SHADOW TANGO SCHOOL STUDIO|THEATER DESIGN|2013

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Type: Theater Key word: light, shadow, pile Location: Los Angeles Area: 7605m2 Role: Conception, Design, 3d modeling, 2d graphic Cooperator: Yan Chen

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Instructor: Marcelo Spina The studio project is located at the edge of Downtown Los Angeles. Circumscribed by the Hollywood Freeway, Temple Street and Grand Avenue, the site has the potential to complete and consolidate a an important corner piece of downtown. The raw geometry generated from "pile" has been carefully analyzed and developed in order to generate novel architectural forms and materiality using new technique. By researching Chiaroscuro, which is a set of painting techniques able to create contrast between the well-lit form and its dark background, we try to find the relationship between abstraction and figuration. The shadow pass through building from exterior to the interior by windows, which give interior a new frame pattern. Then the pattern pass through then interior wall to the center of theater and multifunction building as open and decoration.

City in the city SCHOOL STUDIO|PRESERVATION DESIGN|2014

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Type: City complex Key word: old factory, preservation, recreation, urban Area: 134,000m2 Role: Conception, Rendering, 3d modeling, 2d graphic Cooperator: Hanyuan Chang

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Instructor: Eric Owen Moss The building renewal project is located at the edge of city Barcelona. The site named Las Termicas, which used to be a thermal power plant serving the thermoelectric power for the city from 1976 to 2011. The three chimneys become well known. To preserve the old memory, chimneys are cut into three different ways and melt into new spaces. By looking through the clear glass inside from far away; by touching the old concrete when walking inside, old factory got new face to celebrate with citizens. The rock-shape hotel rooms hang between the glass box and one chimney. Including one city museum, one gallery, one office center, one hotel and several stores, it becomes an important riverside business area and recreation center for whole city. 05

 From the lower level to higher level, different shapes and height decides the function inside. The first 1-5 levels is communication center as a transfer station to distribute people to different zones and gives the whole building a safety and clear responsibity management. And a shopping mall and art stores in the lower level provides recreation place for residents. The upper level is divided to three zone connect to three chimney. A city museum provides a best place in Barcelona for family, especially children spends their weekend. An office center will rent to several hi-tech companies. The hotel and observation area on the top provide visitors a highest place in Barcelona to enjoy the city view and sea view. The idea to keep old chimney but cut to open connection with new spaces make the old factory a new and interesting place for work and stay.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Type: Multi-function Key word: module, connection, coding form Area: 225,000m2 Role: Conception, Coding, 2d graphic, detail design Cooperator: Lu Fan

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Instructor: Satoru Sugihara The studio project is to give a try to create a new-look tower by writing python coding in rhino. By rotating ellipses, the building get original shape. Instead of old vertical column structure with little relation of surface, the module connection code provides a rule to connect random dots on surface. The continued frame system divides surface naturally into smaller pieces. Then another module connection is used to subdivide the surface further. The connection system is not only on the surface, it extends to the center connecting with the main core of the tower to form the entire system. A conference center, a office center and a hotel is inside the tower. 09

READING BETWEEN LINE SCHOOL THESIS|PIER PARK DESIGN|2014

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Type: Pier park Key word: lines, figure, slabs, continuity Location: Santa Catalina Island Area: 6100m2 Role: Conception, Design, 3d modeling, 2d graphic Individual

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Instructor: Dwayne Olyer This thesis is an exploration of the perceptual effects of line based geometries and their associated volumetric affects. My intention is to build on several key principles as a way of shifting the reading of these figures toward richer, more abstract architectural elements in space. The project first examines a sectional condition of slabs (-a large scale version of the Maison Domino is used as a primitive). Taking into consideration the sequence of experience that leads up to and through the section, I have placed the figural elements within that space-a hand and a jumping person. Using the layered system from earlier studies, the same operations are used to shred the sectional slabs -creating both continuous linear elements, open pockets of space, and figural volumes that exist within the same space.

12

This project is on the same location as the famous green pier. By extending the old pier both to the city and sea side, the pier become a bigger recreation place for the citizen and visitors. The continued lines both on the floor and in between as a figure creates rich experience and functionally connect different levels. The pier as the end of city main street jump into the water. And the pier park become an icon for boats to coming for home. A new city center is bring into life. 13

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Type: Public, Educational Key word: Open, Rhythm, Tight Location: Dalian, China Area: 55,450m2 Role: Conception, Training Center Design

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Cooperator: Jane, Chen Shen, Jennifer, Jiang Long, Jian Junkai The Dalian Youth and Children’s Center is built on a hill-like landscape. Four futuristic gigantic buildings are sitting on the landscape. Plenty of interesting things are happening in each of the building. Also, there are large areas of water and grass at exterior. Exciting spaces are created for Children running around, exploring, and experiencing. The unique shaped masses shaped masses spread on the site, helps to break down the plain planning pattern generated by the massive housing area. All the buildings share the same language but slightly differentiated, the roofs are slopping towards the center of the plaza, which tights the loose site up.

The Dalian Youth and Children’s Center contains an Art Center, a Training Center, a Sports Center and an Experience Center. Each of them occupied one corner of the site. Art Center locates at the north-east corner over a water pool of large area, it contains a theatre, exhibition spaces and an amphitheater above water. The stretched Training Center is at the north-west corner to protect the site from the NW prevailing wind in winter. The Sports Center is at the south-west, accommodates a gymnasium, an indoor swimming pool, and can be directly accessed from the existing outdoor sports courts.

 There are 16,500 m² training spaces in the Training Center including close to 190 classrooms. It can hold around 5,000 young people at the same time. Therefore, safety issue has become the most important design concern of this project. Giving consideration of this, the building heights are limited to 3 floors. Podium level and roof garden/ playground are introduced, in case of emergency; young people at any levels of the buildings can be evacuated in the shortest time to the outdoor preventing escaping congestion which may lead to life threaten consequences.

 The Experience Center locates at the North-west coner of the site, ends the view from the main entrance with a unique and iconic shape. A big LED screen outside of the Experience Center can be used by public for all kinds of cultural activities. An enclosed atrium space inside the volume provides natural lighting and ventilation.

 The Art Center refers to the Theatre in the brief. We suggest to extend the function of the theatre by introducing exhibition spaces into the high volume of the fly loft. A continuous grand stair will connect the main lobby and the exhibition space, in which, rehearsal rooms could be found on the third floor. The main rehearsal room will be equipped with theatric lighting and speaker system for possible multi-purpose usage, such as performance. To the south of the Art Center, is the water front stage with spring. The stage is surrounded with 2000 seats on the podium roof.

 A 3000 square meter gymnasium and a 6 lane indoor shot-range swimming pool could be found in the Sports Center. The gymnasium is designed as a large span column-free space which will accommodate training and games of different in-door sports. The Sports Center has direct access to the existing out-door sports courts, the sports complex not only allows flexible sports training community, but also offers various recreational activities for the visiting parents and the community.

16

 The training center and theatre are the two most important parts of this design which will have a large adult and children ossupants load after they are built up. We took the circulation flows and safety issue into consideration and created two innovative and practical buildings.

Streamline form is used in interior design, in order to reflect the streamline form on the facade, gesture of the buildings as well as landscape. And, we use materials to make children feel comfortable, which is good to children's mental developing. The soft and bright light during nighttime and abundant daylight during daytime enriches the interior environment. Colors are carefully selected to help stimulating children's creativity. All in all, it's a integrated design.

The museum, hotel and office area occupied the south side of the park with a great sea view to provide a comfortable working environment. Three office buildings are connect by a big conference center on bottom, and can be directly accessed by the big parking lot on the north. Car traffic and pederian traffic are seperated by the highly organized landscape design. The total land area is 333,882 m2; overall floorage is 233,000 m2.

As a team number in the suto park design group, I participated from the concept design in beginning to the design development phase. I took responsibility for the 3d model building and 2d drawings for offices and hotel. As an international group, communication never be our problem, and I was always willing to cooperate with others with careful understanding and innovative ideas. 19

Intern Projects  The project is located in Yizhuang in Beijing, a rising high-tech area. It contains an experiment center, a production workshop and a support center. The innovative roundness design responses well to the site condition and function requirement, and in accordance with an old saying in China says the Earth was square and Heaven was round. A big conference room and gallery center in north is opened up to welcome the guests. And the experiment center both in east and west sides form a private environment with 4 rest garden between each office area.

I worked as an intern there. In the concept phase, I contribute to two different designs and both of them are great ideas and organize the funcitinal parts in plan. After choosing this one as a final project, I helped building schemetic and detail model in Sketch-up with well developed interior and exterior. In additional, I have the great chance to communicate with stucture engineers, HVAC engineers, water and electricity engineers for the further drawing documents. I particpated some part of the design documents. 20

It attracts students from all over the world with technological innovation, leadership and service. Also the university help the environment of city Flint, which carrys high crime rate. During past 10 years, the university have bought big ammounts of lands from the neighbor residents and is looking forward to enlarge their area for growing students and staffs. They requires a new master plan for next 20 years to make the university a safer and more organized place to study and live.

To reach clients requires, a series of analysis was made to value what should added and how to redesign the plan. I helped building 3d model in sketch up and doing physical model of exsiting university, and combine utility and building data to reach an accurate condition. During the process, I have the great chance to visiting the university once a week to listen and communicate with the principle and some managers. The working experience in America give me a chance to learn how a firm operates and what I can contribute. 21
