cook at home I tend to shop all the ingredients instead of try to cook with ingredients in the fridge. Sometimes I feel like it’s waste of food when it doesn’t taste good but it’s part of my experience.
I only work two days, Friday and Saturday at my parent’s restaurant. And that’s how I get my allowance. My parents ask me to get bank account because it’s easy to manage but I like seeing my envelope getting bigger.
I check the internet news everyday, because of access to internet I rarely read news paper. I e-mail to my grand child since they are outside of state. Other than checking e-mail and reading news paper it’s hard to follow the systems.
Money Manage Device
Problem : As we become more of a consumer society, the issue of money management is becoming prevalent. The ability to handle one’s own finance is becoming a new necessary skill.
Objective
Project Brief
Goal : New ways of teaching money management to children ages 7-9. Design a product that will help foster responsible money management and spending.

It’s hard to go shopping especially when there’s toy store around. My two kids will grab things they want and tear out until we buy the things they want. Sometime it’s hard to explain about how money works since they think all the adult has money to buy everything.
There are so many things that I want to buy. Often time, my parents say no to things that I want and since I don’t have money I just have to listen to my parents. I try to save money when my mom gives me dollar but it’s not enough for things that I want to buy.
Money Management Device
Found : The skill of “money management” for the “tween” generation is not considered a primary issue despite our prevailing consumer culture. There is a lack of educational tools. Solution : Designing a device for “tween” to assist in teaching the management of money.
Tween Research
Tween Culture Research
Finding problems- what’s missing?
Tween Culture
Why Tween girls? Tween girls are more interested in shopping than tween boys. Age 7-9, kids know basic math so they know what they can buy with the amount that they have. At this age, tween girls want many things since they’ve become interested in things related to aesthetics. At the same time, they don’t have money to buy things they want.
Giving allowance is a good way to teach kids how to manage money.
Teaching the value of money is crucial to many parents but even more so to children. Many children do not understand the concept of money management. When those same kids hit early adult years, they are lost. Giving your child an allowance is a good way to teach them how to manage money. Teaching money management to kids is an essential component of daily life to assure that your child is ready for the financial world that they will soon face.

However, Faith who had extra money believed that she had the ability with buy more products with the extra money she had Found: Kids at that age know how much they have and what they can buy with amount they have.

Summary: Most tween girls came with their parents. Tween girls had toys that were interested in buying, however, their parents prevented them from purchasing further products.
Found: Kids have money with them but most of time they still need permission from their parents regarding their purchases.

New Piggy Bank for kids
Etikit is kid’s tableware that teaches kids basic table manners so families can enjoy their meal time together.
Approach
Project Brief
Goal : Design tableware that can fulfill an unmeet need.
There are kids who don’t behave, so it’s hard for families to eat together without mom or dad’s food getting cold. Kids get distracted easily especially during mealtimes. It’s important for kids to learn how to behave during mealtime.
Because you don’t want them to be like this...
How do you teach your kids to be polite and well behaved at the dinner table? Do you have to sit with them and teach them every steps? Or Do you let them do whatever they want?
Research
Observation on kid’s behavior
Finding problems What Parent Say: -Troy gets bored while eating his meal, he always plays with his food -He gets messy after finishing the his meal -He gets no bowl or plate because he usually drops them -His parents need to watch him while he is eating
Troy 1 1/2 years old Not a big eater Would rather play with his food than eat it.
What Troy Does: -He can use his spoon and fork but he likes using his hand because he can play with his food. -He likes to play with anything that’s on the tray -It is easier for him to use his hand rather than a fork to eat. -Troy likes to play with his food, his cup, and his fork rather than using them to eat.
Family eats together, however either mom or dad needs to take care of the kid first.
What Parent Say: -Cole gets bored while eating food -They want Cole to think that eating is more a learning game, or something that challenges him. -Bought him a set of tableware with characters he likes, but after 2-3 meals he doesn’t really care about it anymore.
Cole 4 years old Not a big eater Needs help finishing his meal
What Cole Does: -Cole brings a toy to the table -Cole gets bored while eating his food which he doesn’t like, so he starts to play with peas on the table. -He has a wide open cup he uses, but his parents place it away from his arm.
Research
Observation on kid’s behavior
Finding problems Kids Klub (Camera was not allowed)
Preschool kids: 3-5 years old Dinner Time 14 kids sit on the bench table with their friends. Each kid get their own tray, plate, cup and fork.
Kid’s behaviors: -Very loud since they sat with their friends together. -They follow their teachr’s rules. -Kids wait for their teacher to serve the food or things they need. -Since their chairs don’t have back support, kids tend to move around a lot and end up spilling water or dropping utensils on the food. -They use their hands to eat food and kids use their clothes to wipe their hands or mouths. -Each kid throw away their own plate and cups.
Teachers: -They don’t eat together, they watch kids and they provide for the kids’ needs. -After kids are done eating, the teacher cleans the table (wiping the table or picking up the food)
Table wares: -Paper plates, cups and plastic forks (one time use)
Findings... Engaging kids at mealtime can be a challenge. Either mom, dad or an adult need to be there to finish their meal. It’s hard for families to go to a nice restaurant for a pleasant dinner. Starting from age 2 up, kids like to follow what their parents are doing. Kids “wannabe like adults.”
Design Criteria Design kid’s tableware that can teach basic table manners. Design needs to be similar to the adult’s so that they feel like they are one of them, yet with colors to give sense of a playful feeling. Design needs to be formal and not too playful so that kid won’t think that meal time is play time.
