HOW TO BECOME A MORNING PERSON Not everyone enjoys early starts, but there are some steps you can follow to help you become a morning person. Daily routines help us to stay focused, maintain productivity, and feel fulfilled by activating the reward system in our brains when we complete tasks. Routines bring a level of certainty and security amidst a time when uncertainty can often feel overwhelming. It's natural to feel a lack of motivation with a change in daily structure, and we may find ourselves sleeping in more than we used to. However, during these moments of uncertainty, maintaining a routine is key, waking up early allows us the time to prepare ourselves for the day ahead. But does the thought of an early start send fear through your veins? And routine seems impossible? We are going to share our share tips to help find motivation and turn yourself into a morning person!

Practice Some Meditation Meditating for five to 10 minutes upon waking. Sit quietly as soon as you get up and focus on your breath; deep breath in and deep breath out, allowing yourself to become calm and present. As thoughts come into your mind don’t get caught up in them or dwell on them, simply acknowledge them and let them go, returning your mind back to your breath. eel the calm, the peace, the presence. This one pause will make the biggest shift to your day and all that follows.

Protect Your Sleep A good night’s sleep can make you feel like a new person. And that’s not surprising when you consider just how many health benefits sleeping well can have. Sleep supports the proteins and cells of your immune system to detect and destroy bugs and germs. Sleep also helps to reduce stress, support mental wellbeing and improve heart health. Some of our favorite natural remedies to support sleep include ashwagandha, valerian and oats – which naturally contain tryptophan, helping to regulate our bodies circadian rhythms. HOW TO BE HAPPY BY PRACTICING GRATITUDE

CREATE A GRATITUDE JOURNAL

BE KIND TO EVERYONE, INCLUDING YOURSELF

Make it your daily goal to write down three things for which you are grateful. Moreover, when you start your day focusing on all the good things around you, the world will look like a more positive place. Some people like to write in a pretty decorated notebook. In my experience any spiral notebook will be fine. Even any blank paper where you can write on will provide a feeling of gratefulness and will focus your mind on what is good right now in your life. Don’t worry about repeating over and over the same phrase such as: I’m grateful for my food. I’m grateful for my family. I’m grateful for my health. Once you get into the routine, you’ll be able to add more details and find more and more things to be grateful for.

If you want to learn how to practice gratitude, studies suggest you should start by being kind to yourself. Look at your reflection in the mirror and say out loud three things you love about yourself. Also, write down positive thoughts and strategically place them where you can see them as soon as you wake up. In addition, when you feel frustrated or disappointed, think what you did well in that situation. Instead of blaming yourself, be kind and think about it as a learning experience. Tell your loved ones you appreciate them. Tell your friends they did something you cherish. Any small gesture of appreciation will allow you to share your love and appreciation.

3 CONCENTRATE ON THE POSITIVE It is simple to indulge in negative thoughts when negative events happens. Instead of doing this, you can nurture positive thoughts. Think about the power of all the good things in your life. And always remember that unfavorable events don’t last forever .Now that you know how to be happy practicing gratitude, include at least one of these 10 strategies in your day and you will immediately feel happier. What is your favorite way to include more gratitude into your life? You can share gratitude by giving a simple and powerful note to someone who’s had a hard day. Moreover, express your compassion and offer your support. Remind everyone around you what you appreciate about them. This is especially important when those around you are not having a good day or are not in a good mood.

1. Give Someone A Compliment

4. Hold The Door Open For Someone

A compliment is one of the easiest ways to make someone feel good, especially if they’re having a bad day. It could be anything from “you look nice today” to “you’re a great friend and I’m lucky to have you”.

It doesn’t take much, but holding the door open for

6. Smile At Everyone, Just Because

It could be as simple as asking a busy colleague if there’s anything you can help them with, or offering to pick the grandkids up from school, but you’ll be making someone’s day that little bit easier.

It’s often said that smiling is infectious, so what better way to lift people’s mood than to give them a beaming, silly grin?

CELESTE SOL JEWELRY I have had the pleasure of meeting Tiffany last year through social media and I’m happy to say that I have made a great friend. Her passion for her business is infectious and I am so happy to be a part of the journey. Here is a little bit of background on Celeste Sol. Over 60 years ago in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico Tiffany’s grandparents were running Trifilio Imports — a fine jewelry boutique offering timeless pieces from around the world. Now reinvented for the modern woman and taking on a new identity— CELESTE SOL offers delicate gold plated pieces for any look; inspired by the same influences of fashion, travel, and culture of Tiffany’s beloved grandparents. If you want to learn more keep reading because in this interview I got to ask Tiffany a couple of questions and learn more about her day to day in running a business and personal life.

Q: Can you tell us about your early career and how you got yourself established in your industry? I started as an Assistant Buyer at Neiman Marcus right out of college. I went in thinking it would be my "dream job", but I ended up spending 3 years in the position and was disappointed in the opportunities for growth. I had a strong desire to be and build something bigger than what I felt the company and Texas could offer me, so I quit and sold every possession I owned and moved to NYC with one suitcase and my dog. With some hustle and luck, I was offered a jobs at two major retailers within two weeks of landing (I took the job as a Brand Analyst at Macy's), and began my life in NYC. Q: How does a day in your life look like these days?

Different everyday! I launched both of my businesses while working

Q: What’s the most enjoyable or fulfilling part of what you do ? The community of supporters, customers and influencers we have built, I believe to be the best. We wanted to create a bridge between fashion and culture and build a community of Black and Latina women who are motivated and empowered to do good and make positive change in the communities they or their families are from. A % of all sales goes to supporting women and children in/of Latin American and Caribbean countries and we are so proud of the support and contributions we have been able to make to our charitable partners.

Q: Who are some of your biggest inspirations? My mama- she raised me as a single mother and taught me about hustle and strength. My husband- he pushes me outside of my comfort zone and encourages me to invest in myself and build that thing I believed to be much bigger than me. I am also immensely inspired by women- they suffer the greatest hurdles and heartbreaks, but also the greatest joys (shoutout to the mamas!) and I am always in awe of our resiliency and strength.

Q: What your biggest challenge when starting a business? Time and money. Most people start their businesses as a side hustleI was 7 months pregnant working 12 hours a day as a Buyer- so finding time to commit to the initial research and finding resources was a challenge to say the least. Starting a business for the first time, you don't know much, so I made some bad investments in the process- always tough, but necessary lessons to learn.

Q: What do you see as some of your biggest accomplishments? My son is by far the most precious and perfect thing I have ever been apart of- I'm in constant awe that he is mine. Celeste Sol's contributions to charities that support and empower women- most specifically affecting women in/of Latin American and Caribbean countries- make me the most proud (last year we donated almost 8% of annual sales!).

Q: What would you tell someone who is interested in starting a business or pursuing a passion? Just start! Don't get caught up in the minutia- you are going to change fonts, color, etc. a million times once you launch. The postCOVID world we are living has a lot of resources for small businesses, from online education to capital, to take advantage of. JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 12

Q: Can you tell us about your early career and how you got yourself established in your industry?

I started out as a Marketing professional in the Corporate world. I worked for amazing companies like Citibank Latin America and agencies like OM Marketing. Although I enjoyed my work, I felt that I was not fully aligned with my purpose and I had more to give. After a long search, I came across the field of Coaching and fell in love with the idea of helping others achieve their dreams. So, in 2015, I got my first certification as a Passion Test Facilitator and began to host workshops and work with Private clients. I established myself as an expert over time thanks to my consistent delivery of value on social platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The two activities that helped me the most were live video trainings and sharing written posts that helped my audience feel more motivated to commit to living their passion. Those actions really boosted my visibility and positioned me as an expert. As I advanced in my Coaching career, I also started to book more speaking engagements with conferences and organizations that leveraged my impact even more.

Q: How does a day in your life look like these days?

My daily life can be described in 3 words: Intentional, Simple and Passionate. I am very

Q: What’s the most enjoyable or fulfilling part of what you do ?

The most enjoyable part of what I do is hearing that my clients are seeing progress, feeling more confident and breaking through mental limitations. Being a leader and guide for them is so humbling, I truly love seeing their lives get better and better as a result of our work. Q: Who are some of your biggest inspirations?

The most amazing leader who revolutionized the world and my savior, Jesus Christ. I would not be where I am if it wasn't for his example, his love, and his legacy. I also feel extremely inspired by Tony Robbins, Mother Teresa and Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. Q: What your biggest challenge when starting a business?

My biggest challenge was believing fully in my abilities and taking command of my mindset in order to scale up my impact and my income. Q: What do you see as some of your biggest accomplishments?

Making a living doing what I love. Designing my ideal life from scratch and achieving most of what I envisioned within 5 years. The ripple effect of my work in the women I work with and their families. Q: What would you tell someone who is interested in starting a business or pursuing a passion?

I would say START NOW, and be okay with investing in yourself. Invest in a good mentor/guide/coach to help you rewire your mental blocks, give you a guide to follow and help you develop the skills you need to reach your dreams. Don't

Do You Laugh Daily? The 7th Health Benefits of Laughter Therapy How many times a day do you laugh? One, two, maybe three? Maybe, none? With so much happening today in society we forget sometimes to laugh. We forget that we need to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In today’s culture, people are more stressed, less relaxed, and often lacking in work, life, and family balance. Life is meant to be enjoyed with passion, zest, enthusiasm and in the camaraderie of like-minded individuals. So, what is laughter therapy? Laughter therapy, is the use of humor to promote overall health and wellness. It is simple.

Our goal should be to use the natural process of laughter while applying teaching methods that are uplifting, simple, effective, and powerful. So what are some examples? Turning negativity to positivity, self-pity to gratitude, and selfishness to kindness. Did you know that laughter has many health benefits? Here are the 7 health benefits of laughter therapy: Lowers blood pressure - People who lower their blood pressure, even those who start at normal levels, will reduce their risk of stroke and heart attack. JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 16

Reduces stress hormone levels - By reducing stress, we cut the stress and anxiety that impacts our body. Improves cardiac health - Laughing can improve both circulatory and cardiovascular health. Triggers the release of endorphinsWhen you exercise and/or laugh, your body releases these chemicals called endorphins. These endorphinsinteract with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. Produces a general sense of wellbeing Laughter can increase your overall sense of well-being. Doctors have found that people who have a positive outlook on life tend to fight diseases better than people who tend to be more negative.

Stimulates the mind - Laughter also brings about an emotional high, which can enable problems to be seen from a different perspective especially those of a stressful nature. Improves memory and mood - Studies have shown that laughing helps one be more productive at work. Laughter stimulates both sides of the brain to enhance learning, It eases muscle tension and psychological stress which keeps the brain alert and allows people to retain more information. As we remember the benefits to laughing, making laughter a part of your work life and personal life is important. Next time you are upset, remember to laugh. Life is too short. We are here today and tomorrow is never promised. So smile, laugh, and live longer!

Reward yourself for a job well done and switch off when the day is done. It’s often tempting to carry on working into the evenings when we work from home and many regular remote workers report that they find it hard to call it day. There’s a clear boundary between the physical space of the office and our homes, and we need to recreate that psychologically speaking when we are at home. Set mindset boundaries and hold yourself accountable to them. If you are able to shut the door on your work in your home office, then do so. If not, pack up the laptop and move it off the kitchen table. For many of us, the commute between work and home represents an opportunity to unwind and decompress from the busy-ness and the business of the day. You may want to develop some muscle memory around this when you are working at home. Something which signals, ‘that’s it, I’ve clocked off’. Maybe have a shower, put the PJS on, play a particular song. Whatever it is, if you do it most days, you will quickly come to associate this new logging off ritual with the end of the day and with a virtual – and well earned - pat on the back.

90 minutes puts us in tune with our natural ‘ultradian rhythm’. Tests carried out at Florida’s State University, by Professor K Anders Ericsson, show that working in these short, concerted bursts and taking time out in between sessions has a significant impact on our overall rates of productivity. Our brains like breaks. We grow from changing up what we are doing and giving ourselves time out. Go for a walk, make a hot drink, focus on a domestic task, meditate, read a newspaper, grab a snack. Whatever it is that constitutes a break away from your desk is as valuable as the time you spend at it. (And your back will thank you too!)

Was it deliberate or did it fall in your lap? Funny.. I never chose it. I was young and married out of high school in 1991. We went to Europe and I worked for USAA in Germany. A woman came in and offered me a job inspecting vehciles geing shipped to the US for Military purposes. It was interesting and challenging… there were so many regulations for the inspection process. I worked there about four years and we returned to the US. We had children, and I had several jobs and went to college while pregnant, with great support from my husband. I ended up working for Progressive for about six years as a senior multi-line adjuster and loved it. Then on to Travelers and here I am at Palm Beach County Schools. WORKPLACE SAFETY DURING CIVIL UNREST Businesses need to have a policy on what to do if the worst case happens and rioters besiege their business.

BY KIMBERLY GEORGE AND MARK WALLS

One of our Out Front Ideas Issues to Watch the last two years has been workplace violence. Our focus has been on the common threats of violence that many workers and businesses are facing.

With the recent civil unrest in several cities, workplaces face potential new dangers from the riots and looting that have unfortunately accompanied some of the peaceful protests. There are several issues that employers need to consider for protecting their employees during these situations.

JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 29

MONITORING One of the initial and ongoing protocols should include monitoring the news, social media, and reports from local government officials on the potential for protests near business locations and surrounding areas. Front-line employees should also be reporting back to the corporate office on these issues so that important decisions related to workplace safety, opening or not, and staffing can be made timely. Although most protests are peaceful, recent civil disobedience across many U.S. cities is leading organizations to revisit crisis planning scenarios and monitoring diligence.

COMMUNICATION Maintaining communication with your workforce during a potential crisis should be a top priority — not just with your managers, but the entire workforce. How are you approaching this? Do you have an emergency alert system or another way of contacting all employees at a particular location? Communication needs to be consistent, clear and transparent. Do not leave things up to employee interpretation. Tell them what action they need to take and when and what to expect from your leadership. These situations can change quickly, so it is vital to have a consistent communication plan.

TRAVEL TO WORK Massive protests can make traveling to and from work difficult with street and highway closures, and public transportation being overwhelmed or closed. Employers need to be mindful of how this impacts the ability of their workforce to get to work. Is parking safe and available? Is the area safe to walk from train or bus stops to the job location? Consider adjusting shift times so that your employees are not trying to come and go during the protest and offer work from home in scenarios where that is an option.

CURFEWS Several cities have imposed curfews during times of civil unrest. When this happens, companies should make sure facilities are closing early enough to provide time for your workers to get home before the start of the curfew. For essential businesses that may be exempt from the curfew, make sure your employees have the appropriate documentation with them at all times in case they are stopped by law enforcement.

CLOSING Sometimes the safest option for your employees is to close the business early to avoid it being open during the protests or times of civil disobedience. For the benefit of all, it is essential to make closing decisions as soon as possible so that employees can both avoid coming into work, and get out of a potentially dangerous situation quickly.

WORKFORCE WELLBEING It’s natural for your employees to be apprehensive during these situations, and fear is a common thread. Reminding employees of the benefits and resources available to assist them will be helpful. Offering an employee assistance program can be of particular interest during stressful times, and they may connect the caller with behavioral health counselors. Tele-behavioral health is increasingly available through group health telemedicine programs and is especially helpful for just-in-time care related to civil unrest. Remind employees of resilience, emotional health and financial resources that are available as part of the employer’s benefits program or the community.

PREPARE FOR THE WORST Companies need to have a policy on what to do if the worst case happens and rioters besiege their business. What should your employees do to protect their safety? How should they respond if looters are on the premise? These policies need to be developed well in advance, and employees trained on the proper course of action. A crisis is no time for hesitancy.

NUTS AND BOLTS OF FIELD CASE MANAGEMENT BY MOLLIE KALLEN I have been in the workers’ compensation

In my career as a case manager I have seen many

other case managers in my travels and one can’t

years and while there are always a great

help but notice different case management

deal of changes in our industry, there are

styles. Some of us come from a nursing background

some basics that always stay the same. It is and others come from a more vocational always a good time to really examine the basics about what really makes a

background. I really think that your educational and

successful field case manager. I call this the

practical framework truly shapes your case

“Nuts and Bolts” of case management – or

management style. Here are some of my top five

Case Management 101.

pointers for effective case management:

JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 32

BASIC CONCEPT #1 – SHOWING UP Sounds simple, but many times I see case managers that don’t even bother to attend their appointments with the injured worker. There is indeed a place for telephonic case management, but if this file was assigned to you for FIELD then there is good reason. You cannot fully understand your client, physician and treatment plan (especially if there are complicated issues, prior injuries, non compliance, etc.) without being there. The amount of information that you glean from an expression , and how someone walks in and out of the appointment, all of these things must be seen in person. This is the reason why you were assigned this case…don’t underestimate the importance of viewing everything and everyone with your own two eyes.

BASIC CONCEPT #2 – DO YOUR HOMEWORK It is crucial to review a file (as much as you have been given) prior to your initial appointment with the injured worker AND to review the file each time before you go to a follow up appointment. We all are so busy that sometimes something slides and this often is it. Knowing a client’s medical/educational/vocational history is crucial as many times a client forgets surgeries, diagnostics, physicians, etc. on the initial intake form and when they speak with the doctor and it is our job to fill in those gaps. Important information is often left out (intentionally or unintentionally) and this impacts the progress and outcome of the case. For more complicated cases, I often do a timeline and this also assists the physician and the adjuster/employer as well. Also, the more you do your homework, the more prepared you are if a deposition comes your way! JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 33

BASIC CONCEPT #3 - DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT Every email, every phone call, every letter and

BASIC CONCEPT #4 – COMMUNICATION/ SCANNING APPLICATIONS This is a key concept. If something occurs in the case then documenting it is just the first step and the NEXT and

every meeting is documented. I utilize a dictating

substitutes for a personal conversation.

BASIC CONCEPT #5 – KNOW WHEN TO CLOSE A FILE This is something that is never really taught to case managers but is a very important concept especially for those of us who are independents and whose inventory is referral based and not contractual. There are times when field case management is needed on a file and there are times when your role is minimal (injured worker is almost at MMI and compliant) and if the entire team is working seamlessly and communicating effectively, then it is your role as a case manager to know when to recommend file closure. So many referrals now are “task assignments” – referring to field case management to accomplish a specific task then close (i.e. clarify major contributing cause, obtain MMI

meet with injured workers, therapists and other providers. Be careful of the platform you are using (make sure you are using a HIPAA compliant platform) as well as one that has all the security built in that is so important in the medical field. It is another tool to use in our toolbox and I do not recommend using it on the first call with an injured worker as it is important to build trust and rapport first. Even when we return to doctors’ offices and clinics, it is so important for case managers to maintain CDC protocol at all times. There is no replacement for live, field case management and there never will be. In person human connection will always be the preferable way in our industry.

So there they are – my top five case management recommendations. I welcome any feedback and/or hearing what your current issues are and am so proud to be a part of this wonderful profession that keeps evolving in a positive direction year by year. Case management is a crucial and important link in workers compensation and in all areas (geriatric care management, hospital case management, etc.) and do not lose sight of your key role in assisting the lives of so many others. CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

EXPLAINED. WRITTEN BY DR. ERIC BALAGUER HAND AND UPPER EXTREMITY SURGERY MIAMI INSTITUTE FOR JOINT RECONSTRUCTION

There is evidence that excessive repetitive movements of the arms, wrists, or hands can aggravate the structures of the carpal tunnel, triggering the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Also, several conditions as pregnancy, hypothyroidism, Wrist fracture (Colles), Hand/Wrist trauma, Space-occupying lesions within the carpal tunnel (eg, flexor tenosynovitis, ganglions, hemorrhage, aneurysms, anomalous muscles, various tumors, edema), Diabetes, Rheumatoid arthritis, Renal dialysis, and Menopause among others

What Are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The carpal tunnel is located in the wrist. The median nerve and the tendons that connect the fingers to the muscles of the forearm pass through the tunnel. The median nerve provides sensation to the palm side of the thumb, index, middle fingers, as well as

The first symptoms usually are tingling and numbness, many times waking the patients up at night with numbness and sometimes pain in the hand. Up to 40% of patients suffering from this condition also experience symptoms in the forearm and even up to the shoulder. As carpal tunnel syndrome becomes more severe, symptoms are noticed during the day.In advanced cases when the motor branch of the median nerve is affected there is loss of strength and coordination at the base of the thumb and there may be permanent numbness of the fingers supplied by the median nerve. (Thumb, Index, Long and half of the Ring fingers)

the inside half of the ring finger and muscle power to the thumb. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed due to swelling of the nerve or tendons or both. It is unclear what causes this problem, but evidence suggest the size of the carpal canal is one of the important components causing compression of the nerve. When this occurs, numbness, tingling, and sometimes pain of the affected fingers. In advanced cases atrophy of the thumb muscles occurs resulting in weakness and dropping of objects, difficulties opening jars, etc JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 36

How to Diagnose Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Compression tests are very reliable reproducing the symptoms experienced by the patients who suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. They all apply pressure on the median nerve via direct compression over the nerve. When there is significant deficit of the median nerve, the thumb muscles become atrophied and weak which is evident in the clinical exam. Once there is clinical evidence, most patients undergo an electromyogram and nerve conduction studies to confirm the diagnosis and the extent of nerve damage. These tests, however, may not become positive until there is significant nerve damage. There is documented evidence that up to 30% of patients with clinical evidence of carpal tunnel syndrome will have a negative electromyogram study.

What Is the Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? There are two ways to perform Carpal Tunnel Surgery: Open and Endoscopic

What Is the Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? There are several ways to treat symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome: Immobilization. Immobilizing the wrist in a splint that support the wrist in a comfortable neutral position. This position will provide the least amount of compression of the nerve relieving painful numbness or tingling. The current recommendations are to wear the splints only at night since the results are similar as wearing them through the entire day and night. Medication . Patients may be given short courses of anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and Vitamins B1 and B6 which have been shown to provide some improved in the healing of the damaged nerves. Steroid injections are typically not recommended and only indicated as temporizing measures for people with symptoms that are not controlled with conservative management and require surgery but for certain circumstances cannot undergo surgery at that time. Cortisone injections have demonstrated poor long-term effects and potential significant side effects such as Median neuritis.

The Open technique is a safe and effective surgical technique. An incision is made over the carpal ligament in the palm of the hand. Dissection is carried out until reaching the carpal ligament and with much care, the carpal ligament is incised. The patient is instructed in range-of-motion exercises for the fingers, wrist, and arm; and a splint in a wrist neutral position is used at night for 3 weeks for patient comfort. The sutures are removed 12 to 14 days postoperatively. At 1 month after surgery patients can return to work with a 2-lb weight restriction, and at 6 to 8 weeks after surgery they are allowed full activity without restrictions

Endoscopic techniques decrease the length of the incision decreasing postoperative pain and providing a faster recovery. A small incision is made in the wrist and the endoscope is introduced under the carpal ligament. Once the ligament is fully visualized, a blade is raised, and the ligament is incised. Once the ligament is released, the wound is closed. The patients can use the hands immediately after the surgery, no splint is needed. Usually the patient can return to work 3 days later and have unrestricted use of the hand in most cases in 4 to 6 weeks. Most patients do not require occupational therapy JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 37

DOCTOR TO KNOW He went on to receive his undergraduate degree in biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, in Berkeley, California, Dr. Popp earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Following medical school, he completed his internship and residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Popp then went on to complete further specialty training in spine surgery through the University of Southern California Spine Center Fellowship at Keck School of Medicine of USC in Los Angeles, California. He joined Vero Orthopaedics and Neurology back in 2017 and began practicing in the state of Florida. Where he enjoys swimming, working out, and racing his sailboat. He specifically loves racing his sailboat because it's an individual sport that makes you rely on yourself. However, in his practice he likes to treat his patients with a team approach. Since spine patients tend to have issues for longer periods of time he stated that he gets to really know his patients and see their progression.

DR. CRAIG POPP Board Certified, Fellowship-Trained Orthopedic Surgeon Sports Medicine Specialist

Many know Dr. Craig Popp as just an orthopedic surgeon, however, we got a chance to speak to him one on one and learn more about his journey in becoming a doctor.

When it comes to workers compensation, his philosophy is to treat claimants like athletes and get them back to work as soon as possible. Even if it’s to a certain degree because if you stop going to work it's harder to ever get back. If you want to learn more about Dr. Popp check out Vero Orthopaedic & Neurology's website at veroortho.com.

Dr. Popp grew up in Southern California. Popp swam competitively and participated in water polo. Coming from an athletic background he utilizes that skill in treating all of his patients like pro athletes. So what got Dr. Popp into wanting to become an Orthopaedic surgeon? He stated that since being an athlete whenever he got injured he saw the doctors treating him and others. And it was there where he saw that he could see himself becoming a doctor.

DOCTOR TO KNOW DR. AMAR D. RAJADHYAKSHA

Board Certified, Fellowship-Trained Orthopedic Surgeon in Spine Surgery and Revisions

We had the opportunity to speak to the very well known Dr. Amar D. Rajadhyaksha. And were able to get a peek into his life and learn more about his journey into medicine. However, his story begins back in 1971 when his parents came to America from India. Prior to moving to the states his parents met in medical school in India and went through many battles to be together because they both were a part of different cultures and arranged marriages were still a thing. Against all odds they decided to get married, his mother’s father didn’t even attend the wedding.

To begin a new life after their schooling his parents took their first flight ever from Bombay to Boston. They only had five dollars in their pocket and landed with only three dollars. Why is that? Well back then if you wanted to watch a movie on the plane you needed to pay for the headset and it was one dollar a piece and they decided well if they only have five dollars what’s going to be the difference if we only have three. The experience of the flight was more important to them. Once they arrived in Boston they completed their residences and training while living in a friend’s basement at the time. It was there where they had Dr. Amar and his brother and started their family. His parents' journey inspired him to pursue his education and work hard for his goals. Since he was little he grew up around physicians so he always saw himself as a doctor, however, there was one thing he loved just as much and that is— baseball. He saw himself becoming a professional baseball player but later realized that it wasn’t the path for him but knew he wanted to get into sports medicine. One time at a Red Sox baseball game he saw the team's sports doctor and realized that he also worked at the same hospital as his mother. He got to watch the team doctor do his work and knew he would love to do that. As time went on Dr. Amar evolved from sports medicine into becoming an orthopaedic surgeon to then specializing in the spine. He studied medicine at the New York Medical College, completed his fellowship at NYU hospital, conducted research at John Hopkins Medical Institutions, and completed additional training at Cornell University. He is now board certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 44

Fast forward to today, Dr. Amar has two beautiful kids and a wife. He enjoys spending time with his family and learning more about his kids everyday and how they can grow up in the same environment and be completely different and grow in their own way. Since the global pandemic has put everyone in quarantine Dr. Amar stated that it has been great for his family to connect and spend more time with each other since he spends so much time away working. At his practice Miami Institute for Joint Reconstruction, they have implemented telemedicine services for their patients to be safe and still get their care. Along with limiting the amount of people they see per day to limit the amount of people in the waiting room. In regards to workers compensation, he believes in getting the injured worker back to work as soon as safely possible. He tries to manage his work comp patients the same way he would his private patients, however, work comp patients tend to believe that someone is responsible for their injury. Which is understandable to him but the key thing is to find out what the actual injury is because for the spine he can find multiple tears. So the key thing for him when it comes to workers comp patients is finding the missing puzzle piece and identifying the contributing cause. As time has gone by Dr. Amar has implemented the hard working values he learned from his parents and become the doctor he always wanted to be. His story is one of the most inspiring stories we have gotten to capture and I hope whoever is reading this takes away some valuable information and to remember to never give up on your goals.

THE STRUGGLES, FACES, & IDEA BEHIND OM MARKETING Written and Interviewed by Anailis Diaz Meet Mari and Ozzy Diaz, now known as two of the hardest working individuals within the Workers’ Compensation industry. The couple has been together for over 30 years. It all began back in the summer of 1989, when Mari was attending a summer school class. Her and her now husband, Ozzy met during a course when entering the 7th grade. It was young love at just 13 years old. Throughout their middle school and high school years, the couple remained together. Later, Mari & Ozzy had their first child Ozzy Jr. at just 19 years old.

Fast forwarding a few years later, Mari began working at a medical center within the Workers’ Compensation Industry. After begin there for some time, Mari was having a lot of personal & health issues within her life. She was out of the office after being hospitalized and upon her return was let go.

As any young parent, they worked hard to provide for their son. “We worked hard to start a life. We had very little and our parents did not have much. It was just us,” says Mari. A year later, the couple was blessed with Samantha, one of their two daughters. Ozzy Sr. was working to help provide for the family. He recalls being at the hospital during Samantha’s birth and having to leave right after she born. “My boss called me and I told him my daughter was just born. He told me he didn't care and if I didn’t go in to work I wouldn’t have a job. I had to leave. I had to keep my job so we could provide for the kids,” says Diaz. As he continued to work, Mari stayed home to take care of Ozzy Jr. and Samantha. About two years later, Mari had Melissa, their second daughter. “When I had Melissa, I wanted to go and find a job. I was ready to work. Melissa was the only one to go to day-care. I had to help provide for my family.”

She was back to the drawing board and had to job hunt to provide for her three small children. “After I was fired, I was devasted. I had to find something. I actually did the whole unemployment thing while I searched. Two weeks later, I received a call from Mark Connors,” says Mari. Connors saw her resume and was interested in hiring her for a sales position for a pharmaceutical company. Mari says, “Sales manager position? like what the heck, I've never done this but he was interested in me because I had billing experience from working at the medical center.” Long story short, Connors took a chance on Mari and gave her the opportunity and she ran with it. Mari says, “I had no experience whatsoever but I was like yeah, I can do it, yeah I can do it.” If you know Mari, you know she is determined and will never stop until she succeeds. A few weeks into learning the business, Mari says the company only sold their pharmaceutical products to the military. After learning the business, Mari sat with Pat Cropper, the director, and asked him if they had ever thought about working within the Workers’ Compensation Industry. “He's like ‘No but you know what, you can do it! Why don't you start the program?,” said Cropper. “Are you sure you want me to start the program for you?,” said Mari. Cropper and Connors believed in Mari. They gave her the keys to the company car, the credit card, and told her to go visit all the medical centers and start. She did just that. She began the program and in six months, she has almost every single urgent care. She started meeting doctors as the pharmaceutical rep. One day, a doctor approached her and asked if she could do his marketing for him. Her response, “I sure can and I will.” Nothing stopped her. Later that day, Mari went home and told Ozzy, “we are starting our own company.” Ozzy says, “I asked her, ‘what are you talking about?’ Are you serious? Okay, Lets do it! I was on board and we immediately started a marketing, recruiting, and sales company. "

Mari was as serious and determined as she was 6 months before. They were ready to start something they could call their own A few years later, Mari and Ozzy expanded and started representing doctors all over the South Florida area. The company obtained a leading position in the industry by connecting professionals within the Worker’s Compensation industry, through its innovative practice marketing, event planning, and continuing education services. The couple dedicated themselves in doing everything they could for their doctors. Mari says, “Ozzy & I treat these practices as if they were our business. I don't look at it like it’s just a practice, I look at this like it’s my own and I am building it up for my client. I don't see it like this is an account. I really care about my doctors and their practices.” The couple are working to pass along their company to their son, Ozzy Jr. in hopes of one day retiring and enjoying the benefits of all their hard work. She says, “I’ve always worked hard for my family. To be successful means to have freedom. My husband and I have worked for that. I have learned to take life slow and I have begun to balance life and business. Anyone that sets their mind to it can do it too.”

During a drug bust, Blair was injured during the execution of an arrest and was actually on Workers’ Compensation himself. He suffered multiple injuries and was hospitalized for over 6 months. The color comes out so perfectly and I must admit it's alittle drying but that’s a typical matte lipstick but overall, I LOVE IT! SO, TAKE CHARGE AND CONQUER THE WORLD WITH THE RIGHT LIPSTICK.

But let's get to it! Lipstick lovers know how hard it is to find long lasting lip wear that won’t feather, cake, or fade. Recently, I heard of this brand called 'Nasty Woman Cosmetics' which is a cruelty-free, vegan makeup brand that supports fighting for equality and social justice with the power of lipstick or gloss. So, why not try out the lipsticks that makes a difference? I ordered three different red lipsticks (because of course you need a different shade for each day right?) I brought

11 DAILY HABITS TO IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH The importance of mental health has definitely been a subject more talked about over the last year or so.

Many of us find it difficult to switch off from work, our digital devices or even the television, often feeling guilty for taking this time out. But our mental health is as important as our physical health, so we should pay as much attention to it as we would physical ailments.

Here are 6 daily habits from Just Begin Magazine that you can take up to help improve your mental health. JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 54

1. Use a Diary to Track Your Day At the end of every day write down 3 things you were grateful for and 3 things you accomplished. If keeping a diary isn’t your style, then there are plenty of apps available to use for this.

2. Plan Ahead Get your outfit or lunch ready for work the night before. This will give you a sense of control ahead of time and will leave you with one less thing to think about in the morning.

3. Meditate Meditation can be hard to master, but once you’ve got the hang of it, it can be great for the brain and stress relief. It is suggested that meditating for 10 – 12 minutes a day can be beneficial for those suffering from depression.

4. Set Your Goals Write down a set of goals you’d like to achieve, whether short or long-term, and work towards them. Making small goals such as trying out a new recipe or trying an exercise class can help you to feel more positive about yourself.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Say ‘No’ We can’t be everything to everyone, so don’t try to be. Being available 24/7 can be stressful and detrimental to your health. Learn how to say ‘no’, whether to your boss or friends, and take some time out for yourself.

6. Catch Up We all need social interaction and talking to friends or loved ones, either in person or over the phone, can give us a boost in mood and confidence. It can also help to challenge feelings of loneliness.

JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 55

7. Disconnect & Take a Break Most of us are constantly connected to our devices, meaning we’re able to read work emails at any point. Try to spend some time without your phone so you’re able to connect more fully with your surroundings and spend time talking to people face-to-face. When situations become overwhelming it can be best to just take a break from it. Take a few minutes to perform a breathing exercise, or to get away from your desk if you’re at work. Basically, stop doing the thing, even momentarily, that is making you stressed.

8. Talk About It Talking about your feelings with someone you trust can help your mental wellbeing and allow you to get what’s bothering you off your chest. Talking about how you’re feeling can be the first step to taking control of a situation.

9. Head Outside & Get Some Exercise Weather permitting, try to spend some time outside every day. Sunlight helps promote the production of vitamin D which increases your level of serotonin (which helps regulate your mood) in the brain. Plus, time in nature is a proven stress reducer. Physical activity can have a positive impact on our mood. Even as little as a brisk 10-minute walk can increase our positive mood.

10. Embrace a New Hobby Whether it’s a physical activity, crafts or volunteering, a hobby can provide an alternative outlet. It can also be a good way to meet like-minded individuals outside your existing support group.

11. Get a Good Night’s Sleep While it can be tempting to stay up binge-watching the latest box set, getting to bed at a reasonable time can increase the chances of deep, REM sleep, which happens at the end of a sleep cycle.

A love letter to

Rosemary Humble common Rosemary is probably found in every kitchen in the western world and because it’s regarded as a common spice used in culinary applications it is easy to overlook it as an important medicine. And an important medicine it is indeed. “Rosemary is for remembrance" is a classic phrase from Shakespeare and it truly is. So I like to think of Rosemary being used as a specific remedy for psychological weakness and low cognitive function, specifically when there is poor memory. To me, the essence of Rosemary is that she (I feel like it's a female spirit) helps us to remember who we are, to be strong in who we are, and to have the strength and courage to embody and become that in our daily lives. This means that we embrace everything about ourselves, our pasts, our presents, our families, where we come from, our ancestry. Through embracing the wholeness of who we are, we learn how to live in accordance with the truth that dwells within each of our hearts. With all of this combined with Rosemary’s actions and affinities for the mind and clarity, I find it to be one of those remedies that assists with the alignment of the heart and mind.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO AYURVEDA Ayurveda is one of those words that, when spoken, gets quickly categorized in the slightly-hippy-health-things-that-I-do-not-understand part of my brain. It’s filed somewhere between kabbalah and transcendental meditation.

WHAT IS AYURVEDA? Ayurveda is a system of medicine created thousands of years ago in India. It says that our body and mind are made up of certain elements and that by balancing these elements through food and lifestyle we’ll be able to live our happiest, most fulfilled life. Now I get it: when you hear the whole “body-mind” speech it’s easy to think you’re in the realm of the mystical and switch right off. But the link between body and mind isn’t hocus pocus. We experience it every day.

In both examples, the mere act of thinking will produce a physical reaction. Ayurveda is all about balancing out that relationship between the mind and the body so that we experience a lot more of the good stuff. Sounds alright, right?

LET'S GET PACKING!

READY FOR YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE? LETS GO!

Before You Start: Make a Packing List Nothing makes me feel like an organized human as much as dividing my belongings into color-coded cubes. It's so wonderful to know exactly where everything you brought is as soon as you unzip your suitcase. Plus, you can very easily move your packing cubes into the drawers of your hotel dresser or Airbnb and instantly be done unpacking and ready to go.

Roll, Don't Fold The best way to prevent creases and make the most of your space is to use the roll method. Lay tops facedown, fold in the sleeves and roll from the bottom up. For pants, put the legs together and roll from the waist down. Once you’ve rolled everything, place pants and tops in your suitcase before shoes and accessories; then, fit in other oddly shaped items like hair tools.

Avoid Over or Under-Packing While you might be tempted to leave space for souvenirs, extra room means items can shift and crumple or break. Fill empty spaces with eco friendly dry cleaner bags (and fill them later with mementos from your trip). It’s important not to over-pack either (especially if you’re only bringing a carry-on), since that’s a surefire way to create crease marks and can make it extra tricky to repack when you're going home — or heading off to another spot.

Pack By Outfit There's nothing more annoying than struggling to stuff everything back into your suitcase at the end of a trip only to realize you didn't even wear half the clothes you brought. That's why it's best to start strictly packing by outfit — not by individual item — and only letting pieces you had a plan for make the cut. JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 66

WHY IS PLASTIC BAD FOR THE PLANET? BY SAMANTHA DIAZ

Over the past few years, there have been hundreds of news articles written about the rise of plastic waste and with it, plastic litter. While there’s no denying that plastic is everywhere nowadays, there is some confusion as to why plastic is so bad for our planet. After all, it’s still mass-produced, and people are still regularly bringing it into their homes. Plastic is everywhere you look in the home — whether it’s the hand soap container and shampoo bottle in the bathroom, the toys in the lounge, or the utensils and food storage boxes in the kitchen. There’s a difference between single-use plastic and plastic products that are created to be reused. However, there are some risks associated with both. This article will show you a look at why plastic is such a problem for the environment. JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 68

Plastic is unsustainable Plastics are made from unsustainable materials including coal, natural gases, and crude oil. This means that the manufacturing process itself is terrible for the planet, and then the resulting plastics are not all recyclable. In addition to this, the recyclable plastic types are not 100 per cent recyclable, so new plastic still needs to be produced to make a new product from the old plastic. This is often referred to as "openloop recycling", where the original plastic degrades in quality when recycled and so is made into other products rather than the same one. This is also known as "down cycling". Furthermore, unfortunately, not all recyclable plastic gets recycled because it isn’t all placed in a recycling bin.

Plastic takes a long time to degrade & leaches toxins While there are a few plastics that can be composted, these are currently very rarely used (probably because they are more expensive to produce). Standard plastics are not compostable — in fact, they can sometimes take about 1,000 years or more to decompose on landfill. When they are left to degrade, there is concern over harmful chemicals leaching out into the environment. Relatedly, some plastics leach toxins into the food or drink they contain, which then make their way into our bodies. Makes you wonder what other chemicals are make their way into our bodies.

Plastic can be tiny (e.g., microplastics) When plastic degrades, it doesn’t disappear but instead breaks down into smaller pieces and tiny particles known as microplastics. Purposely manufactured microplastic beads used to exist in cosmetics and toiletries. The US government banned them in 2015 because they were harming marine life.

Plastic harms wildlife Much like the microplastics that were banned last year, other plastic becomes litter too which then makes it a danger to wildlife. Animals consume plastic, believing it to be food, or get caught up in pieces of it. This often results in injury or death. Sea creatures are particularly at risk, and turtles are known to choke on plastic bags which they mistake for jellyfish.

WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE & WHAT CAUSES IT? BY SAMANTHA DIAZ

However, over the past few decades, the Earth has been heating up — this is climate change, and also called global warming. Climate change has always occurred, but this time it is said to be happening at a much quicker rate than in the past.

What causes climate change? Climate change on Earth can be caused by one or a number of factors. The sun’s output, the Earth’s orbit, changes in the orientation of the Earth’s axis of rotation, levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, carbon dioxide content of the oceans, plate tectonics and volcanic

WHY CAN'T ALL PLASTIC BE RECYCLED? BY SAMANTHA DIAZ

S

ince 1988, it’s been easy to identify what type of plastic many products, packaging and containers are made from, thanks to the creation of the Resin Identification Code, or RIC. This is the number enclosed within a triangle that appears on many plastic items as a guide to its recyclability – but although the symbol originally included the familiar ‘recycling symbol’ of three arrows arranged in a triangular shape, not all plastics marked in this way are actually recyclable.More recently, it is common to see a solid triangle rather than the triangular ‘recycling’ arrows, in an attempt to reduce the risk of non-recyclable plastics being misinterpreted. JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 71

What are the seven types of plastic? There are seven specific RIC codes, including: 1. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) typically including drinks bottles and cups. 2. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) including bottles, cups and milk jugs. 3. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) including rigid plastics like pipes and tubes. 4. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) such as beer sixpack fasteners and plastic bags. 5. Polypropylene (PP) used in food containers and some plastic car parts. 6. Polystyrene (PS) again used to hold food, drinks cups and some plastic utensils. 7. ‘Other’ – A general purpose category for acrylic, nylon and other plastics. As a useful rule of thumb, the lower the number, the more likely it is that a particular plastic product can be recycled, and both RIC codes 1 and 2 are among the most commonly recycled materials.RIC 3 PVC is fairly widely recycled too, but further down the list it becomes less possible to fully recycle plastics – for example in the RIC 4 category, thin single-use plastic bags are better targeted through initiatives like the minimum carrier bag

Why are some plastics not recycled?

charge. It’s not economical or environmentally effective to recycle some forms of plastic, and accepting them all without distinction can make recycling efforts much more difficult for the other types of plastic too.For example, plastic films, plastic wrapping and thin plastic bags run the risk of clogging processing machinery if they are collected along with larger, heavier and more rigid recyclable plastics, which is why it’s important not to put them in plastic recycling bins unless you know they are acceptable. Unfortunately, just because a particular item is marked with a RIC code 1 or 2, it still does not mean that it is automatically guaranteed to be recyclable under any one scheme, and you will usually find guidance from your recycling company will stick to listing more general categories like bottles and trays, rather than specifying a particular RIC type for collections.

JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 72

What are the options for non-recyclable plastic waste? Just because plastic cannot be recycled, it doesn’t mean that it can’t be reprocessed in another way. Other plastics can be reused too, for example solid clean polystyrene might be broken down to produce packing chips, while plastic bottles can easily be rinsed and reused with no processing required.

Can I mix different types of recyclable plastic? If your recycling provider allows it, absolutely – it really depends on who you work with and whether their recycling facility is set up to separate out the different types of plastic. But it’s important not to put the wrong types of plastic into a recycling bin. This not only runs the risk of clogging machinery with flimsy films and plastic bags as mentioned above, but can also contaminate entire loads of recyclable plastic. While methods of separating out recyclable and non-recyclable waste, and cleaning the recyclable material before it is processed, are becoming more and more sophisticated all the time, a contaminated load that cannot be cleaned runs the risk of being sent to landfill in its entirety. This obviously substantially undermines the environmental benefits of recycling, which is why you should never simply assume that your recycling provider can sort it out later, rather than making sure you get it right when disposing of your plastic waste at source.

HOW TO GO ZERO WASTE IN YOUR KITCHEN

BY SAMANTHA DIAZ The kitchen is the true heart of the home and, as such, it produces the most amount of waste. This doesn’t have to be the case though, and with some small changes in how you do things, you can cut waste dramatically and move towards a zero waste kitchen setup over time. There’s a lot to take in with such a large lifestyle change, so take it one step at a time and do only what you are comfortable with. Also, don’t rush out and replace everything in your kitchen with zero waste replacements — that would go against the idea of zero waste, which is to reuse things as long as possible until they are no longer up to the job. Then you might fix it, if you can, rather than buying a replacement! The below is some food for thought for you and your kitchen.

JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 75

03

Set Up A Compost Bin If you don’t already have a compost bin, now is the time to set one up. A compost bin is a must for every kitchen as you can feed it any food waste you produce, which in turn will create a nutrient-rich compost for your garden. You can then use this compost to grow your own fruit, vegetables and salad, or to give your flowers a boost.

Ditch The Paper Tower Roll Kitchen paper is highly wasteful as you use it once and bin it — it can’t be recycled, so it heads straight to landfill. By simply swapping this out for washable cotton cloths, you’ll save so much paper waste. You could make your own by cutting up an old towel, or there are plenty on sale online if you’d like to buy some instead.

Shop ‘Zero Waste’ If you have a ‘zero waste’ or bulk buy shop nearby, lucky you! You can go there to buy loose food, such as oats, nuts, pulses, pasta, rice and spices, which you can then store in reusable containers.Keep jars once you’ve finished a product (such as jam or peanut butter) and you can then reuse them for this purpose. Cloth bags are also a useful thing to own when shopping in this way, as carrying glass jars around can be difficult.

Wash The Dishes Differently

04

Instead of washing up using plastic sponges or a plastic dish brush — all of which aren’t recyclable — invest in a natural dish brush with a compostable, replaceable head, or an ‘unsponge’ made from cloth and a compostable filling. There’s a great range of extras available too, such as natural bottle brushes and scourers.

Move Away From Plastic Wrap

05

Admittedly, cling film is highly useful in the kitchen, but there is a reusable alternative on the market now called a food wrap, which is so much better for the environment. Made from cloth and wax, you wrap your food or crockery and mould the sheet using the heat of your hands. Once your food wrap eventually reaches the end of its life, it’s fully compostable.

HOW TO GO GREEN WITH YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE

JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 77

Read The Ingredients! Who takes the time to look at all the ingredients on a product? Further still, who researches what each obscure ingredient is made from? Maybe only a small amount of us do this. It's very shocking what I discovered in a lot of these beauty products, and also the laws surrounding these chemicals. I was truly horrified in discovering petrochemicals in many beauty products (aka fossil fuels). Not something you’d really choose to spread all over your skin is it? But it’s in many beauty products. Some of them you may recognize. Propylene, mineral oils, phenoxyethanol, and toluene just to name a few. Have you ever seen the words ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ listed as ingredient? Well US law says that companies are under no legal obligation to disclose the ingredient of those scents. So as consumers we just have to accept that there are a lot of manmade synthetic chemicals in products which truly disturbing. Some companies are open to you asking what is in the scent so it is worth contacting them. Other companies are completely transparent and will list the ingredient of that scent on their website. With that being said, it can be difficult to know when a product is completely natural. One way to really be sure of what goes into your beauty products, is to either make your own or find products that are eco-friendly. No worries, you will know which is which.

Say No To Animal Testing! The good news is that there is a ban on animal testing for cosmetic products in the US. No ingredient tested on animals is to be used in beauty products, regardless where the ingredient was made. However, this doesn’t mean that a company can’t test on animals outside of the US and sell their products to countries that allow testing to happen. In particular those companies that sell in China, will have tested on animals as China demands that it be done.Avoid this by checking that the beauty brands you use are cruelty-free and vegan. Do your research, too. PETA have a list of animal-derived products on their website so you know what to steer clear of. JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 78

Say No To Single-Use Plastics! Sadly, plastic gets everywhere. Especially when it comes to cosmetics. The beauty sector generated over 142 billion units of packaging last year – most of which ended up in landfill or the ocean. Because of this, the first green beauty success story occurred in the UK as legislation banned products containing microbeads. Which lead to the US to also ban microbeads in 2015. Microbeads (or microplastics) are plastic particles used in many cleansers, toothpastes and scrubs. But that’s just the start. If you want to take the plastic out of your beauty items, there are a few things you can do. Firstly, seek out refill and zerowaste shops. They won’t sell items in single-use packaging, instead you have to bring your own container. Take a glass bottle and fill up on as much shampoo and conditioner as you need there. Chances are, these kinds of shops will also sell shampoo bars, too. These products require little, to no-packaging so they’re a great green beauty item to buy into. Also research brands with great sustainable ethos. JUST BEGIN MAGAZINE | 79

HOW TO IMPROVE & INCREASE YOUR RECYCLING

REFUSE

RECYCLE

THE 5 R'S: REFUSE, REDUCE, REUSE, REPURPOSE, RECYCLE The 5 R's, four actions should be taken, if possible, prior to "recycling" refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and then recycle. Applying the 5 R's to your life can positively impact the outcome of your waste consumption by significantly reducing the amount of waste you generate.

Please remember to treat recycling as a last resort after attempting to refuse, reduce, reuse, or repurpose.

FIND OUT WHAT YOU CAN AND CAN’T RECYCLE This may seem obvious, but actually it has been revealed that a lot ofAmericans have no idea what they should and shouldn’t be putting in their recycling bins! If you would like to learn more about what should or shouldn't be recycled please check out our previous article "Why Can't All Plastics Be Recycled". Other than that, take the time to read up on what can and can’t be recycled in your area or by your waste management company, and stick to it — nonrecyclables mixed in with recycling can spoil whole batches of recycling, which is bad news for the planet and ruins the efforts of others.

DONATE UNWANTED ITEMS Instead of tossing unwanted items or things you no longer need, where they’ll end up in landfill, offer them to friends and family, donate them to a charity shop, or list them on a website such as Amazon, eBay or Freecycle. One person’s junk is another’s treasure!

GET YOUR WHOLE HOUSEHOLD RECYCLING It’s not just kids that need some encouragement when it comes to recycling waste! Get your entire household thinking about it. Ensure you have a dedicated space for recycling, giving everyone no excuse not to recycle. The easier you make it, the more likely people are to do it.

Since 2012, the Workers’ Compensation Institute has supported Give Kids The World by bringing hundreds of volunteers to work in Village venues and assist with Village service projects. WCI also hosts an annual Give Kids The World Gala which includes a sit-down dinner, silent auction, and entertainment.

That silent auction is coordinate and organized by Robin herself. Last year, Robin and her committee raised over $50,000 to donate to the organization. LEADERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE Written by Donna Check Claire transformed the “Workers’ Compensation Claims Department” at Continental Western Insurance Companies into the “Workers’ Recovery Unit” placing focus on the injured worker as a person who wants to be productive again. This program is a direct result of Claire’s 15-plus years of direct claims experience and her obvious passion for providing a better customer experience for all injured workers. Claire and her team focus on communication and understanding the psychosocial elements that might not be communicated to workers at the very beginning of the claim process. Along with Claire’s daily responsibilities, she speaks nationally on the topic of humanity in claims.

D: What made you convert the Workers’ Compensation Claims Department into the “Workers’ Recovery Unit” at Continental Western Insurance Companies? Life experiences make a difference about what you see. I got to experience the workers’ compensation system right out of college. I watched my father and understood why he didn’t want to go along with the system. It seemed very broken to me. What I saw… it’s not the way people should be treated. I was adopted and have a hard time attaching to people. So when I had my hip injury, I felt alone and icky. Four weeks into my recovery I collapsed in PT which was extremely difficult for me as I was in shape and very athletic. So feeling broken and alone, I am here to make things happen for people so they don’t feel like they are broken and alone. Putting all this together, it is clear we don’t do well on the claims side. I decided I was going to build a department that fosters the mentality TO DO. CWIG is forward thinking. New processes. Innovative. Starting with a different mindset. Positive. Living the dream… 99% of the world is worse than we are. Happiness is a conscious decision every day, so I knew we could build something awesome. I knew where my vision and mission were headed. The President was on board and it was a fun experience. Building a unit has to have different people. Nurturing is needed, nurses, we need to foster and cultivate the mission. So I know it’s working well. Today, an adjuster an email from an injured worker sharing that he and his family have “had the best experience ever. We want to meet you.” Amazing! Because we don’t break down the process for everyone, the system is difficult. Going back to what we learn in kindergarten. Play together in the sandbox. Inviting others in. Being kind. We can do things differently. So we send birthday cards to the injured workers! We introduce ourselves, and we have conversations with them. Get their perspective.

touches is where we need to be. Workers’ Compensation started in the industrial age. We’ve come a long way but that the rules are rigid and not much has changed. Very tough.

D: How was the concept received by everyone involved at CWIC? We all want to see results. Some see me as a cheerleader. One we could showcase is when an adjuster got flowers from an injured worker! The card read, “Thank you for treating me like a person.” We get pictures, Christmas cards, general cards with their families from our injured workers. When you really start to care about them, there is not as much animosity. They get better. They actually go back to work. Authentic, Real, and Vulnerable.

D: How do you see your leadership - with your teams and supporters - impacting lives? Game changing the industry and showing it can be done relatively quickly and easily and it all starts with one person… you.

D: What makes you happy, balanced, and fulfilled? My daughter. Realizing what kind of life I want to leave her with. How she grows and develops is a direct result of what I do and show her. For her last birthday, we did a motherdaughter trip to Chicago. On the last day, I asked her what she wanted to do. She wanted to walk on Michigan Avenue to talk to homeless people. She had entire conversations with them...asked about them, their families, how they got where they are now. She cared and understood we all want to be seen, acknowledged and heard. This should be no different in the workers’ compensation space. Making sure we have human connection. Changing the trajectory. Giving to a human being .. saying I see you and hear you.
