Tackling Domestic Violence

How Architcture can Protect + Heal Victims of Abuse

Final Year Project - 2022 - Camden

As for my final project for the part 1 BA Hons Architecture course I wanted to investigate a new typology to an issue that is in the town of Camden. Camden was the town given for research and investigate possible issues in terms of emerging technologies, sustainable communities and social justice, with this being the brief I had chosen to go with social justice and investigate the possibilities of issues that are related to this topic.

There were two main issues that were outstanding and highlighted on the Camden website was the high rise of cases in domestic violence and shelter for refugees, investigating into both of them I had chosen to focus on domestic violence cases and the following pages showing my thinking of new forms of living for an domestic violence victim.

Services to the building are inserted 3 lifts are added to the structure as this would connect each floor but also stairs are placed on each floor. 5 set of stairs are placed to recognise the survivors journey route.

Circulation of the building, the structure consists of 7 floors and resolves the issues on lack shelters in Camden.

Secound floor is resolved by having a floor dedicating to the vics this also consist of pods and intimate spaces.

Third floor is resloved this is where the oudoor stairs are placed which leads to intimate coutyard and spaces for children to play.

Sixth floor is resloved this is where the oudoor stairs are placed which leads to intimate coutyard and spaces for children to play.

Seventh floor is resloved this is where the oudoor stairs are placed which leads to intimate coutyard and spaces for children to play.

Boxpod Eco-Hotel/Hostel

Second Year Project - 2021 - Holmsfirth

This project is located in Holmfirth a small town that is need of 21st century investment an this new eco hotel could be a massive boost in footfall for the local community. The small-town lacks infrastructure to many other towns in West Yorkshire, this new eco hotel would benefit the area in many ways, one is which it must be eco-friendly, this is because due to climate change everything needs to be design in a sustainable way so that measures could be in place to enhance Britain problems on climate change.

These eco pods have been design by using shipping contains and then been flipped into a pod for tourists. Also Holmfirth as a town is changing it has been outdated and the homes in the area need to be emerged with new technology this project could be a boost for these home owners to change and adapt to new method of living sustainably.

As part of the Area Action Plan (AAP), part of Birmingham’s Local Development Framework (LDF) and acts as a basis for determining planning applications and bringing forward regeneration in the AAP area The aim of the plan is to provide a clear plan for regeneration and development in the Aston, Newtown and Lozells area over a 14-year period (2012-2026.) with a comprehensive and co-ordinated attempt to shaping housing, employment, local centres, community facilities, infrastructure, transport, and the environment.

Viability of a mixed-use development consisting of residential scheme consisting of apartments and housing and two retail units which is an opportunity to provide employment. The input of myself was to create pre-application as this was my first project at the firm I was mentored and guided by David Weeks and create a 110 page document for Birmingham City Council to review.

Land at Middleton Road

C&S Architects & Developments - 2023 - Birmingham

The proposed building has been adjusted to the special town space character; guidance given by Walsall council. The guidance looks at keeping the area and landscape to not look out of touch and maintain its 19th/20th century character.

The proposed building allows this as it is not extravagant but rather subtle with exposed timber framing and large bay windows. As seen in the elevation the proposed seems to blend in with the landscape and updates Middleton Road to what it is today.

The proposal is for the development of a five-bedroom property, with generous living spaces. The design of the new dwelling is in keeping with the local architectural vernacular but has all the conveniences for modern living. The design takes into consideration the comments of the planners and is amended to reflect the scale and mass of the existing 2 storey properties.

Proposed First Floor

Reformed Church, Halesowen

C&S Architects & Developments - 2022/2023 - Birmingham

The Halesowen Action Plan is part of a wider plan, the Black Country Core Strategy which in conjunction with the Halesowen Area Action plan forms part of Dudley Council’s Local Development Framework. Some of the objective for Halesowen Town Centre land use is to provide shopping facilities, employment, housing, leisure, entertainment, culture, and tourism.

The plan also has an historical aspect and the site falls within the area designated as Area of High Historic Townscape.
