Caribbean Champs T&T lead Pool A Hopeful Grenada, Haiti). Speaking on Friday, the coaches of T&T (Francisco Cruz), Guadeloupe
(Jean-Luis De Lag), Joe Smith (Bahamas) and host Surianem (Eric Aikman) expressed confidence in advancing to the next phase of qualification. Cruz said his team had no option but to win the tournament in his view. "We need to obtain the top spot in the group because for me its our only option, stated Cruz.
Our preparation was not good because we did have the training facilities available to us but at this level our team is more than capable of qualifying from this group as the winners for certain. He added, "I say this because we have the best players in the Caribbean region and the best team overall. "However, in saying so for us to qualify from among the top teams in
the Norceca region for the World Championships we need to have prope facilities to train at least three hours per day" ended Cruz. De Lag first pointed out out his team was without four of its players who were part of the team which competed at the recent Caribbean Championship in St Croix, US Virgin Islands for various reasons.
T&T, recently crowned five-time Senior Caribbean Women's Volleyball champions headlines the 2014 FIVB World Volleyball Women's Norceca First Round Pool A qualifying series which serves off in Paramaribo, Suriname on Saturday (September 1) before ending on Sunday (September 2). In addition to T&T, host Suriname, Guadeloupe and Bahamas are the other team s involved in the four-team round-robin series to be contested at the Ism ay van W ilgen Sports H all, Param aribo, Suriname. On Saturday morning, T&T faces Bahamas from 9am in the tournament opener while Suriname entertains Guadeloupe two hours later. In Saturday's afternoon session, T&T comes up against Guadeloupe from 6pm followed by Suriname versus Bahamas at 8pm. On Sunday morning in the final preliminary round of matches, Bahamas tackles Guadeloupe from 9 am followed by Suriname against T&T in a rematch of the 2010 Caribbean Championship final, which the latter won at the same venue. At the end of the round-robin series, the top two teams will meet in the final and the third and fourth place team battle for bronze after w hich the top
three teams will advance to next year's second round of qualifiers. The women's qualifying series in Suriname is the penultimate women's first round group of the eight groups of qualifiers to be played with only Pool E (Jamaica, Barbados, Aruba, Cayman Islands) carded for November in Jamaica left to be completed. The winner of Pool A will join Anguilla, Honduras and the second placed Group E in Pool I in the second round; while the runner-up will join Pool L (St Kitts/Nevis, Guatemala, and the third placed Pool E team. The third placed Pool A qualifier will play in second round Group E
alongside Nicaragua, Bermuda and the winner of Pool E. The other second round groups already determined are Group J (St Lucia, Curacao, A ntigua & Barbuda, Belize); G roup K (U S Virgin Islands, El Salvador, British Virgin Islands); and G roup N (Dominica, Panama
"Because of this I don't have a strong team as I would have liked and now I told my players they have to work much harder for every point and set to try and win to be among the top three teams to qualify. The Guadeloupean coach also lamented on the fact that his team needed to improve its technical department in terms of numbers. "The work load for me and my assistant coach Douglas Pascall having to serve as coaches and managers at the same time is becoming a burden and if we can get to focus on our coaching roles and someone else does the managerial duties it will help us a lot." Smith said, "Even though our team is short-handed with only ten players we came here with the aim to qualify. "We know we don't need to be champions of the group to qualify but just be among the top three teams. "We have added a few new faces to the team that competed at the Senior
Caribbean Championship in US Virgin Islands last month and we know its going to be tough but we have to play hard and represent our country against all the teams which we know well.
Aikman was quick to note his team was a relatively youthful one with the youngest player being 14 years and the oldest at 26. "Despite its youth I must say I believe its a good team if you want to compare it to the 2010 team which finished second to T&T in the Caribbean Championships here in Suriname. "The core of this team comprises most of the players from 2010 so we have a good mixture of youth and experience and I am confident that we have a great chance to be among the top three teams to qualify from the group.
