En reñido partido Barbados logró bronce frente a Surinam LA HABANA, Cuba, 24 de mayo, 2014 - La selección de Barbados volvió a cortar la inspiración a Surinam al vencerlo 3-2 en reñido choque y se quedó con la medalla de bronce del Torneo Clasificatorio NORCECA, grupo B, del Campeonato Mundial Masculino de Voleibol. El encuentro se extendió a casi dos horas y concluyó con parciales de 31-29, 2325, 25-14, 24-26 y 16-14 para alegría de Ludger Niles, entrenador de los ganadores, quien reconoció que sus rivales "nos asediaron punto a punto, y aunque mi equipo comenzó nervioso supo enfrentar este juego tan competitivo, felicito a Surinam por su resistencia". Precisamente los dos jugadores más experimentados de Barbados guiaron la ofensiva, Shawn Simpson (19) y Fabián Cox (15), con el apoyo de Akeem Payne, quien también tributó 15 y Ammuniki Wood 11. Su capitán Alain London, manifestó que "sabíamos que sería un juego difícil aunque les ganamos ayer, por eso servimos lo más fuerte posible para que no pudieran acomodar el juego, nuestra recepción tuvo sus debilidades, pero atacamos de manera consistente". Por Surinam sobresalieron Antoine Vilet (27), máximo anotador del choque, seguido de Keven Sporkslede (21), Clyde Fraser y Roberto Joval (ambos con 12). Jerry Slijngard, su entrenador, valoró como de bueno el juego, durante el cual sus muchachos siguieron las instrucciones, "pero a veces se necesita un poco de suerte y eso nos faltó hoy, felicitaciones a Barbados y nos volveremos a encontrar. Cuba venció a Dominicana y va para el Mundial LA HABANA, Cuba, 24 de mayo, 2014.- Cuba se impuso a República Dominicana 3-1 y consiguió el cupo para el Campeonato Mundial de Polonia en un juego digno de la final del Torneo Clasificatorio Masculino de la NORCECA, grupo P, que concluyó esta noche en la Ciudad Deportiva. Los visitantes comenzaron un tanto desesperado y aunque en el segundo set retomaron el ritmo, el joven equipo local impuso su propia estrategia y aprovechó cada error del peligroso rival para desconcentrarlo y triunfar con marcadores de 25-14, 26-28, 25-18 y 25-12 en una hora y 41 minutos de frenético accionar. El opuesto Rolando Cepeda resultó el máximo anotador del duelo con 23 puntos, escoltado por los esquinas Javier Jiménez (14) y Osmany Uriarte (12), un trío en el que recae el mayor peso ofensivo de esta selección, muy superior hoy en el bloqueo con ventaja de 15-4. Otro que aportó fue el central Isbel Mesa con 11 tantos. Por los dominicanos sus líderes José Miguel Cáceres (17) y Elvi Contreras (13) fueron los únicos que consiguieron doble dígitos en encuentro donde el equipo cometió 32 pifias por 22 los de casa. Rodolfo Sánchez, entrenador cubano, resaltó la disciplina de sus muchachos "que cumplieron el plan táctico y disminuyeron los errores, y eso, unido a la entrega y su coraje nos dieron la victoria, y esa aptitud es vital en un equipo tan joven, que ya siente amor por su camiseta. Pero el triunfo es de todo el colectivo por lo que se trabajó y todo lo que unidos estamos rescatando". El zurdo Cepeda, capitán del patio, expresó el orgullo por su equipo "porque supo crecerse en los momentos difíciles para poder clasificar ante un equipo fuerte que supimos contrarrestar, a medida que juguemos más los errores serán menos y en eso trabajaremos". José Álvarez Cutiño, el cubano que lleva las riendas de Dominicana, señaló que "a pesar de que en estos veinte días he visto un avance en mis muchachos hoy jugamos mal, debemos mejorar el contraataque y no dar posibilidades al contrario con nuestros propios errores, son jugadores con talento pero hay que prepararlos bien para ir a luchar al repechage".

El central Wilfrido Hernández, capitán de los quisqueyanos, felicitó al equipo de Cuba, "pues jugó muy bien, sabemos que es muy fuerte, hay que jugarle agresivo y nosotros fallamos en la concentración y el servicio".

Cuba beats the Dominicans and off to the World Championships HAVANA, Cuba, May 24, 2014 – Cuba imposed itself before the Dominican Republic in four sets and achieved the ticket to the World Championship in Poland in a game worthy of a final of the FIVB Men’s World Championship NORCECA Qualifying Tournament Pool P which ended tonight at Ciudad Deportiva. The visitors started somewhat desperate and despite regaining the rhythm on the second set, the young local team showed its strategy and took advantage of every error committed by its dangerous opponent to make them lose focus and triumph in sets 25-14, 26-28, 25-18 y 25-12 in 1 hour 41 minutes of frenzy action. Left-handed Rolando Cepeda became the top scorer of the duel with 23 tallies, escorted by outside players Javier Jiménez (14) and Osmany Uriarte (12), a threesome ahead of this team, very superior today blocking and a 15-4 advantage. Middle blocker Isbel Mesa contributed with 11 tallies. José Álvarez Cutiño, the Cuban ahead of the Dominicans said: although I have seen a breakthrough with my boys in these twenty days today we played bad, we need to improve our counter-attack and not give opportunities to the opponent with our mistakes, these are talented players but we need to prepare them right to go to the repechage". Middle blocker Wilfrido Hernández, captain of the Dominicans congratulated the Cuban team: “well they played very good, we know it is very strong, we need to play aggressive and we failed on the concentration and service”.
