Cuba Men’s U23 Pan Am champion, Roamy Alonso Most Valuable Player
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, October 20, 2018.‐ Cuba beat Mexico 3‐0 (25‐16, 25‐16, 25‐12) to win the fourth Men’s U23 Pan American title and middle blocker Roamy Alonso was named the Most Valuable Player at the Multisports Dome In Guatemala City. Cuba won their second Men’s U23 Pan American title undefeated and without losing a set after edging Mexico in straight sets at the event that started the FIVB 2021 World Championship qualification process. The champions dominated from start to finish with an outstanding performance, pretty tough to beat. Mexico adjusted their blocking better in set two evening the score 12‐12; still Cuba wasn’t in real danger. Cuba led in spikes 33‐23; they outblocked Mexico with a sizeable 15‐2 margin and 6‐1 advantage in aces. Cuba committed 18 unforced errors and Mexico a total of 21.
Middle blocker Jose Masso and opposite Miguel Gutierrez led Cuba with 10 points apiece, joined by captain Adrian Goide with 9 points. Mexico’s top scorers were wing spiker Miguel Sarabia with 7 points and opposite Diego Gonzalez with 6. Host Guatemala won the bronze medal to Nicaragua 3‐1 (28‐26, 27‐25, 22‐25, 25‐16), their first Pan American medal ever.

Bronze Medal Guatemala 3, Nicaragua 1 Host Guatemala won bronze medal to Nicaragua 3‐1 (28‐26, 27‐25, 22‐25, 25‐16). This is the first medal ever for Guatemala at Pan American level, after winning a tough duel to their Central American counterpart Nicaragua at the Multisports Dome in Guatemala City. A thrilling first set went to Guatemala as Nicaragua recovered from a four point deficit to even the scores 14‐14 and reach the dramatic 28‐26 not before the home guys missed three set points. The drama continued and both teams took turns to lead by two points thru out the second set, but Guatemala remained in the lead. The efforts from both sides went on in the third, Guatemala with Carlos Lopez and Wagner Chacon, but Nicaragua’s Denis Garcia and Jonny Zeledon extended the actions winning 25‐ 22. Guatemala celebrated the medal with comfortable 25‐16 finding better rhythm than Nicaragua. Despite Nicaragua’s huge 64‐47 margin in kills, Guatemala won scoring on 41 opponent errors while limiting to 22 their own errors. Guatemala held 11‐4 advantage in blocks and a slim 3‐ 2 margin in aces. Wing spiker Wagner Chacón led Guatemala with 23 points on 16 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces; while wing spiker Carlos Lopez scored 19 points and middle blocker Edras Pineda recorded 10 points. Nicaraguan Denis Garcia led all scorers with 29 points all on kills and Jonny Zeledon finished with 23 points. Esta es la primera vez que Guatemala gana una medalla a nivel Panamericano, luego de vencer en un duelo muy difícil a su contraparte centroamericana Nicaragua, en el Domo Polideportivo de la Ciudad de Guatemala. Un emocionante primer set fue para Guatemala tras que Nicaragua se recuperara de un déficit de cuatro puntos para empatar las acciones 14‐14 y un cierre dramático 28‐26 pero luego de que los locales perdieran tres puntos de set. El drama siguió y ambos lados tomaron turnos liderando por margen de dos puntos en el transcurso del segundo set, pero Guatemala se mantuvo arriba. Los esfuerzos de los dos equipos no cesaron en el tercero, Guatemala con Carlos López y Wagner Chacón, pero Denis García y Jonny Zeledon de Nicaragua extendieron las acciones ganando 25‐22. Guatemala creció encontrando un mejor ritmo que

Cuban Roamy Alonso the MVP at Men’s U23 Pan American Cup GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, October 20, 2018. ‐ Cuban Roamy Alonso named the Most Valuable Player MVP of the fourth Men’s U23 Pan American Cup that concluded on Saturday at the Multisports Dome of Guatemala City. Middle blocker Roamy Alonso received the recognition as Most Valuable Player after Cuba won undefeated the U23 Pan American Cup beating Mexico for their second title in the short history of the event. Alonso was joined by several teammates and other opponent players, whose outstanding individual performance was also recognized during the awarding ceremony chaired by the president of the Control Committee Felix Sabio. Cuban Osniel Melgarejo received the awards of best wing spiker and best server. Also from Cuba, Miguel Lopez was named the second best wing spiker, Miguel David Gutierrez the best opposite and Jose Masso the second middle blocker. Mexican Josue Lopez was awarded the best middle blocker and Nicaraguan Miguel Castillo the best digger. Jhonathan Nakamatsu of Peru received two recognitions, best libero and best receiver. From the bronze medalists Guatemala, Adan Ruano was granted the award of best setter and Carlos Lopez the best scorer. Final standing: 1. Cuba; 2. Mexico; 3. Guatemala; 4. Nicaragua; 5. Peru.
Roamy Alonso de Cuba el JMV de la Copa Panamericana Sub‐23 Masculina CIUDAD DE GUATEMALA, Guatemala, 20 de octubre de 2018. – El cubano Roamy Alonso fue nombrado el Jugador Más Valioso JMV de la cuarta Copa Panamericana Sub‐23 Masculina que culminó el sábado en el Domo Polideportivo de la Ciudad de Guatemala. El central Romay Alonso recibió el reconocimiento como al Jugador Más Valioso luego que Cuba ganara de manera invicta la Copa Panamericana Sub‐23 venciendo a México en su segundo título en la corta historia del evento. Alonso fue acompañado por varios compañeros de equipo y otros jugadores rivales, que por su sobresaliente desempeño individual, fueron reconocidos durante la ceremonia de premiación dirigida por el presidente del Comité de Control Félix Sabio. El cubano Osniel Melgarejo recibió los premios a mejor atacante y mejor servicio. También de Cuba, Miguel López fue nombrado el segundo mejor atacante, Miguel David Gutiérrez el mejor opuesto y José Masso segundo mejor central. El mexicano Josué López fue premiado como el mejor central y el nicaragüense Miguel Castillo el mejor defensor. Jhonathan Nakamatsu de Perú recibió dos reconocimientos, mejor libero y mejor receptor.
