Belize Women Off to Winning Start in Second Round World Qualifiers
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: Tichele Solis was one of three players to score in double-digits as little known Belize made a winning start to the second round of the 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championship NORCECA qualifiers, outplaying Antigua & Barbuda in four sets in their Group J qualifying opener at the International School of Curacao Auditorium, Willemstad on Saturday morning. Going into the encounter, Antigua & Barbuda, the second ranked team in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) behind fellow group opponents, St Lucia and ranked 19th in NORCECA was expected to get the better of the 27th NORCECA ranked Belize. However. Belize, representing the Central American Volleyball Confederation (AFECAVOL) showed it was up for the fight and took advantage of the absence of some key players for Antigua & Barbuda to come away with a 25-11, 18-25, 25-17, 25-13 triumph in one hour, 26 minutes. It was a dominant effort by Belize which outscored its opponent on spikes 38-20; blocks 8-6 and service aces, 13-5, all backed up by setter, Tanesha Encalada, who accounted for 24 of the team’s 25 perfect sets. Solis led the way for the Central Americans with 17 points, inclusive of 15 spikes while Shantell Arnold tallied 15, which included five blocks and four aces, and Captain Sherylee Young-Thornton, 12, ten of which were spikes. For Antigua & Barbuda, Naheemah Wilson was the lone player to reach double-figures with 11 points, including nine spikes and one ace while captain Giselle got seven and Kwansia Carr, five, in the loss. Commenting on her team’s performance, Azar said she was pleased with the effort of her team-mates despite the loss. “We made a few bad passes that cost us in the end but all-in-all I think the team played well. I must also say congratulations to Belize for giving us a good fight and we now have to go back to the drawing board and work harder for our next match. Young-Thornton, said her team’s intention was to come out and play with a lot of energy from the first point and even though it may have worked against them in the second set by gifting its opponent easy points, the end result was what mattered most. Young-Thornton also praised her team’s serving effort which she said was key in setting up a lot of easy points. “We knew we had to serve well and our girls did just that and we are very happy for the win and looking forward to improving on our little mistakes for the second match.
Antigua & Barbuda coach, Esron Gittens pointed out that coming into the match his team wasn’t aware of how tall some of the Belize middle players were and most of their plays were centered around them. Gittens added, “The service game of Belize caught us by surprise as well it had us in some trouble and if you don’t receive well and pass you cannot create points for yourself, so we have to do better in that department.” Despite the defeat Gittens said he was still happy with the effort but with two tougher matches to come his players must now give a better effort. An elated Allan Sharp, coach of Belize was full of praise for his team’s serving which he said was key to the win. “We knew Antigua & Barbuda was missing a few key players so we wanted to put them under pressure from early and we managed to do that. “Our level of play fell off somewhat in the second set, but we regrouped and took the next two sets to get the win. However, Sharp noted it was not an easy outing for his girls as it was the first time they were playing with the molten ball which takes a while getting use too. In Saturday’s second session, Belize faces ECVA champions, St Lucia from 6pm while Curacao meets Antigua & Barbuda two hours later. On Sunday in the final preliminary round of matches, St Lucia plays Antigua & Barbuda from 8am followed by Curacao against Belize at 10am. At the end of the round-robin series, the top two teams in the group will battle it out for the gold medal on Sunday afternoon from 7pm, having both already qualified for the third round of qualification as finalists. The third match comes off from 5pm on Sunday with the winner having a chance to qualify for the third round, but it will need to do so as the best third place finisher from all six groups of the second round qualifiers.
Host Curacao Blanks ECVA Champs St Lucia WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: USA-based Christine Anthony and Geraldine Grigorius combined for 24 points as host Curacao blanked Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) champions, St Lucia in straight sets in their 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championship NORCECA second round Group J qualifier at the International School of Curacao Auditorium, Willemstad on Saturday morning. Anthony, who attends the University of North Carolina ended with 13 points, 11 of which were spikes while Grigorius added 11, inclusive of four aces and one block, and Neysa Hooi, eight to lead Curacao to a 25-12, 25-22, 25-19 defeat of St Lucia in 66 minutes. It was an all-round solid display from the host who outscored its opponent, 32-23 on spikes, and 11-6 on aces while committing only 18 errors to 28. St Lucia, which showed great fighting spirit to close to within one point in the third set at 19-18 after trailing 17-7 at one stage had a team-high ten points from Dania Hamilton while Latoya Edward got seven, captain Natalie Edward (no relation to Latoya) chipped in with six, and Indira Laurencin, five. Speaking after the match Edward, captain of the St Lucia team said “We were too tentative from the start, and our reception game was not up to standard which caused us a lot of points. “We have two more group matches and we need to win both to get to the final, so as a team we need to regroup very fast and turn things around. Maya Gomez, captain of the Curacao women’s team and making a return to international competition after missing last year’s series due to injury said she was satisfied with the effort and how the match was played out. “I must also credit our players for a great service game which was very instrumental in helping us score a lot of easy points, added Gomez. A disappointed Florian Combie, coach of St Lucia while not happy about the defeat was upbeat as he looked ahead to the remaining round-robin matches. Combie said, “Any time you play in the tournament like this you never like to be beaten in your first match because it puts you under pressure for the next two matches in the group. “We know the most important thing is to finish among the top two in the group and get to the finals which will guarantee qualification to the next round, so for us we have to get our act together very quickly.
With regards to the loss, Combie said he was pleased about the effort his players showed in the third set even though they were already two sets behind and trailed by a big margin. “The girls showed great fight and if we can play like that in our next two matches we should be able to get to the final,” ended Combie. Henri Delfina, coach of the victorious Curacao applauded his team for playing to their pre-match plans. “Going into the match we worked out a game plan for St Lucia and I am very pleased that we were able to execute to perfection and for that I am well satisfied. Despite the win, one concern in his team’s play according to Delfina was its lapse in concentration which allowed St Lucia back into the third set. “It’s something that we tend to do too often when we are in charge of a match, and we definitely need to work on closing out teams,” said Delfina In Saturday’s second session, St Lucia faces Belize from 6pm while Curacao meets Antigua & Barbuda two hours later. On Sunday in the final preliminary round of matches, St Lucia plays Antigua & Barbuda from 8am followed by Curacao against Belize at 10am. At the end of the round-robin series, the top two teams in the group will battle it out for the gold medal having both already qualified for the third round of qualification as finalists. The third placed team will also have a chance to qualifying for the third round, but will need to do so as the best third place finisher from all six groups of the second round qualifiers.
Team effort Gives St Lucia Important Win Over Belize
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: Samantha Mann led four players in double-figure scoring as Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) champions St Lucia overcame a first set loss to secure a hard fought four-set win over Belize in their second match of the 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championship NORCECA second round Group J qualifiers. This was at the International School of Curacao Auditorium, Willemstad, on Saturday night. Losers of its first match against host Curacao in three straight sets, St Lucia which played unbeaten in its first round qualifiers in Grenada last year needed a better start against the Central Americans who had a surprise four-set win over Antigua & Barbuda in their opener on Saturday morning. However, they went under 24-26, before battling back to register wins in the next three sets 25-18, 26-24, and 25-17 after trailing 23-21 in the third. For St Lucia which bettered its rival in spikes 45-39 and blocks 9-7, Man tallied 15 points, punctuated by five blocks, Dania Hamilton got 14 points (three aces), while Latoya Edward and captain Natalie Edward (no relation) chipped in with 13 points each in the victory which came in one hour, 40 minutes Belize, which had a chance to clinch a top two finish with a victory got a match and tournament high 20 points from Tichele Solis, 17 of which were kills, while Captain Sherylee Young-Thornton added 13 and Shantell Arnold, ten in the loss. The win saw St Lucia improved to a 1-1 record, the same as Belize, but on four points, and one behind its opponents. St Lucia entered its second match versus Antigua & Barbuda with maximum five points from its straight sets win over St Lucia in its opener, while Antigua & Barbuda had one point. Speaking after the defeat Belize captain, Young-Thornton said her team did not make good use of its start. “We made a good start to the match by winning the first set, but then our game fell apart and we continuously made errors on our passing and serving game. Looking ahead to its final round-robin match against Curacao in which it must at least stretch the match to five sets to earn valuable points, if it don’t get the outright win , Young-Thornton said her team has to show up with a better performance. “We need to work on limiting our errors, serve much better than we did in this match and play with all our hearts,” said Young-Thornton.
Natalie Edward, leader of the winning St Lucia squad was quick to state that this was by far a better showing from her team than in its opener against Curacao. However, despite the victory Edward noted that there was still some areas her team needed to work on to win the competition, like its reception game. With regards to its final round-robin match with its ECVA rivals Antigua & Barbuda, Edward said both teams know each other well and for her team to win it will need to play its own game and not worry about the opponent. Allan Sharp, Belize’s coach said he felt the match against St Lucia was the match of the tournament so far. “We entered the match as if we were playing a final, because we knew it was critical to both teams to get a win in this match, and while both teams were even after the first two sets, our players made too many mistakes from there on.’ “Our tactical game was off and we had too many service errors which in the end cost us the match. Florian Combie, coach of St Lucia first saluted the efforts of Belize whom he described as worthy opponents. He added, “They (Belize) provided me with a chance to see what kind of resolve my team had and in the end we showed great fight. “Overall, we only began to play the way I expect us to play in the fourth set as before that we had to come from behind always. “In the end we were able to pull off the win but I’m still waiting on our attack to show up at this tournament, ended Combie. In the second match on Saturday night, the fourth of the competition overall, host Curacao came up against Antigua & Barbuda. On Sunday in the final preliminary round of matches, St Lucia plays Antigua & Barbuda from 8am followed by Curacao against Belize at10am, at the end of which the top two teams in the group will battle it out for the gold medal having both already qualified for the third round of qualification as finalists. The third placed team will also have a chance to qualifying for the third round, but will need to do so as the best third place finisher from all six groups of the second round qualifiers.
Curacao Crushes Antigua & Barbuda for Finals Spot
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: For the second straight match, USAbased Christine Anthony and Geraldine Grigorious were the main contributors as host Curacao swept past Antigua & Barbuda in three sets to book a spot in the finals of their 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championship NORCECA second round Group J qualifier at the International School of Curacao Auditorium, Willemstad in the third match on Saturday night. Buoyed by its straight sets win over St Lucia on Saturday morning, Curacao came out with all guns blazing and stormed to a 25-8, 25-9, 25-9 victory to improve to maximum ten points from two matches and more importantly a ticket to the third round of qualification for the World Championship s in Italy next year. From the onset the result was never in question as Curacao opened a commanding first set lead and never looked back after that, outplaying its opponent in all aspects of the match. Curacao enjoyed a 39-6 advantage on spikes as well as 7-2 on blocks and 9-2 on service aces while making full use of Antigua & Barbuda’s 20 errors to its 16. In the end, Anthony was again the top scorer with 13 points, helped by 11 kills, while Grigorious added 12, which included eight kills and two blocks, and the duo of Neysa Hooi and Jurdelys Meulens, eight points each.
A relaxed Maya Gomez, captain of Curacao speaking after the win which was cheered on by a lively home crowd said she was happy that her team achieved its two goals of reaching the final and qualifying for the third round of World qualification with a match to spare in the round-robin. “We have one more match against Belize before the final and we will be coming out to play with the same energy as we did for the first two matches,” warned Gomez. Commenting on the loss, Antigua & Barbuda captain said her team must be credited for playing a much better game than it did against Belize in its opener. “We had a much better reception game, but our serving game was still off somewhat.” She added, “Congrats to Curacao for a match well play and for our next match against St Lucia we will need to be at our best if we want to have a chance of reaching the final, which is still possible.” Antigua & Barbuda coach, Esron Gittens was critical of his team saying he wanted to see better representation from his players on the court.
“I was disappointed in the way we played because we made a lot of unforced errors , but at the same time we have a lot of young players coming through and at this level it’s all a learning experience for them. Henry Delfina, coach of Curacao boasted that the win came very easy for his team due to the number of mistakes made by their opponents. “They (Antigua) made too many unforced errors, but it allowed us a chance to use our bench players to give them some experience and I am happy for that.” On Sunday in the final preliminary round of matches, St Lucia plays Antigua & Barbuda from 8am followed by Curacao against Belize at 10am, at the end of which the top two teams in the group will battle it out for the gold medal having both already qualified for the third round of qualification as finalists. The third placed team will also have a chance to qualifying for the third round, but will need to do so as the best third place finisher from all six groups of the second round qualifiers.
