United States, Dominican Republic to play for Gold in NORCECA Men’s Championship Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA (September 30, 2017) – United States and Dominican Republic won their semifinal round matches of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship on Saturday and will be play for gold on Sunday at 5 p.m. MT at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In addition, both the gold-medal match participants have now earned qualification into the 2018 FIVB World Championship. The third vacancy from the tournament will be determined on Sunday between Canada and Mexico in the bronze-medal match at 3 p.m. MT. The top three teams in the 10-team field earn berths into the World Championship, while the top two teams in a second NORCECA qualifier held later this fall round out NORCECA’s five vacancies into the world event. Match #20: Dominican Republic 3, Mexico 0 (Semifinal) – Sports Center I The Dominican Republic stunned Mexico 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 in the first semifinal of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship on Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Dominican Republic outside hitter Wilfrido Hernandez led his team with 14 points on nine spikes, four aces and one block. Opposite Pedro Garcia and middle blocker Jose Caceres each added 13 points. Mexico was led by Jorge Barajas’ 15 points. Dominican Republic led in spikes (36-35), blocks (9-6) and aces (9-5). Match 21: United States 3, Canada 0 (Semifinal) – Sports Center I United States swept its rival to the north Canada 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 on Saturday in the second NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship semifinal on Saturday. Aaron Russell sparked the Americans with 15 points, all on kills, Matt Anderson chipped in 11 points with eight kills and three aces. Canada was led by Stephen Maar’s 11 points. Match #19: Guatemala 3, Costa Rica 1 (Classification 5/8) – Sports Center I Guatemala made some key substitutions and came back to defeat Costa Rica 20-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-15 at the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship on Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Guatemala opposite Erik Flores led all scorers with 19 points on 16 spikes and a match-high three blocks. Middle blocker Andy Leonardo added 17 points on 13 spikes, two blocks and two aces. Costa Rica outside hitter Alberto Blanco led his team with 18 points on 16 spikes and two aces. Guatemala led Costa Rica in spikes (54-37) and blocks (13-6). The teams tied in aces (3-3). Costa Rica scored 32 points on Guatemala’s errors while committing 25. Match #18: Trinidad & Tobago 3, Martinique 0 (Classification 5/8) – Sports Center II Trinidad & Tobago dealt Martinique at 25-20, 25-23, 25-19 loss on Saturday evening in the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship Classification 5-8 match held in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
