MARKET PLACE & LIBRARY BRONZEVILLE FARMER`S MARKET + PUBLIC LIBRARY location: CHICAGO, UNITED STATES project year: 2017 The Cloud Market & Public Library aims to create an hybrid building combining both the motion and color of a market and a place of gathering knowledge and focus of a library. The project is located on the South of the neighborhood and is a natural connector between 31st street and Gropious Plaza in the North. It also connects the Train stations with the commercial area on the west of the neighborhood. Since is the first building that visitors see from the south side of the neighborhood the project aims to achieve certain transparency and porosity so the market can become a portal from North to South and East to West.

MARKET PLACE & PUBLIC LIBRARY MASTER PLAN The new Market Place and Public Library from Bronzeville consists on a public building that can be accessed from either North, South, East or West side of the Neighborhood. The main idea of the architectural concept is to create a porous building with enough transparency to connect the four areas of the Neighborhood: Train Station, Commercial Area, Gropious Plaza and 31st Street. Brock / Market Place

5

DESIGN INTENT CONCEPTUAL GOAL: PERMEABILITY & TRANSPARENCY The Cloud Market at Bronzeville aims to become a portal between the four sides of the site: From 31st Street (North) to Gropious Plaza (South) and from Commercial Area (East) to the Lakefront and Farm (West). The building mimics the form of a porous sponge/cloud, an element of transparency where people can commute to every part of the neighborhood. The ETFE facade with the 3x3 steel structural module allows a fluid circulation as the marketplace suggests and the landscape design is a continuity of the same exterior of Gropious Plaza and Main Street, giving the users the sensation of being under an open pavilion and natural forest. The library is located in the basement on the south side of the project.

1. SITE AS A CONNECTOR

2.MAIN AXIS

3. X-AXIS

The site is a natural connector between the south and the north part of the neighborhood, as well as east-west axis.

The two main axis for circulation go from 31st street to Gropious Plaza and from the Train Station to the commercial area of the neighborhood.

What is called X axis in the project is the circulation that goes from south to north, connecting 31st street with Gropious Plaza.

4. Y-AXIS

5. OPEN BUILDING

6. SCAFFOLDING + ETFE

The Y axis goes from East to west connecting the visitors that come from the Train station to the Commercial and Retail area of the neighborhood.

X and Y axis propose a grid that creates an open building system structure for free infills and circulation.

The scaffolding structure with the ETFE on the facade bring transparency to the building and a sense of timeless architecture and a landmark.

7

DESIGN INTENT TRANSPARENCY AND POROSITY The Cloud Market emulates a porous element which tries to absorb people and release them to other places of the neighborhood (as a portal). In this way, we create a grid of thin structural elements that allow natural light and ventilation to come in and out and then contain it with an ETFE facade to create a sense of continuity with the natural landscape of the neighborhood. The ETFE facade is hidden within the structural elements. The sense of scaffoldness is part of the concept of a timeless building that doesn´t get old with time and it´s always stable within evolution of the neighborhood.

SOLID & VOID MERGE To achieve the concept of transparency and permeability we create a natural structural frame of metallic elements with a 7'x7' grid to allow the circulation to be open. The "solid" elements becomes the space where people can circulate while the void is just the spaces where no activity occur.

Market place needs open space for selling to the visitors and residential living around the market place. 4 kinds of market consist of meat, sea food, grain / flower and vegetable / fruit zone. We also diveide the characteristic of the stalls. One is temporary stalls for the products coming from the maker space every weekend , another is permenant stalls for the residential living around the market place.

AERIAL VIEW THE DENSE FOREST Viewed from the top of buildings such as the residential towers, train station or the commercial terraces, the Market Place seems to be a dense forest of structural elements that create a sense of porosity and at the same time an sculpture on the field. The Market Place open building systems and the ETFE facade allows it to be viewed from the top and all the sense of motion that people create inside of it. The building becomes a portal between the four sides of the site and allows not only physical connection but visual transparency between the views of the people.

FLOOR PLANS BASEMENT FLOOR

GROUND FLOOR

In case of the basemet, to keep transparency, our mechanical system and other facilities are located the basement. Whole building system generate from the mechanical room and also the kitchen for restaurant in ground floor is located on the basement because of the ventilation. Library in the basement connents physically to the ground floor. It makes habitants or visitors easily go into the library. Besides, We divide the loading zone and auto parking lot. In terms of the auto parking lot, It connects from the main street to auto parking in basement.

Variety of market places are located on the ground floor. Four different kind of market place provide food or raw material for the habitant and visitor. And also we consider the temporary and permanently market. In case of the temporary market place, it opens on weekend and they come from the making place for selling their products. Mid part in our market, they have small promenade. It makes people feel in the forest and also our scaffolding does the same as the role. Some part have trees and it could be a shelter for the visitor.

SCHEMATIC PERSPECTIVES MARKET PLACE FROM 31ST STREET The building creates a visual connectivity from 31st street to the north side of the neighborhood. The buffer that is created between Gropious Plaza and the Market Place leaves an open space that becomes a public plaza from visitors and residents from the neighborhood. Visitors that come to the neighborhood arriving from south side and go to the commercial area have this building as the main landmark for orientation within the neighborhood. The building becomes an analogy of a sponge or coral that wants to absorb people inside it and then releasing them in other parts of the neighborhood as a portal.

SCHEMATIC PERSPECTIVES INTERIOR PERSPECTIVE The scaffolding structure and facade has the potential of creating a visual connectivity from the south side of the neighborhood to the farm and the residential towers. It is also an sculpture on the field that becomes a landmark within the neighborhood and the soroundings. The porous structure gives the possibility of creating a building that seems to be still under construction but that is actually surounded by an ETFE structure that protects from the outside weather conditions.

MEP DETAILS MECHANICAL SYSTEM DRAWING Whole mecanical system starts from the mechanical room located in the basement. generating electricity could make operating for ventilation and lighting system. We calculate the each section load they need, and then we decide the size of the water tank, Electricity system, plumbing and sprinkler for fire protection. Next step, we distribute the location of the system.

MEP DETAILS PLUMBING SYSTEMS In terms of the plumbing, how to use the strom water is important for us to reuse. because in our site, we have a farm zone near our market place. So If we make certain process flowing stormwater for farm, the farm could be supported by market water gutter. View from the right, it shows the diagram of the flowing storm water from the roof to farm and public sweage system, and also indicates the flowing lighting system.

MEP DETAILS LIGHTING SYSTEMS In case of the lighting system, we focus on the distribution of the lighting because we have an open space and our material of the elevation and roof is transparency such as glass wall and ETFE. So we use the relux software and how it works at some position. As a result, If we put the light on the ground every 9 by 9 inches, it could provide properly at the area.

MEP DETAILS HVAC ● Passive heating - Winter Increasing direct solar gain by adjusting roof shading systems ● Roof Shading - Summer Reduce solar gain from roof top by adjusting roof shading systems ● Radiation heating floor for winter and air conditioning in summer is a strategy focusing on the areas near the ground which will greatly reduce the cooling and heating load.
