JUNEAU PLEDGE
I’m excited to explore Alaska’s Wilderness Capital City, and as a visitor, I pledge to:
• respect the culture of the Áak’w Kwáan and T’aakú Kwáan Tlingit people – the first people. I am standing on their traditional lands.
• understand that totem poles are sacred to the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people. I will not touch them.
• remember that the neighborhoods I walk through are home to Juneau families and that most of the shops I enter are owned and operated by locals.
• look for crosswalks and check for cars before stepping off sidewalks.
• follow marked trails rather than create my own in the wilderness.
• protect and respect all wildlife, both on land and at sea, by keeping a safe distance.
• engage in safe selfies by being conscious of my surroundings.
• prepare for rain, as I’m in a rainforest.
• pack out whatever I pack in.
• leave nature how and where I found it.
• enjoy Juneau’s award-winning tap water by refilling my water bottle whenever possible.
WELCOME
Welcome to the homeland of the Áak’w Kwáan and T’aakú Kwáan Tlingit of Southeast Alaska. The Tlingit people have owned and occupied these lands and waters since time immemorial. Scientific evidence reveals that Indigenous Peoples have lived here for more than 10,000 years.
The Tlingit are guided by four ancient values that remain central today:
• Haa Aaní (protecting and honoring the land): The Tlingit believe that everything has a spirit, including the animals and trees. In utilizing resources, the Tlingit acknowledge the Spirits of the Land, Sea, and Air.
• Haa Latseení (strength of body, mind, and spirit): Young Tlingit men and women are taught to achieve physical and inner strength, to protect and care for their community, to seek truth and knowledge, and to adapt to changing times while maintaining the integrity of ancient values.
• Haa Shuká (honoring ancestors and future generations): The Tlingit maintain strong bonds with their ancestors, whom they honor in their daily lives and in ceremonies. They also protect their land and culture for their children and grandchildren and those who will follow them.
• Wooch Yáx (maintaining social and spiritual balance and harmony): This value guides relationships with others and includes kaa yáa awuné (respect for others) and at yáa awuné (respect for all things).
Please look for Tlingit translations throughout this guide.

OCEAN
éil’
Southeast Alaska connects with people on an emotional level. The world as it was created still exists here. The tide pulses twice a day as if the earth takes two long, slow breaths and pushes aside the sea, moving it farther from shore then bringing it back again. Tides and currents circulate marine nutrients and cold water, both necessary for rich ocean life.
We are people of the trees and the tides. Mist carries the scent of the sea and its abundant life to marry it with the land. Waves lap gently, sculpting the sand; at other times, they crash wildly against the rocks and erupt into white fans of spray. Castoff shells litter the shoreline and mix with braids of kelp and pillows of sea foam. Clams snuggled beneath the beach at low tide squirt their hidden presence like fountains. Silt tints the outflows of glacial rivers and creates distinct blocks of gray where fresh water meets green salt water. Where the waters blend, aqua ribbons weave together.
AIR
óox
The sky is never empty here. Ravens, eagles, hummingbirds, sapsuckers, hawks, swallows, sparrows, geese, cranes, ducks, swans. The air is never birdless. Watch their movements to learn the business of the natural world. Listen in winter alongside a mostly-icy stream for the lilting song of the American Dipper when all the other birds are hushed by the cold.
The forest exhales wisps of fog toward the sky. Caught by the breeze and stretched into strands of mist, the fog drapes itself above the trees, reaching to reunite with the clouds. Layers of fog dissolve then reappear. In a similar fashion, the northern lights wrap themselves through the sky like a giant lightshow of celestial fog. Appearing then disappearing. Typically pale green in color in Southeast Alaska’s northern sky, the aurora borealis rewards skywatchers once the night’s darkness offers a backdrop. Some of the aurora’s mystery is decoded by science: the University of Alaska Fairbanks provides a link to learn the likelihood, extent, and intensity of nightly aurora potential in our state. Check out gi.alaska.edu.
LAND
tl’átk
In some places, land belongs to people. Here, people belong to the land. Like the landscape, Southeast Alaskans are as strong and resilient as the giant spruce and hemlock trees that we live among. Green needles persist year round on the long boughs. Mossy carpets cushion softness and color beneath the trees. Like our forest surroundings, we are steadfast.
Life thrives in the natural environment. Rain nurtures. Waterfalls swell. Fawns prance after their mothers. Songbirds fill the air with avian conversations. It’s springtime. Leaves burst open as daylight lengthens to its fullness of 18 hours in June. By late August, golden leaves brighten the land. The gentle low-angle sun of autumn enriches colors. Then snow transforms everything with its whiteness cloaking peaks and porches. Each season is a celebration of life on the land.
COMMUNITY
ku.oo
Juneau is home to about 33,000 year-round residents and embraces the concept of “community.”
We enjoy the benefits of being Alaska’s capital and having a four-year university alongside our bustling K-12 schools, regional hospital, and a busy international airport, as well as a downtown filled with busy local shops operated by neighbors and friends.
But, even with our modern technology and sophistication, Juneau feels like a step into an earlier time with its smalltown atmosphere. Often, we feel there are only three degrees of separation from each other; it’s difficult to go grocery shopping or run errands without encountering someone you know or the occasional bear.
Above all else, we look out for one another, whether by sharing meals and vehicles or giving a new acquaintance from an Alaska Airlines flight or ferry trip a lift into town. Our homes are filled with Alaska Native and local artwork and we enjoy old-fashioned July 4th parades. We know our neighbors.
We hope you feel inspired to think of Juneau not only as a spectacular getaway but as home.

WINTER
táakw
Juneau’s winter is anything but colorless. The snow-covered 4,000-foot mountains are canvases for nature’s best paintings. Shadows carve indigo contrasts amid sun-softened pastels. Freshness beckons us into the daylight. Snow on the forest floor brightens the lush deep-green spruce and hemlock landscape that surrounds us. It lures us to ski on groomed cross-country trails or Eaglecrest Ski Area slopes. By night, cloudless evenings grant the chance to see the northern lights and star-filled skies.
Wedged between ocean and mountains, Southeast Alaska’s climate is moderated by the maritime environment. Winter temperatures hover around freezing while summers are cool and misty.
Winter is Juneau’s social season. The town swings into activity. Choose from world-class plays, restaurants, lectures, symphony performances, gallery openings, and dances. Start with fresh-roasted coffee and an energizing breakfast, then take off for the scenery, and finally return for the cultural immersion and dinner. Live like the locals.
Eaglecrest Ski Area
907.790.2000 | skieaglecrest.com | 3000 Fish Creek Rd
Skiing in Alaska is a dream for many, but skiing at Eaglecrest offers panoramic ocean views from the top of Douglas Island and deep snowy terrain for everyone. Eaglecrest is Juneau’s community-owned ski area with 1620’ vertical drop and 640 acres of terrain. Virtually no lift lines, affordable tickets ($75 day pass!), and world-class skiing. Eaglecrest offers a variety of terrain and unparalleled backcountry access.
We’re more accessible than you think; at just a 2.5-hour flight from Seattle and a 20-minute drive from downtown Juneau, you’ll be on one of four chairlifts ready to explore in no time. If you can make it to Eaglecrest on the same day you arrive in Juneau, you’ll ski for free with your boarding pass. Eaglecrest also offers multi-day deals through Powder Alliance, the Indy Pass, and the Freedom Pass.
WILDERNESS
galgaakú
Immerse yourself outdoors to fully experience Southeast Alaska. Adventure calls you into kayaks to explore nearby islands. Paddle quiet waters or cresting waves. Raft the rapids of a river. Wheel into new places on touring bikes or mountain bikes. Get carried away on ziplines above the treetops. Beachcomb along sandy or rocky shorelines. Strap on crampons for a spirited climb on a glacier. Tuck in for a dash across the ice with a team of huskies on a dogsled ride over the endless snow of the icefield. Fall asleep in your tent to the hush of whales breathing offshore.
Find yourself in solitary communion with the natural world. Breathe in the scent of evergreens. Linger in the glow of a golden sunset. Hug a mug of tea and listen to the dawn chorus of birds. Soak up the cool mist of morning fog. Refresh your spirit with wildness. Recover in the calmness.
Juneau lies in the heart of the Tongass National Forest, the world’s largest temperate rainforest, with nearly 17 million acres of forest, ice, and rock. There is awe and opportunity and an obligation to care for the world we inherit.
Wilderness is always nearby. City neighborhoods cling to steep hillsides where wildlife thrives. Nests hide in the trees. Waddling porcupines know they own the world in their armored coat of barbed quills. A doe and her fawn silently disappear into the brush. We are never alone; we just may not see which wild neighbor is watching us.

GLACIERS
sít’
Glaciers are our daily connection to ancient times. Stunning blue ice peeks from sharp-edged blades of glaciers. Waterfalls spout from openings beneath snow-covered ice that is hundreds of years old. Mendenhall Glacier and 38 others named "rivers of ice" flow down from the Coast Range where they are born in the 1500-square-mile Juneau Icefield. They provide a continuous supply of fresh water that nurtures the tiniest creatures and the largest species. Glacial ice and meltwater redistribute pulverized nutrients from mountains to meadows. They feed microorganisms that grow fish and forests.
Glaciers are blue due to the density of the ice compacted over generations of snowfalls. From the miniscule to the mighty, wet marine air, cold temperatures, and time build glaciers from tiny snowflakes. Glaciers grind down the mountains they cover. Most of Alaska’s glaciers are melting, some very rapidly. In the temperate climate of the coastal rainforest, warming temperatures mean more rain and less snow. Big changes are predicted and we continue to see them every year.
Examining Juneau’s glaciers can be done by road, boat, or aircraft. The easiest exploration is the 13-mile drive from downtown to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center and a hike to Nugget Falls for the closest view. Flightseeing lifts you above the ice to walk on glaciers, ride in a dogsled, or gaze on the vastness of snow and ice. Waterborne excursions carry passengers to nearby Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness and through Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. A leisurely Alaska Marine Highway ferry ride offers a relaxing journey through the Inside Passage with glaciers spilling from high mountain valleys.

BEAR VIEWING
s’eek - black bear xóots - grizzly bear
Watching a bear splash through a creek chasing a powerful salmon is a magical moment. Wild brown or black bears can be seen throughout Alaska. Some bear-viewing locations are remote with outfitters and guides sharing the best places to safely observe bears. Other sites are close to towns: bears share the same places we use.
Bears are active from spring through freeze-up. Their wild diets feature fresh greens and tree catkins in springtime, wild berries and plants in summer, and salmon in late summer and fall. Bears are omnivores and eat a variety of foods. They hibernate in dens during winter.
The key to safety around bears is awareness. Learn best practices from knowledgeable sources. Keeping human food away from bears and other wildlife is essential. Alertness on local trails and backyards offers opportunities for careful viewing. Respect bears’ need for adequate space.
WILDLIFE
atgutu.ádi - animals of the woods
Our lives are filled with wild neighbors. We share the sky with eagles, ravens, owls, cranes, and herons along with many songbirds. We share the land with bears, beavers, river otters, deer, coyotes, wolves, and multiple small beings. We share the seas with orca and humpback whales, sea lions, harbor seals, and porpoises. Low tide pulls back the ocean to reveal giant sunflower starfish as well as smaller versions in a wild range of colors. Clams, mussels, anemones, and others peep out when the water drains away then surge to life when it returns.
Living with wildlife builds an awareness of our surroundings. You can encounter a bear on trails or in neighborhoods. We learn to co-exist with nature to keep animals wild and people safe. Knowledge brings comfort. Alertness makes magical moments and maintains respectful distances.
Each season offers its own secrets. Search for winter tracks in the snow as footprints reveal their makers’ whereabouts. Spring birds add cheery songs in the trees. Find eagles’ nests with tiny gray fuzzball eaglets peering over the edge or watching for their parents to bring food.
Mother bears lead their cubs through the forest to teach them what to eat or how to nap in the trees. Summer is the time of abundance for all as plants erupt into bloom. White mountain goats nibble greens on ridge lines. Autumn’s bare cottonwood limbs and falling yellow leaves make perfect perches for eagles and ravens, the smart, curious birds of Alaska Native stories. They all wait for late runs of coho salmon for a final feast.
WHALES
yáay - whale kéet - orca
Watchable wildlife opportunities continue in the sea. Around Juneau, humpback whales congregate in summer to feast on herring and tiny organisms called krill. A variety of tour operators offer chances to observe the huge whales from boat decks of all sizes. Occasionally, humpbacks can be seen from shore from highway waysides. Watch for the bold plume of misty breath as the whales exhale when they surface. Humpbacks are great migrators: they feed in cold Alaska waters then move to warm Hawaiian zones for birth and mating in winter. They arrive in late spring in Southeast Alaska hungry for the food they cannot find in tropical waters.
Orcas, or killer whales, are a special treat to see. Large pods of fish-eating orcas travel the length of the Inside Passage with occasional sightings in Juneau. Mammal-eating orcas swim in smaller, stealthy pods searching for seals and sea lions. The distinctive 6-foot tall knife-shaped dorsal fins of male killer whales are usually the first sight of a pod. Yet these long-lived marine mammals are guided by the mothers in their midst: orca societies are matriarchal. Look for young whales of all species when they surface to breathe beside their much larger mothers.

SALMON FISHING CALENDAR
PEAK FISHING FISH AVAILABLE
FISHING
ast’eixí - fisherman
Five species of wild salmon, (pink - cháas’, sockeye - gaat , coho - l’ook, chum - téel’, king - t’á), herring - yáaw, halibut - cháatl, many other finfish, and shellfish fill our waters, pots, and dinner plates. Commercial, charter, personal use, and subsistence fishing are all important economic and sustenance drivers. Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulates fishing by location, date, and gear. Fishing licenses are required. Your charter boat captain can provide a license or you can purchase one at various retail outlets. Pick up a free state fishing guide when you get your license. By ensuring safe and adequate returns of salmon and other fish, we can continue to harvest mindfully and sustain the fisheries. Fish hatcheries provide brood stock for release to the ocean when the juvenile fish are big enough. Fish farming, however, is prohibited in Alaska.
Walking the docks gives you a good opportunity to meet fishermen (and fisherwomen!) and learn about their catch. The city operates harbors in downtown Juneau, Douglas, and Auke Bay with boat launches in additional places.
The life cycle of salmon nurtures everything on land and in the sea. Salmon begin life in freshwater, migrate to salt water to grow and feed, then return to their natal creek to spawn a new generation. Different species use different creeks at different times of the year. Spawning salmon change their appearance from silvery bright ocean fish to multi-colored skin patterns as each species charges toward home. Salmon feed the forest when their remains fertilize the land after spawning or passing through wildlife.
Fresh and frozen packaged seafoods fly south daily in summer. Experts can help you prepare your catch for safe transport and good eating after you return home. Be sure to get some great recipes for sharing the bounty in flavorful ways. Smoked salmon is convenient to carry or ship.

We have the perfect mix of wild and civilized life without sacrificing either. For many Juneauites, the ideal day consists of hiking, biking, fishing, or skiing followed by a quick change of clothing for an evening at the symphony or live theater productions. Small town convenience means driving takes minutes, not hours, to get from exploration to entertainment.
History comes alive at several locations. Stories of the people of the 49th state personalize Alaska Native culture, early gold mining, fishing, and state government. The Alaska State Capitol on Fourth Street and the nearby Governor’s House connect citizens with state decision-makers. The octagonal 1894 St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church is another block away. Collections of photographs and artifacts illustrate how our landscape has defined our lives and lifestyles.
Stroll the docks, enjoy the flower barrels, and discover Juneau’s legacy on interpretive signs along the popular downtown seawalk. Read the names on the Fishermen’s Memorial, then study the World War II history commemorating the USS Juneau. At the seawalk’s end, admire the life-size leaping humpback whale sculpture at Overstreet Park near the JuneauDouglas bridge. Pause along downtown streets at Manila Square which honors our strong Filipino community. Explore Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian totems and Northwest Coast art. Learn the heroism of Medal of Honor recipient and U. S. Marine Archie Van Winkle. Look for changing exhibits at one of many stunning public libraries. Then rest on a bench and contemplate how you would fit in to the past, present, or future of Alaska’s capital city.

We honor the Indigenous people who have lived here since time immemorial. Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people are generous with their cultures, sharing their knowledge with others. The Áak’w Kwáan and T’aakú Kwáan are Tlingit Alaska Natives with traditions formed by their intimacy with the natural world. The culture is based on balance and reciprocity with respect as a key quality. Clans and tribes celebrate their cultural vitality with appreciation for the ancestors’ knowledge and dedication to future generations’ wellbeing. Resilience is demonstrated through longevity and continued adaptation to both traditional and contemporary life.
In June of even-numbered years, "Celebration" welcomes thousands of Native people to Juneau. Regalia with years of clan history are brought out to proclaim their heritage. Dances performed in new and old ways enrich the understanding of all attending the huge gathering. Following ancient protocols, traditional Tlingit canoes approach shore with cedar paddles pointed to the sky. They request permission to enter clan territory and are received with timeless songs and drumming. Elders are revered.
Today, Tlingit names appear on Juneau’s buildings, maps, and signs, often with interpretation so all can learn the Indigenous language. In the heart of downtown, Sealaska Heritage’s Walter Soboleff Building presents the culture in meaningful exhibits told by the people who know it best. The cultural renaissance enriches everyone’s life.
NORTHWEST COAST ART
Part of a Living Culture
Northwest Coast art evolved over thousands of years in the rich and complex Indigenous societies of the Pacific Northwest of North America. It is wholly unique to this region of the world.
Northwest Coast art is distinctive for its use of formline design. A disciplined interconnected framework of curving lines of varying width (formline) is combined with other shapes to compose images of animals, spiritual beings, elements of the landscape, or other designs. Although the basic conventions of formline design may seem simple, it takes a master to create the kind of balance and flow that this art form can express.
Formline designs can be seen in Southeast Alaska Native art traditions such as totem poles, clan house posts, bentwood boxes, and Chilkat weaving - traditions that continue to evolve through the work of contemporary Indigenous artists. Today’s artists also create jewelry, apparel, and other artwork featuring formline designs for everyone to enjoy.
Sealaska Heritage
907.463.4844 | sealaskaheritage.org | 105 Heritage Way
In the core of downtown, visitors can see for themselves why Juneau is the "Northwest Coast Arts Capital of the World." The Sealaska Heritage Arts Campus and Walter Soboleff Building share monumental formline art, a 360-degree cedar totem pole (the only of its kind in Alaska), bronze house posts, an enormous carved house front, a glass house screen, and rotating exhibit. Travelers seeking an educational and authentic experience will discover it here. Take home a one-of-a-kind Native art piece or souvenir from the Sealaska Heritage Store.
Sealaska Heritage is a Native-owned nonprofit dedicated to perpetuating and enhancing Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures of Southeast Alaska. The institute operates education programs in art, language immersion, early literacy, and performing arts. The institute also publishes books and academic papers, offers a free lecture series, sponsors scientific research, and documents ceremonies and traditional knowledge that are at risk of being lost to time.
In 2023, Sealaska Heritage raised 12 new totem poles along the Juneau waterfront. The project known as Kootéeyaa Deiyí (Totem Pole Trail), will create an additional 18 new poles for a total of 30 kootéeyaa that will welcome visitors to the shores of Tlingit ancestral homelands. The project perpetuates the endangered art of totem pole carving while educating visitors on the significance of this distinctive art form.

GOLD RUSH
goìon - gold
Today’s Juneau reveals the character of its mining heritage. Houses climb hillsides trodden by early miners’ boots. Sinuous streets echo original shorelines. Structures built to serve a bustling community still stand along those streets. The iconic turreted Franklin Street former laundry building, completed in 1901, connects a bygone era with 21st century visitors who stroll downtown’s historic district.
Gastineau Channel’s gold mines established a stable culture that outlived the West’s typical boom and bust cycles. The mines began in 1880 when local Tlingit Chief Kowee guided two prospectors into a steep basin to show them the gold they were seeking. Joe Juneau and Richard Harris are credited with the discovery. Nuggets on the surface indicated where deeper veins lay. Complex networks of underground shafts and tunnels eventually honeycombed mountains. Large scale industrial processing mills rose on each shore. Innovative engineers developed operations that were famous throughout the mining world. While the gold was melted into bars, tailings built a solid, level landscape for the towns to grow.
The Treadwell, Perseverance, Thane, and Alaska-Juneau mines nurtured other businesses and imprinted their names on the future. Dairies, markets, manufacturing plants, churches, theaters, bars, schools, and civic organizations prospered. Some endure.
The pioneer spirit lives today in the great-grandchildren of early mining families. They are firefighters whose predecessors saved Juneau from being engulfed in flames. They host present day church socials, pancake breakfasts, parades on the Fourth of July, and dedications honoring fishermen lost at sea. They started businesses that stepped in when the big mines faded. Fishing, tourism, education, government, and the services that complement those ventures emerged.
Mining continues to play a vital economic role. Two large mines operate off the road system with Juneau as their hub. Historic mining’s legacy lives on in hydropower plants, trails, and memories. Aside from the ore deposits, there is gold — free for all — in Juneau’s sunrise and sunset.

WHAT TO PACK
Why do the locals all wear those brown boots?
The go-to footwear in Southeast Alaska is the knee-high rubber brown boot also known as the "Southeast Sneaker." The boot earned its reputation among Alaska fisherman and rainforest residents because it’s sturdy, waterproof, and almost slip-proof under wet and slimy conditions, making it more useful than most sneakers. Around Juneau, this boot goes with everything from rain gear to formal wear, and you’ll see them on hikers, store clerks, students, and bankers.
How do I pack for Juneau?
When it comes to Juneau weather, prepare for the rain and hope for the sun. As noted on the Juneau Weather page, the temperate rainforest keeps our town from being overly warm in the summer and overly cold in the winter. If you'll be spending time outdoors in Juneau, it's a good idea to always include the following:
• Lightweight, breathable, non-cotton layers that you can easily add to for warmth and/or dryness
• A fleece jacket or lightweight wool sweater to guard against wind or cooler temps
• Waterproof jacket with a hood
• Water-resistant pants
• Sturdy water-resistant footwear
• Sunscreen and sunglasses
• Warm hat
• Refillable water bottle – you’ll want to drink as much of Juneau’s great water as you can!
For winter adventure just add:
• Heavier layers, depending upon your activities
• Wool or similar socks to keep your feet happy
• Waterproof gloves or mittens and a scarf
That's it - you're set for your Juneau adventures!

MEET THE NEIGHBORS
k’idaakwáani - neighbor
Juneau is the commercial hub of northern Southeast Alaska. From neighboring communities people gravitate to the Capital City for connections to jet flights, medical care, shopping, and entertainment. Commuter airlines, water taxis, and Alaska Marine Highway ferries transport passengers from quiet, tight-knit towns and villages via Juneau to the world outside.
For many of our neighbors, home is a remote location where the ocean and forest dominate the landscape. People live independent lives yet rely on neighbors in times of need. Innovative off-the-grid power sources allow comfort and become the topic of café and post office conversations.
The common thread in Southeast Alaska is reverence and respect for water and wood. Knowing ways to harvest nature’s bounty and avoid catastrophe keeps residents alive and thriving. Spontaneous potlucks and music jams gather us in to share food and stories. Most communities have a school where events pull everyone together to support their youth in sports, spelling bees, and read-a-thons.
Pelican and Elfin Cove are known for their boardwalks. Tenakee Springs features a popular hot spring and a no-vehicle main street lined with flower-trimmed cabins. Haines is dominated by steep, rugged peaks and the largest concentration of bald eagles in the country every autumn; it’s a hotspot for heliskiing in winter. Skagway has restored its authentic Klondike Gold Rush history with the help of the National Park Service and the seasonal operation of the historic White Pass and Yukon Route narrow-gauge railway. Likewise, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve anchors the town of Gustavus and its residents. Hoonah and Kake are strongholds of the Alaska Native culture as is Angoon, the only permanently settled community on Admiralty Island, with its clan houses and powerful link to tradition. Klukwan, 20 miles from Haines, is one of the most important Tlingit villages in Southeast Alaska. Sitka embraces its Russian-American heritage. Petersburg is a fishing town with strong Norwegian roots as seen in its colorful rosemaling-painted homes. Wrangell is the gateway to the broad valley of the Stikine River that penetrates deep into British Columbia. Only Haines and Skagway have highway links to the continental road system.
Getting there is part of the adventure. With few roads and vast distances, air taxis, water taxis, and ferries connect us. Scheduled service or charters can transport individuals or groups to your destination. Many options for travel are available, with spectacular views along the way.
Alaska stories abound. Immerse yourself in books about adventures and lifestyles. Check the library and bookstores to learn first hand what it takes to build and sustain a life here. Take home a written memory then record your own.

Thank you for choosing Juneau, Alaska! This guide was created by the Juneau Convention & Visitors Bureau DBA Travel Juneau. We hope you enjoyed reading about our community. Thank you to Laurie Craig for so beautifully capturing Juneau in words, to Sealaska Heritage Institute for their guidance, to our valued partners in Juneau and Southeast Alaska, and for those partners that advertised in this guide through "partner content."
JUNEAU'S TOP ATTRACTION
| 888.461.8726
| 490 S Franklin St
Soar to new heights on a fantastic scenic adventure aboard the Goldbelt Tram, the number one attraction in Juneau.
The Goldbelt Tram whisks away visitors from Sea Level to SEE Level, 1,800 FT above historic downtown Juneau. The 5-minute ride travels through the rugged natural temperate rainforest terrain to the alpine above.
As the only aerial tramway in Southeast Alaska, the Goldbelt Tram travels through the largest national forest in the United States, the Tongass National Forest. Once you disembark the tram cars into the skybridge, you will see the expansive and breathtaking views of Douglas Island, the Chilkat Mountain range to the North, Gastineau Channel below and south to Admiralty Island.
When you are finished admiring the views, saunter on down the skybridge to our Mountain House which is the gateway to so much more. The Mountain House contains our Goldbelt Tram Gift shop, the Timberline Bar & Grill as well as the Chilkat Theater. Once you exit the main facility you are welcome to explore some of the trails located on the mountain.
Your ticket is good for unlimited rides all day long, our attraction is at your leisure, you can come and go as you please. Our hours of operation tend to vary during the shoulder season. For the most updated information, please see our website or like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram. We look forward to seeing you on the mountain!
