“Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness . . . “ - Zaha

As an aspiring architect, I find this Hadid quote both heartening and insightful, “Architecture should... yearn for timelessness.” This quote enriches my understanding of the practice of architecture, and it grounds me with humility. Architecture is not solely the creation of large physical structures, it is the creation of space in itself, and how that space, that creation, uplifts the surrounding community.

A building itself may not possess emotions or feelings, but it has the power to inspire and stir emotions through its beauty, the way it responds to its environment and the purpose of its functionality.

It stands as a resemblances of its time while also shaping people's experience and influencing one's wellness. This quote fuels my drive to reach my future goals, motivating me to imbue my designs with clarity of purpose to benefit my local community. My ultimate aspiration is to create something that transcends time, leaving a lasting legacy

For this assignment, we were tasked with creating a residential unit under a series of designated floor plates that offer challenges in an organized manner that incorporates principles of efficiency, aesthetics , and user comfort. The main focus during this exercise was to deliver a space that prioritizes functionality, practicality, and aesthetics while keeping good organization. This exercise was completed with thorough research and the working knowledge and the understanding of how to space out common furnishings and/or belongings within a residential space.

THERAPY GARDEN

Fall 2022 - BSD ARCH STUDIO 03

SITE LOCATION / ASOKWA, GHANA

This children’s hospital was in desperate need of a playful and therapeutic garden as a welcoming safe space for the patients with compromised immune systems. Utilizing this space as a place to play and enhance the ability to create their own adventures with understanding that they are still just children and not just sick. This project features arch-shaped shade structures made from local supply of bamboo creating a framework holding up thatch roofing as a method of shading. Our team made sure to have a design that incorporates elements of water, sound, and sandpits to provide sensory stimulation and play opportunities for the children and coming and going guests. Our garden includes a diverse range of local vegetation with a home grown vegetable garden all included to enhance the natural environment creating a soothing atmosphere.

The most important part of the design aspect was to create a safe space for the young patients whose immune systems were compromised leaving them little room to explore and play outside. By creating a rammed earth cir cular like wall, which acts as a barrier that isolates a sand pit with vegetation, views of the rest of the garden as well as a climbable shade space made from thatch and bamboo for the kids to explore and express their inner child.

This is a layout for the open cafeteria shielded by the same bamboo framing, covered by thatch roofing for the provided shade. It also shows the location of the bathroom in the top left corner as well as a rammed earth garden wall which hosts a variety of home grown foods such as tomatoes, greens, etc..

Created space showcasing the staff building in cluding two classrooms, three main offices that overlook the garden, as well as bathrooms and a conference room

This exercise task we were ‘provided’ with a specific column to thoroughly study and document from a famous architect. The column that was assigned to me was Lina Bo Bardi’s ‘Helicoidal Wooden Staircase’ located in a museum in Brazil.

The objective is to showcase the column as a multifaceted object, meaning through the process of performing a series of iterations to the column to investigate how the column can be expressed as something architectural rather than just a column holding up a structure. This encourages a more abstract methodology of thinking and demonstrating my proficiency in architecture.

The structure was created in a xeriscape inspired desert landscape made from concrete, steel and colored glass to enhance the essence of play that overlooks the city.

BOTH FLOORS

I was inspired to create a red square window with a broken concrete exposed lining just outside edges of the window. I did this because of Lina Bo Bardis use of the color red in her brutalist style of architecture. I felt it was inportant to keep the same tone and style as when it was created.

This exercise was all about developing a critical concept of what a contemporary library has the potential to be. Through research and case studies, students must analyze cultivating a discerning perspective on the expectations of a modern day library. Students were asked to scrutinize, conceptualize, model and bring to life a public facility that caters to the communities needs. The objective of the project is to initiate the visualization of a sophisticated understanding of the public library’s changing role in society and its progression over the years.

The way that I made this library is by adapting spaces that serve as a community hub, enriching the lives of its users by including great open views of Tempe Town Lake. Titan library encompasses a vast space that prioritizes both communal interaction and individual solitude. With all around access to natural light, a seamlessly integrated outdoor patio that connects the interior space to the courtyard, access to individual study rooms, group study rooms, classrooms as well as an arts and crafts room. For those who require more peace and quiet, there’s the quiet room with minimal distractions and a place to get work done.

Home is where the heart is. The initial concept of this project was to create an environment that could facilitate a welcoming and amiable location for both employees and clients. The design would incorporate warm colors, soft lighting accompanied by comfortable furniture to create that cozy space. In an effort to adapt the concept to the site, our idea was to fashion a xeriscape-like environment which could promote a journey through the stimulation of the vegetation whilst getting an individual to where they intended accordingly. Currently, the building that stands does not appropriately accommodate those who occupy the locality nor does it serve its principal purpose in a superlative manner. The ultimate goal of the project was to design a hospitable building that would nurture a sense of community and belonging for the homeless and further aid a positive influence throughout their lives.
