Speaking after the loss, Anguillan captain, Connor was quick to admit that his team was too slow in starting while their passing game was also terrible. Asked why it good the start it did, he replied, “It was not because of fear for the other team, but more so, a lack of confidence. A pleased, Joval, captain of the Suriname team said he was very satisfied to get the first match out of the way in winning fashion. “The win will surely boost our confidence level for the other matches to come, but we still have some areas to work on to improve our overall game as well,” ended Joval. Commenting after the match, Anguilla coach Jason Liburd said the outcome of the match was not what he had hoped for. “We just wasn’t up to scratch in the match. We did not do a good job on our passing game and to make it worst our middle attack has not join the team as yet. “But overall, I don’t think if he was here it would have made a big difference to us, because we did not pass well at all. “Offensively when we were able to get in our passes we were able to score, so it tells us that we need to be more consistent in what we do,” stated Liburd.
Jerry Slijngard, coach of Suriname said he was very pleased with the win as it helps build confidence for the rest of the matches. Despite the win Slijngard said he still thinks he team can improve in certain areas of its play. Speaking after the match, Oscar Daniel Garcia, captain of Guatemala noted that it was a very close match for both teams but the key was that his team had a lot of difficulty in receiving the serves of Martinique. He added, “We were also a bit surprised as we did not expect Martinique to play at the level they did. They played a very good match and we have to play better in our next two matches, because we can still finish in the top two to reach the final.” Lefaivre, captain of the victorious Martinique team said his team expected a good result because of their good preparation for the tournament. “We also had good mental preparation for this match which was very key in getting the key points when the sets were close. We concentrated well and came out with a good win. Cuban-born Reider Lucas, the coach of Guatemala first congratulated Martinique on a match well played. He added, “The match was a close one, but Martinique did the little things needed to get the win better than us. They also concentrated on the match much better than us, but we have two more matches which we need to win, so we will be working towards that. Eddy Erialc, coach of Martinique noted that Guatemala has a team with a lot of good spikers and his assignment to his team was to get in very good first serves to make passing very
difficult for their opponents. My team also played with a lot of confidence because we did not know what to expect and now we have the win and will take this same attitude into our next match against the host country, which will no doubt have the crowd support behind them, “ ended Erialc. On Saturday afternoon, Suriname plays Martinique in its second match from 9pm with both teams on five points while Anguilla faces Guatemala two hours earlie, with both in search of their first points. On Sunday, in the first session, Anguilla and Martinique do battle in the first match from 9am followed by Suriname and Guatemala two hours later, at the end of which the top two teams will contest the gold medal match on Sunday night from 9pm for the automatic qualification spot to the third round of qualifiers next year. The second placed team will also have a chance of qualifying, but will only do so as one of the four best second placed teams from the six second round groups. The teams that finish third and fourth in the round-robin series will also meet for the bronze medal in Sunday’s penultimate match from7pm.

Speaking after his team’s second loss from as many matches, which ended their chances of getting to the gold medal match, Connor, while disappointed said he was still pleased with the team effort. “If you want to compare our first match against Suriname to this one against Guatemala, I would say we played with a lot more effort and energy, even though the scores in the first two sets ay not reflect that. “We have one more match to play in the round-robin and while we are out of a chance to qualify for the gold medal match, we are still representing our country and will be coming out to give a much bigger effort,” added Connor. Guatemala’s Garcia said after his team’s defeat at the hands of Martinique the win against Anguilla was a welcome one. He added, “It means that we are still in with a chance of getting to the gold medal match and we now have to give a bigger effort in the next match against Suriname.”
Jason Liburd, coach of Anguilla echoes the views of his captain in saying his team showed more fight and energy in their second match which was good. “We did a few things better in this match than we did against Suriname and with one match to go we hope to continue to improve before the bronze medal match. Cuban Reider Lucas, the coach of Guatemala while happy for the win by his team was quick to point out that his team also made too many errors which they need to limit in their key match against Suriname on Sunday morning. “It will be a very important match for us, one that we have to win, so we must do better in all aspects of our play,” said Lucas.
