Mexico Beats Nicaragua to Advance to Semis TULSA, USA (July 17, 2014) – Mexico qualified for the semifinals of the NORCECA Boys’ Under‐19 Continental Championship on Thursday with a 25‐18, 25‐17, 25‐22 win over Nicaragua. Mexico will play in Friday’s semifinal, against either the United States or Cuba. Nicaragua will play in Friday’s match for fifth place. After losing a difficult five‐set match to Cuba in pool play on Wednesday, Mexico Team Captain Ridl Garay said it was difficult for his team to get motivated for the quarterfinal match. “Our intensity was lower during this match,” Garay said. “We should play 100 percent no matter what. Today our intensity had to build.” Nevertheless, Mexico led Nicaragua in kills (41‐28) and aces (8‐1) while the team tied in blocks (4‐4). Nicaragua Head Coach Osman Hernandez said he has seen his team improve throughout the tournament. “The team has definitely gotten better,” he said. “This has been a great experience. Against Mexico today, I think our reception was better than it has been, though I’m definitely not happy with the loss.” Mexico’s Bruno Cruz led all scorers with 12 points on a match‐high 11 kills and one ace. Garay added 11 points on nine attacks and two aces. Marco Polo Manjarez scored 11 points on seven kills and a match‐high four aces. Juan Reyes led Nicaragua with 10 points on 10 attacks. Roberto Espinosa scored eight points on seven kills and one ace and Freddy Vanegas had a match‐high three blocks to go with four kills. Puerto Rico’s Tough Serves Sends it to Semifinals TULSA, USA (July 17, 2014) – Puerto Rico blasted its way into the semifinals of the NORCECA Boys’ Under‐19 Continental Championship with a 25‐15, 25‐16, 25‐11 victory over Guatemala in the quarterfinals on Thursday at the Cox Business Center. Puerto Rico (2‐1) will play Cuba (3‐0) in Friday’s 4 p.m. CT semifinal while Guatemala (1‐3) will play Nicaragua (0‐3) in the match for fifth place at 2 p.m. CT. Puerto Rico was coming off a 3‐0 loss to the United States on Wednesday while Guatemala had won a 3‐2 battle over Barbados that had left its starting middle blocker injured. “I thought our team played really well,” Puerto Rico Coach Julio Ruvira said. “We knew that Guatemala had a tough game yesterday with Barbados, so they would be a little tired today.” When Guatemala would get close, Puerto Rico would rely on strong serving to pull away again. Puerto Rico’s serving gave Guatemala the most problems and the Caribbean nation led in aces 16‐2. It also led in kills (29‐19) and blocks (6‐5). Puerto Rico also scored 24 points on Guatemala errors while committing 16. Puerto Rico’s Luis Ocasio and Jonathan Rodriguez each scored 11 points. Ocasio had eight kills and three aces. Rodriguez scored on three kills, a match‐high three blocks and a match‐high five aces. Janeudy Hernandez added 10 points on seven attacks, one block and three aces. This has been a new experience. I have seen really good players. They have a different technique. It tells me I need to train better and have more time training and do the best I can.”
