SPRING 2019
JUNK DRAWER is a prompt-based art and literary magazine that aims
to both showcase what artists can produce when baited and to praise the tangential nature of creativity.
We are so inspired by the contributors’ interpretations of these prompts and hope that their work encourages readers to create something of their own. Feel very free to check the prompts at the end of each issue and send your arts our way. Thanks for giving a shit! Yours,
No part of this magazine may be used or reproduced without permission from the artists. For more information, contact junkdrawermagazine@gmail.com Cover art by Casey O’Brien

AARON BOYD
I graduated from MIAD with a BFA in Illustration and was most fortunate to know by the age of five that I wanted to be an artist. By the age of 6 I knew I wanted to make books with my art. My deepest fascination in art and life are the universal stories that bind us. My medium of choice is watercolor or mixed media with watercolor, crayon, ink and paper. www.aaronboydart.blogspot.com AMELINDA BURICH

TAMAG OTC H I “After the pet is born, it will have physiological and psychological needs. The pet will grow up smoothly on condition that the master has satisfied its needs in time. If the master has carefully tended it, the pet can grow up to 20 years of age and it will in the end sorrowfully say ‘Bye Bye’ to you.”
tonight I got drunk & ordered a Tamagotchi & immediately freaked out because I’m not ready but Savannah said she thinks I’ll be a great mom and I laughed about what 30 looks like these days & thanked the heavens for the 2000s and how they stretched out a woman’s timeline now I can rust any way I want RUST ANYWAY

I We drove to Cousins to split a 15” sub. I cried to myself in your mom’s car because Little Spacey came on. We walked side by side in the rain down Holy Hill and I wanted to make out in the secret little shack. I think anyone else would’ve been making out and that’s what I thought all summer. It was nice to drink tea in your clothes and sleep on your living room couch where you slept right beside me on the floor. In the morning you put your fingers between my tingling hand because I woke up with sleeping limbs and you wanted to make me feel good. But that would be another day we would not kiss and another day we would have a long hug goodbye in a car and another day I would leave you feeling so empty inside.

II I told you you were my first positive sexual experience since before I was raped and you said it’s hard for you to know I feel strongly for you. I thought about our teeth clinking together in a sopping wet tent and sitting in the tall grass along the river and looking panel by panel at Golda Meir’s mural we deemed the best piece of art in Milwaukee. I would go home after long bike rides across and under the interstate and write about how confused I was. My summer became our summer but like all seasons do it faded.

some days, September, my shadow gets ahead of me and I can see you in that mild, moving dark, like ‘hey, how’ve you been?’ and I’m like, ‘good!’ for whatever reason and then I spend hours walking mile after flowerless mile across the page, pulling hitchhikers out of poems that weren’t supposed to be about you.
