History of Syracuse 1 GEDDES
Syracuse flourished in the past with the help of new infrastructure such as the Erie Canal and the implementation of the railroad. However, it is the infrastructure that led to its downfall: with I-81 being built, it divided the heart of Syracuse’s Central Business District and led to its decline. Syracuse is still making efforts to revitalize the city. Perhaps by focusing on the central nodes of the city, it may bring back its former glory.

BUILDING ANALYSIS
John Ronan 2011 Chicago, IL
As described by John Ronan, the Poetry Foundation “is conceived as a series of layers that visitors move through and between. Layers of zinc, glass, and wood peel back like pages of a book to define various programmatic zones.” Therefore, based on the architect’s statement and our further exploration, different layers of façade define different privacy zones. However, the zones are defined not only by each material’s characteristic but also are defined by the structures, feelings, and functions of the respective materials.

BUILDING DESIGN This building uses different zones to define public, semi-public, and private spaces in two directions: horizontally (the screen, building, and backyard), and vertically (glass box, stair room, archive). It also creates an angle that reflects S. Warren St. To emphasis the angle and the view, the interior of the building uses columns, and the interior and exterior wall’s shapes indicate the view to the courtyard.
