r. Redmond Casquite, a Grade 9 T.L.E. teacher, painted vessels of plants to brighten up the appearance of his school area. After the construction of the four-storey building for the addition of the classroom that will be used by the Senior High School Students, he and the rest of the Brigada teams continued the cosmetic project and school cleanliness as part of ‘Mega School’ Signal Village National High School’s major project of the annual Brigada Eskwela implementation in May until June.

Part of the said project is shaping and burying floors of the covered court for more proper coverage of the sporting events expected to happen in the Division and at the possibility of hosting of Taguig City for the NCR Meet. Faucets and hand washing stations were built in key locations to cater students in need of water to cook or have experimentations with their subjects. “Mas malinis at mas masarap mag-aral kapag ganito yung environment na nakikita namin. Mas maluwag at mas vibrant kaya maiiwasan din ‘yong stampede tsaka siksikan kapag pasukan.” Mark Danielle Sobrepena, a student of Grade 11- STEM A said.

The trees are also furnished and the garden plants already resulted in the breakdown of the road that gave way to larger parking spaces and avoid overcrowding every Sunday.

BIR enacts Train Law Other says its a good thing that this new law will be a good way in living a healthy lifestyle.

"I think it is for the best that this TRAIN Law will not only imply the better being of our country but also for the Filipinos as well. With this we cannot buy our beverages anytime we want because of its price and that will help us start living healthy by not taking too much junkfoods in our body." Ira, a college student said. The most important part of the TRAIN Law is to reduce the burden of Filipino taxpayers. As stated in the law, an individual employee or self-employed tax payer would normally have to pay an income tax at a rate of 5% to 32% depending on one's bracket.

Dr. Ellen Agustin, Dean at the Makati Medical Center College (MMCC) and Directress at Philippine Women’s University, shared her experiences, especially regarding about her course, BS Psychology, BS Nursing and BS Radtech. On the other hand, Mr. Julio “Juls” Nidea focused on Accountancy, Economics and Arts. “The seminar helped me a lot especially now that I’ve been puzzled about the track that I want to take. Before this event, I am at

state of confusion. So yeah, now that it is clear, all that I have to do is to give my best as I venture on a new stage in my life” stated Lalaine Ubaldo, a Grade 10 student. The seminar lasted for about two hours. Both speakers highlighted the dilemmas, the brief background of each course and its requirements, and the implication of such programs to the students’ future working life. “This is oftentimes the most critical stage in their (Grade 10) life. Hopefully, this event somehow enlightened them on deciding which course is best suited for their needs and interests,” Dr. Agustin said in a post-interview. SVNHS launches dance workshop by Alexa Dulcero

T

o enhance the SVNHS student’s dancing skills while uplifting their confidence, Signal Village National High School (SVNHS) conducted a Dance Workshop every Saturday from 9 AM to 12 noon.

“Actually, the members of this workshop should have come from our Heralds Pep Squad but because they are also part of the Pep, they will definitely be overloaded with tasks and I, as their coach do not want that to happen. Good thing that when we have endorsed it over social media, many students surprisingly responded and actually volunteered to join. From that, we officially open the Dance Workshop!” Ms. Dinar Dimaapi stated. Approximately 30 to 40 students joined the workshop and they are not required to undergo any audition because as long as they are physically and mentally fit, they are qualified.

“What I really notice during our practice is that the art of dancing does not lie on how graceful you dance because it is not a talent anymore, it is a skill. You could attain it as long as you possess the required dedication and perseverance. It is for those who aspire in enhancing their own skills. Now, it is all up to you on how fast you want your pace in learning the different dance steps.” she added. Students who excel from the workshop extend their practice from 12 Noon to 2 PM in preparation for the National Dance Competition (NDC). Every Saturday, the trainers teach them different genres of dancing from

Hip-Hop, Tango, Boogey and many more, for them to be exposed in almost all types of dancing. “I believe that a person who does not know about a thing but he/she is determined to try and learn, beats the others who have the knowledge but is incompetent and undetermined. Generally, if you don’t have the courage to render devotion in dancing and spending more time, it will be a hindrance for you. After all, passion says it all.” she concluded. A great progress is seen among the students who joined the workshop. They are glad because they learned something from it and they are glad that this workshop improved their social life. [S]

Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, yellow journalism spreads like wildfire among the modern society wherein, various kinds of information are within ordinary people’s reach, it is nearly confusing whether this or that – is true or not.

These claims of fake news revolving the internet world continues to seep in among the minds of the readers and internet users, and perhaps, Google and Facebook’s attempt to shut down the rotation of fake news may not yet have a significant impact. It’s too soon yet to say that it’ll clamp down the aftermath, for it looks like some so called ‘journalists’ and ‘writers’ make fake news and yellow journalism as a way of living, and of course, to stir up arguments among people and to influence public opinion- in short, brainwashing. We, Filipinos, are very particular on stating things, and sharing our opinions about issues specially on the internet. And as a hunch, even though these fake news cause confusions on the relevance of current issues, they continue to circulate. As an observation, a lot of Filipinos share and revive fake news, knowingly or unknowingly, with friends, family and others.

Numerous devious methods are used by modern cheater. In fact, cheating by copying homework or using crib sheets is somewhat insignificant when compared with today’s high tech tactics. These include the use of cellphones; calculators preprogrammed with “extra information”; miniature cameras hidden in clothing which are used to relay questions to a helper elsewhere; devices that transmit infrared messages to nearby classmates; and even interpret sites that contain completed term papers on virtually any subject! Educators are trying to reverse this alarming trend towards cheating. But the task is not easy. After all, not every student or teacher agrees on what constitutes cheating. In one survey, lack of preparation was found to be the number one reason why many students choose to cheat. Other students, compelled by a competitive climate at school or by the high expectations of their parents, conclude that they are left with no choice. For some, constant pressure to get good grades results to cheating. As the book, “ The Private Life of the American Teenagers” puts in, “ there is something out of balance in a system in which pressure is so intense that the satisfaction of learning is often

According to the Philippine Star, Sen. Grace Poe on October 4, 2017 expressed concern over the proliferation of misleading news and fake information which, if unchecked, "cultivates a culture of lying." The Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media started an inquiry into the proliferation of fake news and invited officials of the Presidential Communications Operations Office, bloggers and journalists.

"If fake news is not challenged, it will create lynch mobs out of certain people turning them into an army of character assassins who can be unleashed with just one meme to destroy an idea, a person or an institution," Poe said.

While much has been written about fake news, scholars have published a limited amount of peer-reviewed research on the topic. Studies that examine fake news and the spread of misinformation more broadly are made to help journalists better understand the problem and the impacts ate the same time. Some other resources that may be helpful are also cooperating on debunking fake news stories. A national and international collaboration of newsrooms, social media platforms and fact-checking are launched to battle fake news. [S]

Your holding to high standards of honesty and refusing to compromise cheating imparts real value to the good grades you obtain. You bring home from school one of the best gifts you can give to your parents. Consequently, you treasure a clean conscience and have the joy.

The senator noted that fake news has become pervasive through the use of socalled bots and trolls, making fake social media accounts swaying public opinion, shaping public discourse, affecting social interaction and influencing government. "Fake news is the e-version of the budol-budol, which many of our people unable to distinguish fact from fiction fall victims to. It is not even farfetched that in the future fake news can trigger wars," she said.

“Fake news” is a term that can mean different things, depending on the context. Much of the fake news that flooded the internet during the 2016 election season in the USA consisted of articles with false information or perpetuating theories. Some news organizations published reports spotlighting examples of hoaxes, fake news and misinformation on Election Day 2016.

"If purveyors are allowed to get away with their lies, they embolden government officials to also lie in order to escape accountability, crush dissent and commit illegal acts with impunity," Poe said in her opening statement.

The Senate hearing seeks to identify the role of the government in addressing the lack of news literacy. The senator cited Taiwan as an example where children in school are being taught media literacy to help them identify news from hoaxes.

Granted, the temptation to cheat may be strong, one must avoid moral pitfall! But how to do it is still a question left unanswered even by those righteous and religious. First, remember, you are in school to learn. No more no less. There might seem to be little benefit in accumulating facts you may never use but by circumventing this process through cheating, you hinder your ability to learn and make practical use of your knowledge. Real understanding is never obtained without effort. More often than not, it has cost. You need to take a serious view of studying and preparing.

Pleasure Over Pressure “Let education be their pleasure, not their pressure. ”

A

lbert Einstein once said, “Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

This quotation alludes to a long-standing allegorical framework. It is inappropriate to judge an animal by focusing on a skill which the creature does not possess. A fish is specialized to swim superbly, and its ability to climb a tree is non-existent or rudimentary. In the domain of education this allegory has been employed repeatedly for more than one hundred years. Hence, this quotation is built on ideas that have been in circulation among educators for many decades. This quote really goes all the way exactly with the current education system today. We must always remember that every child has a special gift within them. They are

born with skills and abilities that can’t be compared to others. Educators must learn to focus on this special abilities of a student rather than his weaknesses. In China, they know the skill or talent of a kid, and focuses in it. We must not always do the mainstream ‘jackof-all-trades dream for every student. Education is a blessing, not a curse. Learning is not a one-size-fits-all kind of clothing. Think about this. If there are four patients with different sicknesses, and give them the same medicine, would all of them heal and benefit? A big no. Let education be their pleasure, not their pressure. [S]

TEACHING FORCE

The Challenge of Accepting Change An Article for Intercultural Flexibility Michael N. Evans

Senior is actually easy kung titingnan lang natin siya ng mabuti. What makes it hard is sa Senior High, unlike sa Junior High, requires more of pagiging industrious and hardworking than to be intellectual. -Kent Ivan Florino (HUMSS)

Being able to choose any strand or track in shs gives Senior High Students the opportunity and somewhat ease to exert more perseverance and effort to their studies. But this doesn’t mean that there is a certain easy track. Every track or strand carries a boulderlike burden, and will never find a easy way or a shortcut towards professionalism. -Jaimie Naigan (STEM)

My thoughts about my life as a Senior High School is pretty unexpected. I thought Senior High School would just be 2x harder that Junior High School but I eventually realized it’s 5x harder. We, students from STEM strand, are slowly becoming cyborgs. Stress is slowly killing us but being a Senior High School is actually exciting, you’ll encounter different lessons, persons and objectives that may help you in the near future. -Dale Miguel Paloma (STEM) In my account, I thought that SHS is only a nuisance, a hindrance to my way to college life. But as I experienced it, SHS is also a big leap, in the non complicated way, that helped me realize the significance of it. It’s a step that will help to the reality. So far, my SHS life has been good to me (exemption to the workloads hahahahha) -Jennifer Pajaron (TECH-VOC, ICT)

SHS life? Its Hard but I know that it will be worth it. At first, I thought that it will be a waste of time but I was wrong. As I go through my journey, I may face struggles and difficulties but I know that I can learn a lot. And now, taking this life ia my first step to reach my goals. Without this? I will not be ready in taking my college degree. Shs life is hard and we have no choice but to fight for it. -Clarissa Joy Aquinde (TECH-VOC, Pharmacy)

My life in senior high school is better than the past junior high. I dont know, at this moment of time, i can say that this might be the time where i can meet real friends and real people. I can say that, i was so comfortable having interactions with my classmates that has the same preference and ideas like mine. All in all, i can conclude that i am happily contented and might be prepared enough to learn new things and face the upcoming college days, as well. -Cedie Lipardo (HUMSS)

My SHS life is quite good and unexpected as well, because before ,I thought that my SHS life would ruin my life like what others posted in social media but unexpectedly I could say that SHS is exactly the opposite of what they are trying to say. SHS is a great field that sharpens your innate ability. The things that you cannot do in JHS,you can do it in SHS - the good side of yours-hidden skills. One more thing about SHS that I highly appreciated, our time is flexible. -Jonathan Llames (ABM)

“Seeing change as an opportunity rather than a mere necessity manifests the general understanding of what change truly is.”

T

he inevitability of change is indispensable. This pose a great demand for open-minded, compassionate citizens given the commitment of the Philippines to UNESCO’s education-based programs including the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). However, this so-called ‘change’ varies its impact to one’s cultural understanding and flexibility. When someone suddenly attempts to adjust the routine we are accustomed to, or behaves against our standards, expect an unfavorable response. In the classroom alone, students with the Southern accents, especially those in Visayan and Mindanao regions, suffer discrimination all because of their strong dialectical tone in reading the ‘e’ sound. The laughs drawn from classmates reflect the lack of knowledge with language diversity which is a critical element of culture. When we listen to the sound of our partner makes instead of the message, we isolate ourselves from the ultimate goal of global citizenship education—that is embracing and celebrating differences.

When we recognize change, we realize the need for it. Otherwise, we build a wall between us. Considering the major cultural shifts like same-sex marriage, women empowerment and cultural migration, a glimpse in the past appears to be oblivious and non-essential. These trends, no matter how inconvenient and controversial as they may seem, have to be considered not simply to cope with it, but more importantly to invite positive social movements. Consequently, imagining a world where prejudices and skepticism are suppressed would no longer be a product of fiction. For instance, The Philippines has shown a significant change in promoting gender equality. Gone are the days of the cliched idea of a ‘housewife’ as more and more women of today play a vital role

in the community from being a corporate executive to even as high as a President. Unfortunately, this culture of seeing the ability rather than the identity is still a predicament in Asia as a whole even up to this day with Arab nations mostly practicing the patriarchal system. In education, the migration particularly of Muslims from Zamboanga Peninsula and neighboring towns to urban cities like Taguig, where a certain barangay is known for its Moro-dominated population like Maharlika Village, require a change in the curriculum and school policies to avoid religious biases and supremacy. Halal foods are served in the canteen, while prayers turn universal. By doing so, students discover the value of respect towards other faith. We open young minds to adopt and adapt to non-members. This in return address the gap between cultural dominance and social responsibility.

“Doing your homeworks does not only make your grades high or your parents proud, but benefits you extraordinarily too.”

Also, women and gay rights are more protected either in cyber or social dimension through clubs that serve as watchdogs against perpetrators. Catcalling, as generally tolerated and/or ignored, is now found to be offensive and even criminal to some. As a result, people practice gender sensitivity as opposed to silenced culture. With the students’ awareness of the global issues come in full disclosure, a room of one-sided view can be extended and challenged to meet the longstanding desire for complete change--a change that is unconditional and permanent, encouraging and inclusive. Seeing change as an opportunity rather than a mere necessity manifests the general understanding of what change truly is. [S]

Assignments: Bane or Boon

A

ccording to a survey conducted by the journalists, 40 out of 50 students want to have few assignments each day rather than overload assignments from every subjects.

Assignments or homeworks are designed for students to recall their previous lessons and can practice their retentive memory skills upon answering them at home. As a student, homeworks have been a part of our daily living as a “student”. Numerous arguments about this topic come out, as some educators insist on its importance in learning extension while some researches reject the idea for it limits the potential of students to academics in building themselves or learning in other opportunities such as doing their projects, reviewing for their upcoming exams and mostly in joining curricular activities or contests.

There is even a proposition in the Senate requiring teachers to stop giving assignments during weekend so students can make up with their family members. This is a way to relax and decongest their hectic schedule for the week. It is a good suggestion to think that overcrowded lessons are more than saturating for students to lose their focus as they are thinking of to-do lists simultaneously. On the lighter side, given the importance of assignments especially in improving time management, it would be better to find it as a challenge rather than a burden to reach your goals in life. People will look up to you as a responsible student, so set a good

example to everyone. Motivate them by doing your assignments on time without relying to anyone. Do not be the type of student who comes to school early to hunt for someone’s answer before the class. Work interdependently instead. The result of the survey cannot be taken for granted either. It must be taken into consideration for the improvement of quality teaching. Remember that students learn best when they feel motivated and encouraged. Therefore, teachers have to be open and considerate when giving extra work for their students. Make them understand the worth of what they are doing, and surely it will generate a good feedback [S]

Letter to the Editor Good day, Miss EIC! These days, there have been a lot of class suspensions and though it is a good thing(at least for me) that the class has been suspended, it becomes a curse whenever indirect, inaccurate and incomplete announcements were given. Actually, the bigger problem is when any announcement is not even present. So as an organization who caters the dissemination of information, I want to recommend to make an action about this. Thank you. Greetings, Ella! We deeply appreciate your concern regarding this topic specifically to how our organization should act. We are happy to tell you that our team has already worked regarding that conflict. In fact, our Facebook page, “The Signal Highlights” has been existent since April of this year. We post timely, relevant and profound announcements. Check it now and spread it’s existence to your friends, teachers and colleagues out there.

Through the assigned program, every officers are allowed to roam around every buildings while collecting recyclable materials in exchange to money. All sections, including tracks from SHS, are obligated to pass their own trash as well as the teachers of their own faculty. Once totaled, the most active and charitable section will be awarded a "special gift". The program continues to accept garbages after the competition. "In return then, lots of sections actively engage in our project and [we] then sell the collected materials and we are going to use the money that we have earned for our future projects" The goal of the campaign, according to Versola, is to promofe cleanliness, fund raising, and leadership. "Being clean and well-kept reflects to your personality so that is what we are trying to improve here - the ideal image of Signal," added Versola. SSG's action plan provides various activity every month that helps beautify and fortify the condition of the school. [S]

The Death ‘Cure’

ecent news and stories unfold as the only dengue vaccine swarmed alarming issue about its safety worldwide. A brand named ‘Dengvaxia’ has caused severe problems to those who had not yet had dengue, read the findings of Sanofi Pasteur, its drug manufacturer.

DOH Epidemiology Bureau reported 24,958 dengue cases from January to March, the usual morbid season. It comes with an astonishing 3,000 cases in its first week with slightly high fatality, occurring the most in Central Visayas, Central Luzon, CALABARZON and NCR. The percentage might be lower from last year, but who did not notice about the calumny vaccine that stole the limelight from the dengue itself. The Dengvaxia, according to DOH, is supposed to be given in three doses, after then no follow-ups were checked if there are any adverse effects or nothing at all. This created a stir that the vaccine was a product of negligence and corruption. Our country

tolled hundreds of thousands cases annually. With the threat of Dengvaxia, it would double as much as the rate of morbidity. The intriguing cure sparked way back in 2015 and was used as a topic in NSPC 2016 for Science Category. The Dengvaxia came back to life after taking the life of the children in Bulacan. There are errors and loopholes to convince us that Aquino is the pertinent reason of this problem, wrote Philippine Daily Inquirer. On the other hand, Sanofi Pasteur have already stated that they have cleared the issue but did not expounded their fault.

As someone who has not

experienced dengue, being worried and constantly fearing what the hospital would gave the patient instead of thinking about the sickness, is disconcerting. It revolts the safety standard of hospital system in our country, both to dengue and non-dengue patients. The trial will come and when the time the government have found out what causes the problem itself may decrease the signs of fatality especially now that the ‘vaccinated population’ is seriously increasing. No one is capable of becoming efficient and flawless in medication, but it is everybody’s responsibility to protect oneself against the false cure. [S]

W

ho would hate to wander the wondrous place of the United States of America? For instance, walking beneath the thoroughfare of the ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame’ and having photographs and souvenirs from the ‘Universal Studios’, no one would resist the bliss of the bacon and egg munched with the prim of the pancakes during breakfast whence the atmosphere is frigid and snowy. “Being in the USA is truly astonishing” the common tongue of the people I asked with about their visit to the place. Its zest to make a man feels comfortable, is the luck of whoever dreams to be one. The place where dreams are made of and granted. Granted as it is the country where the two Signalians are busy continuing their Grade 10 Junior High Life at. With the aid of the Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange Student Program or the KL-YES Program and through English Access Micro scholarship program of the U.S. Embassy Manila, Mehlora Kyra Y. Aquino and Justine Luke C. Carandang are the lucky recipients of the program’s scholarship, from Sixty-six (66) Access SVNHS scholar applicants. Carandang is in Portland while Aquino is in Texas as they will both stay for one school year.

TREASURING TEXAS & PORTAL TO PORTLAND

Through ‘Messenger’, I got the chance of reaching them, last December 2017. Mehlora intentionally contacted me through video call asking for my help to teach her play pak ganern (a famous game popularized by Vice Ganda, last year) as she will be introducing it to her American classmates. All along, I asked various queries regarding her personal life stream and daily routines in USA. Meanwhile, I sent requests pertaining to Luke’s life roll. As a response, he sent a voice call stating his answers. The interactions happening miles away but seemingly occurring in just a near distance, goes this way: At first, I asked for Mehlora’s journey in preparing her prerequisites needed before her scheduled flight. She had a terrible yet learning experience. Was it a smooth flow in processing your papers? Actually, I can say that it was not that rough as what I was expecting. You know what? It was just a long process. Those orientations were just easy. You just need to listen for hours inside the hotel.

She said confidently and obviously ready for the flight. But complying things like passport, Department of Social Welfare Development (DSWD) Travel Clearance for minors like me, birth certificate and other requirements was not easy to accomplish due to the slow flow performance of our government sectors, while the KL-YES had set some deadlines.

Unfortunately, a series of luckless events happened to her. The very tragic part is here. We were hotel-arrested days before our scheduled flight, which is on Wednesday. Friday night, the faculty had an inspection of our important documents needed to present at the Airport. I was anxious by that time because I lost my DSWD Clearance. I misplaced it somewhere in our house. I immediately called my father, and so, I found out that it was accidentally thrown by my grandmother. I couldn’t help but cry.

As she was saying the last sentence, an ironic expression appeared on her face, laughing at the circumstances she faced. That was the time I approached the facilitator and asked permission to go home because the government offices are closed during weekends. Unfortunately, my father and I were not able to arrive on time at the office. Consequently, I left with no choice but to return to the hotel.

She was hopeless by that time but instead of being downgraded, she took it as her motivation to proceed. Then, how did you able to accomplish your files given the short period of time? How did you handle the pressure? Early morning of Tuesday, my father fetched me up at our hotel to accompany me in the DSWD office. Luckily, we also arrived early in the office. But the faith was really testing me. The woman in-charge requested a recommendation letter which I thought would be useless since I already have the requirements needed. Again, we were caught off guard, so left with not much option but to produce one. Unwantedly, we went back and forth from the computer shop to the office countless times, since she demanded something else in the letter. In brief, it was a successful process in reproducing

another copy of my travel clearance. But the downfall was instead I was roaming around inside the Malacanang Palace and meeting President Rodrigo Duterte, I was busy requesting for my lost clearance. Instead of panicking, I took it as a blessing.

she emphasized positively. And that was my first story before I made it here in Texas,

I also dined a query about the fluidity of both students’ daily routine. How is your daily routine there compared here in the Philippines. Have you made some adjustments? I did not make much adjustments since my host family is very supportive of me. There, I used to eat pandesal, champorado, sopas and other typical Filipino breakfasts. I iron my own school uniform and practice school performance before entering the school. Meanwhile, here in Texas, I eat cereals for breakfast, preparing casual outfit for school and waiting for my host sister to drive me to school. Here in Portland, I am the one making breakfast for myself. I just need to prepare cereals and pour milk in it. In contrast with the traditional morning breakfast in the Philippines, it is already prepared in our dining table. Moreover, at home, waking up early is easy. But here, if I set my alarm at a certain time feeling the cold air, there is an automatic extension of it due to the force that is keeping my body adhere in bed. In addition, my host parents drive me to school here while I commute going to SVNHS.

Mehlora’s facial expression was undeniably joyous as she adjusts minimally, while Luke’s grumpy tone signifies otherwise. Since there are lots of American delicious delicacies, I asked Luke about the confinement of foods and their tastes dined in front of him. Honestly, I don’t have so much issues about the taste of the American foods, since I love them. But the only difference here is that the specialties contain greater amount of oil and sugar compared to Pinoy’s. The main reason why I gained some weight. I couldn’t really help but eat a lot.

The gap between the systematize curriculum of the two countries, the expectations and the standards given to every student and their insights are obviously different since their places are almost edges apart. As there is a time allotted to feel that they are American citizens, is a responsibility needed to be performed of being one. How do you find the American school system?

Honestly, I really love going to school. It is relaxing and motivating for me, since I experience less stress. Here in Randolph Highschool Texas State, students are obliged to walk to another room every after class, unlike in our country the teacher is the one who makes effort. Instead of cool air conditioner, we have here warm air conditioner. They also grant iPads for the students as the school works and notes are mostly typed. Moreover, we do not conduct so much role play rehearsals and reporting practices unlike in the Philippines.

Perennially, a new makeshift of environment and platform in the US culture and tradition is now facing her. On the other hand, we are freely allowed to choose our own classes, four mandatory and three elective classes. Theatre play, art class, choir, band, cheerleading and athletics are the diversions of the elective classes we are free to choose.

Seemingly enjoying her new study system, she is patent feeling the zest of the flow of her education life. Here in Damascus Christian school, the teachers acquire the patience needed for the students, especially for those who have difficulties in catching up lessons. We also use books. But the subjects here are multiple. I could say that even though the two countries have their systematic differences, still they set the proper standards for the students in building them to be globally competitive.

rt roots from various reservoir. It can spring up from life as much as it can cradle from death. Art hones teachers but it indoctrinates students. by Lalaine Jhana Ubaldo

Echoing the Information, Highlighting the Truth

Highway to Appreciative Learning

Yearly, approximately 50 students are given a chance to forge at the Cultural Center of the Philippines or CCP where every delightful quest for art happens. Led by Mrs. Jasmine Dichoso, a grade 8 English teacher, this pursuit for art appreciation continues to shower numerous students with invaluable lore. TIMELESS GEMSTONE “It was an experience that I will never forget! I love how the performers were able to grasp my heart despite the huge irony between my preference in performances and the actual act that they’ve done. My experience in CCP brought me to a realization that art is indeed timeless. It has reached the earliest society and up until now, it hasn’t lost its ability to captivate one’s heart. Overall, it is an experience that I would like to taste once more.” Jhema Asuncion, a grade 10 student stated.

HIGHLIGHTS

Enthusiasm, excitement and nostalgia were immensely evident in Jhema’s face as she recollects her experience in CCP. She even talked about a silly

memory that everytime her eyes kiss the sight in the rostrum, she can’t help but to be filled with so much awe and admiration. She gave emphasis to the thought that our country has held a gemstone that cannot be stolen even by the most skillful thief – art. EMOTIONAL AVENUE “To be honest, before the day in CCP, I was so depressed. Mom and I had an argument about how I’ve been giving so much time in school while my duties at home were all left hanging.” Annah Jeremiah Saavedra, a grade 8 student, started. Upon talking to her, I find it somehow strange that her words do not match her facial expressions at all. She’s telling a story of hate but her eyes glisten with so much gentle compassion. “That brought me out of the mood and I hesitated if still going will do me any good. Thankfully, I made the right decision and just when the play started, I got this strange feeling inside. I don’t know but I feel

like I’m being comforted...” she continued. At that moment, I knew what was coming. “I was way over my head at that time but the longer I let my focus be angled at the performance, the greater comfort I feel seeping. That feeling made me realize that art can be a vessel of comfort. The colors, the heartfelt lines... just merely everything became my comfort.” she concluded. With that, I finally reconciled the deep emotion of adoration in her eyes and the culprit is, once again, art. Indeed, art can be found anywhere. It is even evident in places that we least expect. Art enables emotions to be free along the borderlines of moderation. It might sound ironic but that’s just how it is. Art is as technical as it is limitless and so incorporating students in places where art is present, they’ll be able to acquire the very essence of being creative while being compliant. [S]

Sembreak to Remember by Lalaine Jhana Ubaldo

T

he closest star to the earth smiles brightly and complementing it is the lovely Gumamela basking on its rays. Looking up a Mango tree, some silly birds are singing their sweet songs to tease the dog furiously glaring at them. This alluring sight is the image of a perfect Picasso painting. But to Lalaine Ubaldo, the colors are too bright to handle. It doesn’t match her heart at all. The pain she’s enduring had made her numb and the distant memories of semestral break seem doubtful to let her go. No student will be disgusted if a teacher finally declared that it’s officially the start of the semestral break because figuratively, under that term are the exhilarating facts such as NO ASSIGNMENTS, NO EXAMS and NO TROUBLE. Sadly, not all sembreak could be enjoyed just like how everyone would expect. It can be very dreadful which will make it hard to be forgotten. “Don’t get too close for when you’re attached, it impossible to pull back.” - Was what my late great grandmother said when I wept for the neighbor’s chicken who died. “ Lalaine stated while bitterly looking at a certain cap she’s been holding the entire interview. Her sembreak started to be very plain. With no permanent hobby, she has decided spending the whole week binging on Japanese shoujo mangas while eating her undying cheese crackers. At some time, or specifically when the manga is too

cliché, she’ll switch on pulling an all-nighter reading the books of Mitch Albom which usually make her end up rethinking about life. Moreover, she actually described herself as boring. Living with a repetitive process, she sure thinks of it as trivial. But it was until a knock on their door resounded. Everything will change and just like that, it was not soon that she saw her unpredictable sembreak just around the corner. Standing in front of the doorway is a man who’s undoubtedly in mid-40’s. He is undeniably fat and is close to being bald. Wearing a tight blue shirt, his stomach is obviously big but judging on his tired posture, he must have come from somewhere far. Lalaine didn’t recognize him at first but as soon as the light stroked his face, every memory came fresh. “Uncle!” she happily endeared to Rudolfo, his grandfather.

It was at that moment

when Lalaine recalled how enthusiastic her grandpa is. Entering the house having such a comic face is too remarkable to forget. She even said that when he was asked about a wife, he claimed that he had three but are all dead. And when he asked of the reason, “It was because of a shellfish. Give your Heart a break

nce there were two squirrels. The first one wanted to give the chestnut to his lover but she was on the other side of the cliff. The second one was patiently waiting while the first one was eagerly hoping for his feelings to reach his beloved. And so with all his might, he threw the chestnut ...and it happily landed in the hands of the second squirrel. The end. A simple story that genuinely enveloped the true scenario in a campus journalist’s life. Widening student’s minds, disseminating information, spreading awareness and stimulating evaluative thinking are what it does. Be it with news, editorial, feature or sports. Every article has a story to tell. Behold, it is campus journalism. Pens, pencils and papers are stacked on the table. You could see the scribes either typing with their computer or writing their designated articles on a sheet of paper. Forming their ‘literary art’ with motivation, passion and excitement, they never stop. Hands may get tired, but the thrill of writing something about a recent event or phenomenon is like making a delicious cake topped with salivating chocolate bars and afterwards giving it to the person who’s most dear to you.

Capturing photos and thinking of attention-grabbing headlines are not a piece of cake. Constructing strategies on how to convey their opinions is also hard to do. That is why it takes time to formulate or make things work in the field of journalism. Every article is scrutinized and critiqued by the trainers but the best part is that regardless of the criticism, scribes are challenged to strive hard on expressing themselves. Truly, journalists are giving their best in the name of service to the students because they don’t want them to be ignorant and that they want students to know what is happening. And just like how the squirrel threw the chestnut with all his might, journalists also render their devotion and perseverance to let their feelings reach the students. [S]

Moreover, while busy feeling the zest of little break, 4 out of 5 students would pick their best buddy by that time... gadgets. One of the delightful feelings that arouses the mood of every Signalians is when they hear that the classes are suspended. In addition, to feel the ambiance being away from school works and ample examinations, it is a great time to hang out with modern technologies, indeed. Modern world gave birth to modern hobbies that paved the way as the friend of everybody. A friend

that keeps the mind of a student active even when the classes are inactive. Like the Korean Dramas and Korean Popular Music which are being patronized by the Signalians. Another are the modems of the new world, facebook, twitter, instagram and other social media cites where they can feel their freed. Amidst of crisis in school, most Signalians would wish to transcend themselves in a place of making memories with their family and hanging out with their friends instead of depriving in a bulge of activities. Quality time with self and family is in need by the students at the very moment. During class suspensions, instead of scanning notes and integrating in modules of activity, most students would like to be in a world where they feel that they are not working robots. To feel their freed and to access their hobbies and wants. A way of giving price for themselves, a way of having a little break. [S]

ALL ALL THING THING

It's been a year now. Being an SHS student is indeed an unexpected ride. It seemed out of the ordinary and the concept itself is a bit strange. For starters, it was likea flash of light that's blinding because the light is full of heavy tasks such as a never ending unread readings, writeups, and a whole lot of stress. The pressure is not something that can be easily regarded since k-12 is now looked at as a main opportunity for Filipino students to reach employment. Many were skeptical of it's implementation because of the perception of practicality, some say it's a waste of time, enerygy and money. But there were people who looked on the bright

side and see the K-12 curriculum as a beacon for opportunitues.

I have always loved to read books and write, that's why I landed on the HUMSS strand. Like the rest of my senior high schoolmates in Signal Village National High School, they chose the strand that will enhance their skilss and abilities and help them prepare for their tertiary education or employment. In senior high school, things have drastically changed. You have to come out of your comfort zone, do whatever it takes to pass or even get honors, multitaskinh and discover more of yourself. You'll learn how to handle stress, deal with uncooperative group mates, and manage your time, time for your studies, time for your family and time for

SHS HS

yourself. Most of the SHS population in the country takes in to social media what they feel about being a SHS student. Drinking mugs of coffee to stay awake or sane is an effort to keep up with the pace. Upcoming tests and submission dates, and many more things you should give your sleepless nights to. And you’ll end up having bloodshot eyes and tons of dark bags under your eyes. But the moment you see your final draft, output and film receiving a high grade you feel proud and tap yourself for a.good job. All the hard work paid off. And every output/task gives a lesson to learn. You have to settle for the best, deal with various kind of stress, control your emotions, and face the problems head on. Because complaining about these things aren’t gonna help us grow. [S]

RoomGroom Learning by Lalaine Jhana Ubaldo

Wise men say that knowledge talks about one’s future but the wiser declares that workplace decides success.

There are approximately 156 rooms in Signal Village National High School (SVNHS), two shifts (morning afternoon) and over 9,000 students. Before Senior High School has been implemented, SVNHS got no problem with rooms especially because the shifts are controlled but since 2015, there is a major shift in the balance of room distribution. LIGHT OF LEARNING There was a study stating that the lighting in a room contributes a lot to how fast an individual comprehends data. It either aids or procrastinates one’s digestion of information, emphasizing the fact that workplace is an important thing to take note of when it comes to

studying.

We asked Dale Miguel Paloma, a Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) student and he said,”I am so aggravated with how rooms were often the hindrance to our classes. I mean, there are instances when we won’t have our class because we have no room to have class with, in the first place. I hope the problem with rooms will be eradicated soon” Due to the conflict in rooms, schedules and such, students are being hindered from studying more effectively. SPACE OF SUBSTANCE “I find myself

understanding things easier when I reside on a well-ventilated place. I don’t even know how but it feels like everything is just seeping into my thick skull easily.” Dale added while happily looking around the room.

Found in the corner of the room is a pile of books that fits aesthetically with the white-tinted room. Every student who enters the room immediately stops at that certain segment of the room. Indeed, workplace plays a major role in the learning process of students. So if one would be able to provide an efficient and studentfriendly workplace, then it would give them a more enjoyable life in school. [S]

Additionally, in the survey held, half of the respondents admitted that school works and assignments is the main reason why they stay up late at night. The other factors are inability to commit several tasks, either by “overworking” or procrastination. Thus, 18 respondents said it affected them through grades and physical changes. According to Charmaine Asejo, Grade 12 student from Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), sleep deprivation is a common problem that needs solution yet not always talked about. IN PARTIAL PARTICIPATION for the Science Month, The Innovative Mind Society (TIMSOC) set 2nd Science Exhibit in Senior High School (SHS) Science Laboratory. The event features inventions, models, and artworks related to the theme “Science for the People”. TIMSOC highlights use of applied scientific concepts essentially related to certain SHS courses and bringing them into life. It includes manual manmade machineries made out of wood, paper, stickers, sticks, rubber bands, and other unconventional material. Other recreational imitation includes pinball, toy car, marble cannon, catapult, clawing machine, and Ferris wheel. The laboratory also showcases various replicas of

scientific concepts. The spotlight of the exhibit is called ‘Trash Art’ created by Grade 11 students from STEM strand; its centerpiece is a mythological figure named Atlas. “It is originally not a part of the exhibit but when I first saw it, I was amazed too,” said Prayheart Lumabao, Grade 12 – STEM student. According to Lumabao, “It represents serious problem that needs to be solve as early as possible.” The lab also featured projects such as fossilized plants, survival kits, the universe, chemical

analysis, and winery. Ryan Zamudio, a TIMSOC member, expresses the exhibit itself as significant from STEM students and that it helps discover ideas by analyzing possible solution straight ahead. As for Ms. Robeemane Balisi, Science Teacher and TIMSOC Adviser, it pinpoints the goal of the theme this year. “Science is important because it is essential for the enhancement of the life that people thought to be different.” [S]

dmit it or not. We have used Facebook more than necessary in our lives. It was a bit of a trouble nowadays that you can’t do things and make meaningful tasks out of our hands.

This is the common problem occuring in teenage years right now and it should be kept seriously. You are ought to know that by preoccupying the Internet in your life has advantages and disadvantages in you, but don’t let the second one to enter your life permanently. In terms of it can cause psychological problems in our teenage years. Example of this is Depression, Guilt and Loneliness. Internet is fun in a way that you are being summoned to use it in daily purpose and you have no control with it. A trap that you can’t get out anymore or an emotional barrier to you as a person. Internet nowadays also use other personas to hurt or bash persons online. The negativity it brings to someone may the other reason why people die by their own’s hand. It should be stop and

should make way to put social and psychological cessation. Why not free yourself with your cell phones and go outside or do something productive to oneself? Assuring many life-long qualities and integration to society, blending you with others and others unto you. If there really is a problem within, consult a counselor or tell it to your parents so they will do something with it, not just being stuck with the problems per se. We can use Internet in searching things you want, only if we can use it in a very good way then the Internet may be the greatest invention the entire race have done to us. Care your own health and stay online in your own mind. We must see to it that Internet will be a bridge for us to seek the world, not be a barrier that will hinder us from the beautiful things of life. It’s system must not eat us, instead, it must be the other way around. [S]

The local government created an actual room built for contingency plans which is shaped to endure calamities and lessen possible injuries and deaths. Its advanced technology and methodologies are also addressed to demonstrate the importance of 21st Century Learning. In addition, standing teachers guided the TIMSOC members to show what is inside one of the most recent invention from DOST. Hall of Fame The air-conditioned classroom is built using modern

At first, these cards are presented into 2D drawing art but with the help of an application (downloaded earlier by TIMSOC), it can turn itself into 4D virtual creation at any angle. Marybeth Arroyo, a Grade 12 - STEM also, added that at any given time, they can be pushed into different position and stature. According to Susan Cooper, dealing intimacy is not easy especially if the woman entered the stage of ‘Postmenstrual Period’ or PMS. Moreover, the period of menopause is one of the result of not only being unable to be impregnated, but also the change of hormones in the body. However, extreme mood swing and depression might be a different question and giving a welcoming treat is not the given answer. Mid-way Crisis Normal couples usually intervene actions that they made to promote and maintain the stability of their relationship. Women on their menopausal period do not.

Female tend to be unfulfilled and disruptive in an everyday basis. That is to think that hormones (including the endorphins that makes us happy) and the chemicals inside their bodies dramatically drop off to this stage. According to Mayo Clinic research, the postmenstrual changes are what is considered to be the emotional and mental disorders of the sexual reference. This only means that perhaps all women are not experiencing lately but it could happen to the majority, no matter what. The same way women felt loss of pleasure and having

rnis is the National Martial Arts of the Philippines but while it was called our National Martial Arts only a few of our countrymen know about this sport, but not Kate Papa.

Arnis is a traditional local martial arts which is weaponbased using sticks, knives, and various improvised ammunition. This concept confuses people to associate the sport to male category only. Luckily, the sport is open for both sexes since its inception in Signal Village National High School in 2011. “A special place in my heart” It is how Kate see the sport. She fell in love with it at the very first training she had. Kate Papa is one of SVNHS’s prominent female arnis player together with 36 other players a few of which are Kris Emiselle Naño, Andrea Bugaring, Samantha Regala, Kate Papa, Eleine Tabujara, Alyssa Enriquez, Dhine Cruz, Berly Krisna Decena and Giline Mendoza. A friend convinced her to try the sport after seeing her potential. As a student, an athlete like Kate struggles mostly with

time. Although she initially received an enormous support from her parents, her bruises from training left them second-guessing. Her passion in the sport convinces them to continue reaching her goal. “Arnis training is the best we have. Our friendly coaches are always there for us especially when training gets rigid.” She uses the sport as a way to express her strength and agility. On being a female player Being a female athlete in a sports dominated by men is not a problem for both the coach and players. “Right from its birth, we thought of inclusive group,” said coach Celdie Lagrimas. The women in the team are not discriminated as they equally receive the same level of training like push ups, core muscle exercises and weapon combat simulation. “I feel respected for being who I am not for what I am in this team,” said Papa. She also added that the sport is teaching her to embrace her femininity even more.

On the challenges The path towards did not go easy given the pressure of proving their skills through victories. Papa joined the cluster meet this year where all of them got in, and then the city meet where only three(3) players over nine(9) where left to join the next level. The all-male regional qualifier, Johnson Aleria, Patrick Alingato, and Brian Teves are now preparing for the NCR Meet in Pasig on February 12-17. Unlike the previous years, no female has advanced to the regionals. Mrs. Marlie B. Maximo, the MAPEH Coordinator mentioned about the plans to provide more intensive training next year especially for the girls as they need motivation to perform better for the next cluster meet. Papa encourages future arnisadors to try out next year as the sport has its own benefits from free travels and scholarships to socialization and holistic improvement. [S]

training, the four boxers will try to punch their tickets to the Palarong Pambansa in Ilocos Sur.

“Mag-aaim nalang tayo bakit pa natin ililimit. S’yempre nandito tayo to compete kaya itodo na natin. Last year wala tayong Palaro delegate pero we expect that dadagsa ang Signalians ngayon.” said SVNHS boxing coach Brecilda Dela Rosa. [S]

Intramurals: To prioritize or not

A

student can learn through academics but students can also learn through extracurricular activities such as intramurals. With all the worries and stress caused by the student’s academics it is fitting to give back to the students the extra credit for working hard on their studies and give them a breath of fresh air from the tension that they have to go through every single day inside the classroom and that is to prioritize intramurals.

A comprehensive study and analysis of existing research by the National Institutes of Health found that leisure-time physical activity is associated with reduced risk of 13 different types of cancer. Physical activity also helps build and maintain healthy

bones, muscles, and joints, which will help control weight, reduce fat and prevent the development of high blood pressure. Something that intramurals can provide for the welfare of the students. Intramurals benefit both social and physical aspect of a

student. Intramurals make way for the student’s social life engaging with different people and creating a wider chance to have more friends and increase the probability of the student’s willingness to participate in different sports. This social aspect can positively affect the crucial aspect in the

development of self-esteem, goal setting and leadership in students. They will learn teamwork and communication skills and likely to get a boost in self-confidence. Their overall self- image may positively change.

School involvement in

intramurals will not only make the student overall healthy, but will also allow them to have an overall enjoyable time. Meeting new faces, making new friends that will last a life time and surely create a long lasting memories that every student will never forget in his/her lifetime. [S]
