Cuba and Guatemala start Men’s U23 Pan Am Cup with victories GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, October 15, 2018. ‐ The event that starts the FIVB U23 Men’s World Championship qualification began successfully for favorite Cuba and host Guatemala at the Multisport Dome in Guatemala City. On day two of competition, Cuba (1‐0) faces Peru (0‐1), the host Guatemala (1‐0) meets Mexico and Nicaragua (0‐1) has the day off. Cuba 3, Nicaragua 0 Cuba swept Nicaragua 3‐0 (25‐17, 25‐14, 25‐13) in the opening match. Cuba took the lead in all three sets with a strong performance. Cuba’s powerful attackers managed a comfortable 16‐8 in set two, continuing strong also to lead 12‐4 in set three, moving ahead with dominant presence on the court. It was a roller‐coaster for the hosts that ended up earning their first victory in a thrilling close finish. Guatemala stormed over Peru in the first set, leading with comfortable 8‐1 and 16‐6 at both technical time‐outs. Peru’s reaction in the second was strong keeping Guatemala’s offense under control to even the scores. Guatemala bounced back in set three but Peru’s good serves put them in trouble. Guatemala led in spikes 52‐41, while Peru prevailed 4‐1 in aces. Both teams scored on 10 blocks. Guatemala scored on 33 opponent errors and handed out 27 points on unforced errors on their side. Wing spiker Carlos Lopez scored 27 points including 26 impressive kills leading his team in their debut victory, joined by wing spiker Wagner Chacon and middle blocker Edras Pineda with 13 points each. En la segunda jornada de competencia, Cuba (1‐0) enfrentará a Perú (0‐1), el anfitrión Guatemala (1‐0) se medirá con México y Nicaragua (0‐1) tiene el día libre. Cuba 3, Nicaragua 0 Cuba se impuso a Nicaragua 3‐0 (25‐17, 25‐14, 25‐13) en el primer juego. Cuba lideró en los tres sets con fuerza. El potente ataque de Cuba logró una cómoda ventaja de 16‐8 en el segundo set y así continuó en el tercero con ventaja 12‐4, hasta avanzar con su dominio en el cancha.
