Involvement in this project ranged leading the project from concept design right throught to construction documentation. As Steelcase Mexico needed to move offices within the space of 4 months, the condensed project time provided many challenges. The project was co-ordinated from the Steelcase general offices in Grand Rapids MI with weekly telepresence calls conducted from Mexico City. Also involved was the management in English and Spanish of all the subcontractors such as Henrybuilt kitchens in New York, Alpha Hardin, Luzen Arquitectos and various others. Conceptually the project looks to recreate the “Mexican neighorhood street” in the 17th floor of Virreyes Tower in order to give the project a familiar reference for employees and clients alike. Unlike other hi-tech Steelcase offices all over the world, this Mexico City edition looked to incorporate human scale, movement and appreciation of natural materiality and tones. Steelcase’s moto of “love how you work” was still upheld with their trademark “Workcafe” and respite areas providing alternatives forms of working.

Planta de Asfalto Development Location: Ajusco, Mexico City, Mexico Role: Concept design, 3D modelling, rendering

Located in an abandoned quarry in Mexico City, this mammoth project includes 9 commercial towers and over 20 apartment blocks (approx 15 stories each). By utilizing the existing terrain, we were able to easily incorporate up to 6 car parking levels across the whole site as well as allowing the fractured earth to form amphitheatres, parks and pedestrian thoroughfares. On an infrastructural scale, the project incorporates various forms of public transport such as bus services, shuttles, metro (underground rail) as well as facilitating for large logistics trucks. Seen as a model mini-city in the south of Federal District of Mexico, construction is set to get underway in mid-2015.

Various residential urban planning projects Location: Mexico City + Guadalajara + Merida, Mexico Role: Concept design, 3D modelling, rendering

Over various months, numerous large scale developments were worked on, primarily in the concept phase. These residential projects of up to 12 stories looked to respect human scale, whilst respecting the developer’s need for maximum m2. Quality public spaces were incorporated where possible for attractive gathering and socialising spaces. The entry gate to the residential complex in the southern city of Merida was an initial opportunity to prove rendering skills. The project was later taken through to construction drawings with site work beginning late 2014.

Located in the heart of Mexico City, this metro (underground) concept project had the job of integrating new office towers into a mixed use context comprising of residential apartments, industrial quarters and low rise commercial. The existing market place at street level was remodelled and topped with a big public draw card: a large green plaza featuring restaurants and retail shops. The towers themselves feature deep louvres and roof gardens to complete an attractive, sustainable design.

Martin Carrera, one of Mexico City’s largest public transport hubs offered an opportunity to regenerate a shabby part of town. The convergence of Cetram (bus services) and 2 metro (underground) lines posed a difficult logistical challenge in the distribution and transition of the thousands of daily users. Extensive investigations into the flow of commuters and influences from the surrounding context generated a large public plaza over the street level bus terminal. This plaza features a range of activities from gathering spaces and football pitches to small retail stores in order to draw the public.

The initial studies eventually led to further explorations into how the plaza and the proposed commercial + retail towers could be configured. Various studies into metabolic and parametrical forms were conducted in order to find the optimal forms satisfying commuter movement, sun exposure, rentable space, spacial qualities etc. The final solution featured seven towers of incremental height on the raised plaza which tapered off into the surrounding context for horizontal access whilst voids in the plaza provided vertical access points right down to the metro levels

Vista del Valle Marnhos housing development Location: Role:

The competition for a new Marnhos housing development in the north of Mexico City called for an incredibly dense configuration due to increasing demand for residential influx in this city sector. In order to avoid a homogenous design we once again looked into metabolic principles. By providing 4 types of apartments which could interlock in different configurations, we were able to create a richly textured facade composition. The protrusions and voids generated by the seemingly random stacking allowed for patios and roof gardens to the scattered all over the development, providing a familiar cornerstone of Mexican urban fabric; outdoor entertainment.

In yet another concept project for the remodelling of a busy transport hub, this project took the on the idea of velocity to shape the development. The surrounding highways, metro lines and squeezed site confines generated a horizontally stretched form which bent with the shape of the site. We could once again employ raised public terraces over the bus terminals as means of attracting members of the public and proving access to commercial sections of the project. Much like airport terminals, public access bridges extended into surrounding neighborhoods in order to provide viable pedestrian accessibility.

El Centro de Vinculación San Pablo propone una conexión con la catedral y el zócalo de Oaxaca a través de un circuito cultural donde se favorezca, tanto al peatón, como a los medios de transporte no motorizados.

Las proporciones de la fachada responden directamente a las mismas en construcciones circundantes. Logrando así una óptima integración dentro del contexto central de Oaxaca además de reducir la altura pre existente a una más homogénea de 7.20 metros de altura.

Tanto el sótano como los tres volúmenes superiores responden a esquemas de espacio abierto que permiten una flexibilidad excepcional para albergar diversos tipos de actividades que ampliarán la oferta cultural de la Universidad.

El esquema permite la dualidad de permanencia y transición entre espacios cubiertos y abiertos sin perder la naturaleza de ser un complejo en su totalidad.

La inclusión de áreas arboladas en el complejo permiten la aparición de micro climas que ayudan a regular la temperatura en el interior.

Tanto en la galería de exposición superior, como en los talleres se utilizan materiales que permitan tanto la transparencia como la incidencia de luz y ventilación naturales.

La multiplicidad de patios responde a una ventilación pasiva que permita la circulación del aire a través del centro cultural.

La naturaleza del terreno permite que, conceptualmente, el volumen del sótano pre existente sea elevado hasta una planta superior para generar una plaza pública, hundida en su parte media que favorezca diversos tipos de actividades tanto culturales como sociales; haciendo una referencia al juego de pelota.

Además de la sensibilidad tectónica, es evidente que los sistemas constructivos tradicionales son los predominantes en el edificio, así como el uso de materiales y técnicas típicas de la región.

Supresión de rampas en el esquema del edificio para lograr una mayor claridad de recorridos. Proposición de integrar un montacargas para el montaje de exposiciones y servicio de los talleres superiores además de tener la opción de servir a personas vulnerables.

Su fachada es permeable por ambos frentes desde la calle. Para controlar el acceso se propone un sistema de cerramiento compuesto de puertas metálicas.

La disposición del terreno permite un acomodo programático que responde a un filtro entre lo público y lo privado.

Celdas fotovoltáicas en cubiertas para contemplar el gasto energético tanto en iluminación como en montacargas.

En la parte privada se propone la inclusión de una residencia para artistas locales y extranjeros con cuatro habitaciones y áreas comunales de estar. El espacio formado entre lo público y lo privado albergará tanto oficina del Rector y director así como una pequeña terraza para albergar reuniones más casuales.

La proporción de vanos y macizos de la pre existencia derivaron en una retícula articuladora para la definición proporcionada de cada elemento programático que constituye al edificio.

El automóvil no es suprimido de esta dinámica; se pretende que su uso quede, preferentemente, ligado a las calles cercanas al perímetro central en donde puede ser estacionado para después optar por un medio de transporte no motorizado. El proyecto propone extender el alcance de la banqueta peatonal al permitir la permeabilidad del espacio público hacia el interior del recinto.

The sunken courtyard provided the conceptual driver to this competition entry which eventually won second prize. The University of Oaxaca requested a new cultural centre for social events, community activities and exhibition to be housed in an existing faculty in the historical city center. By dropping a large courtyard below suspended volumes we successfully negotiated the most difficult condition of the brief; an auditorium for 200 people.

Intensive analyses of the how the spaces might configure, allowed us to not only incorporate all the programmatic activities but also temporary residences for artists. We took careful consideration of the surrounding context through the control of scale in the streetside facade as well as its limestone materiality. Sustainable control of the internal environments of the enclosed spaces was achieved through passive means whilst also harvesting solar energy and rainwater.

Escenario Auditorio Patio

Upon the death of its most celebrated artist, the town of Cuernavaca commissioned a competition to house Juan Soriano’s works. Our concept looked at creating a range of architectural experiences to accommodate the artworks. As most are massive sculptures, the subterranean approach formed as a way not only approaching the site, but also allowed various vantage points to appreciate the artworks. An abundance of additional programmes were also incorporated such as a lecture theatre, bookstore and a community participation centre.

Empathetic Kinaesthesia _ Sport within Architecture Unitec, New Zealand Grade: Hochschule Wismar, Germany Grade:

“Where crowds gather, history is made.” Spiro Kostof Sport has been part of human life throughout recorded history, shaped by architecture since ancient times. How is this still relevant today as we strive towards future ‘sporting legacy’? This project looks at the impact of a proposed global sporting event in Auckland in a masterplanning exploration, after which a particular stadium is chosen for further development in terms of legacy transformation and spatial/structural articulation. The latter part of the project seeks to incorporate theories of kinaesthetic movement resulting in empathetic experiences for all users of the sporting venue which reacts to its function, site and legacy.

Devonport Library Location: Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand Role: 3D modelling, concept design

The competition for a new library in historic Devonport primarily called for design which respected the contextual heritage, whilst advertising itself toward the Hauraki Gulf in the south-west. This was achieved by incorporating Victorian lace patterning in the precast panels on the first floor which follow the proportions of the facades across the street. The colour palette resembles the local sand, surf and park environment. A “fish-scale” facade towards the park takes on the concept of shimmering water whilst allowing upper level ventilation.

Aotea Centre Foyers Location: Auckland CBD, New Zealand Role: 3D modelling, concept design, rendering

After completing the renovation of the ASB Theatre (largest in the country), our office was asked to refurbish the existing foyers directly adjacent to the theatre. The foyers, arranged into 5 split levels offered an interesting design challenge that called for some floors to be treated individually whilst others were linked through large feature walls which wrapped up the back of the main stair and up over to form a dynamic ceiling. Integrated furniture included new bars as well the “lava columns” which allow one to lean on and rest drinks on a shelf wrapping around the existing columns.

Piha Changing Rooms Location: Piha Beach, New Zealand Role: 3D modelling, concept design, rendering

Piha, Auckland’s famous surf beach, required a new changing room block to serve both the camp ground as well as the new cafe whilst keeping the functions separate. The resulting design respects this dilemma by having a split level set up by a large precast concrete panel wall which features wave patterning. The wave metaphor is continued with the undulating louvre screens and curved planting mounds. The building sits comfortably in its ‘rough’ west coast location with the colour palette reflecting the red pohutukawa tree blossoms and Piha’s black sand beach.

Onemana Bach _ Studio 19 Unitec, New Zealand Grade: A A+ A

Collaboration with Strachan Group Architects, John Cocks and Marshall Cook. Located in the coastal town of Onemana this small project is more than meets the eye. Whilst it was small in both budget and footprint, clever thinking and innovative solutions have produced a bach which ticks all the boxes; the clients “couldn’t be happier.” They did not want a large, elaborate beach house, nor would their budget allow; they wanted a well designed, compact, stylish yet simple easy care place to go with their two girls. With a total footprint of only 100m2 (75m² interior + 25m² decks) Onemana bach offers a master bedroom with private deck, bunkroom, bathroom/ laundry with both interior and exterior access, kitchen, living, dining with decks to both the east and west and built in furniture and storage throughout. A number of design decisions have elevated a simple building to a project which is full of interest and rich in character; a key move is the timber slatted breezeway which penetrates the high performance thermal envelope, running north east - south west, this assists the natural cross ventilation and highlights the play of light with the late afternoon sun filtering through the trees and timber slatting. The building also includes a take on traditional board and batten, offering rhythm and relief; a double floor step work with the natural contours of the site and the monopitch roof which wraps the building to the south; the north eastern corner hovers above the slope with large timber doors peeling back to open the corner; and the material palette is locally sourced, boasting timber throughout including decking inside and out, slatted ceilings and privacy screens and plywood on both walls and ceilings. NZIA LOCAL AWARD WINNER 2011 -SMALL PROJECT ARCHITECTURE “Adventurous clients have benefitted from a programme set up to teach Unitec architecture students practical skills. Student teams designed and built the elegant, two-bedroom bach on campus, and then assembled it on the site for which it was intended. A success in itself, the project has also provided the participating students with a valuable introduction to New Zealand’s timber design and construction tradition.” Jury Citation Nominated (top 5 in New Zealand) for NZIA AWARD 2011 - RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE - HOUSE

MOTAT _ The Walsh Brothers Hangar Unitec, New Zealand Grade:

The new extension of the existing hangar at MOTAT in Auckland looked at creating a contradiction between itself and the existing hangar which can be described as dark and solemn, housing the war planes. The extension opposes this by having its structure draped by lightweight ETFE, housing the agricultural and luxury airtravel planes. Ramped viewing platforms culminating around a central exhibition area allow views to be appreciated in both hangars as one journeys from one to the other.

A Memorial for the Canterbury Earthquakes

How does one reflect upon a tragedy? It is not for one person to say, each of us deals with grief in our own separate ways. What is clear is that life goes on in a forward direction, so we need to come together as one in order to progress whilst reflecting on a moment frozen in time; a bridge is formed. The centerpieces of this concept are the pillars located on the northern bank which reflect ruptured earth. They, however, pay homage to the people, communities and organizations responsible for the rebuilding process. From international response teams down to groups such as the “Farmy Army”, all are permanently remembered as they are the ones that need to be thanked and have their names preserved.

Speaking of names, the victims shall of course never be faded memories. Their names are etched upon slabs on the largest pillar, a central white column stretching up the sky and folding into a ramp up to Oxford Terrace.
