Open discussion on controversial topics On the last day of the Conference, Mr Wallace Isaacs led an open discussion on various topics, which gave learners the opportunity to air their views on current controversial issues.

The leaders’ responses were as follows:

1 State capture, hijacked buildings and slavery: Do these things have anything in common?

State capture is the capturing of a state/country, high jacking is the capturing of a building/person while slavery is the capturing of a life.

It is all about external people coming in and taking advantage of other people in a dishonest way.

In all cases someone is affected negatively as something is taken against someone’s will and people are denied their rights.

It is born out of greed and selfishness.

It is unfair practices and leads to the degradation of the country’s economy.

It is instances where people take advantage of something that is not theirs.

Page 20

Religion, me and schools: Can I practice my religion in South Africa – whenever or only when appropriate?

South African schools are very open to practising all religions in schools.

At schools the main purpose is teaching although religion is important as the focus of learning which helps uniting people.

Religion of choice can be practised in schools only if the school is prepared to promote diversity and to compromise as far as a preferred religion is concerned without taking away from other religions.

The practising of religion in schools should stay within the rules of the constitution of the country and should not be enforced on people.

The application of a policy in schools should show respect towards all people.

The school policy should make provision for people to co-exist, to respect each other, to feel free to differ and not to feel under attack.

3

Gender equality: How will you create an environment in this school that allows both boys and girls to excel?

Social stigmas, stereotypes and boundaries regarding male and female need to be broke down in communities.

Most of the people need to change their mentalities and as a new generation, explore new possibilities.

Provision should be made for mixed teams (eg debating teams) but also gender specific teams (eg soccer and netball)

Inclusion in teams should be based on capabilities.

School uniforms help to establish a feeling of unity and equality.

The same opportunities should be given to both genders but they should be given the freedom to choose and to excel in the opportunities that have been provided.

Page 21

Social media usage is actually bad for you. Go read the book ‘Digital Cocaine’. What do you think?

It is a personal choice to use social media

The problem lies in the power of social media and the negative impact it can have on our daily lives/relationships when used irresponsibly.

In general it is bad for you: -

Can lead to cyber bullying Can become addictive Celebrity influence - put their lives in danger for 'fame' Sets unreachable standards Time consuming, time waster Kills face-to-face interaction Creates a false sense of confidence (hiding behind a screen) People 'live' on their phones and loose their individuality Unhealthy completion on social media

It can be seen positive in the following instances:

-

Educational Cater for everyone's needs Good marketing tool Creates income for people Keep you up to date with information

5 Transformation in schools – from excellence to mediocrity or vice versa?

Transformation can lead to teachers teaching for money and not because of passion.

Transformation can lead to the appointment of inexperienced teachers that will lead to the downgrade of learner performance.

Transformation is a personal choice which can lead to either excellence or mediocrity. It depends on the attitude of the parties involved.

Individual learners should decide for themselves whether they are excellent and identify opportunities offered at school to excel.

School management teams should allocate funds to teams not based on who they are, but based on what they can achieve.

Page 22

Achievement pressures leading to an increase in anxiety and depression? How do we create a healthy environment to excel/compete …. or is this impossible?

In most schools there is an unhealthy competition between learners. When someone achieves, the others feel that they do not matter.

Another reality is that parents expect of their children to do better all the time and this is creating anxiety because the child does not necessarily have the potential.

All learners are excellent but school practises force them to become mediocre.

Motivation is needed to excel in an achievement environment. Each learner should be motivated to make realistic and responsible individual choices and not to compare themselves with the peer group.

Teachers should convey the message that your best is enough and give acknowledgement.

Healthy competition can be valuable as it pushes you to do your best. Exceeding personal goals, improve you as a person. Listen to advice but ran your own race!. If you have a problem, tell someone and accept the support structures available.

7 Racial identity in a non-racial society …. Any dangers? What does the constitution say?

Society at large and your environment have created the idea of race.

Racial identity can be confusing and government contradicts itself: According to the constitution you are free to choose your race but in some instances government choose for you (Quota system).

Everybody should respect race and be proud of their own race group which makes them unique.

It is the responsibility of each citizen to get to understand each other's culture.

Skin colour is not wrong: it is how people use it and wrongly classify people. People are stereotyped and treated negatively.

Can an honest business person be successful? A businessman can be successful without lying - the truth always comes out. Integrity is important as more people will look up to you and aspire to follow your example.

9 When is asking a fee for a service ‘justified”, ‘stealing’ or a “bribe”?

It is justified when you provide goods/services.

It is stealing when you cheat the other person out of what is fair.

It is bribing when business is done 'under the table' and those who should receive the money, don't.

‘Can you keep your head when others are losing theirs?’ Parents joined their children for the last session on Sunday morning. This session was presented by Pastor Immanuel Landman of Elim Full Gospel Church who dealt with the topic: ‘Can you keep your head when all around you are losing theirs’. Parents received valuable hints to help them support their children in their leadership roles. Pastor Landman emphasised the importance that becoming independent at an early age can benefit leaders in their respective roles. All guests enjoyed a tasty finger lunch before departure.
