__________________________________________________________________________
PERU ASSURES FIFTH PLACE IN RETALIATION VERSUS MEXICO HAVANA, Cuba, March 22, 2015 – Peruvian team defeated Mexico 27-25, 24-26, 20-25, 25-23, and 15-12 and assured the fifth place of the III Girls’ U18 Volleyball Pan Am Cup which will be closed today at the Coliseum of the Sports City. Two hours and 19 minutes lasted the fifth tie-breaker where both teams tallied 111 points. However, it resulted in the third victory by the South Americans with two losses one of them precisely against the Central Americans who finished with a 2-3 record of win-loss. The top scorer was, the Peruvian, Leslie Leyva (21), escorted by her team-mates Nicole Abreu and Maricarmen Geuerrero (both with 14). On the rivals’ side, Kathya García (17), Karla Mirelis
(16), Sirenia Gómez and Karina Flores (both with 12), and Alondra Amaro (10) got double digits. “More than revenge we have achieved to win a match versus ourselves. We started very well and also at the beginning of the second set, but from then on we did not respect our identity and we stopped playing our game. We have to thank the contribution of the substitutes who were essential to come from behind and recover the initiative. They controlled the ball and had much defence when facing situations which made impossible a good attack”, explained, Spaniard, Juan Diego García, coach of Peru. “It is good for the team as we want to increase the rivalry among the starting players and the substitutes to battle for the team membership to the U18 WCH as hard as possible”, sentenced. The captain, Nicole, indicated that “we entered with everything we had for the revenge, but just in the sets where we were really close point by point we were not able to define. Thus, we missed two sets and it was when we focused on the victory.” Cuban, Ricardo Naranjo, coach of Mexico, commented that “we have missed the fifth place, despite having played powerfully every set. However the fitness diminished as this team has had few days of work and it made us not to finish well at the final moments. Nevertheless it is a learning and we learn much more when we loss. The way to go through is beneficial and I do not leave happily, but satisfied with my team.” Captain, Karina regretted she was overconfident as they had already won over Peru in Pool A (3-2). “We smashed, but we did not get to win. Now the coaches already know our defects and virtues. We must keep on preparing really well to have a better team and a good world championship.”
CUBA WINS BRONZE OVER PUERTO RICO Cuban team won the bronze medal of the III U18 Girls’ Pan American Volleyball Cup after defeating Puerto Rico for second time, in this case, in straight sets 25-21, 25-22, and 25-16. At the Coliseum of the Sports City, the local girls added much joy to the qualification to the U18 WCH to be held in Peru in the upcoming August, after claiming the last available quota of NORCECA and South America when winning the Pool B. Heidy Casanova (16) was the top scorer of the match which lasted 71 minutes where her teammate Gretell Moreno contributed with 10 points. By the visiting team, the unique player who topped a double-digit tally was Dariana Hollingsworth (13). The home team coach, Tomás Fernández, commented that he decided not to train to analyze the match where Cuba won over the Puerto Ricans 3-1 in the preliminary phase of the Pool B. “On that very first day, we dominated them with real courage. Today both teams made many faults. I am not satisfied with my girls’ reception and defence, but they had already qualified for the U18 WCH. In this age-category, it is quite difficult to keep the concentration. However
they were able to recover in this match. Although the unity they have is not brought sometimes to the court when it is the strength of this generation, as well as the possibility which several of them have to play different positions.” The host captain, Aidachi Aguero, stated that “this medal is very significant for us. We have attained it with a lot of devotion and it is fruit of hard-working months which we will keep to have a good performance at U18 WCH.” Luis Ponce, coach of Puerto Rico, emphasized that “we did not get the most of it when Cuba did not show its top-level. On the contrary, we decreased ours and we allowed the rivals to recover. In the second set, we were on the lead up to the last part, but we lost a good opportunity and the Cubans came from behind. In the third set, my pupils also had a poor attitude. They did not show any winning desire. So, the winner was the team which did want to get it; precisely the host team of a country which organized an excellent tournament.” Their captain, Joscelyn Coronel, stated sadly that “we could not do a better job. We had some controversies among ourselves and it is not appropriate within a team. The six team-mates must be like one. Nevertheless for the next time we play with our heart. I would like to express the venue did a good work, as everybody gave us an excellent attention. It was a magnificent event.”
ARGENTINA AGAINST DOMINICAN IN FINAL OF U18 CUP HAVANA, Cuba, March 22, 2015 – Argentinean team won the III Girls’ U18 Pan Am Cup over Dominican 17-25, 25-21, 13-25, 25-23, and 15-8 on the final match at the Coliseum of the Sports City. The top scorers of this crucial clash decided in almost two hours were precisely from both teams, the South American María Corbalán and Natalia Martínez, both with 22. On the winning team, Anahí Tosi contributed with 10 points. By the Caribbean team, Massiel Matos (21) and Lisbeth Rosario(10) topped double digits. “I am very happy for having won over a much experienced rival, with much more fitness and everything. I think that in sports the winner is not always the strongest or fastest, but who does think is possible to achieve it. It was the difference today in a quiet emotional match which represents the first international triumph of this team. I hope this success helps to open new doors”, expressed Mauro Silvestre, South American coach. Their captain, Azul Benítez, visibly touched, expressed that “it was very important to be able to come from behind and win as it allowed us to get again the gold medal which our country won i 2011 at the I Continental Cup. We really defeated the Dominicans for our attitude and fighting spirit showed in the game when we needed it to.” Brazilian, Alexandre Ceccato, coach of Dominican Republic, praised his rivals. “Argentina served hard, and received and defended better than us. They are a great team. They deserve the gold medal. Everybody can spike. I am disappointed with my pupils as they are much more experienced. Among them there are some who have played in the U-23 category. So, they are who should have taken the Cup home.”
The Caribbean captain, Yokaty Pérez, recognized that “we started much unfocused. We had good sets, but others bad. At the end the winner was the team which better functioned. Nevertheless, it helps us as a new experience in view of the U18 World Championship.” After the medallists, Argentina (gold), Dominican Republic (silver) and Cuba (bronze), were Puerto Rico, Peru, Mexico Chile and Costa Rica. Standings in previous editions of this Continental Cup: 2011 (Tijuana): Argentina, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Peru, Puerto Rico, Chile, Costa Rica, and El Salvador 2013 (Guatemala): Brasil, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Guatemala.
