Cittaslow Gaochun [Landscape Architecture] [Under Construction] [Role: Project Manager & Designer] Time: 2012.04 Location: Gaochun, Nanjing

This Project is a landscape design for Cittaslow Gaochun, which is the frist cittaslow project in China. BAU architecture team finished design of buildings then landscape archtiects take over. Cittaslow is a movement founded in Italy in October 1999. The inspiration of Cittaslow was the Slow Food organization. Cittaslow's goals include improving the quality of life in towns by slowing down its overall pace, especially in a city's use of spaces and the flow of life and traffic through them. Cittaslow towns describe themselves as unique, vibrant and prosperous. There’s an art to improving the quality of life in a town; a way in which the community comes together for the cvommon good that generates a passion felt by residents and visitors alike. The goals are a holistic approach that strengthens communities and creates a better daily life.

Landscape Network Blue and Green have their own character. Blue is serene caused elegant and pure, green and full of enthusiasm, a symbol of life. In nature, the blue symbolizes the sky and water, green is the dense vegetation. By combining different spatial strategies in the blue network and the green network, we get a combination called "The blue & green network". This combined network is committed to maximize the naturally through every venue, while providing different types of green space experience.

To promote the co-ordinated development of the urban and rural areas, to realize the equalization of basic public service between urban and rural areas, to establish a properly laid-out, well-equipped, well-functioning, and convenient basic public service facility system, Nanjing Planning Bureau issued this paper, to guide the reconstruction of new towns. The meeting of Gaochun Municipal Party Commitee and Municipal Government about reinforcing the scientific design idea. The guideline of Yaxi Town is about: to establish an international slow lifestyle brand, to accelerate the building of the open space( slow city and slow transportation systems), low-carbon industries( agri-tourism, recreational tourism ), and the complex ecological system( green corridors and clean waters), so that we can build a town leading in the champion of slow lifestyles. Yaxi is unique as it is within the new Gaochun Cittaslow, an official member of the Cittaslow association. The Cittaslow association is a not for profit entity and its objectives are to promote and spread culture of good living through research, testing and application of solutions. Slowcity seeks an alternative future to that which globalisation and consumerism is bringing. It seeks the specifically local as opposed to the generic. Yaxizhen must develop it's tourism potential to benefit from its unique location and to contribute to the larger Citta Slow district

Exisitng Yaxi

Small Down Block Size

By analysis existing situation, we can easily understand that Yakshi is a simple town with one core and two main roads as axises. It's structure makes the core gonna crowd and will not suit for population growing.

Modern cities are flexible organisms which have to serve a huge variety of requirements, as the expectations of the users are rising. A refined road grid which serves all users of the city is essential for a successfull development in the future. Contemporary chinese cities, as well as modernist cities from the last century, which were planned strictly for cars, have proven to fail to develop a successfull city environment and struggle to survive. Therefore we provide Yaxi with a finer road grid, by splitting up the problematic oversized blocks.

New Town Plan

Focal Point Optimisation 1, Add more by-passes, emphasize the small scale of the new town. 2, Add facilities and improve the service function of the town. 3, Construct the lakeside commercial space and improve the land use. 4, Construct the green network and build a rich green space.

Yaxi has a great landscape foundation, but not enough public green space and ecological quality. We made re-use of regional ecological corridor, then design sub-reginal corridosr to connect to a local landscape basement, the result is creat a vivide green netwrok for residents and nature.

Proposed New Built Form

We design new urban space, reserve and further develop the urban fabric of Yaxi to improve the urban open space and residential space, so that we can build a livable townin Gaochun.

A NEW DEVELOPMENT WAVE FOR QIDONG [ Design Proposals for a Small Chinese Town ] [Design Thesis of Master Degree] Location: Qidong, Hunan, China Tutor: Prof. Bruno De Meulder Time: 2007.3 - 2007.06

Qidong, the focus of the thesis, is a small inland town in the county of Hunan, China. It was established in 1952 and is under the administration of Hengyang city. The downtown Qidong area is approximately 11 sq. km, with 130,000 inhabitants. It is a typical small town established by P. R. China, with various fully arranged basic infrastructures, including small industrial functions such as a cement factory, a cigarette factory and a chemical factory. This typical inland town did not have an urban revolution like Shenzhen. Although urbanization in Shenzhen began later than in Qidong, it is now Qidong’s biggest migration target. But Qidong still continues its development, a 14 sq.km new town was planned in 2000 for the southwest of the old town, and the construction started in 2006. When all the attention has been put in the new town, the left old town has been left waiting for its next move.

New Town YOUNG OLD/CHILDREN VILLAGE

With the increased demand for housing with more immigrants from the countryside, Qidong has planned a 14 km2 new town next to the old one. The new town will try to attract the population by having all the necessary facilities and substantial residential housing. With the construction of the new town, the old town may have ever more vacancies, in addition to immigration from the countryside. This context sets a question that how could we design the next urban transform in the old town to take precautions against the possible dying of the old town.

A Layered Town

There appears to be no evident connection between the various infrastructures studied (urban villages, work units and high school campuses) in either their development or operation. Rather, they deliver the town into a layered structure from north to south. Campuses inhibit a relation between town center and nature, and the railway tracks break up the town into two parts. The work units together form a city center but only extend in one direction. The urban villages are dispersed but are isolated, falling out of the town’s urban grid structure.

The Blue & Green System The concept of the blue and green system shows an interleaved network of green and water spaces. In the town level, the new park, which occupies former railway road, affords new public space to citizens with centrality. In addition, informed green and water paths reach into community, provide a neighborhoods level green space.

Water Distribution For Agriculture Qidong’s water presented as water pool to give service to agriculture fields in 1950s.

The existing water and public green spaces distribute There are not many water and public green spaces in the old town, also it is hard to find a relationship between them.

The surface water flows by GIS Analysis Water fall down from the mountain in to the city during the rain season, but water just run on the surface through the city without a effective using way.
