To be successful, an open relationship must consist of open communication, honesty, trust and boundaries. It is important throughout the relationship that the partners have continued mutual alignment of their relationship needs and wants.
• Power dynamics can get complicated, especially if one person feels slighted.
• Open relationships often are judged by others. Don’t let the opinion of others affect what works for you.
• If you think adding a third person to your relationship will fix the problems you are having, this is not a wise decision. It only will create more problems. Is an open relationship right for you?
The challenges of an open relationship include the following:
• You have healthy coping skills and can deal with jealousy in a healthy manner.
• You are open to establishing specific boundaries and adhering to them.
In an consensual open relationship, a couple decides to date other people in a consensual non-monogamy relationship, or a threesome, where a third partner is invited in just for sex. Some do polyamory and others do monogamish. A throuple is different from an open relationship or a threesome. Polyamory can be more people involved.

When I was a young adult, my parents got divorced. My mom stayed in Metro-Detroit but my dad moved up north, near Traverse City. That meant that I usually spent my summers up north with my dad and had to make a whole different set of friends during the summers I stayed out there. One summer, when I was about 18 or 19, my upnorth friend and I were riding our bikes through a trail in the woods. We found a spot kind of secluded off from the trails and made a fort. All summer we would just hang out there, smoke cigarettes, sneak a beer, and just hang out. At the end of that summer though on my last night before heading home we decided we would spend the night in our make-shift fort (we covered it with a tarp, so we stayed dry). On this last summer night we were doing our usual teenager stuff, smoking, playing games, talking about girls. That’s when my buddy pulled out a dirty magazine from his backpack.Wespent some time flipping through the pages when I noticed he was pitching a tent of his own under our fort. Without thinking or asking, I just reached over and grabbed him. I was half expecting him to smack me away, but he reached over and grabbed me, too. One thing led to another and we ended up having a night to remember.Sadly,we grew apart after a few years and went our separate ways. But that was for sure an end of summer night I’ll never forget.
