A NEW FUN LOOK FOR RAMEN

A typeface by Jullianna Eckardt

SO WHAT’S ALL THIS RAMEN ABOUT?? Soba Sans Bold was designed for a new look at ramen noodle packaging. Created to look fun, legible, and made for the new age of ramen consumers. Plus, it’s a pretty quality meal.

Based from Japanese Kanji, Soba takes its serif top and bottom form from the way the brush strokes start then end. This makes the forms of the type feel hand lettered. Here you see featrues of the very fun little serif detail at the top, left, and bottom right areas of the letterforms!

BEFORE Soba’s first draft of type was less structured in weight and went along the lines of being considered a serif.

AFTER After fine tuning the weight and rules on how the serif ends were structured, Soba Sans Bold turned into a strong and structured sans serif type.

Check that out! It’s Soba’s little serif quality! By keeping the the hand stroked qualities of Kanji, Soba is able to feel organic in it’s form while remaining structured.

Not only can Soba structure well as a legible typeface, but it can also be used to illustrate with!
