We have had to adapt the team constantly do to small injuries” expressed Jerry Slijngard who added to be pleased because they are already qualified for the second round of the World Championship Qualification. The winners held margins of 8-2 and 7-1 in blocks and aces respectively. Jamaal Nedd for the winners said “we tried to work on the little things that still are missing, we had a good performance during the tournament, I believe our recent experience during July’s CVC made the difference. I wish the best to Cayman Islands, they are a good team.” Olney Thompson who didn’t play against Barbados indicated “we need to be prepared for tonight’s game; we are looking forward still to qualify and take third place. As for this match, Barbados is definitely the most experienced team here.” Ludger Niles of Barbados was content in saying “we primarily wanted to qualify and that part is done. We used some of our bench players to save energy for the final match and Cayman Islands did the same. All in all the competition has been a good one.” “We tried to make a change in our rotation using one of our younger players as a setter and he did pretty well. We need to develop our volleyball at a junior level. We still can make it to the next round so we’ll be expecting fireworks against Aruba,” the words of Keith Higgins.

3rd-4th place ARU v CAY Aruba captures third place at WCH Group E qualifier GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, October 7, 2012.Aruba captured the bronze medal of the NORCECA-E First Round Tournament of the 2014 FIVB Men’s World Championship following their 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 11-25, 2516, 15-13) win over host Cayman Islands. Daniel Mitchel with 17 points, 11 of them in attacks and 6 in blocks topped Aruba’s offense along with Frank Meermans who contributed with 16 points in attacks. Keeble Knight and Olney Thompson finished with 17 and 16 points respectively for Cayman Islands. Both sides were fired up as the last spot available for the next round in the world championships qualifiers was in stake, so a hard offensive strategy was shown on the court. Cayman Islands’ numbers had a big advantage over the bronze medalists, and they still carried with the defeat: (16-7) in the blocking category and (7-2) in serving points. “Aruba won because we trusted each other, this was essential. We began a little slow but we were able to keep in a good mood to recover and basically follow our coaches’ instructions, it wasn’t easy” expressed Eargenell De Cuba. Olney Thompson was disappointed and couldn’t really explain what happened “I was just trying to concentrate but unfortunately I wasn’t able to finish the match because a small injury, I think I could have contributed a lot more, it’s too bad for the team that the captain was taken out.” John Van Der Lee began congratulating the hosts because their players aren’t young and they did a commendable job, “I knew that if the match extended our chances to win were higher because of our age; we came here with a purpose, to advance to the next round and we fulfilled it.” “It’s a tough loss for Cayman Islands, we did play very well my guys tried really hard, especially in the third set but in the beginning of the fourth Aruba took advantage from the beginning and it came downhill from there on, at the end Olney injury damaged us” said Keith Higgins.

We must work harder for future tournaments” “I want to congratulate Suriname, in this particular match they handled the pressure better than we did, we knew it was a competitive one and Suriname never gave up. Some of our unforced errors cost us the match and we weren’t able to catch up, we lost the momentum. For the next round we must go back home and work on our defense on top of the net and some other areas” said Ludger Niles. Jerry Slijngard for the winners indicated that team work was one of the main factors that made the difference, “the players followed instructions and we came out for the win keeping in mind that Barbados was the team to beat in this competition, in all it was a very good learning experience as it’s not very often that we get these kind of opportunities to excel”.
