LOW-RES FIGURES This form study is in order to create minimal but non-primitive forms by stacking and glance cutting technique. Space Invaders will be built in three dimensions and used as a point of departure for this exercise. Boolean difference, union, and extrusions will be used to build up forms which may appear to be urban scale but are in fact architectural scale. Results will be used as containers at one scale and interior structure at another. All surfaces will remain planar, which, will allow for the construction of models using special coated paper and laser cutter. Later, this will also allow us to create large-scale models of interiors for staged Photography. Space Invader figures (1978)
Space Invader 3d figures
OBJECT AS CONTAINER Using the stacking and glance-cutting techques, the non-rhetorical figures are created. Different from the smooth, continues digital projects, the low-res objects are much easier to identified. The container itself is near-figural, meaning that they often include strong silhouettes and partially legible shapes nested inside of things. This studio deployed jacks, ziggurats, and other chunky, low-res forms in strange orientations and different scales, which helps maintain a loose formal affinity across the project.

BUILDING PROJECT World Trade Center architecture is notoriously preoccupied with the representation of free trade. In United States at the turn of the century, that representation was often tied to classical architecture, summetry, and stone. During the Kennedy era, classicism was traded in for heavy, anonymous boxes of the 1960s, of which the old Los Angeles World Trade Center is one. This new trade center will be a public/ private entity with both secured and unsecured facilities and it will host foreign dignitaries as well as local business leaders and politicians. Ground as Object The ground is not a continuity of the building but an articulated void. A hole can both obscuring the foot of the building on approach, and forcing entry at mid-level. The act of entry becomes a leap from one world into another.
Anti-gravity Space Unlike those vertical towers around the site, the new WTC has tilt transportation system, which allow people experience the building as a non-gravity space. Meanwhile the main vertical core is hidden in the poche.
Multiple Worlds There are three worlds in the new WTC, the atrium, which is continuous and has multiple direction objects. The grand hall, which has multiple opening oors and a giantic space. The poche which contains the major programs.

World Trade Centers Programs Analysis Through the analysis of the complex of four buildings in Lower Manhattan, we got the common proportion of different programs in world trade center. These proportions become the references for our project. Office, recreation, public area, mechanical space, retail and conference are the main programs in our project.

Multiple cut section In order to reveal the dramatic , strange, scaleless and non-gravity interior and the overall mass at the same time, the multiple cut section technique was applied. It shows the not only the relationship between different major parts of the building but also the relationship between the interior and the exterior. It’s a new way to explore the architecture.
Composite Materiality The envelope design is characterized by three interfering patterns: freeform seams, offset-like projections, and cross-grain panels. The offset-like patterns defy conventional standards of industrial production at building scale. What appear at first to be familiar metal panels on the exterior are in fact impossible to achieve in metal sheet due to their shape and size. Instead, composite super-panels are envisioned.
Construction Based on surface rather than vector structure, composite construction lends itself to puzzle-pieced and friction-fit supercomponents at large scale. Critical for the design of this prototype was to maximize surface continuity between components, yet still allow parts to be read as such, each with their own shape and life. Because of the lightweight construction method, the 1:1 scale of each supercomponent is 50’x50’, to be built in an aircraft hangar, and flown with sky-cranes to the construction site. Phisical Model
The Inhabitable Poche The project often deploy Liners that sometimes track with the exterior shell and sometimes deviate significantly to create contemporary poche. Unlike classical poche, which was literally made of solid masonry, contemporary poche is made of delaminated surfaces and creates inhabitable space. When drawn in plan, the black poche spaces of historical architectural representation disappear in favor of a multilayered envelope similar to an onion. Relates back to desire to have hidden spaces and deferral of interiority in new ways.
Interior Figures Each part in the ensemble is an agglomeration of a set of blocky, stepped bars and crystal figures, tightly shrinkwrapped in an outer container. These interstitial spaces are used for balconies or common spaces for the offices. Some crystals and bars breach the container and are sheared off, creating hybrid apertures on the facades. Sometimes this shearing produces a familiar scale of aperture that one associates with the human scale, but other times, it produces strange figures that reveal deep internal voids and scuttle the reading of the project as housing.

Section Perspective
Tattoos As opposed to meshes and panelization systems, which are everywhere, all the time on a building skin, a tattoo is an objectification of surface articulation. Tattoos are not ornament, in the sense that they do no hang off of architecture. They are also distinct from the supergraphics of Venturi, which float on the surface of architecture. Architectural tattoos are instead embedded in the building mass, without losing their elemental autonomy. They are clicked-in, over-molded onto or pressed into surfaces loosely, as if they might later be removed and examined as independent objects. Like tattoos on the body, architectural tattoos may sometimes track underlying form, but they often deviate from it to become free-form or figural. Instead of being subservient to edges or other formal inflections of the building mass, tattoos are patchy and discontinuous. tattoos derive not only from a new formal sensibility, but from the possibilities inherent in composite construction.Suddenly it is possible, and imperative, to rethink what constitutes surface articulation when the age of tectonic articulation based on bricks, sticks and panels is past. In composite monocoque construction, for instance, the site of the joint may no longer be the site of articulation; one may have nothing to do with the other. Joints and seams may be suppressed or emphasized or altogether faked for effect. Also, the sheer number of functional seams may be significantly reduced, pointing to the possibility of buildings made from massive interlocking chunks. As construction is de-coupled from the size of pieces ofmaterial a human can fabricate or carry and rethought in these terms, scale comes into question. Architecture can cease to register the human form and instead move toward strange, alien effects we can only begin to imagine.
BLACK BOX. MUTE ICON ld t eater reno ation
Disgn Studio III 2016.10 Instrucor Georgina Huljich Location Los Angeles, Calnifornia Construction Area 2 , SF Individual work
MUTE ICON Architecture seems at a significant crossroads nowadays. Haunted by vast processes taking place outside itself, since 9.11, the financial collapse, the exacerbation of global warming, cultural and sociopolitical developments such as the Arab Spring and Occupy, a new epoch of economic austerity, the often ill proclaimed but certainly perceived death of the icon era, the impulse for social responsibility, the celebration of practices of common sense and search for common ground: all point to a challenge to the most creative and projective aspects of both discipline and field, and certainly suggest a political realignment of its establishment. While context can’t be the only driver for architectural production or any form of artistic practice of cultural relevance, it is certainly an important factor to be considered and reckoned with.
Ledoux’s Spherical house
BLACK BOX The relation that the term black box’ has to questions of functional flexibility, atmospheric darkness and plain mystery, or the connotations that it entails to the most pure form of art are important aspects for the studio. ot in and of themselves, but especially if one looks at them from the perspective of a mute icon. Can a black box be a mute icon Can a mute icon be a black box Here we use the technique of projection cut to creat hundreds of objects to study the mute iconicity of objects, the profiles are extracted from the performance of an artist.
Form study of mute black box
DICHOTOMY Formal ambiguity and ambivalence of reading between interior and exterior will be mobilizing mechanisms to subvert notions of typological and aesthetic fixity. At the center of this is the idea of dichotomy, which implies that by combining opposites, contrasts could dissolve, be emphasized or rather become fuzzier, and the whole entering into a more complex state of dualism. Consequently, the studio will pursue dichotomies as a way to defy fixed notions of mass configuration.
SITE INTRODUCTION

The design project will consist of a redesign building for Royce Hall at UCLA in Los Angeles. The new university building will entail approximately a total of 00,000 square feet which will include the University Auditorium Royce Hall Auditorium , The Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA and the Royce Hall Terrace. The site and program themselves provide a remarkable canvas for investigation: the memory and history of the pre existing neoclassical building Royce Hall ; the physical and regulatory context of the university campus and the productive constraints of the program will allow us to pursue ideas of context beyond the known specificities of site, by understanding it as a larger cultural and a social framework from where projects can cultivate and construct new physical images.

THE EXTERIOR The project aims to produce an exterior mass that relies both on the performance, conformity and history of its immediate context at the same time that produces an icon. The result of the exterior mass is a combination of the historic bottom part with an new top part which remain some original openings and elements.

BUILDING IN CAMPUS Due to the site restriction, the original backstage entrance and the audiences entrance are remained. Although the wings and the tower of the old Royce hall are cut, but the symmetric of the front facade still remain the same to keep the campus axis visually and formally. The origin windows of the twin tower are kept on the new facade to remind people the existence of the twin towers. Some vertical elements of the old royce hall are kept and extend to the additional top part. At the corner, the old facade transit to the terrace and then to the top part. Every move is to make the new Royce hall looks like an integrated object where new and old coexist.

THE INTERIOR The vaults are the main elements in Lombard Romanesque style architecture, therefore, in this historic building renovation project we decided to manipulate the vault ---- one of the symbol of the Lombard Romanesque style ---- to achieve the coexist experience of the new and old Royce hall. The vaults are booleaned different by spheroid at tangent point to get new three dimensional curve extend from the old vault.

PROGRAMS AND CIRCULATION The major programs of the new Royce hall are the same as the old one. The east lobby, entrance hall, west lobby are fully connected in the new proposal so that the audiences from every section of the auditorium can reach the bar or leisure zone easily, and the people’s movement become one of the beautiful views of the new royce hall due to the grand, open hall. The old terrace is wrapped to be part of the building formally and has a stronger connection to the lobby due to the removal of the division walls. Backstage area is enlarged for more complex stage device and mechanic system

OBILIQUE DRAWING The way to make the obique drawing is to shear the model 45 degree, so that it can reveal the 1:1 porprotion section and plan at the same time. This will challenge ďŹ xed aesthetic notions of beauty and legibility in architectural representation and visualization, using abstraction and defamiliarization to speculate on the generation of withdrawn, irritant and engaging images.
BUILDING ON SITE Through the site section we can control the overall volume of the mass and the relationship between the opening, terrace and the compus building opposite to it. The new Royce hall remain the old symmetrical relationship between the front facade and the Powell Library meanwhile making the new Royce hall look as a whole to contain more complex programs.

SECTION / ELEVATION The section / elevation drawing reveals the relationship between the interior and the exterior mass. Some parts of the interior are the continuity of the exterior elements, and meanwhile the interior is a gigantic space with no fully division which is signiďŹ cantly dierent from the impression of the small historic openings of the old Royce hall.
NEW ORGANIZATION
The new plan totally change the old percetion of the original Royce hall. With the removal of most of the division wall of the old lobby, the open space with some original elements which are formly cut or manipulated, so that the old memory can live in the new design. The terra major part of the building and has a closer connection with the lobby. The grand stair provides a visible connection of dierent oor which old Royce hall, this produces the visual connection and make the new Royce hall interior a lot more remarkable.

DEMOLITION PLAN With the demolition plan, the relationship between the new and old is revealed. The additional parts of the old Royce hall is sliced and the division walls of the lobby are removed, meanwhile the arcade for the public is remained. The new volume of Royce hall looks more integrated and the interior is widely open.
SECTION The section shows the spacial relationship of the backstage, auditorium, lobby, and the arcade. Audiences on different floor have visual communication in the new Royce hall. Meanwhile, because of the additional part on top of the original Royce hall, the volume is enlarged and make the new auditorium have additional space for new stage devices and technology.
South- orth Section
NEW LOBBY The original second, third, and fourth floor are cut to create visual connection and bright, open spacial effect. Some elements like vaults, twin towers were kept but booleaned different by sphere or spheroid to create modern three dimensional curve. Therefore, brick, part of vaults can be seen in the new Royce hall to remind the audiences old Royce hall.
Phisical Model
The original three symmetrical entrances are booleaned dierent by spheroid or cut to give people a brand new feeling. The bottom part of the west vault entrances are removed to open the space to connect the west lobby and south lobby. The sky bridge is designed to conncent the auditorium and the twin towers where bar is located. Meanwhile it can make people witness the circulation on the second oor so that the image of the entrance hall become an vivid, three dimensional picture.

HAIZHUANG TEMPLE INTRODUCTION Haizhuang Temple is one of the four famous temples in Guangzhou city. It has close relationship with water and numbers of ancient trees. After 1950s,The centuries-old temple was used as a park because this area is extremely lack of leisure space. ow the temple needs extension to meet the needs of the Buddhism development but it also has to maintain its function as a park for the citizens.
NEW HAIZHUANG TEMPLE In the new planning, the ancient buildings, old trees and the arcades have to be reserved and the others can be demolished. There are four histroic buildings on the site, the memorial archway, the Heaven King hall, the Main hall and the Tower hall, which are the main factors to considered with in the new design. S ace of ow was applied to vague the coniction between traditional building form and the modern architecture form and express the Zen of Buddhism. Another major problem is the surrounding high-rise buildings would ruin the amosphere of the tranquil buddhism temple, therefore the circulation and vision control should be highly considered.

THE IMPORTANT CONSTRUCTIONS ON THE SITE Besides numbers of centuries-old trees and old traditional temples, there are some important constructions like the Pagodas and the histroic arcade need to be considered. The arcade is the most famous architectural style in uangzhou area, it has hundreds of years history and need to be combined with the new Haizhuang Temple and become the commercial area both for the citizens and visitors.

SITE ANALYSE The name Hai means Pearl River that near the site in Chinese. Therefore, water is extremely important in Haizhuang Temple design both in histroy and nowadays. Besides, the development of the high-rise residential buildings bring hugh problems to the site, they destoied the skyline of the old temple. Visitor, especially the Buddhism believers don’t want to see the high-rise when they having the worship ceremony. Meanwhile, due to the expansion, another entrance and underground parking would be added and the location and circulation are very important.
High-rises The site is surrounded by several high-rises which should not be seen in the traditional temple. Sight analysis would be the major tools in the design.
Public space Except the roadsides, this area is extremely lack of public space. The citizens need a park.
Road network This site is surrounded by a stem road and two secondary main roads. Therefore the new parking entrance should be opened to the stem road for the great traffic flow.
HAIZHUANG TEMPLE IN HISTROY It’s very important to know what haizhuang temple looked like in histroy and the best way to know it is by the texts and drawings. Through them we knew that the front gate was really closed to the dock and water was channeled to the temple to create two sight spots. Besides, there were six more totally eight famous sight spots in old Haizhuang temple which are one of the restoration goals. Another imteresting thing we can find in that old drawing is the layout of the ancient temple ---- all the buildings were southward and lied interdigitatingly, and it gave us the idea of using space of flows to organise the new Haizhuang Temple. Old Haizhuang Temple in 1800s
LAYOUT EVOLUTION With some important historic buildings on site, the new expansion should give full respect to the ancient axis formally, geographically and visually. Beside, a new circulation for the non-buddhism visitors should be considered. So the boundary between the Buddhism and non-buddhism area becomes very important.
SPACE OF FLOWS AND CHINESE TRADITIONAL LAYOUT The height of the new construction is seriously considered based on the FAR calculation and in the respect of the old traditional temples. Meanwhile, the research of the non-stop city and traditional Chinese architecture groups brought us the idea of the new organisation of the new temple. The modern Eight Sceneries are no longer in individual section but distribute in the semi-open area in the park. Total area 44000㎡ / FAR 0.

OLD TREES IN THE TEMPLE There are many old trees which are hundreds years old. They can provided the dense canopy which make people feel tranquil in the temple. However, the trees are randomly grew and have great impact on the distributions of the buildings. So we are thinking of using the walls and buildings to divide the trees into several groups. By that ways, the trees combined with constructions can create different styles of spaces.

FUNCTIONS AND CIRCULATIONS
There are four kinds of people who will use this site--monks,pilgrims,leisure crowd and vegetarians. Monks live in the temple and shou therefore the monk living area is near the temple area and divided by a partion wall. The main temple area is on the second floor whic the ground public park. Pilgrims’ purpose is to worship the god and experience the Buddhism culture while the leisure crowd who migh believes just need to have a rest in the park. POINT-LINE-SURFACE Inspired by the Parc de la Villette designed by Bernard Tschumi, the new planning of Haizhuang Temple can be also break up into point, line and surface and they are treated differently. Point
Trees, Pagodas and buddhism tower are treated as points. They spread out in differnt space and some of the unique point become the visual focus of the space.
Line All the new constructions including walls, gallery and exhibition halls can be viewed as lines. They dividing different sections and forming different paths in the park.

SCENERY LAYOUT There are many ways to deal with the garden landscape in ancient China and it’s really interesting to interpret them in modern way. Chinese garden is essentially aimed at organizing an environment rich in temperament and interest and full of the beauty of artistic conception through the four gardening elements, including mountains, rivers, structures and plants, as well as other components such as roads and interior settings.

THE NEW ARCADE --Pazhou urban design

NEW CBD Pazhou island is located in Guangzhou and it means a brand new CBD of Internet innovation is on the horizon. According to Cheng Jianhua, uangzhou mayor, hujiang ew Town is uangzhou’s CBD V1.0, Financial City is V .0, Pazhou is V .5. A brand new concept was born in this project -- cluster for headquarters of financial innovation of science and technology. The Internet innovation cluster has attracted many renowned electrical business magnates, such as Alibaba, Tencent, Fosun roup, Vipshop, MIUI and so on. The promising CBD in Pazhou will lead the upgrading of uangzhou’s economy. Pazhou island covers an area of about 10 square kilometers, divided into the western zone, middle 1 zone , the middle zone and the eastern zone. According to the plan, it will become an open Headquarter Commerce District with Lingnan charm.
THE EASTERN ZONE Our site is located at middle zone. As the e-commerce area, the eastern zone will focus on office buildings, exhibition, hotels and entertainment facilities. According to the city planning documents and reports, most of the Chinese biggest internet companys’ headquarters will move to this area and create a lot of working oppotunities. The main street of the eastern zone will be designed as a Linnan arcade (Linnan area architecture style) street to show the history and culture of Linnan area. Our goal in this semester is to design the locations and the volume of the buildings in this area based of the upper level planning, and combine with the Linnan arcade street to make the whole area a 4/7 livable city instead of an ghost city like some CBD in Shenzhen or Shanghai which only a few people live in this area in the evening. There are two major themes we need to consider, the first thing is how to put the historic components of ilou (Linnan arcade) in to the 1st century modern business street design to have a histoic but modern feel ing design; the second thing is the application of the low-impact sustainable architecture, we want to put those low-impact design standard into the city design instruction to explore the possibility of the low-impact city planning design.
Master plan of the eastern zone
STREET STRUCTURE We design two sport theme park and small square at the end of east and west as the visual restriction of the Linnan arcade street and attract the people from the surrounding area. The sport theme park in the east is a transfer space for those bicyclers, and the food court in the west provides delicious food and quiet environment for the pedestrains in this area.
LINNAN ARCADE At the beginning of the twentieth century, when the city government began to widen the roads, this 18th century western architectural style was blended with the traditional Cantonese construction features, thus giving birth to the unique ilou buildings. Most of the ilou buildings in uangzhou are three or four storied, with a protruding structure, or arcade, stretching above from the second storey over the sidewalk. These arcades are linked together by the side of the street, forming a shaded corridor, which keeps the shops along the sidewalk as well as the pedestrians safe from the scorching sun and rain.

Slow traďŹƒc grey space
NEW LINNAN ARCADE ilou buildings, which are suitable for the unpredictable sub-tropical climate in Lingnan areas, and which also provides great convenience for the local people, once was the main form of architectural style in uangzhou. But in order to survive in the modern city environment, some features needed to be added or improved. Like the weak connection between the first floor and seond floor, the grey space upstair, the spacial node for people to stay or rest, the atrium and green space, etc.
Though representing a blend of Chinese and western architectural styles, ilou building in uangzhou, which are used for both commercial and residential purposes, usually have a western-style front. The designers of the ilou Buildings, rather than professional architects, were but common artisans. Faced with western buildings, they paid more attention to the outside decorations instead of the structure and layout. With their rich experience, they made some imitations according to their own understanding, adopting kind of liberal attitude. Their creative imitation and bold reform worked out the characteristic ilou buildings of different styles.
The upstairs were used for housing and storage for the shop owners in the old time while they can be any functions nowadays.
The shaded corridor can keeps the shops along the sidewalk as well as the pedestrians safe from the scorching sun and rain.
The old arcade was lack of green space which is very important for the walking and shopping experience.
Parts of the upstair and parts of the interior can be revealed to the pedestrians to attract them to go inside.
THE CONFLICTION The new Linnan arcade street needs to have many new functions that the old one didn’t have, like the gallery, supermarket, resturant, shopping mall, etc. Based on the analysis, what we can abstract from the ancient arcade architecture is the facade feeling and the grey space. The interior space can be open up and become very flexible for any functions and activities.

The change of the depth of the arcade grey space is very important in our design. Due to a large amount of people work and live in this area, the roads will be much more wider and the original -meter arcade is obviously not enough for the new CBD. The increase of the depth will bring more possibilities of the grey space design, it might give space for vertical connection design or shaded semi outdoor activities like cafe happen under the corridor while not interrupting the traffic. ARCADE DESIGN ATTEMPT Based on the previous analysis of the Linnan arcade, we design the new arcade in some major aspects: front facade, corridor space, set back area, second floor network, atrium and green space area. We choose one block to be the design attempt and polularize those design experience to other parts of the arcade street.
The imagination of the new arcade street
1. rey space on the ground floor: Changing rhythm on the ground floor height, vision interaction on different floor, space hint of the interior garden on the street. .Corridor and nodes: seats along the street under the corridor, different enclosure of the space, the shadows produced by the corridors change over times giving the pedestrain differnet experience.

THREE-DIMENSIONAL WALKING SYSTEM The upstairs were used for housing and storage for the shop owners in the old time while they can be any functions nowadays. But like most of the commercial area the upstair area is always at low visitors flow rate. The railway system in uangzhou give us a good example to activate the space with a good walking system. Here, we tried to bring up the three dimensional walking system to solve the upstair low visitors flow rate problem and make people more willing to explore the city.
Accessiblity: in the old planning, each block was seperated by roads, the commercial area on the ground didn’t connect to a whole, and the bicycle system was not well-connected either.
Activate upstairs: The second floor network system can connect the shops and different programs upstairs to create a upstair commercial area.
4/7 walking system: The weather of uangzhou is always changing. Sky corridor system can make people move around this area on different levels all day long and safe.
City landscape: The sky corridor system provide the space for the vertical landscape and make the whole area not look like a forest of concrete and glass.
The sky corridor system connects every blcok in this area. With differnet widths and platforms, the sky walking experiences can be really interesting. Like the highline project in ew ork City, we want this project to spur real estate development in the neighborhoods that lie along the line, and increase real estate values and prices along the route, as a halo effect .

THE CUBE In order to further develop the sky corridor system, we come up with space capsule system to solve the vertical connection problem. When it combines with some municipal functions, it can be a symbolic landmark in this area.
The evolution of the cube
1. the building is used to connect the ground and underground.
. sky corridor is added to increase the accessbility of the upstairs.
3.building as the main core while the sky corridor is just an attachment.
4.Transform the sky corridor as an system, building become an attachment, like the space capsule.
5.The system need it s own core to allow the vertical movement.
6.Core connect second floor, ground floor and underground.
7.try to combine with the municipal facilities, the cube become the basic facilities of the site
8.try to combine with the garden and bicycle parking for citizens.
9.minimize the space, combine with daily function like charging, drinking fountain, umbrella renting, wifi
MINIMUM SCALE All the unit’s scale are designed as minimum scale of it’s function with module. The module makes it very easy to combine different units while constructed. Different combinations can fit different site with different need.
COMBINATIONS There are two major parts of the Cube. The first part is the core module which appear in every Cube, it contents stair, elevator and smart wall which has wifi, charging and other daily needed functions. The second part is the additional module which can fit different situation.
core module stair,elevator,smart wall
additional module munciple service, bicycle parking, public restroom
The Cube is very flexible on different site. While along the arcade, it can be linear, while on the plaza, park or a space node, it can be a cube with some daily necessary functions for the citizens and activate this area. Due to it’s modulize design, it can be shipped and constructed very easily and add or change function according to the city development. Arcade interface

DESIGN GUIDELINE After those attempts, we made the guideline to have an overall design control of the whole area including landscape, location of the major public space, building base area, building interface locations and so on. With the guideline control we can polularize our design to the whole area and get a fully control of the experience. Road center Site boundary Building setback Ground inner street Sky corridor control line Construction area Tower area Bicycle path Sport theme park Public greenbelt Courtyard 8-Meter arcade 6-Meter arcade Main entrance Landscape node Setback distance Height restriction Cube location Coordinate
GROUND FLOOR Beside the trees along the road, we also create a lot of interior path in different blocks to increase the accessibility of every public space. People no longer have a fixed path that move around the block but instead, they can go across the block and take a short cut to whereever they want, it’s also a fun way to explore the city. Atriums, countyard, plaza, inner streets, there are so many public space to hang out and we believe those space can activate the entire area.
SECOND FLOOR The second floor is mainly the buildings and the sky corridor system with some landscape on it. People can move from one building to another without crossing the road but just from the sky corridor, we want this sky corridor system to spur real estate development in the neighborhoods that lie along the line, and increase real estate values and prices along the route, as a halo effect . And also increase the accessibility of the upstairs area.
STREET NORTH Street north doesn’t have a continous interface but a grand central park in the middle. It’s like a blackhole, gathering people from the surrounding area to the middle with some beautiful landscape, trees and water. Meanwhile, the wonderful central park is also the beautiful views for those people working or living in the high-rise building and a good place to hang out.
In the center is a grand park for some huge events that will take place in this area.
Central park perspective
STREET SOUTH Dierent from the street north, the south interface is align a relatively similar. It can create a continously arcade walking experience for the pedestrains while some countyards are hidden inside the annex building. Two towers in the middle are placed back to create a open vision in the center responding to the set back towers on the north. South section
Trees and sunshade are required to be add in the guideline to provide shaded space for the pedestrains.
THE CORRIDOR With the shade, many outdoor activities can happen during the buring sun of guangzhou. Due to the height of the ceiling of the corridor, sunshade needed to be added to block the sunshine from entering the fronter area.
WEST STREET The sunken plaza provide a quiet outdoor space that is seperated from the noise traďŹƒc. Like Rockerfeller center sunken plaza, it can gather the people from surrounding area and it’s also a perfect spacial connection between the underground concourse and the ground shopping area. West street sectional perspective
Due to the set back, it can allow more activities happen on the street. The side walk is divided into three parts: green belt, bicycle path and pedestrain path. reen belt seperate the high speed bicycle from the pedestrain and provide the views for the pedestrains, and cafe, food trunk can appear on the pedestrain area to provide convience for the citizens.
West street perspective
EAST STREET The east street is divided into different sections. Sky corridor provides different levels and different experience to the city and give visual interaction to the street level. While the Linnan arcade in this area have the eight meters set back to give public space for the city to allow different activities like food truck, kiosks east street perspective
SKY CORRIDOR Like Highline, the sky corridor has rich landscape the facilities for pedestrains to rest and enjoy the city views under the shade.

MIDDLE STREET Through the opening of the building on the left, it reveals the spacial relationship between the courtyard and the street. The garden become a space node for pedestrains to rest or just a beautiful views on the street. The multiple activities happen on the corridor area enrich the city daily life. middle street perspective

SITE INTRODUCTION The site is located at Foshan Donghua Village,a small village full of traditional bamboo houses. The original ancetor hall had been demolished because of the exploitation of real estate. We found this problem and try to desgin a worship space for the villgers to compensate for the lack of spiritual space.
In this area, most of the buildings are built within a small unit. Our site is a combination of three units which provide enough space for the villagers to come and worship their ancesters. In order to respect the context, we divide the facade into three part to fit the proportion of the street facade. Meanwhile, the major daylighting of this project is from above, not only providing the holy experience but also the privacy of the ancester which is extremely important in Chinese culture. They don’t want to be disturbed by people

THE CUSTOM The custom of burning paper offerings for ancestors has a very long history. Most of the Chinese believe that their ancestors will live in another world after their death which means they still have the same requirement as the living people.Their ancestors can get the offerings by burning paper-made items.Although this behavior is kind of superstitions however it has become a deep-rooted customs after all these years. Before, people sacrifice their ancestors in ancetor halls ,the family gather together during significant festivals. However, with the developing of the city, most of the ancester halls have been pulled down in recent 0 years so people got no specific place to worship their ancesters.During the festivals, families in urban cities choose to burn paper at their home,on the street ,beside the river and even in urban green space. Such behavior can lead to serious consequences especially the fire accidents . So,here comes the question, how can we make balance between the spiritual need of the people with the consequence might caught of burning paper money

THE NEW SACRIFICE SPACE We choose the site in a historical street where the people living there still continues the customs so they have urgent need for a new sacrifice space.Concentrating the sacrifice space in one single building is the most efficient way to solve the existing problems . The new buiding should merging into the street harmoniously.
GENERATION OF THE PRAY WELL Considering the best way to solve problem of smoke and dirt ,we designed a chimney shape like structure to draft the smoke out by the c imney e ect----when people burning offering under the chimney, the difference of temperature between in inner and outer space makes the hot air and smoke exhausted from the chimney which can perfectly keep the inner space clean and cool.
Besides, the shape of the chimney is determined not only by the season wind but also the solar altitudes on iming and hongyuan Festival, which is the most significant day to worship ancestors. The light shed into the space is calculated to create a sacred atmosphere. We can find this kind of architectures all around the world, like the pantheon. Similar to it,the oculus at the chimney’s apex and brick facade are the only natural sources of light in the interior. Throughout the day, the light from the oculus moves around this space in a reverse sundial effect. The oculus also serves as a cooling and ventilation method.
CALCULATION & SHAPE Since the custom is popular nationwide, we choose four different cities in China to analyse the universality of our design. The different longitudes and latitudes which determined the solar altitudes ,the direction of the monsoon and the different height all have influence to determine the shape of the pray well. The following is the different shapes of the pray well calculated all the relevant factors.

PHYSICAL AND ATMOSPHERE PERCEPTION To step further, we made physical model both of the entirety and one of the section. The space should be integrated with physical environment ,material and human intervention, with the physical model we can simulate the real environment of the building. The section above stimulate the changing light environment during a year, each of them shows the light environment on one of the most signi cant festi al to worship the ancestors.
Partner Production The roof of the building serves as community park as well.People gather here to enjoy their peaceful moment.

PLANS LAYOUT We use the 1x1 gridding to generate and control the plan. The three dierent sizes pray wells are inserted randomly according to the gridding which make the space mysterious and facsinating with the unpredictable shedding light from the sky. When people standing right beneath the pray well and look up ,the light becomes the medium to have a peaceful conversation with their ancestors.

A STAGE FOR PERFORMANCERS WHO HAVE DREAMS
There are numbers of buskers in the world. Some of them perform just for fun, some of them do this for living. But some people perform on the public to chase their dreams. They have brilliant skills and eager to become a music star. What they need is just a stage. To design a stage for the buskers,we notice a phenomenon that the water can re ect t e sunlig t to the bottom of the bridge. With the water fluctuate, the patterns of the water wa es on the concrete change too. That beautiful views make me think that if the water’s fluctuation is determined by the ibration of the sound, the patterns can be changed with the music rhythm. This stage effect do not need any money to realize but just sunlight and water.

REFERENCE THEORY Cymatics is a kind of phenomenon that mixed two kinds of sense together --- sound and visual. Sound wave can make the water shake, so that we can see the sound. Thomas Mclntosh did even further experiment. He added light to the shaking water surface, then the light is also shinning with the sound. The sound is like covalent bond . Water and light are like two relative stable helix.

THE DILEMMA OF THE BUSKERS The biggest problem buskers faced is the weather.During the rainy day, people would not stay outside and the performance will be have no audiences.Besides, the instruments can not exposed in the rain.So that a shelter in the public place will help them perform anytime. Also it provide a shelter for the pedestrians to rest during the rainy day.
Another problem is that it is almost impossible for them to have stage effect to enhance their performance.A fantastic stage effect can not only attract the pedestrians to watch their performance but also increase the exposure rate in the social media and make them famous.
SECTION OF DAYTIME WATER REFLECTION The section shows the operating principle of the performance center. The performance produces sounds and vibration which will create the patterns on the water through the equipments. And the water reflects the sunlight to the projection curtain. It’s almost a zero cost fantastic stage effect

SIMULATION OF CONSTRUCTION Physical model can help us judge if the structure we choose is working and think about the detail design. We used wood and clothes instead of steel and membrane to test the stability of the structure. Besides,we tensioning the clothes to simulate the tension to make the clothes looked like the membrane.
SIMULATION OF STAGE EFFECT Moreover,we used the organic glasses as the water container and dropped some water on it’s surface, then we knocked the glasses to make the water shaking while place lights under the glasses. To our surprise, the water waves were reflected on the roof It proved that if we have some equipments to deliver the vibrations which is huge enough to the water, the beautiful stage effect can be seen
