f elections were held in the first week of September, the top 4 seats in the Senate would go to women, according to Signal Highlights’s latest ‘iWatch’ survey on the 2019 senatorial elections, released on its Facebook page, September 15. Weeks before aspirants are expected to file certificates of candidacy for the 2019 midterm polls, Poe ruled the survey with a convincing 20.8 % margin after posting 70. 4% rating while Cynthia Villar came in distant second with 49.6%. The top candidates based on the survey are as follows:

Which factor would you consider the most in voting for a senatorial candidate?

If election would be done today, who among the running senators would you vote for?

Popular Voting than Education Users relied heavily on popularity than education based on the result of the survey according to The Signal Highlights’ Facebook page administrator, Leslie Regalario. Asked which factor would you consider the most in voting for a senatorial candidate, online voters chose popularity as their top priority followed by the candidates’ track record, political clan, and affiliated party. “11 out of 12 senatorial bets are incumbent and visibly appearing in news stories. We have Lito Lapid who is currently seen in hit tv series, ‘Ang Probinsyano’, and presidential daughters whose words constantly make news, said Regalario. Surprisingly, education was the least deciding factor for students after only getting 23 votes with popularity having 98 votes. Explaining the reason behind numbers, Regalario said that ‘voters seem to lack knowledge or interest in knowing the candidate more’. Launched to monitor election-related news and trends, The Signal Highlights’ ‘iWatch’ online platform plans to conduct more surveys and post informative articles pertinent to candidates, political climate, COMELEC and more.

THE JOURNALISM VETERAN Malou Mangahas reminded the regional qualifiers to be ethical in their news story especially in this era of fake news and suppression of media in the country. Reacting to this year’s theme, 'Fostering 21st Century Skills and Character-Based Education through Campus Journalism’, Ms. Mangahas said that writing articles must serve wider audience rather than the reporter himself. Being a catechist first before deciding to be a journalist, Mangahas shared that her desire for social justice and respect for one’s dignity pushed her to be one. The invited speaker told the young scribes to “never be a paid troll or a disinformation army” during her lecture in the press conference/contest of the National Capital Region held at Marikina High School, September 27, 2018. Mangahas clarified about the very role of journalists. “It is not the role of journalist to complain or report something but make the

With the concept, ‘The Past and the Curious’ ‘students enjoyed the spectacles of hanging notes and literary book covers with artistic and colorful design along with live storytelling of Filipino myths and folklores. “Nakakatuwa ‘yung mga pasabit na mga letters at notes,” said Marie Joe R. Hafalla, a Grade 9 student visitor. Also featured in the library were works in the Philippines such as legends, short stories, novels, fables and dioramas, and story boards. “Mas mabibigyang-halaga ang kultura at tradisyon ng Pilipinas at ng ibang bansa sa Asya kung makikita ito ng lahat sa pamamagitan ng exhibit,” said Program Manager Diana Jell C. Estrera. With a budget of 4,000 pesos Estrera explained that the Gallery Walk served as one of the department’s highlighted activities. The move was decided upon noticing students’ lack of appreciation to the works of literary artists that seem to be gradually vanishing and neglected in the country according to the department.

‘Acceptance is the solution’ MAHARTHA COROBONG & ABRIANNE BUENACIFRA, 8-DIAMOND

"ACCEPTANCE is the solution," said Mrs. Catherine Espinola, the Guidance Office Coordinator of Grade 8 following the number of reports concerning cyber attacks on teachers on Facebook, Twitter and other online sites. With the performance-based focus of K12 program, students struggle to meet the requirements on each subjects particularly in Mathematics, English and Science. “Nahihirapan po kami lalo na kung sabay-sabay po ang pasahan ng mga projects sa isang araw o isang lingo,” said Princess Anne Gabriel, a Grade 8 student. In 2010, the Department of Education has released Memorandum No. 392 otherwise known as ‘no homework during weekend policy’ but is limited to public elementary schools only. The school’s Guidance Office is firm in reminding the students to ‘embrace the new system to find the willingness to study’. Espinola added that youth ‘should focus on their long-term goals’ and avoid 'I'll cross the bridge when I get their' mentality. Teachers are alarmed by the recent Facebook posts shared by students blaming the teachers for ‘inconsiderate’ volume of tasks. “Ang sa amin lang gusto namin na sa end ng school year ay may baong kaalaman at disiplina ang mga estudyante sa paggawa ng kanilang mga aralin at proyekto,” said Michael Rama, the Faculty Club President. Grade-level council chairmen planned to let the advisers explain the topic before the parents and students in a form of short talk in the next parentteacher conference in November.

REMAINING residents of Tenement Building remained unfazed in leaving their homes despite pressure from the National Housing Authority (NHA). NHA warned the residents for years now to relocate to Trese Martires Cavite after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) inspection showed the building’s vulnerability to natural disasters that could result to fatalities. Cracks were visibly found in the concrete walls and corridor of the compound posing a higher risk for the residents in case a strong earthquake such as the famously coined ‘Big One’ hit the place. "Hindi na talaga namin kayang iwan ang Tenement. Dito na ako lumaki at nagkaroon ng sarili pamilya," [We couldn’t really leave Tenement. We grew up here and had our own family] said Mrs. Esterline Jose who had been living in the compound for 43 years now.

Other than years of residency, settlers also complained about the infamous nature of relocation area such as absence of water and electrical access and lack of job opportunities. NHA’s findings on building’s condition pressured the agency to evacuate the residents to avoid large number of casualties in the area alone. “This is actually our biggest enemy, not the NHA,” said Mr. Lorenzo Capili, the president of the Homeowner’s Association. At least 57 out of the total 712 families have been relocated from Fort Bonifacio Tenement since 2015. NHA continues its coordination with Taguig City Hall for possible ways to resolve the conflict with the remaining settlers.

espite several attempts, being the fourth this year, Signal Village National High School (SVNHS) recent conduct of mandatory earthquake drill only received an ‘OK’ mark from Disaster Management Coordinator Ryan Cano, November 5, 2018. To prepare for the expected magnitude 7.2 earthquake famously labeled as the ‘Big One’ that could happen with the movement of the West Valley Fault, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) imposed series of drills in the entire country for a better, more practiced citizens in times of disasters. However, Cano blamed the lack of communication between the school heads and class advisers for a late response time registered as compared to the allotted time.

Mylene Valler, SVNHS Grade 10 Chairwoman admitted the fault but clarified that the alarm system rang at 8:08 a.m. instead of exactly 8 a.m. but promised to improve the performance in the next trial. "Late po tumunog ‘yung alarm kaya mejo nalito po kami kung simula na ba o hindi pa," said Shekainah Barolo, a Grade 10 student. Grades 8, 10 and 12 attended the the 5-minute drill. Studes receive ‘stylish’ eyeglasses Over 6,000 benefits from Oplan Linaw Program MICHAEL SINABI, 10-SAMPAGUITA STUDENTS enjoyed the latest design of eyeglasses distributed in this year’s Oplan Linaw Program. Described as colorful and youthful, over 6,000 eyeglasses were distributed through the efforts of the local government to provide effective learning for the students of Signal Village National High School, the local government of Taguig City conducted the Oplan Linaw Program, September 19. According to the President of Samahan ng mga Optometrist sa Pilipinas, Dr. Noel Santos students of Taguig City are very lucky to enjoy the benefits of free supplies even in their eyecare. “No students should be left behind just because of poor eyesight,” Hon. Ma. Laarni Cayetano

said in her speech in the program. The Mayor added that to ensure the actual use of the item, consultations were set for a more unique and commercial look of its design. The said program conducted series of comprehensive eye checkups among the students a month before distributing the eyeglasses. Knowing the adverse effect of computer radiation, Oplan Linaw Program acts against this technological disadvantage among the youths. The eyeglasses come with a cleaner and a box for safekeeping and maintenance.

Great ruckus caused by a week to almost a month of power shortage became a heavy burden among the students and teachers of Signal Village National High School. The school's maintenance supervisor, Mr. Redmond Casquite said that the power interruption started because of overloading and the installation of more air conditioners in every classroom which eventually resulted in the explosion of the main transformer. The case was quickly solved and immediately relayed to the City Hall. MERALCO fixed the transformer by changing its wire to regain the electricity. The solution was cut short after the same wire used to change the old wire was just of the same kind. Students claim that they can no longer focus due to lack of ventilation, deeming the class flow stagnant. "Nasanay talaga kami na hindi limitado ang paggamit ng air con, kaya ngayon na nililimitahan na yung paggamit, sobra kaming naiinitan lalo na kulob ang room namin at pang hapon kami. Pero

Overlooking the possibility of electric shortages before installing more aircons and building school infrastractures contribute to the prolonged burden. To avoid the dangerous incident, the school's administration opted to control the amount of current consumed by each classroom especially those with air conditioners. Room to room inspections of students and officers from the Electrical Maintenance were also done to make sure that personal gadgets are not being charged inside the classroom. "We all hope that these kinds of problem will not happen again. It does not only affect the students but also us, teachers. The lessons don't go on smoothly because all the students are distracted." said Robee Balisi, Grade 11 Science teacher. Teachers were also advised to regulate their classroom's power consumption.

Late issuance of ID to blame for loose security LESLIE A. REGALARIO 12-HUMSS

Albeit additional security force, the late mid-August release of ID cards opened possibilities of external intrusion resulting to cases like class disturbance, minor brawls and cutting of classes, the Guidance Office said in an interview. The office issued the official School Rules and Regulations and handed it to security guards to monitor entry and exits of students. “We are really alarmed by the rising number of cases involving security inside the school especially from outsiders influencing our students,” said Victoria A. Contreras, the Guidance Office Coordinator. The regulations include requirement of signed letter from the principal in case of an entry request and schedule for 11 afternoon classes before students are allowed to enter the school premises. The Identification Cards (ID) had been issued and distributed from August 13-17, three weeks later than previous school year. "Minsan may mga nakikita akong mga outsiders na paikot-ikot sa school tapos cause pa ng gulo katulad ng nangyari sa kaklase namin last week,"

said Omar Mondigo, a 12-HUMMS student. According to Dr. Noemi Bayle, the school principal, the frequent cancellation of classes contributed to the delay of ID cards distribution. “We feel sorry for this delay. If it weren’t for class cancellations, we would’ve been on time in ID cards distribution,” Bayle added. In June, the local government called for an additional security by hiring security guards mainly focusing on roaming and looking after the gates of school. This is a supplement to local's Public Order and Safety Office force. The administration recently called for an emergency meeting to address the issue. Later they promised for a tighter implementation of the school rules especially about gate security.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION (DepEd) banned the selling of cigarettes or other tobacco products and computer shops within a 100m radius of the schools in accordance to the DepEd Order No. 46, s. 2016. Parents strongly condemned the presence of computer shops and other stores openly selling banned products. p According to Junior High School PTA President, Nelia Gimolatan, there were no indication of effective implementation of the said order given the students' continuous operation of nearby computer shops offering popular online games like League of Legends (LoL), Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) 2, Arena of Valor (AOV) Player's Unknown Battle Ground (PUBG) and Rules of Survival (ROS). "Kahit 'yung mga tindahang nagbebenta ng sigarilyo andiyan pa din hanggang ngayon kahit pasok sa 100m school radius," added Gimolatan. Fearing its adverse effect of computer addiction to students especially males, parents forwarded the case to the Principal's Office. "Kapag yung mga estudyante may nakikitang mga taong nagsisisigarilyo sa labas mismo ng kanilang

paaralan ay baka gayahin pa nila ito. May mga tindero pa naman na pinagbibilhan ang mga bata kahit alam nilang menor de edad pa ito," said one parent. Mrs. Tamondong, a parent, however supports having computer shops around the school. She believes that it can help the students for printing purposes, photocopying, researches and homeworks. "Syempre, nangangailangan din ng gabay. Dapat dedicated yung mga bantay ng computer shop na imonitor yung ginagawa ng mga bata. Para kapag may mga naglalaro at nagsasayang lang ng oras, mapagbawalan. Pero dapat bigyan din ng konsiderasyon yung mga batang matinong gumagawa ng assignment at mga project," she added. Both the parents and the administrators relayed the case asking for the closure of establishments openly violating the Department order.

Highway to Hell T

he dreadful reality behind inflation on the poor is its long term-effect, not only to the current situation they are in, but also to the future generation. Inflation forces them to spend almost all of their income for the most basic necessities like food, clothing and shelter in a daily basis. This makes it turn out like they don’t even have at least a little right for some things that may suffice their other personal needs. Inflation welcomes people to the highway to hell – perpetual poverty. Economic inflation can be defined as the sustained increase in the price level of goods and services in an economy over a period of time. When the price level rises, each unit of currency buys fewer goods and services; consequently, inflation reflects a reduction in the purchasing power per unit of money – a loss of real value in the medium of exchange and unit of account within the economy. Inflation affects economies in various positive and negative ways, but the negatives often leave a deeper mark within tge society. The negative effects of inflation include an increase in the opportunity cost of holding money, uncertainty over future inflation which may discourage investment and savings, and if inflation were rapid enough, shortages of goods as consumers begin hoarding out of concern that prices will increase in the future. It all brought us shock - even the most negative hunch of government agencies and survey companies failed to actually measure the rate of inflation when it was released. Last month, the prices of dry and wet goods, vanity products, fare fees and almost everything rose to a 5.2 percent hike. Statisticians revealed that this is the highest percent recorded for the last five years and even economic managers didn't expect this high of a hike - meaning that this rate went way too out of control. Parents and children are getting deprived of education which is actually one of the most vital need of a person to become successful in the very least. This lessens the capacity of a family to earn more income and partially conquer the effects of inflation. Lack of this causes stunted growth and condemns the families to eternal poverty until the next generations. They can’t even own a property but instead, they are forced to sell whatever they have in hand. Personally, they can’t obtain the right nutrition needed and maintain the hygiene they should have, causing them to be easy victims of sicknesses and death. They can’t afford the finer aspects of life making them feel dehumanized because they can’t do what other people do. Ultimately, as time passes by, inflation gradually minimizes the ability of the poor to provide even their basic necessities and takes away their self-acceptance and dignity by seeing themselves homeless to the extent of them begging for food and money. This feels and hurts like hell. Inflation in the Philippines is a prominent change, and experts say it will be catered more in the next months to come. Experiencing inflation is not a joke, for it carries a load of burdens we can’t ultimately bear. This will test the endurance of the Filipino people and the ability of the government to address solutions and pursue more reforms. Inflation is bad. To be poor is worse. But the combination of both is the worst.

e grew up in a conservative society wherein the actual truth is hidden from the young, making them oblivious and ignorant from the reality of life. The problematic culture of reaching a certain age before obtaining the right to know well is, unfortunately, still cultivated until now.

This unhealthy practice had gone to a point wherein it grew to become toxic and unhealthy enough. Out of their obliviousness as a child comes the grown youths who lack enough understanding on the diversity of people and their human nature. Ignorance, in this aspect, will never be bliss. If this continues, we will see generation of judgmental and close-minded people that will eventually grow into a society of fools. The intention may be right, but the implementation is wrong. Besides, adults must stop spoon-feeding sugar coated ideas to them because eventually, they’ll discover the truth and will learn it in hard way. Fortunately, being in the 21st century promotes the liberation and freedom of the right to wisdom. It upholds a sense of justice for the equal distribution of information that is important for the children, for they are breadwinners of the future generations. These times mark the birth of writers and authors who boldly present social issues while captivating the hearts and minds of the young. A good example is Mr. Rhandee Garlitos’ book entitled Ang Bonggang Bonggang Batang Beki, which tackled the life of Adel – the perfections and imperfections of the journey he takes in the gender of which he identifies himself. This only symbolizes that the reality of life can be fed to them without being

too harsh and aggressive. Advocacies like these render an essential role in molding generations. The reality of life will always be for everyone. Big or small, old and young, no matter what the life status is. This turn out why books and stories play a huge role in a child’s personality development, so much more than we know it. This age tackles a very crucial aspect that may or may not hinder an individual to grow into someone he should be. Reading creates limitless images and ideas in their mind, making them expand the depth of their mind over almost anything. But beyond this, here goes the real thing. It also awakens them into what the world is like. Aside from the awareness of children, adults must also be aware of the right nurturing they need. Train them in a way that will help them cope easily and marvel as they grow into people of wisdom full of acceptance and open mindedness. Together, we must go beyond the borders of the stigma that has enslaved us for a lot of centuries. Life is never a fantasy, anyway. As always, it is good to start while you are still small. This works the same way with children. If they will are able to swallow the truth little by little, one step at a time, they wouldn’t choke on the harsh reality they will have to experience as an adult. Give reality to whom reality is due.

e are living In an era of continuous discrimination, racism, and inequality. We are living in a world where people judge easily. Discrimination among Muslims has been too obvious lately.

Nowadays, to be a Muslim in the Philippines implies the inevability of a troublesome and unjust life. Discrimination against Islamic communities may not be that prevalent for now, but still, the blatant religious discrimination can be quite expansive. As one of the few Muslims studying in Signal Village National High School (SVNHS), I’ve already experienced firsthand the tension and mindless accusations from my classmates after knowing that I am a Muslim. One of them even asked if I am carrying a gun or is it legal in our religion to kill a person. Muslims are often branded as ‘killers’, I remember when my aunt applied for a job in a shopping district but was harshly denied. Why? The owner said that my aunt is a Muslim and might be carrying a weapon. Why are we being judged just because we wear a veil? Why are we being judged because we are Muslims? I have been wondering why nuns can cover themselves from

head to toe, but when an Islam sister does this, she is often misjudged. I have been wondering why, when a person protects his land, he is called a hero, but when a Muslim does it, he is tagged as a terrorist. Discrimination has to end, may it be about religion, status, gender identity or beliefs. Even if we see it from a different perspective, discrimination is still inhumane and is the root of human division. Admit it or not, religious discrimination has become epidemic. imagine a world where people cannot be judged based on her religion or race - little by little, we can achieve world peace. Wars will never end if discrimination won't end. We have to instill this in people’s minds or else the youth will never learn to correct their misconceptons. I am optimistic of a future where the world has a vacancy for discrimination because it will be filled with peace, love, and harmony. And that future starts now, as we end discrimination now.

Enough Discontentment I am hoping that teachers get the appreciation and benefits that they critically need.

he Teachers’ Month is to celebrate the profession and to give gratitude to the hard work they demonstrated. We all know that teachers are doing their jobs to make our country a better place for living. Unfortunately, not everybody knows that by just celebrating the Teachers’ Month would not suffice the appreciation they needed. We celebrate the World Teacher’s Month from September 5 to October 5 annually. Throughout that period, every single school in the world has programs to give honor and thanks to all the beloved teachers and professors. Awards are given to those who have completed their attendance and outstanding teachers are rewarded. There is even this motto to uplift them: My Teacher, My Hero. The sad reality is after the said event, everything comes back to normal. Teachers are also humans and they are not excused with social, political, and economic issues. A contemporary issue that concerns everyone in the Philippines is the inflation. It is the rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising. We are not getting richer and richer everyday but the prices, of even our basic needs, doesn’t stop increasing. This issue affects

In that case, this generation’s vision about being a teacher would be it is more than just a profession and a job, it is a vocation. In the future, no more teachers will say “do not opt to be like me for the reason that you will not be rich” instead they will encourage the youth to become a teacher that helps and motivates the future generation to be and to do the best in every way.

Present times and people seem to rise a wide disarray of irrationality, like what 94-year-old former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile did during a oneon-one interview with the Marcos scion, Bongbong Marcos. In this society where logic has taken an indefinite leave and cognitive dissonance took the place of common sense, where do the Filipinos stand? Thursday, September 20 marked the anniversary of the 46th year Martial Law declaration. On the same day, former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. uploaded the first part of his one-on-one interview with Juan Ponce Enrile on his own Youtube account. Bongbong, the unico hijo and heir of the late dictator Marcos Sr., sat and faced Enrile, a former Marcos defense minister and known architect and implementer of the Martial Law. The interview was mainly about composing lies and twisted truths about the said era. Upon asking the first question of what the biggest fallacy was, Enrile answered. They claimed that we killed a lot of people. That’s why when I was interviewed by someone some time ago, I challenged her: Name me one that we executed other than Lim Seng.” He went on claiming that the 70,000 people who were arrested (others killed) during the era of Martial Law are all false, unless that number included curfew violators and jaywalkers. He added that at that time, no one was arrested due to different political or religious beliefs or because they have been against the dictator. Obviously, during the interview, Enrile was extra careful on his choice of

words, ideas and recollections. He even belied about and excluded the extrajudicial killings. It’s funny how they were able. To do these stupid things in spite of the fact that the Filipinos are very much aware of what really happened – they are awake. Marcos’ Martial Law left a big and deep scar among the Filipinos, that even hearing ‘that’ particular word haunts them of the past nightmares. As for extrajudicial killings, Amnesty International reported at least 3,240 people were killed from 1972 to 1981, while around 70,000 people were imprisoned, and 34,000 were tortured. Families with first hand experiences of these are deeply angered because of the lies they have been feeding us. The problem we have right now is that people in authority continue to think of Filipinos as something that can be played on over and over again. They give a treatment of obliviousness around the area, promoting a culture of irrationality, confusion and anger. This attempt to revise history is ultimately disgusting. Old, ragged age will never be an excuse to distort the truth. Fortunately, a lot – almost everyone, are aware of the truth behind Martial Law. Not even the slightest distortion could overcome the angered ravishing Filipino blood. This practice of bending the culture and the history is so insulting. It’s funny how they eventually made a fool out of themselves for trying to fool us. Marcos and Enrile, you may spit lies all you want but remember, the Filipinos will never forget.

Gone Wrong What’s the point of eliminating drugs, if people are getting eliminated too?

ORAGON

LESLIE REGALARIO

S

upposed to be, the war on drugs should be a vessel of eradicating the heightened percentage of people being involved and deeply affected by drugs and is formulated to be a means of uprooting the long term effects that it has given to the nation way back from the past. From the election period until his inauguration, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte promised that the Philippines will drug-free within a time allotment of 3-6 months. Unfortunately, it has obviously gone wrong. Chaos started to root in the culture of something that should have been a good advocacy. It didn’t only make it worse, it fire started more problems between the government and the Filipino people. Let’s look at the bright side. Half a million to seven hundred thousand people have surrendered. 400,000 have been arrested and are currently being rehabilitated in institutions. Contrary to these little ‘positive’ effects, this drug war eventually left a lot of problems, going to its most extent –death. Back in June 2016, Duterte encouraged the public to “go ahead and kill” drug addicts. This is where it all started, and has been giving the people a reason to kill and hate drug users and dealers when they really shouldn’t. We can never neglect the fact that since the explosion of the drug war, nearly 7,000 people have already been killed. Almost half of it is killed during police operations and the remainder is what we call ‘unknown deaths’. These are the ones that are life sentenced by vigilantes –still under investigation. A lot of human rights organization had already been taking actions to fight the negative aftereffects of war on drugs. Political leaders from the Philippines and around the world

speak up boldly on why this must stop. However, it seems that Duterte and his government act really good in playing deaf and blind – they hate every serious extent of critic and condemnation going down the drain. Until now, these deaths haven’t met justice yet, clearly showing how corrupt this judicial system is. If we would dig deeper, we would see an inefficient and illogical reason. It almost doesn’t make any sense at all. Drug dealers, drug addicts and even innocent people who were just blamed are part of a stigmatized group, getting judged inappropriately from time to time. They always cater the difficulty gaining political support for the protection of their rights. No one deserves this extent of punishment. The government must come to a reminder that the thing we have here is war against drugs, not war against the people. The end does not justify the means. What’s the point of eliminating drugs, if people are getting eliminated too?

DEPOSITION

The Challenge of Accepting Change MICHAEL SINABI

Seeing change as an opportunity rather than a mere necessity manifests the general understanding of what change truly is.

T

he inevitability of change is indispensable. This pose a great demand for open-minded, compassionate citizens given the commitment of the Philippines to UNESCO’s education-based programs including the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). However, this so-called ‘change’ varies its impact to one’s cultural understanding and flexibility. When someone suddenly attempts to adjust the routine we are accustomed to, or behaves against our standards, expect an unfavorable response. In the classroom alone, students with the Southern accents, especially those in Visayan and Mindanao regions, suffer discrimination all because of their strong dialectical tone in reading the ‘e’ sound. The laughs drawn from classmates reflect the lack of knowledge with language diversity which is a critical element of culture. When we listen to the sound of our partner makes instead of the message, we isolate ourselves from the ultimate goal of global citizenship education—that is embracing and celebrating differences.

When we recognize change, we realize the need for it. Otherwise, we build a wall between us. Considering the major cultural shifts like samesex marriage, women empowerment and cultural migration, a glimpse in the past appears to be oblivious and non-essential. These trends, no matter how inconvenient and controversial as they may seem, have to be considered not simply to cope with it, but more importantly to invite positive social movements. Consequently, imagining a world where prejudices and skepticism are suppressed would no longer be a product of fiction. For instance, The Philippines has shown a significant change in promoting gender equality. Gone are the days of the cliched idea of a ‘housewife’ as more and more women of today play a vital role in the community from being a corporate executive to even as high as a President. Unfortunately, this culture of seeing the ability rather than the identity is still a predicament in Asia as a whole even up to this day with Arab nations mostly practicing the patriarchal system. In education, the migration particularly of Muslims from Zamboanga Peninsula and neighboring towns to urban cities like Taguig, where a certain barangay

is known for its Moro-dominated population like Maharlika Village, require a change in the curriculum and school policies to avoid religious biases and supremacy. Halal foods are served in the canteen, while prayers turn universal. By doing so, students discover the value of respect towards other faith. We open young minds to adopt and adapt to nonmembers. This in return address the gap between cultural dominance and social responsibility. Also, women and gay rights are more protected either in cyber or social dimension through clubs that serve as watchdogs against perpetrators. Catcalling, as generally tolerated and/or ignored, is now found to be offensive and even criminal to some. As a result, people practice gender sensitivity as opposed to silenced culture. With the students’ awareness of the global issues come in full disclosure, a room of one-sided view can be extended and challenged to meet the longstanding desire for complete change--a change that is unconditional and permanent, encouraging and inclusive. Seeing change as an opportunity rather than a mere necessity manifests the general understanding of what change truly is.

What’s wrong with cheating? KENJIE CARONAN

No matter how common it may be, avoid cheating! By doing so, you will preserve good relationship with others, and most importantly, with the God of Truth! “EDUCATORS are trying to reverse this alarming trend towards cheating. But the task is not easy. After all, not every teacher or student agrees on what constitutes cheating.” Most parents expect their children to behave properly when it comes to their schoolwork or schoolrelated task. Unfortunately, many young students compromise their honesty by cheating. Numerous devious methods are used by modern cheater. In fact, cheating by copying homework or using crib sheets is somewhat insignificant when compared with today’s high tech tactics. These include the use of cellphones; calculators preprogrammed with “extra information”; miniature cameras hidden in clothing which are used to relay questions to a helper elsewhere; devices that transmit infrared messages to nearby classmates; and even interpret sites that contain completed term papers on virtually any subject! Educators are trying to reverse this alarming trend towards cheating. But the task is not easy. After all, not every student or teacher agrees on what constitutes cheating. In one survey, lack of preparation was found to be the number one reason why many students choose to cheat. Other students, compelled by a competitive climate at school or by the high expectations of their parents, conclude that they are left with no choice. For some, constant pressure to get good grades results to cheating. As the book, “ The Private Life of the American Teenagers” puts in, “ there is something out of balance in a system in which pressure is so intense that the satisfaction

of learning is often superseded by the pressure to achieve, sometimes at the expense of honesty. In many cases, youth puts a lot of effort just to disguise the wrong things they are doing in school. Granted, the temptation to cheat may be strong, one must avoid moral pitfall! But how to do it is still a question left unanswered even by those righteous and religious. First, remember, you are in school to learn. No more no less. There might seem to be little benefit in accumulating facts you may never use but by circumventing this process through cheating, you hinder your ability to learn and make practical use of your knowledge. Real understanding is never obtained without effort. More often than not, it has cost. You need to take a serious view of studying and preparing. True, at times you may not know all the answers which results to lower score. Still, if you do not compromise your principles. Your holding to high standards of honesty and refusing to compromise cheating imparts real value to the good grades you obtain. You bring home from school one of the best gifts you can give to your parents. Consequently, you treasure a clean conscience and have the joy. No matter how common it may be, avoid cheating! By doing so, you will preserve good relationship with others, and most importantly, with the God of Truth!

There are a few who resides in the said area, but most of them are those who engages with the Kangkong plants for marketing purposes. Mercado De Lago, as sophisticated as it sounds, is a grandiose place that exhibits an aura of romance and calmness. Complemented by the water surrounding the area, it became an undeniably popular site for an enormous number of people.

esting one’s eyes over every single thing that has changed will take countless years in the line. Observation can drive an individual to either be contemplating over the beauty of progress or mourning for the death of things. Just like most observers, Leticia Tarripe, a woman in her 57th year of existence, gazes at a certain place where change exactly manifests. She need not any light to see, for her heart can tell what is there to perceive. Leticia, a blind woman, witnessed how something small grew to be something bigger than imagined.

Nadela

A quote said before that a family business actually succeeds more, because the burning passion enveloped into it are undeniable. Nadela can attest for it, because the “Nadela” clan having put the business together, made a huge hit in owning the hearts of foodies due to how tasty their food is amidst the low price associated unto it. Nadela’s specialty is Pastil that comes with free red iced tea for only 20 pesos. The costumer can add any side to it such as hotdog, tocino, sausage, and many more. Price varies. Apart from the said dish, sizzling dishes are also available. Nadela’s location is also strategic for it can be found near two major schools, considering that the price is so student-friendly.

which is something that needs no elaboration, because it has been common for decades already. What’s unique in this establishment is that despite its usual kind of dish where price starts at 20 pesos, Barangay Silog is able to serve foodies who are at a very low budget. Despite its common set of dishes, Barangay Silog’s ability to feed those who cannot afford much is what makes this food stop exceptional. Barangay Silog lies in the streets of Sampaloc.

Lugawan sa Tejeros

Exhaustion from work can be pacified by a hot meal and so Lugawan sa Tejeros got all that it takes for individuals who need rest, seek for good meal, and are after quality foods. Lugaw or rice porridge is not new to the industry but Lugawan Sa Tejeros took it to a higher degree because lugaw is served with many ingredients which are not too commonly associated or partnered with it. Lechon Kawali, as an example. The price ranges from 25 pesos to 70, depending on the topping or ingredient that one have chosen. The place where Lugawan sa Tejeros is established lies on a very strategic place, because along its area are churches, houses, and of course, a major highway.

If any tongue’s craving for pasta dishes such as baked mac, carbonara, and spaghetti, then this food establishment is perfect. What’s better is that it will also serve people of sweet and delectable desserts like cakes in different flavors, cookies, candies, and many more. But the best part of everything is that one can get them for only 169 pesos. This is the first buffet in Taguig that offered such bundle at a very low price. Due to its affordability, the consumers forged to claim and experience the privilege of paradise. The interior design is also commendable for it utilized and played colors which are definitely appetizing in the eyes. This store can be found along Barangay Ususan in Taguig. he repetetive and seemingly endless radio commercial one morning sparked hope in the entirety of Catalina, a petite girl who has eight siblings living a life in Marawi. Words sprung out from the old and worn out radio saying: “Education is for all.” Everyday is a sorrow sweet experience on her behalf. It has never crossed her dreamy mind that in 2018, life will bring her feet in Manila as much as the hope which she has hold unto eversince she heard the radio’s incantantions about education being made for everyone.

Marawi’s seige is undeniably a dead topic to ponder upon but the untold narratives, pacified hopes, and unheard dreams will never misalign with the need of the times. The story of Catalina and her pursuit of education were weaved of hope, determination and the ardent desire to live up to her rights or basically enjoying the life that she’s suppose to bask on. Never A Cake’s Piece Grief for basic necessities like food were scarce as Catalina’s father hardly get a Moro brother’s house to paint. Her sickly bedridden mother who barely lift her feet after a near-death stroke last year cries every night while mumbling incomprehensible complaints. But there is sweetness too. It was immensely evident on how Catalina wholeheartedly puts it: “Our large family finds happiness amidst our condition. I enjoy watching my little brother, Ahmil play his almost-bald ball which he found in an abandoned house with no roof and burnt walls. We love teasing and tickling each other in the bed despite its awful cracking sound.”, she said while wearing the lenses of a loving child. Impregnable Stop Catalina decided that life without guarantee has to stop, so she took a bold step. She left at dawn when all of her family was in deep slumber. In retrospect, the pain of leaving unwantedly the people so dear to her heart is still concrete not only in her heart but deep down her soul. Catalina knew for sure that the

time she told them about her plan, it would be a resounding NO. That moment, only a pair of clothes, were her company. Her sarong, for she heard the night is cold in the port, and a letter she received from her aunt in Manila. Fast forward after a long sea-travel, the invincible girl who is now a woman was able to reach Taguig City for simply asking every other person she met on the street, in somewhere called Maharlika Village—its name being a complete contrast of the town she grew up at. Luckily, her aunt Rosita willingly accepted her with a condition of helping her run an eatery. She even offered her a chance to continue her schooling. Being almost an adult, she was reluctant to accept the offer as it is embarrassing to sit beside grade 6 pupils. Hesitations, Determination, and Hesitations “That night, the thought of my family start to occur to me. How could I help them if what I do is only seek refuge for myself? I had to remind myself that going to Manila was not an escape, but a promise of a better life for them. I set aside my qualms and prepared for the next morning.”, Catalina said. Flustered, she asked the man at the gate where she can inquire for enrollment. He looked at her like she was lost and mistaken. “This is Elementary, hija! High School is a ride-away.” Such words only worsen her uneasiness. She quickly turned away and headed towards home only validating her inhibitions. But a teacher stopped her in her tracks as she guided Catalina towards what can be called as the doorway to colossal change.

Everything changed right then. Adjusting to her classmates took less time than expected. But, it was not a walk in the park for my classmates to interact with me. There were times when she felt isolated as nobody dared to talk to her. Eventually, it can be said that Whitney Huston and her song “I will always love you.” became her saving grace. Through that song that she sang, she earned the respect of her classmates. “I am recognized for my talent, not by my religion or gender. The victory was not the prize, but the moment itself.”, Catalina said in teary eyes. Soon without her noticing it, she finished her intermediate schooling. Two years later, she got her High School diploma through a placement test called PEPT--a program that accelerated her and saved her two years at least in Junior High School. Now in Senior High School, she is getting closer and closer to achieving her dream to be a teacher and to continue good deeds. With the care and love she received from people whom she shared the past years with, she felt home. “Sometimes, I dream of going back to Marawi, but looking at my life now, I realized that it is not the place that made me want to stay, but the people who are willing to embrace me. If this world can achieve such degree of humanity, then everywhere can be called home.”, Catalina concluded.

eeing through the soul of the subject is one perculiar skill that not all artist owns. Many can pen the details of one’s face starting from the crooked nose down to the chapped, red lips, but you can count in one hand those who are able to see beyond that. It is a thing to have the ability to almost draw like a photograph, but it is another to be able to exhibit what is often unseen. Aljames Tibay is one of those who is bestowed of an innate valor to unmask happiness and put the subject’s misery into light—-even that of his own. Aljames, an undeniably good artist, once drew himself, but was surprised that he can’t.

Aljames Pesigan Tibay is a Grade 10 student in Signal Village National High School. Currently making the most of his days before moving to study in Makati, he lets his pen kiss the paper as it taints the colorful days of his high school life. Aljames inherited his talent from his father who happens to influence him greatly when he started to engage himself in art. Drawing portraits has always been his passion. Just like most artists, he considers art as a good avenue for expression. Despite such facts, the artist never denies that behind his ability to draw any subject, he himself cannot grasp who he really is a person. A Pillow At Times Everyone experiences downfalls in their lives. Aljames is of course not an exemption. But he is lucky enough to have art in his being, because during moments when life brings him so down, instead of allowing the thoughts to drown him, he makes himself drunk in expressing himself through sketches or drawings. It is like he is crying his heart out by allowing his pen to do it for him. His portfolio is both interesting and shocking at the same time. As one leafs

through it, doubt can come along the way, because some do not seem to be the same with the caliber of the others. In other words, some look incredibly gorgeous but there are few which will make you question if it is really made by the same artist. In an interview with Aljames, he actually explained that those which are often questionned are the ones that he crafted during the times of his anxiety and sadness. He used to express the burden as he exhales it through art. Since made in a haste, those are less sophisticated but are the ones with the most emotions in it. Dreams to Chase Despite of Aljames’ talent which will surely bring him places, his family openly stands that pursuing Fine Arts won’t make him his own house and definitely not even enough to start his own family. Aljames personally thinks that he wants to pursue his passion for art until he graduates but being an more of an obedient son than an art enthusiast, he decides to go with the course Tourism. Without much drama in his part, he considers the fact that he can still draw even if he pursues another career. Besides, Aljames

believes that art is a part of him that cannot be detached even if he’s wearing a completely different suit in an immensely different place. Sure, life is unpredictable and unfair for all. The norms, philosophies, and standards often shackle the desires of one’s heart. It even inflicts a certain kind of pain due to the realization that even if an individual comprises his blueprint, he cannot escape the realities of life that will intervene his plans no matter how profound it is. Aljames may not pursue an art course in college, but being mature and realistic as he is, he chooses what he and his family think is the best for him. In an artist’s life, when any person asks or inquires about what story he can tell about his art works, he will often talk about why he drew it, who is in it, and what was his inspiration. As for Aljames, there is more to it than telling about the story behind the art work. In his own aesthetic way, he needs not to talk about it for once your eyes lay on his art, you’ll either smile or shed tears, for the ink tells tales and that’s a trait which cannot be robbed from Aljames regardless of what path he chooses to go down to.

The 21st Century skills are comprised of Collaboration, Creativity, and Communication. Such skills are now evident on every individual though it cannot be denied that it do not manifest on some, because of many circumstantial reasons. Due to the technological innovations and intellectual developments, these skills are even more powerful today. Such abilities were honed to be at par with the drastic changes that the current society is facing. To take it lightly with a bit of salt, here is a list of how campus journalists, in some of their respective fields, make use of their communication skills.

Awareness Center In the field of News Writing, the communication skills of scribes function in two major distinctive ways. First is by inflicting awareness to people by covering newsworthy events, people, or even things which will heighten people’s knowledge of what’s happening around them. Second and last is by what they do. The very fact that News Writers make news about a certain thing is an indication that such subject matters and that people in our society need to give it further attention. Convicted Voices If News Writing talks about matters which can give orientation, then in Editorial Writing, communication is utilized by using the very platform given to a journalist to voice out his or her say in a boiling, hot issue. For an instance, if the time will come and chaos started, because it has become debatable if whether a chicken existed first before an egg or vice versa, then through Editorial Writing, the stands of certain individuals can actually be contextualized and put into consideration if again, whether

the chicken came first before an egg or the egg before the chicken. In a deeper sense, Editorial writers use their communication skills in campus journalism for words to sprung out with an aim to sternly stand for what they think is right. Being the voice of the newspaper, Editorial Writers know a lot about their stands. Dazzling Storytellers Now, to what most people regard as the most feminine writers, the Feature Writers, their communication skills function in a sense that every single subject that they stick their hands in are usually crafted with vibrant techniques. Such writers or journalists captivate their readers’ attention by presenting the matter at hand in an immensely creative way. They are like magicians due to how they can link the image of a ragged and simple tire to an abstract idea called love. But it does not end there. Feature writers can also communicate amidst their fragrant word plays. Hidden between glamorous flowers are thorns which can only be seen by those who look close enough. Those are just some of the long list of how campus journalists grip the skills which have been given unto them. Most of the remaining fields which are not stated here are as interesting as the three fields presented. In every journalist’s soul lies a golden instrument in the name of communication. It is the form and shape of a horn but is in the color of a game changer. Campus journalists possess distinct howls within them. Howls which are all made possible to be let out because of the prowess that the 21st Century communication skills have given.

very individual is bestowed of a diverse set of skills. The world has now reached the 21st century age and the skills which are affiliated with individuals are of high caliber. One of the 21st century skills is communication. Looking at the word ‘communication’ is also depicting the image of a campus journalist. If one would focus their lenses on the things that a journalist in the campus can do, they can almost build the said word. There are numerous ways as of how campus journalists meaningfully utilize the skill in communication. Some which may sound petty and simple but most are of colossal significance.

hen one leafs through the pages of teenage novels, an enormous number of themes can be found. Themes which are weaved according to the strands of what will captivate either a young girl’s heart or a boy’s adrenaline. Along the streets called “Typical” is a dim alley labeled “Different”, because an advocacy, evident in the Philippine Literature, has dared to defy the governing stigma. It is not about fairies and their glimmering pixie dusts, mermaids in the deep blue ocean, the never-ending romance of princes and princesses, and other characters in myriad colors, but of real and fierce people in sweeping narratives calibrated to mirror the tragedy of another behind someone’s happy ending. Simply put, the kinds of novels that will pave the doorway in every young reader’s mind to grasp reality within themselves and in the society. Just by scanning the list of Filipino authors who pen undeniable masterpieces, it can be easily seen that indeed, this is the time when literature has evolved to mirror what needs to be reflected and highlight what people, specifically the youth, should be reminded of. The authors who have gone out of their way to craft such stories put in novels are Eros Atalia, Beverly “Bebang” Siy, and many more. The advocacy of incorporating societal realities in teenage novels has continued over the years and its vision to aid in the understanding and contextualization of it concerning hard yet real issues has not stopped running and carrying the baton of literature’s prowess. Stern Bedrock The youth is comparable to cute and fluffy guinea pigs. It may sound weird but guinea pigs are animals which are not naturally fond of people. So if the owner wants to possess a pet that he or she can cuddle with, then the owner must caress it at a very young age. Likewise, young age is crucial for every individual, so dealing with many aspects that concern them, especially their mindsets, makes it possible for them to grow up in the way good parents want them to be. Literature plays a major role in the education of every single individual who goes to school. It is often used to make lessons more comprehensive. Literature sure plays a lot in the foundation of many young people as it is being used as a reference for specific things

that educators want their students to grapple. The very advocacy of wanting to open the lenses of individuals at young age aims to formulate beings who are not apathetic is geared to the vision of a generation that is comprised with people who are more than oriented about the realities of this world. The teenage novels that display not only plots that always conclude with happy whatnots, but plots that recognize injustice, abuse of power, immoralities, and the sins of this world that hinder people to have their “happily ever after” in the first place. The advocacy itself is an advocate of balanced, realistic, and keen

foundation on every single being who all have the tendency to either be the oppressed or the oppressor. Compelling Truths Many individuals really exhibit ardent will to convey the things that little children need to decipher early on, in an aim that when these children reach the age of maturity, their eyes will be sharp enough to recognize the difference between pure kindness and deceptive concern hidden behind a grandiose Picasso painting. Indeed, the

children’s books that the advocacy is connected with, is something that firmly stands for truths to be unveiled so that lies won’t have its place in the minds of people. One of the authors who dared defying the sugar-coated stereotypes is Eros Atalia, a renowned Filipino author who has bagged numerous awards in the field of literature including Carlos Palanca Awards with his novels: “Tatlong Gabi, Tatlong Araw.” (Three Nights, Three Days)in 2013 and “Ang Ikatlong Anti-Kristo” (The Third Anti-Christ)in 2017. Atalia’s works are often labeled as funny yet brave for it conveys strong and dark messages in a comical manner. With his sensory words, readers even at a young age are able to grasp what he wants to say. He has featured religion, political issues, and immoralities in his novels and the said books are widely read by his younger audience as well. Living in a time and season when information is a bit overwhelming, the struggle of what to devour and what to throw is so real. But amidst the confusing time, there is that advocacy which has the capability to aid individuals in extracting what matters. The advocacy sculpted in some of the teenage books works with the realities that are bound to be revealed. Fake news, misleading information, and many more ideologies that may hinder people’s ability to do better are what this advocacy want to eradicate. So for such a time as this, the advocacy is highly valued.

How to get away with

'Murder'

T

LALAINE JHANA UBALDO, 12-HUMSS

T

imeless, inevitable, and deadly—such adjectives concisely describe the notorious vindication given to those who possess a certain demon called body odor. Through deep analysis, it can be seen that despite the numerous ways served on the table, the dire desideratum to lessen or even eradicate the problem has made little to no progress at all. Most of the memes we see today howl for a profound solution on the undying problem. An evident indication that indeed, many people are still socially convicted of what most victims label as “murder”. Exaggeration comes in handy most times. It does not only embody the prowess to defy body odor which has been shackling people and their ideally healthy relationships, but it can also set the magnitude of how destructive a thing can be. Body odor is most common in teenagers. Isolation is the worst risk that a teen may undergo once chained into tactless judgment due to his or her body odor. Therefore, here are some of the hacks on how to get away with “murder”:

1

Apply antiperspirants before you go to sleep. Yes you heard it right! Its either you use antiperspirants at bedtime or at a time where you dont sweat at all. This gives the product time for it to effectively work. (Products such as: Tawas, Milcu, Rexona and many more) Although one should remember that deodorant does not prevent sweating, but it just covers up the smell.

2

The magic of perfume or "pabango". Pabango is called pabango for a reason, so why not use it? Having a pleasant smell will not only lead you to a pleasant day but also pleasant relationships with people around you.

3

Check your diet. Sometimes odor may come from what you eat. Eating more of fatty and unhealthy foods may be one of the causes of unpleasant odor.

5

4

Make sure that your clothes are properly washed. Many bacteria grow from dirty and damp places. So if your clothes are unclean and sweaty, don't forget to wash and dry it up properly.

Have a check up with your doctor. If the following tips above still does not work, maybe you have to check it up with your doctor because it may be a symptom of something more serious.

Amidst this time when an individual can be suffocated by societal norms, heedless judgments, and crippling cultures, having something such as body odor is risky enough. Many believe that one should not adjust to the likes or preferences of the people surrounding him or her, but in this world where change in the society is still far from possible, it is safe to say that striving for ways to avoid isolation risks will come handy. If society labels body odor as murderous, then the steps above are ways to grapple one’s innocence.

TRAILING TRAINS O

LALAINE JHANA UBALDO, 12-HUMSS

ver the rigid and dusty streets of Upper Bicutan, an old lady named Virgie Manal bestowed her best to push the wooden cart containing piles of profitable scraps, in a seemingly aimless manner. Languidly wearing her white pants and shirt complimented with faded black dots, Virgie heaved out a sigh of exhaustion as she sat down in a cemented spot for a while. Resting her wobbly legs, her gaze drifted in the ardent vibe of the sun, despondently thinking of her next step as she tries to balance her financial capacity with the price of her basic needs. Deeply breathing for the nth time, she stared blankly in the open space. It was during August when the government of the Philippines officially decreed the Train Law. The purpose of injecting it in the system was to enable the country to embrace paradigmatic ways of running the race towards progressive development. An enormous set of reaction was garnered when Train Law was mandated, most of which are negative. Many disdained the law due to how it inflicts financial burden amongst the citizens, specifically to those who are less fortunate. It was even given emphasis that it was impractical because considering that even average citizens are struggling, then it Is an undeniable truth that those who are poor have received a colossal burden in their feeble shoulders.

Extensive Dilemma Virgie pulled out a thin stick of cigarette without any hint of hesitation. When she finished consuming the whole stick, she dared not to purchase another for she knows that it will affect her budget a lot. Somehow, she exhaled her remorse once again because the change in the system caused her to be deprived even of the most delectable guilty pleasure that she has ever known. In retrospect, Virgie reminisced of the times when the things that she needs are hard to be acquired, but laying her perspective for today, it became even harder. “Nakakapanghina ang sistema ngayon lalo para sa aming mahihirap. (The system is weakening especially for us who are poor.)”, Virgie said as her hands rested on her lap. Virgie is a single mother to five children who are all studying in Signal National High School (SVNHS), and she exerts grandiose amount of effort and determination to be able to sustain their living. Unable to finish high school, the poor woman resorted into works which involve the physical aspect

of an individual. She even stated that she had experienced working in a construction site just to earn enough money during the time that she was about to give birth to her last child, Ramona. Virgie is now collecting various scrap materials which she will later sell to a junk shop in exchange for few bucks. Nevertheless, Virgie knew that she needs to double her investment of persistence at this season when goods are of high price and an individual’s basic need is difficult to be fulfilled. Game Embodiment Comparable to an online multiplayer game where items are to be collected and forged, Virgie’s work is not as easy as it seems. She has to go from one street to another until the clock strikes nine for she is dedicated to acquire even the littlest piece of scrap, hoping that it will add up to the money that she is expecting. Pushing a cart with nothing in mind will make one feel tired and burned out, but like Virgie who pushes a wooden cart while possessing the mindset of a mother

who would like to go home with a bag of rice in her left hand and an average viand on the right, it was an easy piece of cake. Virgie knew that she has no control over the system of the country that she’s in, but she is profoundly trying her wishful thinking this time that maybe, just maybe, she can be heard by those who have the power to make a difference. To be able to get by for a day is hard, but to go home with something to feed your children is even harder for Virgie. Putting the fold of money in her senescent wallet, she stood her ground and started pushing the cart again as she anchored her determination to keep going despite the catastrophic changes.

Climate Change: Change is Coming NIURKA KAIZZ LINATOC, 10-ADELFA

any countries or places are experiencing climate change. Climate change is a change in the usual weather of a place. It is a terrible problem and it absolutely needs to be solved. The changes in the climate can have big effects. It has affected millions of animals, insects, humans and so much more. Also, it has affected all living things, in a fast and devastating way. But is it really true that we, humans are the ones who are causing climate change? There are things that can cause climate to change all on its own. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientists, humans are one of the main reasons why climate is changing. The daily activities that we usually do have major effects in it. For example, the way we cook our food, warm up and cool our houses and driving vehicles. All of these activities can put gas into the air. We get these gases from burning coal and other fossil fuels. These gases can affect the climate of a country. Another major source is the clearing or cutting down of trees or deforestation. According to the European commission, trees help regulate climate by absorbing carbon dioxide, which is an example of gas that affects the changing of the climate. So, if people will cut down trees it will

not be beneficial at all and the carbon dioxide stored in trees will be released causing much more effect to our climate. A scientific theory was made by a Swedish scientist named Svante Arrhenius in 1896, according to the American website. He concluded that human-based carbon dioxide emissions are enough reason to cause climate change. Also, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its fifth assessment in 2014 which states that it is extremely likely that human activities have been the dominant cause of climate change. Because of the continuation of climate change, it has affected animals, their habitats and us. The earth has gone through warming and cooling processes in the past. Natural causes that contribute to climate change are the sun’s intensity

and eruptions of volcanoes. These natural causes are still occurring today, but according to NASA, the influence of these causes is not enough or too small to explain the warming in recent decades. Rather, it is stated that humans have been the main reason. It is clearly stated that we, humans are the main cause of climate change because of our daily activities. It has been proven by different administrations and is continuously happening. Climate change already poses significant risk and has affected a wide range of natural systems. The problem is we do not see the reality around us. It is clear that we are the ones who are causing for our climate to change. We should work together to prevent this kind of problem. Otherwise, it will be a day less for our future generations living.

Diwata in the Sky: Small Satellite; Big Filipino Dream

S

tarted as a vision of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to develop the Philippines’ first small satellite, the Diwata project has served the country’s goal to reach the sky like what power nations had achieved in the past decades.

With the combined efforts of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the University of the Philippines, Hokkaido University, and Tohoku University the 50-kg cube-like microsatellite was built for several critical reasons.

MICHAEL SINABI, 10-SAMPAGUITA

Praised for providing “world best images”, this clear picture is of great help in locating affected areas by both natural and man-made disasters. The Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) mentioned that Diwata 1 was equipped with HPT and a fish lens camera making it an asset in capturing clearer images. In fact, Diwata-1 helped in the imaging of the recent Typhoon Ompong (international name Mangkhut) only proving its crucial role in ensuring safety in the country. The 900-million-peso project covers a series of space launch of microsatellites each with similar purpose of environmental and cultural observation but with updated features such as the deployable solar panels for higher power output and enhanced resolution cameras to secure a successful mission.

To provide post-disaster assessment like determining the extent of damage brought by natural calamities. Both the National Disaster Risk Reduction [Management] Council and PAGASA will receive this information.

To develop human resources. Satellite images sent would benefit students on research in their respective fields.

To observe Earth and monitor climate changes. The microsatellite forecasts weather as well as observer of cloud patterns and weather disturbances. This in turn can signal local weather agencies to prepare early for a possible strong typhoon.

4

To give urgent warnings. It features an amateur radio for emergency communication which is helpful if lines would be cut.

PHL-MICROSAT Program Leader and ASTI Director Dr. Joel Joseph Marciano hopes that this project would inspire ‘young children to go into space science…. And they would not only see this just a science fiction.’ The program will be succeeded by the Sustained Support for Local Space Technology and Applications Mastery, Innovation and Advancement (STAMINA4Space) which will cater to industrial and engineering factors to finally prepare the country in establishing the Philippine Space Agency. IT IS NOT A SECRET that items and products that one has been eyeing for a while now can be bought by allowing their fingers kiss the screen of their mobile phones or put weight on their “enter” key on the keyboard. On September 18, reports stating that ABS-CBN and UAAP stores have been victims of a colossal hacking scheme. Boundless Purchase Most times, when people are amazed at the amount of hassle a thing can reduce, they extensively use it, diminishing every boundary that should have been there with the intent to protect themselves from any harm. Undeniably, lack of orientation of the harmful risks that a thing can bring is what drives people into tactless decision including consumption. Anna Mejiano, a 26-year old call center agent admitted that she loves Lazada (a renowned E-Commerce platform) so much. She even stated

that starting from her toe accessories up to her hair antics, Lazada is to be thanked for. Anna’s cheeks even heat up as she admitted that she once purchased something for personal pleasures. Ms. Mejiano is just one of the many Filipino consumers who purchase online without any considerations that everything can be revealed in a snap. Credit cards can easily be penetrated not only due to advance technology but intermediate logic on how the world inside the internet works. ABS-CBN and UAAP stores are of high-value security but were victims of the major hacking scheme. It shows how careful acts should be observed from now on and that amidst progressing times, aggressive crimes are evidently part of it.

SPORTS EDITORIAL

Historia Bonanza H

osting Southeast Asian Games is nothing new to our country but the gargantuan effort, both from the state and competitors, to make this biennial celebration a momentous one holds a great amount of pressure to exceed the previous host’s achievement; playing it forward to generate the hype of showcasing sports and what it can do with the people of varied race and culture is a good ticket for a more promising bid. The preparation is a little bit short than usual, with the Philippines’ withdrawal but eventually pulling the past announcement back, contrasts the official’s assurance of fine and orchestrated plans. Though it is unofficial, the country had already spoiled what to expect such as the addition of sporting events specifically the long-overdue Arnis. It marks a great time for local sports to finally consider Filipino’s traditional heritage of self-defense. Not only that it gives a strong voice to the country’s position in terms of deciding on what sporting events to add but also opens a more inclusive and shared cultural appreciation in the region. Logistically speaking, Philippines just shrugs off creative talent force like in the controversial design of its logo. Labeled as ‘very elementary-like’, the proposed circular logo of the 30th SEAG represents the interconnected islands in the country. But ironically the design does not bind the artists in agreement thus calling for the agency to accept outside suggestions for far wider selection of inputs. Also, delegates are expected to reach 8750, the largest number in the history of Southeast Asian Games. Good thing we now have the largest indoor stadium in the continent – the Philippine Arena with a 55,000-seating capacity. To accommodate such

number, the government then built the New Clark City which will house sporting venues. It is known for its pollution-free zones that allow the players and officials to stay in a perfect climate. However, the cosmetic bias is disheartening knowing that the government opted to welcome visitors at the expense of indigenous people’s basic human rights. The displacement of Aetas in their own community and the grabbing of their land could manifest aggression and a faux uprising. Summit Express reported that up to 1.12 million residents and 800,000 workers will be sacrificed for this sporting event. Sure, the Philippines has created historical bonanza breaking one record at a time, but not without expressing true apologies to people affected through solid actions. We want to bring positive history to the table but not to people whose appetite has long gone before it was even served. Play it forward: culturally and physically. He first trained by himself through playing with his penny board that he got as a gift from his auntie. Wanting to pursue more of his passion, Rhaxs decided to enter a group of skateboarders earlier this year. At various street corners but mostly at Signal Village hallway, he spends his whole afternoon training and learning new tricks. Despite his age, he managed to provide his own skateboard by saving from his daily allowance. Fortunately, his parents are willing enough to support him in any way they can as they eventually buy him an actual skateboard. Unlike kids of his age who idly sits in front of their computers playing online games, the 13-year old seems to figure out what his passion is. Skateboarding has become a lifestyle for him albeit the dangerous nature of the sport. Now that a female Asian Games gold medalist in the name of Margielyn Didal has caught the attention of sports enthusiasts, Rhaxs has never been this motivated in pursuing his dream to set foot on a bigger, wider platform to showcase his skills. "Pangarap ko po talaga maging katulad ni idol Margielyn," said the young dreamer. Known for his determination, Rhaxs is ready to play no matter how worse his shoes are.
