From ancient ruins and vine-covered hills to wild horses and enchanting UNESCO World Heritage Sites, many of the scenes we encounter on this all-inclusive cruise along the Rhône and Saône are beautifully unique. The labyrinthine alleys in Lyon are a delight to explore and the sights of rural Burgundy promise to enchant, while picturesque Provence is the perfect place to soak up the French joie de vivre.
ITINERARY
Day 1 Ferry to Calais, France & overnight hotel stay
Ferry to Calais and onwards to our hotel, where we stay overnight on a bed and breakfast basis.
Day 2 Embarkation in Lyon, France
We continue our journey south, arriving in Lyon where we board the A-ROSA STELLA for the start of our cruise.
Day 3 Chalon-sur-Saône
Our first port of call is the picturesque city of Chalon-sur-Saône, situated on the banks of the River Saône. We have the opportunity to explore the area by bicycle or visit the city, with its many beautiful timber-framed houses and the striking Cathédrale St Vincent.
Day 4 Mâcon & Trévoux
We arrive in Mâcon. Surrounded by vineyards and châteaux, the city has an almost Mediterranean character thanks to its buildings with coloured facades and roofs covered with Romanesque tiles. We make a short stop in Trévoux, a lovely town filled with heritage buildings including a 14th-century feudal castle, complete with an octagonal keep.
Day 5 Lyon
Dating back 2,000 years, Lyon is one of France’s oldest cities. Its old town – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site – offers a maze of narrow streets, and historic buildings. Another highlight is the Notre Dame de Fourvière, a 19th-century basilica built in shimmering white stone. Lyon is also reputed as the gourmet capital of France!
Day 6 Avignon
Avignon is one of the most popular ports of call on A-ROSA’s Rhône cruises. This historic city was once the seat of the Catholic Popes in the Middle Ages – be sure to visit the unique Palais des Papes in Avignon’s ancient quarter. There are also beautifully-preserved ramparts, mansion-lined streets and the famous Pont d’Avignon to explore.
Day 7 Arles
The Provençal city of Arles, with its sun-drenched terracotta-tiled rooftops, occupies a broad bend in the River Rhône. Known as the city of art and history, Arles is famous for its ancient and Romanesque remains, including the exceptional Roman amphitheatre, with many monuments classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Day 8 La Voulte-sur-Rhône
As we cruise back towards Lyon, we make a short stop in La Voulte-sur-Rhône, characterised by the 14th-century castle in the old town, set against a backdrop of rolling hills.
Day 9 Disembarkation in Lyon & overnight hotel stay
We arrive back in Lyon where we disembark and head to our overnight hotel where a light evening meal is included.
Day 10 Ferry home
We check out of the hotel and head to Calais for our return ferry home. YOUR BREAK INCLUDES
