PROLOGUE
As a fifth year student of architecture, I begin to prepare portfolio for my journey in furthering academic studies. After organizing former works, I find my study process focuses on the local social and environmental integration and impacts of buildings. It is also about how to translate social needs into physical space. My attitude to architecture is be a responsible designer. In graducate school, I want to pursue more research into contextual, site constraints and socio-cultural, economic and environmental. I want design derives from in-depth analytical research, while also challenging current thinking and seeking optimized and exciting design solutions.

01 CULTURE CRAFT CARRIER IIT 3th Year Studio, Fall 2015 Site: Lake shore park. chicago Instructor: Martin Klaschen Individual work Lakeshore Park locates at the center of downtown Chicago. We are asked to decide the character of the building category and design the building in the topic of Hybrid. Considering the high density of the downtown Chicago with the progress of rapid urbanization development, It is tough to find a vacant area at the center of the city. Therefore, I think it is a potential to use the roof area as an urban space for people utilizing. For easier access, roof ramp is created to introduce people to walk from ground level to the roof level. With the concerning of the environmental programs, high density leads to the lack of the gathering space and communication area, so I think about the building could be a hybrid carrier to contain not only culture, commerce programs but also landscape and views for people to gather, relax, communicate and enjoy the beautiful time.Culture craft carrier is not just a building but an urban design space to consider the architecture operation and systems with the urban context.
Site Analysis With the consideration of the special site location, Lake shore park has a very close location to the main commerce area and easy access to enjoy the lake view. Main environment program are consist of the market and culture activities, therefore, the building with the culture service space and gathering space is to be considered.
Urban Design Proposal Roof staris as a urban design space has easy access to the people and introduce visitors to up to the end of the building to enjoy the nice lake view. At the same time. It is also a great space to gather and relax.

Free plan with Multifunction space The Building with free plan with cafe, retails, restaurants, library and center service area under the stairs is a friendly open space to welcome the people to get together, communicate and make friends.
A-A Section Huge stairs are transportation tools to connect roof level and ground level in the building. At the same time, it is also a multiple function space to make activities happen. Under the stairs, these are restrooms, kitchen, private research room and quiet relax space.
Typical Urban Design Stairs Urban scale stair becomes a cuture carrier to hybrid the culture activities, events, and landscape platform for people to enjot the views. It is also a informal activity and work space to welcome people to stay.
View from the Lake Urban roof becomes a landmark and a landscape of the downtown chicago with a rare peaceful open space for people to enjoy and stay.
02 Montessori Kindergarten School IIT 3th Year Studio, Spring 2016 Site: Chinatown. Chicago Instructor: Rechard Nelson Individual work The site locates at Chinatown residential area in Chicago. In this project, we are asked to design Montessori Kindergarten school with architecture organization and system. According to the urban environment with the surrounding residential area, easy access to the community becomes my point. Architecture as an enclosed space is always about interior systems. On the contrary, facade as an outside construction to face the urban environment becomes potential to make more connection between the building and the urban context. Stretched facade with programs becomes my idea to consider it as an attraction to the environment and people. Communication between the classrooms children is also essential to think about. Sharing garden activity area between the classrooms becomes an efficient way to improve the interaction among all the students.
Space development diagram Square as a single space is considered as an element to build the architecture system. With the development of the scale of the activities, space also develop with the organization of different square space.
Functional Elevation The Wall is not only a facade, a protection construction, but a space which have functions connected to the surrounding environment. Vertical space is joined with horizontal space which breaks the space limitation to think architecture system and organization in urban context perspective.

Stretched facade becomes a space with multiple functions. It is a protection construction, it is also a space area with urban context to connect environment.
Interactive plan activities break the traditonal classspace. Actvities are seperated in the classrooms and also connected with each other for communication and learning.
First floor plan axion Buiding is created to be highly open to the community which provides eay access and interesting activities.
Second floor plan axion Second Floor Classroom is connected with first floor classrooms by functional facade. RoofGarden and activity space is also considered to strengthen the communication between the students and teachers

Group work. Partner: Yechi Zhang Role in the project: concept development, structure design, plans and site plan design, program research and design.
The project is about Obama Presidential Library, one of the Obama mission center. I hope this project not only shows the monumental, great intention as an identified presidential library about Obama’s policy and proposals but also provide more access to all ages residents for them to know about the administration of the government to improve the health of communities. Michelle Garden is one of our proposals to provide an educational space for protecting children from climate changing. The other two buildings of the Obama center are the Museum and the Institute. I put the Library at the north of the Jackson park to show the relevant statute of the archives. The museum at the south of the site to face the senior high school to reveal more about the energy and open to the public and welcome for students to visit and study. The institute is located in the middle of the park to connect the Museum and institute.

To show collection of the Presidential Library, the big collection shelf is put in the center of the building . A big open road is to go through the building which make easy access for people going spontaneously use. This road also divides the building to two parts. One is more scholar and another one is more open to public and civic use. Two parts divide the main different program to protect the archival space privacy, at the same time , the central road also connect the two parts together. Site: Jackson park. Chicago
Instructor: Peter Landon, Tyler Brown, Bryant Pitak Group work. Partner: Tala Kadro Role in the project: concept development, structure design, plans and site plan design, program research and design. Site locates at the intersection of the 16th street and the end of the abandon expressway in the Pilsen neighborhood. An original location is a barren place but unique for the mural wall which is a long wall filled out with art drawings along the 16th street. Neighborhood Pilson is also an exciting area which is famous for the Mexican culture and art design. We begin our idea from the responding the Pilson’s art culture and site context. First, we want to provide a space for the artists in Pilson to develop and inspire their design and communication. A mix-use building including the residential, workshop, art retail, and gallery becomes a system service for the artists. Second, we want to give a new life to the expressway to change it to be the part of the Paseo, an architectural landscape of the urban design. Linear stairs make easy access to the Paseo. Extention of the end of the paseo with stairs on the 16 the street decreases the feeling of a sudden stop. Third, an art terminal about art performance and program created at the end of the paseo to provide a public gathering space for people from the neighborhood to make friends and enjoy the art. and life It also becomes a symbol of the end of the Paseo.

Wall Section Building facade consists of two layers. The first layer is glass windows which provide sufficient sunlight. The second layer is a movable panel which could be controlled. Portable panels surrounding the building with random location show the energy to respond the opposite mural wall and provide shadow at the same time.
Structure Diagram We choose composite steel joists. One of the reason is weight savings because the efficient joist design reduces overall building costs.
Perspective Section of Art terminal and Paseo Section perspective shows the relationship between the Paseo and the Art Terminal. Paseo as a public landscape provides open space for neighborhood residents to gather, do sports and relax. Above the end of the Paseo, art terminal turns out to be one f the landscape of the Paseo. It is a landmark to show the cultural identity of the Pilson. It is also an attraction to attract people’s view to the end of Paseo. With the cafe, the restaurant, gallery and activities, art terminal provide more opportunities and energy to the terminal point of the Paseo.

Renewable Technology System Diagram The “Sail” is a designed creative model for the mutible renewable technology in the project. The “ Sail” uses the latest material “ smart fabric”which can convert the solar to the electricity. Fine plastic meshes are another part of the Sail surface. 1.As fog passes through vertically oriented, fine plastic meshes, water molecules condense on the surfaces, forming droplets which cling to the mesh, slowly descending until aggregated in collection troughs where they then drain into storage basins for treatment and use. 2. Rotating sail poles converter the wind energy to electricity energy. 3. Sails combine fog generator, solar and wind convertor together.

06 INTERACTIVE PUPPY CUBE IIT Design Communication Instructor: Joel Putnam Using simulation engines and virtual reality tools, We develop immersive, interactive environments in 4 dimensions while continuing development of skills in object oriented thinking. Using basic electronics and small programmable computers called Microcontroller’s students will create responsive or interactive physical spaces with light or motion. Using a combination of thesenew technologies students will explore the entanglement, computation has enabled, between media and the built environment. In this project, we were asked to physical computing exercises with photon chip microcontrollers studies in simulation engine work flows and basic scripting for interaction and responsive systems. The concept of the Puppy Cube is providing a virtual Puppy experience to the people who do not have a real puppy. With different trigger condition, the cube will response to the master by sound, color, and motion with physically interactive systems.
