Unbeaten Argentina beats Canada 3‐0 to top Group B of Pan American Cup. Gatineau, Canada. ‐ Argentina confirmed their gold medal ambitions with an unbeatable run on top of Group B of the 12th Men’s Pan American Cup as they defeated Canada in three sets (27‐25, 25‐23 and 25‐ 11) in one hour and a half at Gatineau’s Robert Guertin Arena. Runner‐up in the last two editions of the continental event, the South American nation aims to join a selective group of four countries that have lifted the crown at least once in the 11‐year history of the tournament. Argentina got off to a good start by taking an 8‐4 lead at the first technical timeout. They stayed in front 16‐ 13, but Canada bounced back to tie and move 17‐16 ahead. They had a set point 24‐23, but Pablo Crer, Sebastian Solé and Bruno Lima responded from the hitting line to take the win 27‐25. Both teams stayed evenly matched in the second set with Canada getting the edge 8‐7 at the first timeout. Argentina bounced back and took the lead 16‐13, but Canada kept fighting and managed to tie the set at 21. But a serving and hitting error ensued and it paid the way for the South Americans’ win 25‐23. Argentina took advantage of hitting errors on the Canadian side and Martin Ramos led them to an 8‐3 lead at the first timeout. The South Americans kept adding pressure and doubled the lead to 16‐8 at the second timeout. Fabian Flores, who joined in the third set, contributed with four points from the middle. Their defense responded and Cristian Poglajen finished it off with two solid spikes to give Argentina a clean 3‐0 sweep in all three preliminary matches. The South American squad advanced automatically to the semifinals on Saturday. Canada will play the Dominican Republic on Friday for a place in the final four. Julio Velasco, head coach of Argentina: “We played a good match. We could play all our substitutes. We need to play games in preparation for the South American Championships. That’s why we brought our best team here. We haven’t played in a while after the World League. We hope to meet Cuba. Cuba, the United States and the Dominican Republic have shown a good level. Every match is different and we will prepare well for the semifinals. Larry McKay, head coach of Canada: “Our concentration on basic skills was better today (over the match vs Puerto Rico yesterday). We also had some better individual performances today, so that’s a step forward for us. They brought a lot of confidence to the floor …. We’ll now try to get as much rest as we can and come out with a physical game tomorrow.”
Cuba ends undefeated on top of Group A after 5‐set win over the USA Gatineau, Canada, July 27.‐ Cuba completed an undefeated campaign on top of Group A of the 12th Men’s Pan American Cup with a five‐set win over the United States (24‐26, 25‐21, 25‐21, 19‐ 25 and 15‐11) in over two hours at Gatineau’s Robert Guertin Arena. The match between the youngest and tallest teams in the tournament lived up to its billing with a top‐quality volleyball being played right from the outset. The USA found spaces in the Cuban defense to lead 8‐4 and 16‐13. Cubans kept fighting and with two consecutive blocks managed to tie at 24, but the Americans kept their composure and won 26‐24. The defending champions Cuba came back to the court determine to even the match and they showed their strength early in the second set by taking an 8‐5 lead, which they increased to 17‐11. The Americans never gave up and closed the gap to three points (21‐24), before Miguel David Gutierrez sealed the win with a strong attack. The third set started out evenly, with the USA taking a narrow 8‐7 lead. Cubans keep an aggressive game. After a long rally, Javier Jimenez blocked the tall American attack to the crowd’s delight and equal the set at 11. Miguel David Gutierrez scored an ace and Miguel Angel Lopez followed with a strong hitting to put the Cubans 16‐14 ahead at the second technical timeout. Both Gutierrez and Lopez kept hitting hard from the angles and despite a late US surge, the Caribbean country went on to take the third set 25‐21. The North Americans bounced back and after an even start broke away to build a comfortable 20‐13 lead. Despite some net violations, the Americans regained their composure and closed the set 25‐19 to force a tie‐break. A substitute in the previous set, Osniel Melgarejo put Cubans in front early on with a solid serve. Before they changed sides, Cuba led 8‐6 and increased the lead to 12‐8, but left‐handed Michael Saeta caused a lot of damage from the service line and closed the gap to two points (10‐12). The Caribbean squad regrouped after a brief timeout as Miguel David Gutierrez scored his six hitting point of the set to secure the victory 15‐ 11. team, but we could have won in three sets. Our next match will certainly be difficult, but our mindset in on the win.” Miguel David Gutierrez: “This win means a lot to me and to the whole team. We are a young team and despite the ups and downs, everyone did their best in the last set and we managed to win. We led by four points in the tie‐break and these are situations we need to manage at this level. We must work on the psychological aspect and we need to finish off the game. We had key players who could not come here due to various reasons, but this s not excuse as we had everything to win the match.” Ramón Hernández, coach of Puerto Rico: “It was a great match for both teams. A great offensive performance by both Venezuela and Puerto Rico, and at the end we pulled it out. It was the first five‐game match of the tournament – so it was exciting to be part of this match. I am proud of the team.”

But in the end, they came back and managed to play well a certain times in the match. I’m happy for the win today.” Jorge Azair, coach of Mexico: “Dominican Republic is a classic game within NORCECA. The game was really intense. My players played better than yesterday, but I’m still disappointed we don’t advance to the next round. We need to work on our blocks and services essentially to qualify for World Championships. Half of the team is pretty young so it’ll be a long process. This tournament is a great experience for them.
