COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 16, 2014) – Guatemala evened its record in the Women’s NORCECA World Championship Qualifica on Tournament Pool O by defea ng Honduras 25-19, 25-19, 25-27, 25-22 on Friday a ernoon at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Team USA had all but its libero score at least one point in the match. Chloe Ferrari contributed 12 points in the victory and Kylin Munoz added nine points. Hayley Hodson, the youngest player on the team at 17, notched eight points. Libero Kristen Hahn totaled a match-high 14 digs for the U.S., while Lauren Plum set 23 assists. Panama was pace by se er Hashlyn Cuero’s seven points. The U.S. held advantage in all the scoring categories including 43-17 in kills, 6-2 in blocks and 10-2 in aces. The U.S. concludes pool play on Saturday a ernoon against Honduras (0-2) at 3 p.m. MT and have already secured a spot in Sunday’s gold-medal match. Panama (1-1) faces Guatemala (1-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a key ba le for second place. The tournament winner earns a berth into the 2014 FIVB World Championship in Italy. They are probably the most physical team in this tournament. It was good to see us respond and handle the different op ons, the different lineups that they threw at us. Some of our players served really well. It was good to see. We’ve spent a lot of me on it.” United States Team Captain Kelly Reeves: “I thought we played a lot be er today (than yesterday). Yesterday, it was our first game. There were li le ji ers. I thought we came out here today and executed. We watched film last night. We did everything David told us to do. We passed well. Se ers ran in-system and it was just a great win for us today.” Panama Head Coach Reynaldo Ortega: “It’s the first me we have played against the USA. Even though this is not their main team, it’s an honor to play against them. We are proud of the effort we showed against them. The objec ves for tomorrow will be to adjust our receiving line, work on our high blocks and pu ng up a strong a ack against Guatemala.” Panama Captain Joanna Arroyo: “It was a tough match. We tried to do the best we could at the moment we had the ball. We knew going in that the USA is a team that has a lot of experience. The thing that probably hurt us the most was our blocking. We had a poor block on the outside. We think we can adjust it and win tomorrow against Guatemala and get a chance to play the USA again.”
Guatemala’s Blanca Recinos sparked her squad with 21 points. Teammates Diana Arias and Stefany Bolanos contributed 15 and 14 points, respec vely. Walda Maldonado had 25 of her team’s 83 digs and was excellent on 26 of 38 service recep ons. Mariajosse Diaz and Caterine Leiva led Honduras with 12 points each. Guatemala’s a ack produced a 6135 advantage in kills to go with a 9-5 margin in aces. Honduras held a slim 9-7 edge in blocks. Guatemala (1-1) faces Panama at 1 p.m. MT, while Honduras (0-2) closes out pool play on Saturday at 3 p.m. against host United States. The top two teams in the four-team round-robin pool advance to Sunday’s gold-medal match with the winner earning a berth into the 2014 FIVB World Championship in Italy. We lost a li le confidence in the third set, and our performance went down as a result. But it’s the unity of the group and the mentally going forward that we had to get serious. We are excited for the next match.” Guatemala Captain Diana Arias: “It’s amazing that the difference was only five points. We were not sure we were going to win when we first started. Honduras is a very unified team, and they were resilient, but our team stuck together and we pulled through with the win.” Honduras Captain Estela Duron: “Today was be er than yesterday. We were more concentrated today and had more enthusiasm. The only difference was ending the games and keeping the advantage in points. Tomorrow is a new day, and we will always give our best.” Honduras Head Coach Marcos Tejeda: “I think it is a privilege to play USA tomorrow. It will be a great experience to play with a team that has that kind of reputa on. We expect to play our best and learn from them.”
