e m o c l e W to the

competition!

Dear Parents, Dancers, and Friends, We are excited to invite you to the 27th year we have offered Together We Dance Competitions and the 40th year of Just For Kix. TOGETHER WE DANCE COMPETITIONS were created to provide our participants with a venue to perform in front of a huge crowd. Many of our dancers from small towns never get to hear the ROAR of the crowd. It is so fun to watch them in these exciting moments. Remember, it is important to cheer for all the teams when watching. Everyone is someone’s child. Celebrate the successes of all children. We invite you also to do more with Just For Kix. We have camps and intensives in the summer and the Annual Outback Bowl Tour to Florida in the winter! Even if your director does not go, YOU can go as a family. Check out these events online. We thank you for your involvement today. We know you had to travel, make sacrifices in your regular life to be here with us. We hope that you enjoy the journey here. It is not just about the 3 minutes on the floor, but the road trip, the hotel stays, the friends made, and the memories shared. As GRANDPARENTS, we have the vantage point of looking back and thinking where did the days go, when we were sitting in the stands watching my kids. It goes faster than you think!!! Life is made up of moments, make sure to enjoy the journey. Thanks for participating. THANKS TO OUR EVENT STAFF Our staff is the greatest. These weekend gigs are TIRING and our staff also work during the week. We always say we are going to take time off, but there is too much to do. We all jokingly say we have TWD hangovers on Monday. They are a real thing, LOL. If you see one of our STAFF please give them a WHOOP WHOOP and thank them for their great service. It is hard to get trusted people to work weekends. We appreciate them so much. THANKS TO OUR TALENTED DIRECTORS AND ASSISTANTS Coaching youth can be challenging. Many times they are bombarded with criticism and only hear the negative. Remember to be a positive force as a parent. Our kids model what they hear. Say thanks to your director for spending these days with your children.

With Kix,

Cindy & Steve Clough

Understanding Dance Competitions:

Parent’s Perspective

INITIAL RESULTS Following each competition, parents who are not familiar with dance often wonder about the results and the criteria judges follow. Involvement in a judged sport can be frustrating and more often than not, results are questioned from the beginner level, all the way to the collegiate level.

POINTS TO CONSIDER • WE TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN OUR EVENTS. Our goal is for each competition to be as fairly judged as possible. We go to great lengths to train our judges with our criteria and select knowledgeable, reputable dancers in the industry to be a part of our judging panel. • MISTAKES CAN HAPPEN. For this very reason, we have multiple judges to evaluate each entry/number as a whole. One judge may see the mistake, while another might not. • WHY DO JUDGES HAVE VARIED RESULTS? While we do train our judges to score/judge aligned with our score sheets, each judge has their own personal preference. One judge may be stricter about pointed toes and straight legs, while the other might be stricter on emotion and facial expressions. As we all have our own preferences, judges can vary while sticking to the parameters of our Just For Kix scoring sheet. • AS A PARENT, YOU MAY BE MORE INCLINED TO WATCH ONLY YOUR CHILD RATHER THAN THE ENTIRE GROUP. Our judges are instructed to judge the complete picture, instead of one or two dancers. We believe our Just For Kix score sheet embodies all aspects of fairly judging a routine; including technique, execution/timing, difficulty, and overall effect.

• JUDGES LOOK FOR TECHNIQUE IN ALL STYLES (KICK, JAZZ, POM, LYRICAL, HIP HOP, BALLET). Even though each style of dance varies, technique is one constant judges are looking for. However, the measure of technique slightly differs from one style to the next. For example, in the kick category, judges look for pointed toes, straight knees, timing, straightness of backs, kick height and execution; while in the hip hop category judges look for the use of resistance, isolations, quality of movement, and execution. • MOST OFTEN, RESULTS ARE VERY CLOSE This circumstance is a recurring theme across most dance competitions; beginner to collegiate level. At the 2022 college dance team nationals, first place scored 96.7971, while second place scored 96.1304. When scores are this close, it comes down to the smallest details. • COSTUMING AND MAKEUP ARE NOT CRITIQUED. Costumes and makeup are not a part of the score sheet, but showmanship, neatness and sameness does count. • CHOREOGRAPHY IS NOT PART OF THE SCORE SHEET. Due to the fact that all routines performed are provided by Just For Kix, we judge based on difficulty, execution, timing and showmanship.

10to become ways a better dancer 1

TRULY BELIEVE YOU CAN DO IT! Those who say they can, can. Those who say they can’t, can’t. There is a difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. You always have the ability to improve. Allow yourself to do so!

2

TEST YOURSELF REGULARLY Perform in front of an audience, compete with other dancers in the Solo/Duet Competitions, choreograph a dance, teach a class, film a dance video. Putting yourself in these situations will help you to grow more confident as a dancer!

3

OVERCOME EXCUSES Positive reinforcement works wonders for dancers. It’s tough to move up if you can’t gain momentum in your practice. Try not to create excuses of why you can’t, and remind yourself why you CAN! If you tell yourself you can do it, you will!

4

TAKE ACHES AND PAINS SERIOUSLY Ignoring your injuries will only lead to failure of excellence. It’s never too late to start treating your body right and listening to it when it needs rest.

5

KEEP A DANCE NOTEBOOK Keeping a dance notebook allows for you to remember tips and good memories. Each time you go to a convention or finish at practice, write down things you’ve learned.

6

FOCUS ON ONE THING AT A TIME Most dancers tend to overwhelm themselves by trying to perfect multiple skills at a time. For your best results, try focusing on one thing. This gives you the opportunity to learn and apply corrections to other skills in the future.

7

COMMIT You’re going to be doing this a long time. Keep going, even when it gets really tough, because it will. Committing to your dreams will only lead to success. Put the hard work in now so you can shine this season!

8

HAVE A GREAT SUPPORT SYSTEM Surround yourself with good friends and family members who support you and your dreams. Get rid of those who bring you down and ignore those who distract you from achieving your dreams. Work hard to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself.

9

STRETCH DAILY Taking time to stretch even on days you don’t have dance class can help to improve not only your flexibility, but also your strength. Stretching will increase your range of motion and allow for less muscle injury.

10

ATTEND DANCE CAMP Just For Kix offers camps for all ages. For ages 3-5 years: Preschool Camp, ages K-9th grade: Youth Camp, ages 12yrsCollege Teams: Intensive Camp, 7th-12th grade: High School Camp. You’ll become stronger at camp, in body and spirit.

POINT DISTRIBUTION EXPLANATION We have added a scale of Silver through Double Platinum rankings in addition to placement rankings to recognize our dancers, their efforts and points earned. Because of this, we are now able to acknowledge each team’s level of excellence regardless of final placement rankings at each award ceremony. Double Platinum (Superior) | 250-300 Platinum (Excellent) | 200-249 High Gold (Average) | 150-199 Gold (Good) | 100-149 Silver (Fair) | 0-99

2021 Director of the Year

Each year when we look at people that are eligible for the Veteran Director of the year, we look at their whole career as a Director. What kind of impact they have had on their communities, their tenacity in controversy, their positive outlook and constant support of JFK. The example they set for others and spirit in which they help fellow Directors. There are many that stand out to us and it is always hard to limit it.

Molly Reinhart St. Peter, MN & New Ulm, MN

2021 Developing Director of the Year

This award is given to Directors that stand out to us in a variety of areas - they have strong thriving programs, are organized, receive strong evaluations and are involved in multiple areas of the company. They are excelling as a Director and creating a wonderful example for others. It is always so hard to narrow it down to just a few.

6 Steps

to Teaching

Sportsmanship

At Just For Kix, every dancer is encouraged to have outstanding sportsmanship. Learning to practice good sportsmanship takes time, much like preparing for a dance sharpens the dancer’s skill. The best teachers of this lesson are the generations that come before them. We ask that YOU help us set an incredible standard of good sportsmanship to show our dancers that they create a habit of it towards their friends and competitors. Clap for all teams. Support judges decisions.

1. ENCOURAGE TEAMMATES AND OPPONENTS For many children, encouraging dancers who aren’t on their team can be difficult. Young athletes tend to think they can only support their team, but this is wrong. Supporting the other team shows gratitude and maturity. Although it may not be the easiest thing to do, it is one of the most important.

2. RESPECT YOURSELF, YOUR TEAM AND YOUR COACHES Showing respect for yourself, your team and your coaches will allow your team to become more unified. As parents, we should teach our children to value the concept of teamwork and leadership brought to us through our program director.

3. WALK THE TALK Children are always watching and imitating parents. With this being said, ensure your words are matching your actions. Children are going to look to you when good and bad times arise. Show them how to react to both situations.

4. POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT Positive reinforcement goes a long way. Even if your team made a mistake, it is best not to stress over it. Parents should model this behavior for children by acknowledging and praising them for certain things they have done well, even if they didn’t perform as well as they had hoped.

5. BE GRACIOUS DURING AWARDS Take pride in a win and a loss. If your competitor wins, accept defeat, realize their strengths and strive to improve for next time. If your team wins, resist flaunting and bragging to other teams. Be humble in a win and accepting of a loss.

6. HAVE FUN Having fun is the best way to promote sportsmanship! A sense of sportsmanship stems from the attitude of the parents and the coach. A team sport should be 80 percent good sportsmanship and 20 percent fun - a team with good sportsmanship

is bound to have a blast!

What do our judges look for? Technique: In this category judges will evaluate the technique in the moves and skills of the routine. This involves proper positioning, placement and alignment. Execution: This category is where dancers be scored on how they are doing what they are doing. This includes timing of routine, memory, flow and extension. Choreography & Content: In this category dancers are scored on the routine they are performing. This includes use of floor, difficulty, variety of movement and effectiveness. Showmanship: This category focuses on the performance of the dancer. Are they connecting with the audience? Are they using facial expression consistently and does it fit the routine? They are also scored on energy level & confidence.

Q&A

Q: My dancer’s cousin is not a Just For Kix dancer; can she be part of the duet?

A: No, the competition is open to Just For Kix dancers only. Q: Can we use choreography from a Just For Kix dance? A: You cannot use an entire routine, but as with most individual choreography, it is acceptable to find inspiration from another routine. Q: Can my dancer wear their Just For Kix class costume? A: Absolutely. Costuming is a small portion of the judging, and if it matches the style of the routine that is just fine. Q: We originally registered as a duet, and now decided to compete as a small group, can we change our division? A: Please call the Home Office to check on the possibility of any changes, 218-829-7107 M-F 8:00am-4:30pm. Q: Can we hire an outside choreographer? A: Yes. The Director can help find an approved choreographer for their program.
